Keep It Simple
after
W
elcome to our June edition. School is out and time for vacations- except if you’re a landscaper. As the farmers used to say, you got to make hay while the sun is shining, so such is the case for businesses that rely on good weather to work. Though we work year-round this is our busier season, March to November. And since we are talking about weather, remember that summer is a good time to landscape. A plant is going to live in a hot plastic can in the nursery, or it can live in the cooler ground with bark as insulation. Remember the leaves have a waxy covering (some more and some less) but have their means to handle the heat. It is the roots you want to protect, which the plastic cannot do. The earth, soil with bark over the top, is the best place for the plant to be. Now for our topic. Normally I adopt my clients as my uncle and aunt, but in this case with my clients being younger, they adopted me and now I have more family in town (yeah!) This was a front and backyard landscape project completed in December and January and for this month I want to start with the front yard. In the following months we will discuss the back. The title “Keep It Simple” comes from the concept of where less is more. As you can see, the landscape 8 www.House2HomeShowcase.com – Sacramento
before basically consists of a very big oak tree, a dry stream bed, boulders and plants. There are really only a few “moving parts,” no walls, flagstone patios etc., however it is how it is done that gives this small space (compared to the backyard) such a neat feeling. Rob and Regina’s (the owners) front yard was similar to the backyard of my “uncle and aunt,” Bob and Suzie,whose yard we featured in March with their huge redwood trees. Unlike the redwoods, that if you do not look up you only see the trunks, here the canopy of the oak is unavoidable. There definitely is no ignoring it. Therefore, the oak was going to take “center stage,” whether I wanted it to or not. What could be done to keep it the masterpiece that it is, but at the same time bring beauty and substance to the rest of the
yard so that it would not be dominated by the oak’s presence? We had two things in our favor. The oak leaves, as with all oaks, are monochrome in color with a stiff texture and in that lied my answer. By introducing plants of varying colors and textures I would be adding to the beauty of the oak, using it as a backdrop; much like the night sky with the stars. Neither one competes with the other, rather they enhance each other’s natural beauty. Also, it is very similar to how you ladies dress. You have your main outfit but then accessorize, accessorize and accessorize to bring out the best of all the items worn. There is no competition, only enhancement. Such was my approach to the front yard. From the dry stream bed and its unique shape, to the lighter colored boulders, to the choices of textures and colors within the plant selections etc., these were my “accessories.” And don’t forget height. Though there is no competing with the oak’s height, adding small trees on the perimeter (staggered height approach) helps anchor the oak and make it not as overwhelming. Currently the trees are small and will need to grow to get to the vision I have, however by using the lighter, airier, colorful leaves of the Japanese Maple the contrast becomes a complement. In deciding on the boulders we had three choices. There are moss rock boulders, which are common in nature with oaks, as well as granite boulders and Sierra boulders. The Sierra boulder is a quartz boulder that may be common with oaks but I have not seen it in this geographical location with oaks. My determining factor in selecting the right boulder was how it reflected the light. I needed to take advantage of what light filtered down through the canopy. Things that are darker in color absorb the light, so the moss rock boulders with their dark moss and lichen would not work. So they were out. Yet the granite boulders were too bright, too stark and they are not a “warm” boulder. However, the Sierra boulders with their quartz base and varying earth tones, along with the blues, grays and cream colors did exactly what I needed them to do - reflect the light. Also, they added more diversity to the color scheme and with the dry stream bed they were a necessary addition and enhancement furthering our end goal.

Creation is fascinating in its way of design and multiple combinations. There were many plant selections and dry stream bed designs I could have done, but by keeping the stream bed simple and in front of the oak and the plants around the oak in their varying colors and textures it accomplishes the goal and it makes one feel that they are viewing a beautiful slice of nature. Definitely good for our souls. Gardeners – a quick word. By now you are harvesting some of the labor of your hands; however, you have help in the form of aphids, caterpillars, loppers etc. Remember we only have three means to deal with these guys. One is to keep the vegetables healthy by being regular with your organic fertilizer. Also by keeping the vegetable leaves rinsed (morning hours only) of dust you discourage spider mite, and lastly to control loppers, caterpillars etc., use Bt for spraying. Stay away from oils in the summer months. Good Gardening - Arthur

Whenever you entertain at home, no matter how good your family or living room looks, do your guests always end up in your kitchen? For many households the kitchen is the gathering place of the home. It’s where great meals are cooked, kids’ homework is completed and all the problems of the world are solved. Right? And when it comes to remodeling, the kitchen is often the first room homeowners want to address. Remodeling and real estate experts often espouse kitchen updates as the perfect way to add tremendous value to your home. Interior Designer Robin Wilson and author of Clean Design: Wellness for Your Lifestyle, offers several dos and don’ts for kitchen remodels.
DON’T think about how a prospective buyer will like your new kitchen. DO consider all your likes and dislikes before bringing in the sledgehammer. Figure out what’s
important to you and your taste. Peruse design magazines to get a sense of what appeals to you.
DO design your kitchen with your cooking style in mind. If you cook frequently and always have a full house, don’t purchase countertops that scratch or stain easily. And if you don’t consider yourself a chef, don’t waste your money on an expensive six-burner stove!

No matter what changes in the kitchen they make, Costa said her clients are interested in making their kitchens more streamlined and clean looking, with simple touches throughout.

For a kitchen remodel Costa suggests a timeless design in shades of taupe and gray, leaving pops of color to furniture pieces, art, pillows and even bowls. The best part about either donating your furniture, housewares or clothing to the ReNew stores or making a purchase is that 100 percent of the profits go to Acres of Hope, which is a renewal center for homeless women with children. Families may stay at Acres of Hope for up to two years as they work through various phases of the program. The center is located in Auburn and accepts residents on a referral basis only. “We are not a shelter,” said Marcelle Schaefer, Acres of Hope executive director. “We teach a life skills curriculum that includes cooking, nutrition and budgeting. We also focus on teaching skills everyone needs to have to be a good employee and on a personal level, how to set boundaries in a relationship.” Schaefer said each family receives their own studio apartment living space and the women, who pay what they can afford depending on if they have any income, take turns in the community house with responsibilities for shopping, menu planning and cooking for all residents. “We teach our families how to be self-sufficient and how to avoid being a victim,” Schaefer said. “We focus on how to get past their wounds and to learn to trust again.” Acres of Hope is donorbased as well as dependent on the proceeds of the ReNew stores and regular fundraisers as well.

It’s called upcycling, the process of converting old or discarded materials into something useful and often beautiful. It’s exactly what the volunteers at Renew Home/Urban ReNew in Roseville do every day. Since 2011 the store has been part of the ReNew Stores, which includes not only Renew Home/Urban ReNew where gently used and upcycled furniture, décor and housewares are sold, but also ReNew Thrift Boutique where new and used clothing, shoes and accessories for women and teens are available.
“We are so lucky to have such talented craftspeople who can visualize exactly what to do to give a household item new life,” said Jamie Yates, general manager for the store. “We receive donated items every day and our volunteers make these pieces into one-of-a-kind treasures.” Whether you have large pieces of furniture you no longer need or use and wish to donate or you are looking for some upcycled items to buy, the ReNew stores are the perfect resource. Yates said the two stores, which are located adjacent to each other, receive assistance from professional designers and talented hobbyists. a Contractor is Untrustworthy If you are getting ready to do any remodeling in your home in the near future, there are several things you should know to protect your family and your home. It’s important to always know the qualifications of anyone who is coming into your home. The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) offers homeowners these top 10 warning signs that a home improvement contractor may not be reputable:
1. You can’t verify the name, address, telephone number or credentials of the remodeler. 2. The salesperson tries to pressure you into signing a contract. 3. The salesperson tells you a special price is available only if you sign the contract “today.” 4. No references are furnished. 5. Information you receive from the contractor is out-of-date or no longer valid. 6. You are unable to verify the license or insurance information. 7. You are asked to pay for the entire job in advance, or to pay in cash to a salesperson instead of by check
or money order to the company itself.
8. The company cannot be found in the telephone book, is not listed with the local Better Business Bureau,
or with a local trade association, such as NARI.
9. The contractor does not offer, inform or extend notice of your right to cancel the contract within three days.
Law requires notification in writing of your “Right of Rescission.” This grace period allows you to change your mind and declare the contract null and void without penalty (if the agreement was solicited at some place other than the contractor’s place of business or appropriate trade premises-in your home, for instance.)
10. You are given vague or reluctant answers or your questions are not answered to your satisfaction. In addition, avoid contractors who exhibit poor communication skills, are impatient and do not listen to you, or situations in which the contractor is not accessible. Your needs as the homeowner should be addressed, not just the work at hand. Your contractor should also present examples of previous projects if asked, along with references.
