Norfolk Island Accommodation & Sightseeing
General Information Accommodation Ratings To assist with the selection of your Pacific Islands accommodation we have created our own rating system allowing you to compare each property. These are personal ratings offered by our people from their own experience and should therefore be used as a guide only. These ratings may alter throughout the year due to a change of circumstances. Norfolk Island ratings however are based on the official Australian AAA Star Rating Scheme. Basic accommodation often with shared facilities and based more around an authentic local experience. Properties in this category have a limited range of facilities and services. Standard rooms, clean and comfortable usually with basic furnishings and private en suites. Typically most properties would include a restaurant and bar but have a limited range of other guest facilities and services. Moderate accommodation with a reasonable range of room facilities and comfortable standard, usually with a wide range of recreational and leisure activities available for guest enjoyment. Superior accommodation offering a high level of comfort in rooms with quality furnishings and fixtures. First class accommodation offering the very best quality services with detailed focus on high customer satisfaction. There tends to be greater attention to personalised service and a strong focus on the quality of food and beverages. A half star is noted when the level of service and facilities falls between two grades. Grading accommodation can be quite subjective and generally speaking the standard and services will be in line with the price paid. Please check with your travel consultant to ensure you get the accommodation that best fits your needs. Price Indicator: The price is provided as a guide only. It is in New Zealand dollars based on low season per person share twin pricing unless otherwise specified and is correct at the time of publishing. The actual price may differ to that indicated in this brochure due to currency fluctuations, special events or peak periods. Your travel consultant will quote you the actual price at time of booking. Child Policy: Please note bedding configuration varies between properties and in some cases with different room types within a property. Some hotels also offer family bonuses and specials. Your travel consultant will help you choose the hotel to best suit you and your family’s needs. Look out for our “gems” of information scattered throughout our Pacific Islands brochure.

PACIFIC ISLANDS You’re a very lucky Kiwi. Why? Because as a New Zealander you have some of the most beautiful tropical Pacific Islands in the world at your fingertips. Destinations such as Samoa, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Niue, Tonga and Norfolk Island, are all just a short flight away. These are places that some people can only dream about. Experience as much or as little as you like, relax, explore or re connect with loved ones. If you think that the Pacific Islands only offer white sand beaches, crystal blue waters and not a lot else, then think again! Let us take you on a journey to show you otherwise. We love the Pacific Islands and recommend you talk to your consultant to ensure you book the destination that best suits your needs at the best possible price. Each of these islands are unique in their own way so here are selection of tips to help make your decision easier.
6 T I PS FO R YOU R HOLIDAY
Vanuatu offers diversity, culture, tradition and adventure, where natural beauty and unique experiences await you. Coral reefs, diving, active volcanoes and shipwrecks are all just waiting to be discovered. If diving is what you are travelling for, the best diving is found at Million Dollar Point located off the coast of Espiritu Santo. Here is where you’ll literally find a million dollars worth of discarded U.S. artillery.
1 / HIDDEN TREASURES IN SAMOA The treasured islands of Samoa offer a land where unspoilt beauty, customs, cultures and courtesies still exist. The friendliness of the locals will ensure you enjoy a very special holiday experience. Some people simply can’t relax on the beach or by the pool for too long without going stir crazy. Others like to mix up their holiday indulgence with a little activity between siestas. Fortunately, Samoa can offer the best of both worlds, from relaxation and pampering to adventure and excitement. We recommend hiring a car to explore some of Samoa’s hidden gems. There sure are a lot, but one of the best is Lalomanu on the South Coast. It’s one of Samoa’s best beaches and the kind of Utopian hideaway we all dream about.

3 / VIBRANT VANUATU
2 / FRIENDLY ISLANDS OF TONGA If you have a sense of adventure and are looking for a real ‘back to basics’ island experience then Tonga is a place you should consider. The pace is slow and an adventurous spirit about life exists. The beautiful islands are dotted with natural harbours, secluded coves and countless isolated beaches. So how about you let go of the remote, and GO somewhere remote! For those who like to explore we recommend experiencing these islands by sailboat or kayak.
5 / BREATHTAKINGLY UNIQUE NIUE Imagine a coral atoll where the year-round daytime temperature varies from 25°C to 29°C, where people are friendly, adventure activities are amazing, there’s no air pollution, phone numbers have only four digits and the New Zealand dollar is the official currency. Welcome to Niue the largest raised coral atoll in the world and one of the smallest countries on earth. We recommend travelling to Niue from July-October because that’s when the Humpback whales arrive to nurse their young. Niue is one of only a handful of places in the world where you are allowed to swim with whales – and let’s be honest whales trump everything!
Namua Island, Upolu
4 / BOUNTIFUL NORFOLK ISLAND Nice and close Norfolk Island is easily accessible and only a two and a half hour flight from Auckland. At only 8 kilometres by 5 kilometres Norfolk Island might be small in size, but it packs a huge amount of attractions. Outstanding sunsets exist by night and by day, nature-lovers make a beeline for One Hundred Acres Reserve, replete in tall ferns, frigate birds and magnificent fig trees while bush walkers are rewarded with stunning costal views. We recommend Emily Bay as a sublime beach spot - a beautiful mix of gold sand and emerald sea, with the added bonus of giant turtles that often visit.
6 / TASTE OF FRANCE IN NEW CALEDONIA Vive la difference with New Caledonia! A land of contrast, splendour and excitement, you’ll find it all here. Unspoilt beaches, the bright lights of nightclubs, casinos and the magnificent cuisine will ensure you enjoy your ‘French’ experience. New Caledonia is only a two and half hour flight from New Zealand so it’s the perfect excuse for a long weekend away. If you would rather explore at your own pace we recommend hitting the road as one of the best ways to really experience New Caledonia’s beautiful and diverse ‘Grand Terre’. It’s easy to pick up a rental car at the International airport and the islands well-maintained roads and signage make road tripping a breeze. It takes about eight hours to drive from end to end – just be sure to remember to drive on the right-hand side of the road.

EXPERIENCE HOLIDAYS The Pacific Islands have diverse landscapes, pristine beaches and aquatic playgrounds aligned with a variety of resorts and accommodation. There’s no doubt we can tailor your tropical getaway to suit your needs and wants. From self-drive packages, surfing excursions, eco tours, romantic dining, soft adventure, fishing expeditions and more we can create an experience holiday that’s perfect for you.
EXPLORE HIDDEN GEMS IN SAMOA Self-Drive Samoa has so many hidden treasures to discover and hiring a rental car is the perfect way to explore at your leisure. Upolu, the most popular island has loads of sightseeing options. Spots that we recommended are: To Sua Trench, located down on the South Coast it’s an iconic swimming hole that is reached by a long ladder, it can be deep and is tidal so best for confident swimmers. Also in this area is Lalomanu Beach, one of the best in Samoa. Togitogiga Waterfall, in the village of Saleilua is a popular swimming and picnic spot. Closer to town you will find the Piula Cave Pool, a fresh water pool that runs under an old Methodist Church or Papase’ea Sliding Rocks for a bit of a natural water slide experience. Head to Apia for the markets and a good range of restaurants to try. Drivers are required to get an endorsement on their full license before driving in Samoa. Driving is on the left-hand side and is relatively safe and easy with a speed limit around 56km/h with slower speed restrictions in villages. Keep an eye out for wandering dogs and pigs. Package Inclusions: 5 nights accommodation in a Deluxe Room at Tanoa Tusitala Hotel, buffet breakfast daily per adult, WiFi and a 5 day rental car hire. Airport pick up/drop off fees are additional and payable direct. Price Guide From: $789
SURFIN’ IN SAMOA Sinalei Reef Resort & Spa Upolu Island has a number of great surf spots, many of which are located on the South Coast. Enjoy surfing in crystal clear, warm, tropical water. Get front row access to the best of Samoa’s local breaks through Manoa Tours. The surf guides have unparalleled experience and with their knowledge of local conditions, currents, wind and waves, you will find yourself in the best hands possible. Proximity of breaks also means you’re the first in the water and the last to leave. Nearby breaks include Coconuts (right hand reef pass), Salani (right hand reef pass), Boulders (large lava rock left hand point), TafaTafa (right hand reef pass), Nuusafee Island (an unforgettable left hander that wraps around a nearby deserted island). Surfing in Samoa is better suited to intermediate and advanced level surfers rather than beginners due to the fact that the waves break directly onto the reef and currents can be harsh at times. Package Inclusions: 5 nights accommodation in a Traditional Garden View Villa, tropical buffet breakfast and afternoon tea daily per adult, complimentary use of snorkel gear and kayaks, a room upgrade on arrival and return airport transfers plus five surf sessions for two, a one hour massage per person and 1G WiFi. SOFT ADVENTURE IN TONGA Swim with whales The best thing about Tonga is the authentic, unspoilt and genuine feeling you get while experiencing a real taste of Polynesian life. From July to October large schools of southern humpback whales take shelter in the tropical-reef protected waters of Tonga to give birth to their young. These shallow and warm waters provide the perfect viewing platform with excellent visibility from which to admire these beautiful creatures. You may hear the occasional singing of courting male humpbacks, a natural symphony that can carry up to 100 kilometres through the open ocean and for those lucky enough to swim alongside these gentle giants it is an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime experience. Tours take up to a maximum of 12 passengers with only 4 at a time being able to swim with the whales, it’s likely you’ll need to take turns in the water. Whale watching and swimming is prohibited on Sundays. Package Inclusions: 5 nights accommodation in a Superior Room at Tanoa Dateline Hotel, buffet breakfast daily per adult, WiFi, return airport transfers plus a whale watching and swimming tour including snorkel gear, wet suits, bottled water and lunch.

There’s truly nowhere quite like Samoa. From the moment you arrive on this idyllic nation’s shores, you will be greeted by smiles and the lively ‘Talofa’ of the locals.
A special and important part of Fa’a Samoa – ‘the Samoan way’ – are the traditions. Check out the song and dance such as the Siva at a unique cultural show, you’ll leave enchanted by the skill, grace and passion evident in the various dances, ranging from slow and captivating to thrilling and fast. The colourful culture and welcome attitude is not all you’ll find here – Samoa is packed with natural delights like glistening turquoise lagoons, towering volcanic landscapes, blissful beaches and banyan groves, all of which offer once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for adventure or relaxation – whichever holiday type suits you. There are ten islands that make up Samoa, with Upolu (home to Apia, the nation’s capital) and Savai’i as the main two. Each island has its own unique flavour and feel – though both are equally delectable. There’s a different type of accommodation to suit every need in Samoa. No visit here is complete without spending at least one night in an open-sided, thatched beachfront fale, lulled to sleep by waves lapping the shore. If you’re splashing out, there are, of course, deluxe resorts where you can unwind in luxury, or there’s a complete range of accommodation in between. Samoa… serene, spectacular and super special.
SAM OA
OUR FAVOURITE THINGS TO SEE AND DO Sleep in a fale on the beach – If you are after a true taste of Samoa we suggest you live like a local and stay in one of the many beach fales dotted around the coastline. They are mostly family-operated on village land and enjoy some of Samoa’s most scenic vistas and million-dollar scenery.
Catch a local bus – Riding one of Samoa’s brightly coloured buses is a must-do experience and a great insight into the local way of life.
Experience Alofaaga Blowholes – Located in Taga on Savai’i, powered by waves, these roaring jets of water defy gravity and shoot skyward at an incredible speed. For extra entertainment locals like to throw coconuts into them and watch them fly high into the air.
Enjoy a Fiafia night – Many resorts and hotels host weekly Fiafia nights, with entertaining traditional Samoan dancing and food.
Discover the Falealupo Canopy Walkway – Located in the Falealupo Rainforest Preserve, Savai’i, the walkway is 40 metres off the ground and passes spectacular huge banyan trees.
Sample the local food – There are many foods to try while in Samoa, we highly recommend these: Paulsami – a dish consisting of coconut milk, taro leaves and corn beef, Oka- raw fish and Umu – similar to a Hangi, food is wrapped in banana leaves and cooked in the above the ground oven of hot volcanic stones.
Relax at picture-perfect Lalomanu Beach – Hands down one of Samoa’s best looking beaches, this is the paradise we all dream about.
Dine at Paddles Restaurant – A well-established restaurant in the main township of Apia. The menu includes a display of both Samoan and Italian cuisine to tantalise the taste buds. A relaxing time is guaranteed with good company, great food and excellent service.

BEACH FALES Complete your Samoan holiday experience by staying in one of the many traditional thatched open-sided fales that dot the coastline. These fales are mostly on village land and are usually family operated, ensuring a warm welcome and friendly service. These fales give a whole new meaning to the term beachfront. They are scattered all around the coast of the two main islands, Upolu and Savai’i, consequently they enjoy some of Samoa’s most scenic vistas. What better way to end an enjoyable day’s sightseeing than by letting the gentle lapping of waves lull you to sleep. While beach fales are back-to-basics accommodation, any lack of modern amenities is more than compensated for by the chance to live like a local amid some million-dollar scenery.
Faleolo International Airport Satapuala Mulifanua Wharf Faleatai Lefaga
A beach fale experience is for the adventurous, who are happy just to pack a lavalava and a toothbrush. After all, you won’t need much more. Exchange the usual hotel experience for the more modest facilities of a traditional open-sided fale (with pull down blinds for added privacy). Share a bowl of kava with hospitable locals and get amongst their everyday life. If you break into a sweat with the absence of airconditioning make the most of the clear crisp waters within steps of your fale.

Espiritu Santo is also a dream destination for diving enthusiasts, the main attraction being the wreck of the luxury liner SS President Coolidge, which sank just off Santo in 1942 after striking a mine. Still almost intact, the liner is considered one of the best and most accessible wreck dives in the world, you can still see guns, cannons and personal supplies left by some of the soldiers. If you want to see the whole wreck it takes around 10-15 dives due to its sheer size. A bonus for divers is that close by is the aptly named Million Dollar Point, where the American forces dumped all their surplus equipment at the end of the war. In addition to these there are many other sites to explore in this underwater playground.

EXPERIENCE TANNA
Mt Yasur, Tanna
The glow emanating from Mt Yasur attracted Captain Cook to Tanna in 1774 and the classic
volcano has proved a magnet for visitors to the island ever since. The pyrotechnic display at night is awe-inspiring and during the day there’s the opportunity to take a 4WD journey virtually to the rim of the world’s most accessible active volcano to view the spectacular ongoing eruptions. The ancient caves in Tanna are also something not to be missed, and people travel from all over the world to explore them. Some blue water caves have snorkel access only and some caves come with their own skeletons. Best to have an experienced guide with you to explain the history and local legends of the caves. Apart from being one of the productive islands in Vanuatu, Tanna is also one of the most traditional as custom and culture remain extremely important. In fact the island of Tanna is populated almost entirely by Melanesians. Many villages have shunned modern life, preferring to live as their ancestors have for centuries, you will see the locals in sheathes and grass skirts and they live in little thatched huts. Such a special destination, giving visitors a unique opportunity to view an ancient culture and its many colourful ceremonies.

Niue is one of the world’s largest raised coral atolls and is home to around 1600 hospitable residents. There’s no such word as rush-hour on Niue, it’s one of the world’s safest destinations and you don’t need foreign exchange – Niue uses the Kiwi dollar. What many people don’t know is that Niue is far from tiny – it’s over four times the size of Rarotonga. A quarter of the island is clothed in pristine rainforest and almost the entire island is surrounded by 20 to 30 metre cliffs, and dramatic beautiful chasms and coves provide perfect swimming spots. Niue is also honeycombed with some of the South Pacific’s most spectacular and extensive caves. The island is encircled by a 64 kilometre coastal road so bikes are a great way to get around, although you can also hire a car. Diving and snorkelling around Niue’s coast is exceptional, as it's renowned for its water clarity and the richness of its marine life. Swimming with humpback whales during July to September is unforgettable and thanks to Niue’s deep surrounding waters, you can sip a cocktail and marvel at these awesome giants breaching just 50 metres from shore.

If you’re heading to Niue on holiday, chances are you’re the kind of person who appreciates places with a difference, and we’re sure you’ll love this one. Instead of silver sands, you’ll find sea caves, rainforest and mysterious chasms, and a world that centres around the ocean. In fact, ‘Matavai’ means eye on the water (mata - eye, vai - water), and it’s an appropriate name for this wonderful cliff top resort with its sweeping Pacific panorama. Scenic Matavai Resort Niue comprises three properties and has a wide range of room types on offer.
Deluxe Room
Both the 3-star studio apartments and the villa are located a 5 minute drive away from the main resort itself. The studios offer good value for money with magnificent ocean views. There are five duplex units, each divided into two spacious studios. Large private balconies make the most of the views and all rooms are well equipped with a kitchen for self-catering. Other on-site facilities include a freshwater swimming pool, trampoline, a BBQ area and access to a sea-track. The villa is situated adjacent to the studios and this super spacious home away from home offers all sorts of holiday options for families or groups. It has a garden setting, with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, full kitchen plus a BBQ and alfresco dining deck. The 4-star resort offers a choice of a comfortable Ocean room, spacious Superior room or luxurious Deluxe room that all come with private courtyards or balconies, air conditioning and super-sized beds. The newer 12 Deluxe Cliff top rooms are located in a block and feature some subtle differences in style and comfort to the Superior rooms. The resort has spacious multi-level deck areas and luxurious reclining furniture from which to enjoy the panoramic views, dual swimming pools, two bars, one of which is a swim-up bar and an excellent restaurant with live entertainment and cultural shows to keep you entertained. The Pacific’s last kingdom is a paradise for seekers of pure peace. There is no shortage of
deserted beaches or pristine anchorages here, and the swimming, snorkelling and diving are exceptional. The main island, Tongatapu, is home to the capital, Nuku’alofa, and to most of the kingdom’s resorts. Many of these are family-owned and personal, because Tonga likes to welcome its visitors in low-key style – this is a place for simpler living and genuine encounters with the local people. With about a third of all Tonga’s population living here, Nuku’alofa can be a surprisingly bustling place with a great array of restaurants, nightclubs and dynamic cultural shows. Tonga’s tropical waters are replete with abundant marine life. Head out to the scenic archipelago of Vava’u and see large schools of humpback whales which come to breed during July to October. It’s even possible to swim with them: a truly unforgettable experience. Vava’u is also a sailor’s dream with beautiful natural harbours and sheltered coves. Even more remote and completely unspoiled is the Ha’apai group, with its coral atolls, glistening lagoons, pure white beaches and just a handful of inhabited islands. The way of life here really is timeless, Ha’apai is ideal for adventure and brilliant for kayaking.

Privacy and peace are paramount here, with fales built as far from one another as possible. They are stylishly furnished, and in true Tongan style have high, cathedral ceilings, thatched walls, big coconut beams and poles and wooden shingle roofs. Each has its own outdoor space, with hammock, beach beds, shady palms, and a bathroom opening out to a secluded flower garden and outdoor shower. Choose between Superior, Deluxe or one of two stunning Honeymoon Fale’s which are situated on one of the island’s most beautiful spots, specially designed for romance. The island itself is 35 minutes by boat from Nuku’alofa, with deserted white sand beaches to explore, peaceful walks to enjoy and excursions available to uninhabited islands. Fafa Island Resort is surrounded by a protected marine reserve and coral reef, enjoy snorkelling straight off the beach at the front of your fale.
