Marvel at the Northern Lights from your glass igloo
Scientists are predicting 2025 will bring the best Northern Lights display in 20 years! Located in Finland’s Lapland region, we all know who the most famous resident here is, and we’d put money on Santa spending most of his downtime at an igloo resort! These snow-tucked hotels boast multiple glass igloos and will be the perfect place to witness the aurora borealis. Accommodating between two and four guests, a domed thermal glass design and zero Wi-Fi, these igloos allow you to take a cosy digital detox beneath a fluttering of snow and the best starlit sky in Europe. Marbling the sky from August through to late April, for a once-in-a-lifetime auroras experience, book an igloo stay. Finland not your kind of aurora? Check out where else in the world you can view this incredible spectacle on page 18

Food, glorious food … in Vietnam
Vietnam is a spellbinding mix of culture, colour and cuisine and it is one of the fastest growing Asian destinations for Kiwi travellers at the moment. So why is Vietnam so hot right now? It’s not just how far your dollar goes on the ground ̀̂ – you don’t need a lot of dong to dine like a deity in Vietnam, you can pick up a steaming hot bowl of delicious pho streetside from our favourite restaurant in Hanoi’s French Quarter and still get change from $5! You’ll love the glow and bustle exploring historic Hoi An’s Bach Dang Street night markets illuminated by lanterns and candles and a cacophony of sights, smells and

Hibernate in a cave in Puglia
If you’re looking for an experience that is as unique as it is authentic, then staying in the ancient cave dwellings carved into the limestone cliffs in Italy’s magical city of Matera is for you! Not the type of cave you might find Bear Grylls bunkering down for the night, but a plush cave hotel in one of Europe’s most unusual landscapes. The Italian city of Matera is renowned for its ancient cave dwellings. These intriguing stone residences are cut into rock faces within a labyrinth of narrow streets and tumbling lodgings chipped into the cliffside. A UNESCO World Heritage site, between the stone churches and ancient alleyways, the caves have been carefully restored in full respect of the local cultural heritage. Fear not, with king size beds and ensuite bathrooms, these hotel caves offer every comfort!
Buckle up for a Southern USA Musical Roadie!
5
When you think of the all-American road trip, ‘getting your kicks on Route 66’, instantly springs to mind. But set off on an adventure of the toetapping kind, enjoy a musical pilgrimage to the heart of jazz, blues and rock ‘n’ roll. Your epic road trip starts in New Orleans, where even the street performers possess more talent than your average mainstream musician. But then, this is the Deep South and you’re in the realm of the legendary greats. Explore the birthplace of jazz, then head to Memphis and visit Graceland, Elvis Presley’s former home and Sun Studio, where he recorded his first record. For modern vibes, Beale Street remains the premiere hangout for musical prodigies. And in Nashville you’ll find plenty of country music for a last hurrah, before heading home.

Wine, wilderness and an unforgettable African safari
South Africa is home to all the bona-fide cool stuff. Formidable landscapes, fascinating history and of course incredible wildlife. Elephants, leopards, lions, you name it, South Africa claims it. Zebra! Yes, plenty of zebra. Giraffe! Oh yes, lots of them. And then another trillion forms of animal life to marvel at. Showcasing everything from The Big Five, to The Little Five, birds, bushveld and enough critters to make you go cuckoo (and yes they have them too). There is nothing more spectacular than experiencing a private game reserve and spectacular Table Mountain at its helm, Cape Town is one of the world’s most visually impressive cities. Along with its beauty, it also offers incredible wining and dining experiences – check out the V&A Waterfront! Explore up the coast and you’ll be treated to an abundance of vineyards, we highly recommend stopping at Nederburg Wines for a tasting – their merlot is divine. South Africa takes first prize for WOW!
Alpine & aprés ski ... in Japan!
With Japan’s ski-resorts getting more than twice the snow dumping that world-famous Utah and Colorado get in a year, it’s no surprise Japan is the flavour of the year for skiers! From small local ski fields to sprawling international resorts, Japan is famous for its quality dry snow and has terrain for everyone. Experience an exciting culture, great food and amazing skiing all at once. Niseko Village in the Hokkaido region, celebrated for its pristine, powder-covered slope is the place to go! It’s an exciting and vibrant place with three separate ski areas all linked together. This luxury ski resort is located next to a towering active volcano! After a day of skiing or boarding unwind in an onsen pool and enjoy aprés-ski in style. Sinking into an onsen (a Japanese style hot pool) at the end of a hard day on the mountain to ease the muscles then heading out for an authentic Japanese meal and maybe even a spot of Karaoke is unbeatable! Dinner at Dragons Den, an amazing little bar and restaurant overlooking the piste, provides the perfect place to enjoy a well earnt Sapporo and look up at the fresh tracks you’ve just carved into the mountain. For a fully immersive experience fly to Sapporo on the island of Hokkaido – if you go in February take part in the Snow Festival known for its amazing ice sculpture competition.

Opened in November 2024, Centara Mirage Lagoon Maldives is the newest family resort where children get the special treatment. Eat tapas like a local in Spain
Eating tapas in Spain is a social ritual and a ‘complete tapas experience’ involves hopping from bar to bar and enjoying a couple at each bar! We recommend booking a tapas tour to help get your bearings, a local guide will take you to a few of their favourite bars and show you how it’s done – then you’ll be set. A few tips... keep your eye out for happy hours, each bar has a speciality dish so don’t order everything in the first bar and the best tapas bars are always crowded so pop into any lively looking place. Salud!

Bali’s best day out!
Creative cocktails, glittering infinity pools and superstar DJs spinning by the beach - a Bali beach club needs to be on everybody’s Bali bucket list. Our favourite is Finns Beach Club. This toes-in-the sand venue in Canggu’s Berawa Beach has long held the hearts of sun-worshippers, partygoers and luxury lovers alike. Famous for its front-row seaside location, its oh-so scrummy gourmet bites and cocktails, and don’t even get us started on the fabulous parties beneath the stars. It’s oh-so easy to spend an entire, blissful day here – lounging on your own sun bed, swimming to the pool bar for a Mojito or two, and by nighttime, getting stuck into a floodlit surfing session right out front while the vibes ramp up inside. Be a VIP for the day and hang out in your own pool area if you’re keen for a more exclusive experience! It’s one of the most comprehensive (and utterly breathtaking) beach clubs around… all you need to do is turn up, tune out and lounge on, just don’t forget your swimsuit!

Canal boating along the Canal du Midi
No prior boating experience necessary, just bring your sense of adventure! A great way to share quality family (and extended family) time as you slowly meander (between 12-16 km an hour) along the canals, navigating locks, stopping to explore quaint villages, castles and châteaux - you might even find a Michelin star restaurant a short stroll from dock! Toulouse is often referred to as ‘Paris in miniature,’ a maze-like city and a great place to start your canal boating adventure. Overflowing with art galleries and excellent food, make sure you shop for a picnic of local produce at Marche Victor Hugo or grab a cassoulet lunch in an eatery above the covered market before you set off. The 9 locks of Fonseranes (also known as the Octuple) in Beziers is a Canal du Midi must do and a great way to end your canal boating journey!

spellbound by 20 Be Iguazú Falls Higher than Niagara Falls and four times as wide, the Iguazú Falls are one of the world’s most awe-inspiring natural sights – you will be spellbound by its vast scale, thunderous sound, and soaking spray. Nestled between two national parks and the countries of Brazil and Argentina, this horseshoe shaped chain of hundreds of cascading waterfalls pounding from heights of 82 metres it really is an impressive sight. We recommend viewing from the Argentina side, as it’s arguably more impressive than Brazil, but it’s The Devil’s Throat which really dumbfounds. If you’re a movie buff, you’ll recognise these impressive falls featured in various Hollywood blockbusters – The Mission, Miami Vice and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. There is plenty more to do beside the Falls in Iguazú, we recommend at least two full days to fully explore. Inspired to visit Argentina? Check out our favourite itinerary on page 38

Luxury glamping in British Columbia
Hidden so deeply in nature you’ll need a boat or a seaplane to reach it, Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge offers spectacular glamping in beautiful British Columbia. This is not your ordinary ‘camping’! Nestled between mountain and river, many of the lodge’s safari-style tents nudge the waterfront, furnished with antiques and all the glamour of the city, minus the urban chatter. You can do whatever you choose at your very own pace. Whether that’s a fishing adventure, a wilderness hike, bear watching or white-water rafting amidst pristine views or just the sounds of wildlife. Come nightfall, venture to the dining lodge for meals doused in gastronomic flare, before jumping in the jacuzzi with a night cap. This is luxury glamping at its best!

Dreaming of a white Christmas ... in Santa’s Lapland
Reindeers, huskies, tobogganing, lots of snowy activities – ice fishing, snow hockey and riding mini skidoos, elves around every corner, spectacular shows and a sleigh ride venturing deep into the forest to visit Santa’s secret hideaway for an unforgettable private visit at his workshop. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas …this is Christmas in Santa’s homeland, Lapland. Most Christmas tours will take you to Rovaniemi, where you’ll find Santa Claus’ Village, if you travel a little further north to Saariselka you’ll discover a little less ‘touristy’ yet still all the ingredients for a truly magical white Christmas experience. Four or five nights is a good time to spend in Lapland, allowing you to enjoy all the activities and increase your chances of seeing the Northern Lights too. In December there is approx. only two and a half hours of daylight – it takes a bit of time to acclimatise to the constant dark skies. As part of your Lapland experience you will be provided with the appropriate thermal snowsuits and outdoor boots as well as woollen socks and thermal mittens you’ll need to keep warm in the below zero temperatures, so you don’t need to worry about your suitcase being full of all the bulky stuff! The lead-up to Christmas is the most popular time to visit Lapland – you will need to book early (at least a year in advance), this also includes pre-booking your activities. Alternatively, if you’d like a little more flexibility and pay slightly lower prices, you can still enjoy your Lapland ‘Christmas’ in late November/early December, instead of travelling at Christmas itself.
An All-New Disney Adventure
Oh boy, gee wizz, we’re excited! Disney’s newest ship Disney Adventure will set sail from Singapore in December 2025. Create a city and cruise holiday with a few nights in Singapore before your magical 3 or 4 night Disney sailing or indulge in a double Disney delight and combine with Hong Kong Disney. Your family will love the combination of Disney fun on land and sea in these two great Asian cities. Onboard Disney Adventure explore seven imaginatively themed areas across the ship, each bursting with epic experiences. You’ll have the opportunity to meet friends from Disney, Pixar and Marvel, be immersed in the magic of Disney storytelling with favourite characters, imaginative dining, spectacular entertainment and themed events. A Disney cruise experience is not just for the kids! Adults will love their own exclusive spaces to relax – enjoy a treatment at the Senses Spa & Salon and indulge in elegant dining at Palo Restaurant.

Ring in the New Year in Tokyo
One of the best places to celebrate the start of a new year is undoubtedly Tokyo in Japan – you’ll get to take part in festivities for not just one day but for an entire week! Japan’s new year celebrations start from 29th December and continue until 4th January. To enjoy a cultural experience, the best spots to celebrate the new year in Tokyo is at Meiji Shrine or at Zoji-ji Temple where a monk rings the bell 108 times to denote the arrival of the new year. But if you like crowds and the party vibe, then head to Shibuya Crossing and partake in the countdown party – unquestionably one of the best outdoor New Year parties in the world.

MAKE A TOAST TO
THE GREAT OUTDOORS
YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK WHERE: Mostly Wyoming but also Montana & Idaho
W HER E: Alaska
BE ST TI ME TO G O : March-May & September-October
BE ST T I M E TO G O : June-August
K NOWN FO R ITS : Geothermal features & wildlife
K N OW N F O R I TS : Glaciers, dramatic scenery & wildlife
Yellowstone is the national park that spoils its guests. So much so, by the time you’ve spotted your umpteenth bison, elk or antelope, you’ll be tempted to roll your eyes; the terrain is that abundant with nature. Of course, we exaggerate, Yellowstone is far from boring. As the world’s first national park, it’s like all great originals; an absolute treasure. Bursting at its 2,221,766 acre seams with canyons and alpine rivers, over 10,000 thermal wonderments and an astounding 500 geysers, the real issue is where to look first. There are bald eagles soaring above its high mountain plateau and yellowgreen hillsides that swirl with gushing alpine rivers. Bison thud across a landscape that’s restless with volcanic activity and the dark rocks that (at first glance) look like bears, station themselves between lush forest and rippling mountainside. Yellowstone’s nature, whether it moves on four-paws or two wings provides endless jaw-dropping imagery. Only two per cent of Yellowstone is developed so you’d be wise to trundle across its terrain as slow and as laborious as the bison; admiring every spectacle, inhaling every scent and listening to the chorus of crickets; a chatter that seemingly rings out forever.

DENALI
H O USE O F T R AVEL
In Alaska’s Denali National Park everything looks fluffy, from the mountain-nudging clouds to the spongy green grass, even the brown grizzly bears look cuddly. But don’t let the illusions deceive you, here lies 6 million acres of untamed wilderness; a land where the clouds turn to storms and the bears aren’t renowned for their cuddles. Inherently wild, Denali is still the most accessible of Alaska's national parks and home to North America’s highest peak, Denali Mountain (Mount McKinley), but you’ll probably want to use the 150km road to see it. With a single track, of which only the bus is allowed to travel, minimal traffic allows for uninterrupted views across a breath-taking panorama, a dense carpet of grass merges into thickets of brown and thorns of red, while ice-white glaciers carve a pathway through both. Towering granite spires melt into snow-topped peaks, their slopes reflected in startling glacial lakes. Look closely and you’ll spot caribou, moose, dall sheep, the odd fox and snowshoe hares bounding across sheets of untouched snow. And if that’s not enough to have your face flat-pressed against the window, the opportunity to see golden eagles, wolves and cinnamon-coloured grizzlies surely will.
RAISE YOUR GLASS TO THE USA’S NATIONAL PARKS. HERE ARE PETER DAVIES, HOUSE OF TRAVEL WELLINGTON CBD’S ‘BEST FOR 2025’ NATIONAL PARK PICKS.
THE MIGHTY 5®
GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS
W H E R E : Utah
W HER E: Tennessee & North Carolina
B E ST TI ME TO G O : April-May & September-October
BE ST T I M E TO G O : May-October
KNOWN FOR I TS: Surreal scenery & unforgettable activities
K N OW N F O R I TS : Diverse ecosystems & extensive wildlife
Star-gazing from Mars, now made possible in Utah. Or so it’ll seem if you lie across the sandstone plateau of The Mighty 5®’s craggy savannah-coloured stone.
As America’s most visited national park (and one of few that doesn’t charge an admission fee) you’d think the Great Smoky Mountains would be heaving with sightseers, but with 522,427acres of wilderness and over 12,000km of back-country trails, you needn’t venture too far to find solitude.
Bathing in sunshine that penetrates a desert soil, the five national parks that make up this other-worldly terrain include Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Arches, Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks. Collectively the five parks are an expansive, seemingly limitless mass of natural creation, an abstract panorama of domes, cliffs and arches, 300-foot towers and arid humidity; a sizzling desert of brilliant, barren orange. Arrive a little earlier and experience sunrise over red rocks and jutting formations that spike, twist and curve. Stay a little later and watch as shadows from the setting sun give way to a glowing night sky; the transformation of light and colour, pink through to navy seeping into every pocket and fold. Time your visit to witness the full moon cast a silvery glare over the deep canyons and towers, or arrive late autumn and you’ll be presented with the Milky Way, its streaks smeared across the sky like an extra-terrestrial firework display. Nothing short of spell-binding, there’s never a bad time to explore Utah’s aptly-named Mighty 5®.
Trek eight kilometres off-grid and you’ll be in the thick of the world’s oldest mountain range, the Southern Appalachians. From afar they bathe in a milky blue haze, the colour of plant’s breath, it’s literally the result of respiration. Once inside the dense canopy, you’ll bear witness to an entire kaleidoscope of colour. From hammering woodpeckers to waterfalls where mist and rainbows hang suspended in the air, thanks to heavy annual rainfall the entire park is replete with lush greenery and a beguiling luminosity. You’ll be grateful for backpacks jammed with energy-boosting snacks and water refreshments but keep your tasty treats to yourself, the park’s also home to 2000 black bears. Avoid leaving your pack unattended and always utilise the bear-proof rubbish bins. Instead of bears, seek out the synchronous fireflies, a phenomenon that occurs in late May or early June (reservations required), they’re the only US species to blink in synchrony as part of their mating ritual.

MONTENEGRO GO NOW, BEFORE THE CROWDS CATCH UP You think you don’t know it but you do. A Mediterranean beauty wedged between its larger Balkan brothers, it’s the realm of coastal cities and red roofed houses; tiny churches on their own private islands and cathedral spires that poke the mountainside. Scenery you already love, but perhaps couldn’t place. Montenegro so often slips under the radar and stays, maybe purposely, well out of sight. From fjords that will render you speechless to the second deepest canyon on earth, this fascinating landscape remains under explored. And under exploited. Kotor Bay splits east and west, with flamboyant monasteries and elegant mosques enjoying a dalliance within one another’s presence. There’s 300km of unspoilt coastline and even in summer, when the entire country is drenched in Mediterranean sunshine, there’s a distinct lack of cruise ships dropping off their sightseers.
C R O AT I A ASK TO SEE THE MENU You’ve heard Croatia’s star attraction is Dubrovnik. A walled, cobblestone town clinging to the Dalmatian coastline. The editorials gush over its dazzling shoreline and striking medieval architecture, including its charming red-tiled roofs. They’ll tell you to explore the seashore by kayak and to take a boat to islets that litter the shoreline, and sure, you’d be a fool to ignore their advice, but many argue Croatia’s premier showpiece lies elsewhere. And that’d be in the kitchen. From grilled sardines and jet black risotto to a mid-morning meal known as marenda (when you’ll dine on a platter of artisan meat and cheese) Croatia is a gourmand’s dream in an idyllic setting. Italian influence is rife, from the handmade fuzi pasta to a national obsession with coffee and due to a cold northerly wind (perfect for drying meat) some of the most sought after prosciutto in the world. The views from the table are profound, but it’s what’s on your plate that will really impress.

M A LTA AGEING GRACEFULLY Malta makes you feel good. Fact. Whether it’s the 300 days of annual sunshine, a diving scene which is considered the best in Europe, or the rows of brightly painted balconies in its capital of Valletta, Malta looks as attractive in the flesh as it’s described in all the hearsay. An archipelago found just south of Sicily, sun and sea are dished out generously, but so are the stunning historic artefacts. With a 7000-year history, temples that pre-date the Pyramids and some of the oldest stone buildings in the world, the density of historic sites is so great, that Malta almost creaks under the weight of its own antiques. The architecture is profound; crumbling to the point of no return or meticulously restored, it’s all beautiful. And that’s just what lies above. Step into Malta’s dazzling water and discover a golden seabed scattered with shipwrecks, some of which have been sitting silently since World War II.

2025 is the year to view the
Aurora Borealis (aka the Northern Lights) in all their glory!
First things first. What exactly are the Northern Lights? The Northern Lights, also known by their more scientific name Aurora Borealis have fascinated people for centuries. Legend has it, Galileo Galilei discovered this incredible spectacle in 1619 and named it after Aurora, the Roman goddess of the dawn, and Boreas, the Greek god of the
north wind. The technical explanation … the lights occur when charged particles from the sun (thanks to solar winds) interact with Earth’s magnetic field. As these particles hit the atmosphere, they collide with gases like oxygen and nitrogen, causing them to emit light in a range of
colours lighting up the night sky. And in layman’s terms … the Aurora Borealis are an otherworldly lightshow, a watercolour painting of vivid colours— greens, pinks, purples, and sometimes reds that light up the night skies and astonishes anyone lucky enough to stand beneath!

Our top picks of where to see the Northern Lights
KELDA CAWOOD HOUSE OF TRAVEL BROWNS BAY
ICELAND
Iceland’s location, just below the Arctic Circle and close to the North Pole, and with its vast open spaces and minimal light pollution, the chances of witnessing the lights are enhanced due to the optimal viewing conditions. While the Northern Lights can theoretically be seen from anywhere in Iceland, it’s best to get away from the bright city lights of Reykjavik.
N O R WAY
Norway is another top spot, and Tromsø known as the ‘Gateway to the Arctic,’ is a favourite offering some of the most reliable Northern Lights sightings. Tromsø is perfect for aurora hunters who are looking for both convenience and adventure – highly recommend taking the Fjellheisen cable car for panoramic views of the lights.
Kelda shares her top tips on where to go and how best to make the most of this experience of a lifetime. Catching the Northern Lights isn’t just about picking the right place – it’s about timing. While the auroras can be unpredictable, there are certain times and conditions that increase your chances of witnessing this phenomenon. W H E N TO G O
While the lights are technically active year-round the best chance to catch a glimpse is from November to February in the Northern Hemisphere. G E T T I N G O F F T H E B E AT E N T R AC K
CANADA
SWEDEN
The farther you get from cities and streetlights, the better your chances of witnessing the full brilliance of the auroras. National parks, remote villages, and uninhabited areas with low light pollution are ideal. In other words, you’re getting off the beaten track! B E S T T I M E TO V I E W
Yellowknife, located in the heart of the aurora zone, boasts over 200 clear nights a year, making it one of the best places on the planet for aurora viewing. Whitehorse, the capital of the Yukon, also offers excellent sightings, and you can enjoy winter activities like cross-country skiing or enjoy a soak in the Takhini Hot Springs.
ALASKA
Alaska is one of the best viewing places in North America and the town of Fairbanks, with its dedicated Aurora Ice Museum, is a prime spot. For a truly indulgent experience watch the lights dance above your head whilst sitting in the soothing natural hot springs rock lake at Chena Hot Springs Resort. Or head to the top of Charlie Dome Mountain where you’ll have 360° unobstructed views from your Mongolian style yurt.
Sweden’s Abisko National Park, known for its ‘Blue Hole,’ a patch of sky that tends to stay clear even when surrounding areas are cloudy, is the place to be! Or choose to stay in the famous ice hotel in Jukkasjärvi or the small town of Kiruna, surrounded by wilderness, is another good option and offers plenty of other activities like snowmobiling and ice fishing.
The best time is typically between 9pm and 2am, although the lights can appear earlier or later, depending on solar activity. Clear skies are crucial. PAT I E N C E A N D P E R S I S T E N C E !
Even with all the right conditions, the Northern Lights are still a natural phenomenon – unpredictable and often elusive. Seeing them requires a great deal of patience and persistence but you will be rewarded with an experience of a lifetime. It’s best to plan for several nights of aurora hunting to maximize your chances.
FINLAND
Finland’s Lapland region is one of the most magical places to witness the Northern Lights. The town of Rovaniemi, known as the ‘official‘ hometown of Santa Claus, offers a blend of Christmas magic along with top-tier aurora viewing. You can stay in cozy glass igloos or wilderness lodges, where you can watch the lights from the comfort of your bed—no need to freeze outside!

Exquisite. Mesmerising. Surreal. Often referred to as ‘The Land of Fire and Ice,’ Iceland’s landscapes evoke a myriad of expressions, each reflecting their stunning power. Here, every glacier, lagoon, waterfall, erupting geyser and volcanic chamber, not to mention the incredible wildlife, will leave you in awe, making your eyes widen and your jaw drop at every turn. Grab your adventurous spirit and you will be rewarded with a truly magical bucket list holiday experience.
WHY WE LOVE IT: With it’s largely untouched and enchanting landscapes, Iceland is a nature-lovers paradise and with thrilling experiences, an adventurer’s dream. Despite its name, Iceland isn’t as icy as it may sound and provides both a wonderful summer and winter holiday adventure. Summers are surprisingly mild and green, and you can also expect plenty of daylight hours, especially around midsummer thanks to the ‘midnight sun’. During winter, the longer nights create ideal conditions for viewing the Northern Lights and spectacular frozen waterfalls.
MUST DO: Take your photo as you step across the two tectonic plates – Iceland sits on two continents and is the only place in the world where you can see the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the tectonic plates above ground. Just wrap up warm with an Iceland jumper! The Blue Lagoon provides an extraordinary spa experience - relaxing in the hot pools with snow falling, sipping on mulled wine in the fading light was nothing short of incredibly perfect.
Hot Tip | Don’t miss Gullfoss Falls, Iceland’s most iconic waterfall – both spectacular in winter and summer. If travelling in the summer months, visit the more popular attractions at night. The endless, bright summer nights make for a beautiful, golden hour experience – with less crowds.

WHY WE LOVE IT: With direct flights from Auckland, South Korea with its eclectic experiences and unique culture combined with art, history, food, tradition, futurism, coast, mountains and fun … is a fusion of excitement that will be sure to please! Amazing to visit anytime of the year, however, the autumn colours will rival Japan’s cheery blossom season – you must visit Mt Gangcheon Park an easy walk amongst thousands of maple trees, with majestic waterfalls and temples along the way. MUST DO: While in Busan visit Haedong Yonggungsa Temple (Temple by the Sea), one of the most sacred sites in South Korea with beautiful views out to sea. Be sure to take your swimsuit for a quick dip in the Sea of Japan. Hot Tip | Have a sweet tooth? Keep an eye out for the ice cream on a stick, covered in marshmallow and brûléed just before serving or share a bowl of Bingsu (Korean Shaved Ice). And swap your traditional coffee for a Korean Black Sesame Latte, I was addicted!

Turkey is a crossroads of cultures – a place where east meets west, history meets the new world, and incredible architecture rises seamlessly amongst natural wonders. History buffs will appreciate the museums and sacred mosques (just remember you’ll need to cover your shoulders and knees, and ladies to cover your head with a scarf), bustling bazaars with thrill bargain hunters (don’t forget to haggle!), and food lovers will go nuts in the lively culinary spice and food markets. WHY WE LOVE IT: From the warmth of the people, incredible food, and rich history everywhere — from Gallipoli to the ancient ruins of Ephesus, Turkey is a country that offers an amazing blend of culture, adventure, and hospitality. For a truly unique souvenir purchase the amazingly beautiful and unique Zultanite gemstone – an extraordinarily rare Turkish treasure, only found in one place in the world – Turkey’s remote Anatolian Mountains. MUST DO: A foodie walking tour – a great way to indulge in delectable Turkish cuisine, from flatbreads to dolmas and melt-in-your- mouth lamb shish kebabs… but recommend you do this it in the early part of your stay as it’s also a great way to get acquainted with the city. And, treat yourself and stay in a unique and authentic cave hotel. Highly recommend Cappadocia Caves Hotel in Goreme with its private natural stone rooms and magnificent location in the centre of Cappadocia with incredible views over the city.
Hot Tip | Download the Müzekart app after you have purchased your initial museum ticket, which will give you access to other museums across the country with audio guides included. To avoid extra fees, bring your own headset. And speaking of fees, recommend changing your money at the Ziraat Bank ATMs, they offer the cheapest exchange rate fees.

Hot Tip | Costa Rica is a coffee lover’s dream, with the finest brews grown straight from the plantations. One of our favourites is a coffee tour at Finca Rosa Bianca, a sustainable organic farm. Enhance your visit by pairing the tour with the Coffee Connoisseur’s tasting menu at their farm-totable restaurant, where you’ll savour at least five delicious courses, each perfectly complemented by their delicious coffee.

Nestled between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, you’ll discover Costa Rica. An enchanting country with a cosmopolitan capital, San Jose with art galleries and charming eateries, but beyond the city you’ll discover stunning landscapes, unexplored regions, active volcanoes, an incredible array of wildlife and countless adventures both on land and at sea. From jungle ziplines and cloud forests, whitewater rafting to surfing, it’s no wonder Costa Rica is regarded as one of the world’s top adventure capitals. WHY WE LOVE IT: The intrepid travellers’ ultimate fantasy: Two coastlines of unspoilt golden sands, a skyline piqued with volcanoes, wildlife galore and ancient tribes in the midst of a dense jungle. Costa Rica is nothing short of awe-inspiring. MUST DO: Whitewater rafting down the Pacuare River. With thrilling rapids, aweinspiring wilderness, and vibrant wildlife— toucans, monkeys, and blue morpho butterflies set amidst breathtaking ancient rainforests and dramatic, untouched canyons - it’s a must-do experience for adventure junkies and nature lovers alike.

Hot Tip | Don’t miss Ksamil’s stunning beaches, you will think you are in Greece! The majority are privately owned, with restaurants and cafes close by, and there are lots of local vendors selling local delights – fresh fruit, donuts and sweet treats. For just a few euros a day you can grab a beach lounger and umbrella – if you arrive after 3pm its even cheaper! Cash is still king in Albania so be sure you have plenty.

“Butrint is Albania’s crown jewel. This ancient UNESCO World Heritage site dates back to the 12th century BC, and its remarkably wellpreserved ruins are nothing short of breathtaking. Spread across a vast national park, exploring the site will take at least three hours to fully appreciate its beauty and history.”

Albania
Albania is Europe’s best kept secret … you’ll find amazing food, fascinating cities, beautiful beaches in this off-the-beaten-path Adriatic jewel, all without the large price tag often associated with other European cities. Centuries-old castles, UNESCO-listed hubs and Greek, Roman and Illyrian ruins beckon, while stunning beaches come to life during the summer and snow-capped mountain ranges provide winter fun. Now’s the time to visit this relatively untapped country while you can because, before you know it, Albania’s peaceful beaches, dramatic scenery and old-world charm will soon become the talk of the town. WHY WE LOVE IT: Albania is a remarkably beautiful and largely undiscovered country, not yet considered a major tourist hotspot by most. With no McDonald’s or Starbucks in sight, it offers plenty of reasons to visit this hidden treasure: pristine beaches free from crowds, UNESCO World Heritage sites, delightful weather, delicious cuisine, and, best of all, incredibly affordable prices. Imagine Greece or Croatia without the hefty price tag – but don’t wait too long to visit, as this gem won’t stay under the radar for much longer! MUST DO: Immerse yourself in the culture, enjoy your coffee Albanian style! Coffee served in a small compact glass with a side order of water or Raki (vodka brewed in Albania) – yum.

FIJI. FINDING YOUR PERFECT PARADISE! Whether you’re planning your first holiday to Fiji or your tenth, Fiji warms the heart and feeds the soul with a diversity of experiences catering for all tastes and ages. Paddy McCarthy from House of Travel Ponsonby shares his top tips and hidden gems. From picnicking on a deserted white sandy beach with a loved one, immersing yourself in the Fijian culture, tasting local dishes and snorkelling the crystal lagoons, to riding the rapids of Navua River on Viti Levu, there is no doubt you’ll find your place of happiness. 1 | It’s family friendly. Kids’ clubs feature everything from sandcastle building to treasure hunts. Some resorts even have their own inflatable water parks. Ask us about family bures which can accommodate several guests, inter-connecting suites and resorts which sleep up to three kids in one room.
2 | Even teenagers love it. For active teens, sand dune adventures and forest hikes keep the kilojoules burning. And if they need bragging rights for the school yard, there’s even shark snorkelling! 3 | It’s paradise for couples. With glistening resorts, private beach picnics and fine dining with toes in the sand, couples flock to Fiji. We highly recommend staying at Tokoriki Island Resort, an exclusive resort just for adults with complimentary afternoon tea and canapes.
1 | YA S AWA I S L A N D S
nce the domain of the budget conscious, now also boasting several 4-5 star resorts O for luxury seekers. Pristine unspoilt beaches offering amazing snorkelling, swimming with manta rays (May-Oct) and reef sharks or explore local villages for a glimpse of Fijian life. A three hour ferry ride from the mainland means the Yasawas is more secluded and the perfect antidote “for those wanting to get away from it all.” Hot Tip | Tick something incredible off your bucket list and arrive to your destination by helicopter.
2 | MAMANUCA ISLANDS
Under an hour from the mainland makes this beautiful area very popular. Options to suit all budgets, great family friendly snorkelling and Cloudbreak, one of the best surf breaks in the world. Families with children will appreciate the popular kids clubs at our resorts. Hot Tip | If snorkelling straight off the deck of an overwater bungalow takes your fancy, ask us about the adults-only Likuliku Lagoon Resort.
1
2
4 | You can get off the beaten track. Getting off the well-worn track could involve getting off the ground altogether — and onto a Blue Lagoon cruise. Sail to uninhabited tropical islands, anchor at their very own private beach in the Blue Lagoon, spend countless hours lazing on golden beaches and swim, snorkel or dive in crystal clear waters.
3
4
5 | It’s budget friendly. You don’t want to worry about the budget while chilling out. Look out for resort deals where kids stay, play and eat for free, usually up to the age of 11. All-inclusive is advantageous because you pay for everything in advance and often includes accommodation, meals, unlimited drinks, nightly entertainment and various water activities. ■
3 | D E N A R AU
Convenient for quick getaways and young families - from airport to resort in 20 minutes. No “postcard perfect” Fiji beach but high-end resort lagoon style pools have you feeling tropical in no time. Dining options galore on your doorstep or a short Bula Bus ride away.
Hot Tip | If travelling with kids check out the Big Bula Water Park and finish the day at the Denarau Marina. Enjoy a range of dining options, with meals your kids will love, without the resort prices. READY TO SAY BULA TO PARADISE? WE CAN GET YOU THERE. Singapore’s Changi Airport is consistently voted amongst the best stopovers in the world, and for good reason! Transferring through Singapore is a breeze thanks to efficient staff, short queues and easy terminal transfers. But it’s the facilities that really take the cake here. Chill with a drink in the rooftop cactus garden, take a dip in the open air pool, take the kids through the butterfly sanctuary, go to a movie or even book yourself a quick nap in one of the four Snooze Lounges located between Terminals 1-4.
Known simply as KLIA, Kuala Lumpur International Airport is one of the largest and most modern in the world. Most of the airlines are housed under one roof, which makes it very easy when transiting. The only exception are low cost airlines such as AirAsia, who have their very own dedicated terminal called KLIA2. That being said, both terminals are linked by an efficient train service.
Seoul’s award-winning Incheon International Airport is as captivating as it is fascinating. Its design pays tribute to Korean culture, with a roof inspired by a traditional temple, and features mini museums and cultural experiences including a reenactment of the royal guard ceremony. What truly sets this airport apart are its unique facilities we really like here, including a spa, ice skating rink, casino, gardens, and even a golf course!

Ideal for anyone with taste buds, this itinerary begins in Florence, home to famous art, the Renaissance Duomo and iconic Ponte Vecchio. Stay in a villa and pass afternoons in villages whose names sound like pasta noodles. Each will be somehow older than the one before, with medieval walls and Roman fortifications. Pause at Pisa for a photo with the Leaning Tower. Live like a local by shopping the markets for fresh produce before returning to your villa pool. Fantasize about a career change before returning to Florence.

QUICK GUIDE / G OING S OLO
ON A SOLO’ISH ADVENTURE Got an inner urge to get out and explore, but none of your travel buddies can make it happen? One big misconception is that you must be single if you’re travelling alone. But that’s definitely not the case. Many of our solo travellers have partners at home, busy professionals wanting to escape the rat-race to millennials enjoying their precious annual leave. Solo journeys are fast growing in popularity and for those who love travelling on their own but also enjoy the company of likeminded people.
Megan Bishop from House of Travel Taupo shares some of her favourite holiday ideas for going solo.
S OLO ’I SH Sure, you could hit the road all on your own. But going with a small group gives your solo trip more structure, guidance and safety, letting you get head-to-toe immersed in our world. G Adventures have introduced a new travel style – called Solo-ish. They are exclusive for solo travellers, so everyone on the tour is a stranger at the start. You can choose to share a room or go with the My Own Room option. The tour leaders are females and travellers from 18 years and up are welcome on their tours.
Safari for one, please. One trick for savvy solo travellers is avoiding hefty single supplements. Travelling like a leopard and prefer the solitary life? Join fellow singles for a stay at South Africa’s family run private game reserve Makutsi Safari Springs, which charges guests the same price, whether or not they travel in a herd. Sitting on 12,000 acres of pristine wildlife conservation reserve, it offers individual bungalows, nature warm mineral spring pools and fantastic game viewing.
Forget flying solo. It’s time to sail solo! You may board the ship yourself, but on a cruise you’ll never feel alone once onboard (unless you want to!). Cruising is a popular way to holiday as there is always something to do, people to meet, and it is a safe and hassle-free way to travel. Most ships have meet-and-greet sessions for solo cruisers and some have specific tables assigned for those who may not want to eat alone, plus there is a wide range of activities and events on offer, providing plenty of ways to make friends onboard. Hot Tip | Many ships offer single staterooms designed just for one with prices to match. Norwegian Cruise Line offers single studios on its resort-style ships, which you’ll find heading to Alaska, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. No surprise these rooms are extremely popular, we recommend booking early.
All the single ladies!

DISCOVERING STANLEY PARK
NORTH SHORE MOUNTAIN BIKING
It’s just hockey. In Canada, you don’t need to specify the ice; it’s a national given. It’s also a national obsession.
By wheel – that’s how you want to explore Vancouver’s Stanley Park. Because four-hundred acres is no easy distance on foot. Not unless you have a hankering for a heel blister.
Boasting a showcase of leading – and unusually named - mountain bike trails, Vancouver’s North Shore harbours some of the most challenging off-road mountain-biking in the world.
Rent a bike and navigate the 8.8km seawall – and dedicated bicycle path – that flanks the city waterfront; absorbing ocean views and shiny skyline vistas.
Trails are cut from age-old logging routes and die-hard mountain bikers forging their own clandestine routes in the forest. From easy cross-country paths to technical downhill, the terrain is a natural labyrinth of logs, boulders and ravines, combined with man-made obstacles and muddy gullies.
Imagine 18,000 passionate fans screaming in your ears, the thwack of puck on stick and the constant hiss of razor-sharp blades slicing through ice. If you’re lucky enough to be in Vancouver at the same time as the Vancouver Canucks, throw down your Canadian bucks and buy tickets to a game. At the Rogers Arena, the atmosphere is guaranteed electric, with erratic bursts of 80s rock music, bellowing fans and a heady mix of popcorn, beer and hot dogs. Gather rink-side 30-minutes prior to opening face-off and watch the players go through their warmups. If you hear the sudden ‘thfffft’ of a wayward puck, you better dive behind the perspex.

GROUSE GRIND HIKING TRAIL
HELI-SKIING IN WHISTLER
The Grouse Grind challenge. Are you game? Or deranged? Because either works. If you possess equal measures madness, muscle and fitness, Vancouver’s Grouse Mountain hike is infamous for being one of the cruellest workouts in the city.
The pinnacle of any high-octane ski experience, heli-skiing combines the very best of two adrenalin-pumping experiences; high-altitude helicopter flights with off-trail skiing.
A near-vertical 2.5km climb, comprising 2,830 steps, your heart will be pounding within minutes. Two hours later, sweat drenched, thighs shaking and face grimacing, you’ll reach the mountain’s summit. Hopefully! There’s a reason The Grouse Grind is referred to as ‘Mother Nature’s Stairmaster’ and that’s because Mother Nature is a merciless wench. Thankfully, humans built the SuperSkyride Aerial Tramway. A downhill descent is strictly forbidden, so you might as well hitch a lift back to the city. Soak up the views of downtown Vancouver and the surrounding islands. There’s a cold beer at the top and you’ve earned it.
So if the snow-shrouded mountain scenery doesn’t steal you of breath, the fast descent down its freshly powdered slopes surely will. High in Whistler’s backcountry, where there’s nothing but virgin snow and hair-raising gradients, heightened senses are a given - get ready for the rush.
It’s late April so the bears are emerging from hibernation and there’s loads of them! Today we must’ve seen at least 10, including an angry mother bear with three bashful cubs. She was teaching them how to flip stones and find mussels, but we were laughing because those cubs were not in the slightest bit interested. They just wanted to play and fight with one another and she was getting irate. Then we spotted even more grizzlies and one of them started to itch his back against a tree – we couldn’t believe it, talk about key moments! It was just like watching Baloo from the Jungle Book. I won’t be forgetting that for a while! Melissa Duder, House of Travel Taupo
If you’d like a little more time to gather your thoughts and to appreciate Whistler’s exceptional beauty, swap the heli-skiing for snowmobiling. Novices can take lessons or picturesque mountain tours, while veteran powder hounds can book snow safaris through the most spectacular white playground in the Northern Hemisphere.

1 | VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE With such a variety of tour-based adventures available (and with the world the size that it is) there’s a style of trip to unearth every corner of the globe. You’ll find itineraries that cater to whatever your travel desires are – from cycling tours and mountaineering expeditions, wildlife safaris and trail walks. Forget the ‘fly-by’ approach that’s previously been linked to touring, trips are highly detailed, with in-depth exploration throughout. With an average 15 people per tour, you won’t be fighting for the views or unable to get the attention of your tour guide. In fact, such is the nature of a small tour, you’ll consider your guide a close friend by the end.

2 | THE INACCESSIBLE MADE ACCESSIBLE
From traditional foods to customs you wouldn’t otherwise be aware of, small group touring ensures you experience local cultures first-hand. Independently, you might successfully navigate your way to Tuscany’s stunning countryside, but in a tour group you’ll also discover a centuryold Tuscan farmhouse – you’ll step indoors and meet the farmer and his wife, he’ll pour you Cinzano and she’ll serve a huge bowl of fresh tortellini. You’ll often have the opportunity to live like a local in unique residences with local hosts. You get greater authenticity and more surprising experiences with a guided tour.
3 | FORGE LASTING FRIENDSHIPS Small group touring totally eliminates the solitary nature of independent travel. With guided tours you make instant friends the first day of your trip – over dinner (wine helps) while regaling tales of previous travelling antics. You’re sharing every moment and memory with others, every giggle and every embarrassment, as well as everything from the breath-taking scenery to the unique local cultures. Imagine the incredible people you will meet as you share an extra spicy Sri Lankan curry or the friendships formed while chatting with Myanmar monks at the top of Mandalay Hill.

4 | SAVE YOURSELF SOME TIME The itinerary is pre-planned, right down to the finest detail. From what time you need to catch the local bus, to the very tickets you’ll need to board with. Because gallivanting the globe always presents time-consuming challenges, from language barriers, to customs, transport and finding legitimate pricing, guided holidays work it all out for you – beforehand. And because you have no responsibilities you’ll have oodles more time to work with. More time for the important things – sightseeing, socialising, eating, exploring and above all, making unforgettable memories.
5 | HICCUPS? WHAT HICCUPS? With 6,500 languages spoken worldwide, speaking the local lingo is difficult. Travel independently and you’ll face all manner of stumbling blocks, from new-city navigation, to tricky immigration and laborious passport handling, but take a guided tour and you’ll gain the expertise of a savvy tour guide. Common
pit-falls are avoided; decoding the subway, finding central (and available) accommodation, ensuring taxi-drivers don’t take both you and your money for a ride, it’s all made easy.
6 | KNOWLEDGE IS POWER With years of experience under their belt, what travel’s leading tour groups don’t know about the destinations they visit, isn’t worth knowing. Take a guided tour and your guides will constantly – and effortlessly – smooth the way. They’re consistently on-hand to answer the unknowns for you. From the Wi-Fi access code to knowing which adapter will work, the best places to eat and how much to tip, they’re a walking travel encyclopaedia at your very disposal. From the first day to the very last, enjoy the added reassurance that someone else has your back.

with the kids in tow Recommended by Antony Boomer, House of Travel Dunedin
I H AV E B E E N WA N T I N G to take my boys somewhere extraordinary for ages. For a physical, emotional and sensory experience they would never forget, we decided on Vietnam. Whether you’re navigating the narrow, steep and twisty trails through the rice paddies around Sapa, or the mustard coloured walls of Hoi An; sleeping in a stilted homestay, or absorbing the sobering (and at times, knee weakening) Cu Chi Tunnels, Vietnam is most definitely extraordinary. Observing the local way of life is key. One day we came across a chap wandering through a Mekong canal plucking prawns from the riverbank for his lunch. At the same time an elderly lady joined in with a net and started scooping fish out of the water. My boys were delighted. As was I — to take them out of their comfort zone and into something quite remarkable. Highlight | Kids love the nation’s revered dish, ‘Pho’. in undiscovered Bhutan Recommended by Kelsey Tills, House of Travel Calder & Lawson
A LT H O U G H I T I S VOT E D one of the world’s top travel destinations, very few make it to Bhutan. Today it remains one of the last untouched destinations on the planet and the country doesn’t even have traffic lights! The most direct flight from Auckland is with Singapore Airlines & Drukair into Paro Airport, an airstrip at an elevation of 2,200m. With breathtaking mountain scenes, strong Buddhist traditions, an emphasis on happiness and a carefully managed tourism policy, Bhutan was closed to the outside world until 1974, but it is quietly revealing itself to travellers and is a nation which gauges wealth by its citizens’ happiness levels, rather than GDP. They appreciate the simple things in life here. I was also pleased to discover the Bhutanese still dress in traditional costume. Their unique garments have evolved over thousands of years but men still wear the Gho, a knee length robe somewhat resembling a kimono, and women wear the Kira: a long, ankle-length dress accompanied by a light outer jacket. Highlight | I was amazed to discover a national park created just for yetis, the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery.

of Sri Lanka Recommended by Tracey Edgecombe, House of Travel New Plymouth
N O O N E E V E R T H I N K S of Sri Lanka, we always fly over the top en-route to someplace else. And yet it has so much to offer. For one, it’s less trodden than parts of India and Southeast Asia, and with 2000-plus years of culture all packed into one small space, you’re presented with world-class sites without the world-class crowds. Achingly scenic, the eyes switch between flourishing tea plantations, dramatic mountains and verdant rainforest, and that’s before they’ve adjusted to the impossibly green landscape. Sri Lankans are friendly, welcoming and as hospitable as their land is lush. Plus, they are culinary masters. From Chinese delicacies to Indian samosas, in between my countless cups of tea, I was gorging on delectable curries, roti and ‘Hoppers’ — Sri Lanka’s answer to a pancake. Gym here I come! Highlight | Making it up to the top of Sigiriya (Lion Rock), one of Sri Lanka’s most striking natural monuments.

Why choose to river cruise? Eight very good reasons to get on-board. 1 | Holidays without hassle. No need to
drive, navigate a map, cook, clean or even make your own bed, your days are your own, to do as much or as little as you like. 2 | You see an awful lot. Excursions every day; the likelihood of a new town or city every morning; no heavy road traffic. You see a huge amount in a short timeframe. Uncover region upon region of fascinating history, while tasting gourmet food and observing the local way of life. 3 | Small ships, big camaraderie. Much more petite than their ocean-cruising big sisters, passenger numbers are smaller on a river cruise. The on-board ambience feels like a community of like-minded globe-trotters. With guest numbers ranging between 130 and 170 there’s no hiding amidst a sea of faces. Dining is a particularly sociable affair and guests are encouraged to sit at a different table each evening.
4 | Food, glorious food. Fresh Italian coffee with breakfast? Of course.
There’s also a continental buffet and a team of chefs to whip up your eggs. Lunch is light (great if you’ve just gobbled a framboise tart from the patisserie) and often alfresco for sun-soaked refreshment. Dinners, albeit smart-casual, are elegant and à la carte. 6 | Everything is done for you. Unlike a self-organised holiday, no time’s wasted tracking down taxis, negotiating fares, or organising transfers. It’s already done. Feeling parched after a day of sightseeing? There will be iced drinks and cold towels on your return. In dire need of a cup of tea? Someone’s already squeezing your Dilmah.

Suites are comfy. As roomy
as a hotel room, the space is ample for two. The bathrooms are generously sized; enough to swing a cat and a couple of kittens too. Most River Ships have balconies or wall-to-wall panoramic windows; you’ll awaken to natural light and the river gliding past the foot of your bed.
52
|
H O USE O F T R AV EL
7 | Ample free-time. Excursions are usually morning or afternoon, with a return to the ship for lunch, but there’s no pressure to join. Take some time to relax on the ship’s deck, visit the
spa or maybe opt for a bike ride along the river, many river companies now offer these complimentary. Sit and catch a few rays, or book yourself an appointment at the salon — a new do for dinner is always nice. 8 | Entertainment is low key. There are no jazz hands here. River cruise entertainment usually includes onboard lectures (destination history, WWII experts), cultural shows, nightly movies and the relaxing medley of a pianist.

History has never looked quite as beautiful as it does from Amsterdam to Budapest. The old taverns tell a story while the merchant houses store secrets; gothic architecture astounds and romance prevails. Bygone residents have all left their stamp, but they also left good wine, beer and coffee.
Forge a path towards the Mediterranean, gorging on French cuisine as you glide between château and township. Feast on gooey fromage in Lyon, the gourmet capital of the world, while navigating the Rhône to the Côte d’Azur. Balmy nights and bouillabaisse await.

The Queen of all river cruises is the Nile. Super popular with all the ancient history we know and love about the Pyramids and ancient Pharaohs – it’s a true childhood dream bucket list holiday experience. The meandering Mekong River is the thriving lifeline of Southeast Asia. Experience a different view every day as you cruise through Vietnam and Cambodia. Enjoy excursions to local villages, floating markets and ancient Buddhist monasteries as you experience an unforgettable fusion of distinctive sights, colourful cultures, and ancient traditions.

This major track begins in the stunning Flinders Ranges and wanders through five wine regions before reaching Cape Jervis. The reasonable can select just a portion, which you can do on your own or guided. We love the luxurious 4-day guided Arkaba Walk, which follows the Wilpena Pound and includes meals and comfortable accommodation — complete with ‘swags,’ the canvas beds of Australia’s pioneers. The 5-day Park Trek through the Flinders Ranges is also breath-taking.
The guided walk on private reserve is perfect for those loving to challenge themselves and enjoy a little luxury at the end of the day. You’ll wander the World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforests and the Spicers Peak Nature Reserve before indulging in a fine tipple and 5-star fare. Accommodation is the permanent camp at Spicers Canopy and the indulgent Spicers Peak Lodge. The final evening’s 7-course degustation menu should keep you motivated.
Like doing Australia’s famous drive, but with your feet — and the advantage here is that when the road turns inland, the trail continues to follow the stunning coastline. You can do it yourself by booking the well maintained campsites, but we recommend the memorable 3 or 4 day guided variations, which entitle you to custom-designed sustainable lodges and small thrills like firepits, rainforest showers and terracotta bowls to soak those tired feet.
Hot Tip | If you’re up for a challenge, don’t miss the rugged beauty of Wilpena Pound; starting early can reward you with golden sunrise views over the Flinders Ranges. Pack extra water and plan to refill at every opportunity—reliable water sources can be scarce, especially in summer.
Hot Tip | Don’t underestimate the power of early mornings. The sunrise views from the trail are spectacular, especially as the mist rolls off the mountains and the birds come alive. Plus, starting your day early helps you avoid the midday heat, leaving you with more energy for the rest of the walk.
Hot Tip | For a more private sunset experience, set up at Blanket Bay instead of the Twelve Apostles lookout. This remote section is spectacularly scenic, less crowded, and allows you to fully immerse in the coastal wilderness without the rush of tour groups.

This jaw-dropping track just keeps getting better. Follow the pristine coastline from Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin, through the Margaret River wine region. Do it yourself by booking a selection of comfortable campsites, or take it a bit easier with guided glamping and lodge options that offer you portions or the full track. However you go, treat yourself to wine tastings along the way — after all, you need fuel for those footsteps!
Perhaps Australia’s most in-demand walk, this one books out early and with good reason. Every step of this World Heritage-listed area is utterly breath-taking, from Cradle Mountain to Lake St. Clair, with many of the highest peaks in Tasmania in between. There are guided options for all sorts. Adventurers with snowshoes can set off yearround on an expert-led camping tour, while the rest of us can ease into first-class with luxury lodge stays and even an outing by helicopter.
This gentle guided walk offers a unique combination of river cruising and walking. Days are spent exploring the gorgeous river valley, while accommodation is onboard a modern, exquisitely comfortable houseboat with locally inspired meals. (This is a perfect choice for groups with varying mobility — some guests choose to cruise during the days.) Expert guides bring your attention to wildlife and you’ll enjoy a final lunch at the award-winning Wilkadene Woolshed Brewery.
Hot Tip | Bring snorkel gear! There are hidden reefs and rock pools near Prevelly and Gnarabup Beach that offer crystal-clear views of the underwater world, where you can catch glimpses of marine life and cool off along the way. While the Cape to Cape Walk doesn’t directly pass through the beach areas, they are close enough enjoy them.
Hot Tip | Schedule an early detour to Cradle Mountain summit if weather permits; mornings often have clearer views. Also, remember to have a few quick-dry bags for your essentials, as Tasmania’s weather can shift from sunny to rain in a heartbeat!
Hot Tip | Keep an eye out for native wildlife at dawn and dusk from your cruise boat or along the riverbanks—they’re often most active during these times. Bring a small set of binoculars for spotting koalas, kangaroos, and an amazing variety of birdlife in their natural habitat.

Take advantage of complimentary snow host tours, cat skiing, and even hot drinks for post-powder warmth, or add on a stopover in an iconic US city, such as Los Angeles, San Francisco or glitzy Las Vegas.

Everyone knows Canada is a haven for snow lovers, but why? The biggest wonder about skiing here is the diverse selection of resorts. From vast slopes to cosy ski-in ski-out accommodation, rustic towns and areas with breath-taking scenery, there is a spot to suit everyone. Find gentle groomers, designated beginner areas, off-piste, tree runs and exhilarating heli-ski drops. More pros include free snow host and/or ambassador programmes in every resort, some of the best-recognised race training and children’s ski schools on the ski-scene, and a distinct lack of queues. And with direct flights from Auckland straight into Vancouver, Canada ticks a lot of boxes.

HOT TIP
By LEANNE NEWTON, House of Travel Upper Riccarton
“Restaurants in Niseko are often small and book out quickly, so always book in advance. A wonderful backup plan is Hirafu’s food truck scene.”
JAPAN
There is something magical about skiing in Japan. With over 600 resorts from the mainland of Honshu, to the Island of Hokkaido, small parks, knee deep powder, quirky resorts (some with amusement parks) and the charm of resorts such as Nozawa Onsen which are steeped in tradition and history, it’s also home to Niseko, one of the snowiest resorts in the world, with an enviable 16 metres of annual snowfall. On the mountains you’ll enjoy light, dry powder and off them you’ll find remarkable culture and Japanese cuisine. As NZ’s closest country for a Northern Hemisphere snow season, ski December through to April without suffering the dreaded jet lag.
