Joyce M. Hunter is a founding member and currently the president and CEO of the African American Cultural & Historical Museum of Washtenaw County.
The idea to start an African American museum in Washtenaw County was suggested at an Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Founders’ Day celebration by Dr. Margaret Burroughs, co-founder of the DuSable Museum in Chicago. The challenge was accepted, and as a founding member, Joyce
organized the very fi rst meeting and later served as the fi rst board chair.
Without any museum experience, space, or money, the founding members moved forward by creating a “museum without walls” and collaborating with local organizations.
The museum’s mission is to tell the stories that are not being told by any other organizations about African Americans in Washtenaw County. The AACHM is able to do this at its new permanent home on Lohr Road, which was owned by David and Letitia Byrd and is now a historic site.

ZINGERMAN’S COMMUNITY OF BUSINESSES
ZINGERMANSCOMMUNITY.COM
Zingerman’s has been an integral part of the fabric of Ann Arbor since Zingerman’s Delicatessen opened in 1982. Today, the Zingerman’s Community of Businesses (ZCoB) is made up of nearly a dozen individually owned and operated locations — including artisan food producers, restaurants, caterers, event spaces, organizational training, food tours, and more.
A majority of Zingerman’s businesses are owned or co-owned by women (the
majority of ZCoB managers are women, too!), eight of which are represented here by their female owners/co-owners (from left): Toni Morell, Amy Emberling, Grace Singleton, Ji Hye Kim, Kristie Brablec, Katie Frank, Lisa Schultz, and Tabitha Mason. Zingerman’s fosters growth opportunities (many of the leaders across the ZCoB started their careers in the organization as bakers, servers, cooks, and more) and is focused on building long-lasting relationships with the community (including striving to give back 10% of profits in Washtenaw County annually).
In Ann Arbor, Andrea Jones has made her Nothing Bundt Cakes location a beloved destination, combining her passion for baking with a strong commitment to community service. Her bakeries in Sterling Heights, Ann Arbor, Grosse Pointe, and soon Allen Park provide everything from bite-size bundtinis to tiered cakes for special occasions, always with a focus on quality and care.
