‘‘
Thanks so much
for coming to our school! You really inspired me!
’’
—Elizabeth Kiley, Eighth Grade, All Saints School, kenwood
Thank you notes are a powerful thing. I know this because my 80-year-old mother calls me every time my son sends her one. She is thrilled with the tangible acknowledgment of her gift and seems to love whatever he writes. But I think it’s hard to top what Elizabeth Kiley wrote to our graphic design team after they spoke to her class during a recent career day. Her comment was one among dozens of delightful handwritten notes—some funny, some sweet—filling several hand-drawn cards that were delivered to our office. “You really inspired me!” jumped out at me when I read the notes. I can’t think of any better compliment anyone could have given Nina, Tara and Elvis. So I am going to follow Elizabeth’s lead and thank a few people featured inside this issue who make our hometown a richer, more interesting place to live and no doubt, inspire others to do the same. Thank you Dale Eads for transforming, chemically free, four acres in Loveland into a spectacular park-like setting where garden tour visitors can stroll and ask questions. Thank you Cincinnati Preservation Association for making it your mission to “insure that the best parts of our common past are preserved for the future.” And thanks to the Walnut Hills homeowners who are dedicated to this cause enough to open their doors for the CPA’s historic homes tour in early May. We’re pleased to bring you their stories inside this idea-packed issue because, whether you are an eighth-grade student or a somewhat older homeowner, it is our goal to be your destination for inspiration.

Entry Doors Make Great First Impressions No longer just a way to usher visitors into your home, entry doors now play a major role in any home’s curb appeal. Studies show that strong curb appeal adds approximately six percent to the perceived value of a home. Along with this newfound importance, over the past several years, the average entry door has grown in size by an additional seven square feet. Search: EntryDoors

“ Let no one think that real gardening is a bucolic and meditative occupation. It is an insatiable passion, like everything else to which a man gives his heart.” —Karel Čapek Photo by Dale Eads

A Budding Romancee It’s spring, and one man’s love affair with nature is busting out all over By Nina Kieffer Photos by Ross Van Pelt, except where noted
The rite of spring After the long gray cold spell, we focus gladly on the colors of spring. First, the crocuses push their green leaves up through last year’s mulch. Then, a blush of fuchsia spreads through the trees as the redbuds open. Dogwood petals splash the landscape with bright, hopeful dabs of white and pink. Like a painting in progress, every day brings more hues, more blossoms, more leaves, until suddenly, an explosion of new life surrounds us—and it’s as if winter never happened. Dale Eads’ garden is by his own account a spring garden. It’s at its loveliest April through May. Over time, Dale has put into the earth over a hundred each of dogwoods, redbuds and rhododendrons, over 50 magnolias and over 500 azaleas. He has populated the grounds with 20,000 crocus and daffodil bulbs. As the season gets underway, he plants large swaths of tulips as if they are annuals. Exuberant pinks, purples, reds, yellows, whites and greens drench the surrounding landscape in a spectrum of color.
In an English water garden The park-like yard is a four-acre plot atop a hill. It encompasses deep woodlands, a fern-covered hillside, a hosta-filled ravine and a large expanse of lawn. Walking paths and stairs circumnavigate the yard. The grounds are a combination of formal and informal styles, designed entirely by Dale. There are hardscape features galore: dry stack walls, limestone mosaics mortared with moss, wood and stone steps, brick-paved patios, a stone wishing well. What Dale calls the “crown jewel” of his garden—an iron gazebo supported by near-life-sized caryatids— rests above a stone fountain and pond. Two obelisks mark the entry to the English water garden. continued >

BELOW: Because of their inconsistent blooming performance, Dale plants tulips like annuals. OPPOSITE: The water garden took 2½ years to complete.
Patience, faith, reward Lest you think this faerie land came in on a truck to be installed by hired hands, Dale will tell you differently—when he bought the property in 1993, he fully anticipated that it would be his lifetime labor of love. What inspired him to buy the property was not the house itself, but the regal 70-year-old magnolia tree growing next to it. However, the ramshackle “country Victorian” built in 1876 was the first order of business. Although he was itching to get out in the yard, (a naturalized, wooded setting), he spent the first few years updating the house. continued > Photos this page by Dale Eads

As the owner of Eads Fence Company, Dale frequently runs into opportunities to rescue plants, and building materials. The gazebo is surrounded by 20-year-old boxwood hedges slated for oblivion at a construction site. Once transplanted, they instantly gave the gazebo a mature, established look. A collection of limestone slabs was being unearthed across the street from a job site Dale was fencing in Sparta, Kentucky. The
stones (some weighing several tons) were his for the taking, as long as he could cart them away. He rented special equipment and hauled them to his place. Access to earth moving equipment and the know-how to run it came in handy when he cleaned up the ravine, filling two dumpsters with trash and even an old car! In the process, he discovered the obelisks used in the English water garden buried in the yard. continued >

Spreading the love Dale’s love of plants goes back to his childhood. He was “a little kid who lived in the creeks and ponds.” He became enamored with gardening, oddly enough, while watching Gone with the Wind. The flora of the south, the elegant plantation landscaping, captured his young mind. The horticulture in The Wizard of Oz likewise fueled his imagination. He is inspired by Roberta Paolo, who founded Granny’s Garden School in Loveland. It’s the most comprehensive school garden program in the Midwest. The volunteers who staff the non-profit program are responsible for converting the Loveland elementary school grounds into a veritable Eden. Growing vegetables is part of the school curriculum, and the produce is served in the school cafeteria and donated to the local soup kitchen. Sharing love of gardening with children is important for the future of the planet, says Dale. Gardening at Dale’s house is a family affair. His girlfriend Shawna, and her two children, Stella and Dylan, work side by side with Dale. Shawna cultivates the vege table garden and the kids pitch in, feeding the koi, weeding and tree planting. When the work gets hot, everybody jumps into the “swimming pond” with the koi. Right: Stella with her namesake magnolia, magnolia stellata (star magnolia). Photo by Dale Eads

Most everything in the yard has a story connected to it, and a history to augment the colorful commentary that Dale shares with visitors who come for the numerous garden tours. He is gratified by the appreciation folks have for the results of his passion and hard work. He’s a Cincinnati Horticultural Society award winner, and in 2007, hosted the society’s awards banquet in his garden.
Method to the madness When Dale acquires something for the yard, whether a boulder, a statue or a tree, he doesn’t rush to judgment on its location. He’ll put it where he thinks it might work best, without installing or planting it. continued > LEFT: Carriage house flanked by topiaries is connected to the house by a breezeway. BELOW: Frogs sun themselves on a rock beach. BOTTOM: A lion head spouts water into the koi-filled swimming pond. OPPOSITE: The barn, built of salvaged stone, features a carved sandstone centerpiece, circa 1890, from a brewery in Indiana.
Oh, deer! The property is surrounded by 2,000 feet of deer fence, to keep the persistent critters at bay. Dale is a wellrespected expert on the subject of deer control, and is a guest speaker when time permits. He has established a deer control division in his company, the Eads Fence Company, as he has learned that it’s impossible to have a garden without having deer prevention in place, unless you don’t mind sharing your prized blossoms with the voracious ruminants. Protecting plant life from deer is one of the biggest challenges a suburban gardener faces according to Dale. Photo by Dale Eads

How does your garden grow? In Dale Eads’ garden, chemicals are elementum non grata. Dale is committed to protecting the fauna, including worms and birds, and the soil for future generations. He belongs to an organization called “Plant Geeks United,” whose members are botanists who manage local arboretums. This provides Dale with access to a level of expertise that most gardeners don’t have. He is committed to learning continually, and in the winter season, attends master gardening classes. His guru is Steve Foltz, director of horticulture at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden. Foltz is responsible for conducting plant research and sharing the results. With one of the largest collections of plants in the area under his care, Foltz’s knowledge is unparalleled. Go to plantplaces.com for more information.
He’ll contemplate its position, its relationship to the existing garden elements. If he’s not satisfied, after a few days he’ll move it to another spot. The gazebo was moved all over the yard before its final placement was settled on. Dale is a never-say-never kind of guy. He is a plant collector who loves the challenge of growing difficult species, like Franklin trees and mountain laurel. About one-third of the species in his garden are considered high maintenance, requiring persistence and patience. The results of his diligence are spectacular, and sure to become more so over the years. And, in case you were wondering—yes, he does talk to his plants!

Creme Brulee French Toast Creme Brulee: 2 cups heavy cream ¼ cup sugar Pinch of salt 4 egg yolks 1 teaspoon high-quality pure vanilla extract Lemon zest, optional French Toast: 3 average-size, day-old loaves of plain, round French or Italian bread 3 eggs ½ teaspoon vanilla extract ½ cup half and half cream Butter for griddle Turbinado sugar Pure maple syrup Preheat oven to 300°F. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the cream, sugar, and salt. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally until steam rises. In a bowl, beat the egg yolks and vanilla extract until smooth. Pour the hot cream into yolks, stirring constantly, until blended. Divide this mixture among four 6-ounce ramekins. Place ramekins in baking pan, add boiling water to fill the pan halfway up the sides

of the ramekins. Cover loosely with aluminum foil and bake until custard is set, 25 to 30 minutes. Chill for 2 to 3 hours. Cut bread into 1¾-inch thick slices. Using a serrated knife, cut a deep pocket on the side of each slice but do not cut all the way through. Fill each pocket with as much creme brulee as possible; typically about 1½ to 2 tablespoons. In a shallow dish, whisk together eggs, vanilla, and half and half. Place filled bread pieces in the egg mixture and let stand until the bread is saturated, turning bread to coat all sides. Melt 3 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet or griddle for each serving. Add bread and cook until toast is golden brown on all sides and filling is hot. Sprinkle sugar lightly on top of hot bread and use a kitchen torch to caramelize sugar. Serve immediately with a side of pure maple syrup. Serving size is 2 to 3 pieces. Yields 10 to 15 servings.
Classic Cheese Frittata 2 tablespoons lemon-flavored extravirgin olive oil ½ teaspoon dried minced garlic 4 large eggs, well beaten ½ cup small curd cottage cheese, welldrained Salt and freshly ground black pepper ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese ½ cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese 8-10 fresh whole baby spinach leaves Heat olive oil in 10-inch ovenproof skillet. Add garlic and cook until brown. Combine eggs and cottage cheese, pour into skillet and season with salt and pepper to taste. Cook for about 2 minutes or until center is set. Sprinkle cheeses evenly over top. Broil for 3 to 5 minutes, or until cheeses are melted and eggs are lightly browned (if using a Wolf oven, touch Broil 1 and place skillet on rack 5 under broiler). Sprinkle with spinach, cut frittata into wedges, and serve immediately. Makes 4 servings.
Greek Spinach Mini Quiches 1 tablespoon lemon-flavored olive or grapeseed oil ½ cup chopped yellow onion 5 eggs 2 cups half and half cream 1 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese 1 cup crumbled feta cheese with peppercorns 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese ¼ cup freshly chopped spinach ¼ teaspoon dried oregano leaves Italian parsley leaves Preheat oven to 375°F. Heat oil in 10-inch skillet over medium heat. Add onions and sauté about 3 minutes or until soft. Remove and cool. Lightly grease six to eight 5-ounce ramekins. In a 4-quart bowl, combine eggs, cream, cheeses, spinach and oregano. Stir in onions. Spoon mixture into prepared ramekins. Place in oven with at least 1 inch between dishes. Bake 25 to 30 minutes. When
it was time for one Cincinnati family to decide between moving or remodeling to gain more livable space, they took a look around their home and their neighborhood and decided to stay right where they were.
“We loved our location,” says the home owner. “Our house is perched up in the trees on a wonderful lot, and it is in a great location of the city.” So with this dedication to their space in mind, the busy family began a multi-phase remodel, which eventually included recon figuring the kitchen.
Putting it on paper The homeowner had clear ideas about how she wanted her kitchen to function. She wanted her stove by the oven, because she says there are some dishes she starts on the stove and finishes in the oven. Other priorities for this busy working mom included plenty of storage and a

prep area open to the space so she could help her kids with homework. “I’d torn out pages of magazines for years, so I knew exactly what I wanted,” she says. Before nailing down the specifics of the new culinary space, the couple had already decided, along with their contractor, Designer’s Desk Exteriors, to knock down walls and vault the ceiling. The decision to do away with their formal living room was easy for the homeowners. “Everyone ends up in the kitchen,” she says. At that point, the contractor recommended that kitchen designer George Kinsella, of Kinsella Manufacturing, get involved.
TOP LEFT: Slate in various shades and sizes covers the room’s backsplash area. BOTTOM LEFT: Amber pendant lights glow above the oversized island. TOP: Two tall refrigerators are barely noticeable on what appears to be a wall of cabinets. LEFT: Lighting inside upper cabinets accents their Craftsman-style faces. “I had worked with Designer’s Desk before, and they told the homeowner that she needed to come see me,” Kinsella says. “She had been several places, and she was beginning to get frustrated.” It looks like the advice paid off. “George came back two weeks after we met,” the homeowner says, “and he had my dream kitchen on paper.”
Living lodge The kitchen’s shell doubled in size and now opens into the family room. Kinsella worked with the homeowners to design the spaces to flow nicely. One key element that connects the two rooms is the wall of custom, side-by-side pantries with swingout racks. Not only do these two pantry units provide the homeowners with much-needed storage, they also include a bookcase on the end that serves as an architectural detail in the family room. The bookcase is positioned next to a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace. It was no coincidence that the stone matches that of the stone used above the hood in the kitchen. “The hood was fun,” Kinsella says of their custom-built hood. “We built it to match the cabinets and used the stone to match the fireplace in the family room.” The fireplace is a double unit that also functions in the formal dining room situated conveniently beside the kitchen. A beautiful Native American Zuni bear rug is hung above the fireplace in the family room and draws the eye up to enjoy the height of the new ceilings. This piece of art blends nicely with the lodge-look of the kitchen. “Our home sits in the trees, which inspired the cabinetry,” explains the

homeowner. The cabinetry displays Arts and Crafts lines and glass panes showcase the grid pattern of the trim in the upper row of cabinets.
Sweet success “I love the look of my kitchen, but I also love the way it functions,” says the homeowner. One of the most functional elements of space is the checkmarkshaped center island. The bi-level counter provides an eating area for the family and a homework station for the children, while still maintaining the homeowner’s muchneeded prep area. Under the surface, the island also holds a host of appliances and storage. A wine refrigerator and microwave are located on each side of the island sink, and the end of the island is home to a bookcase where the homeowner keeps her cookbooks. The family is already busy making memories in their new space. “My daughter likes to cook with me, so it’s a family activity,” the homeowner says. “We had a blast at Christmas decorating cookies for our neighbors.” No doubt the neighbors are glad that the family decided to stay put instead of moving.

Upstairs, Downstairs A tour of historic Walnut Hills By Ashleigh Baggett, Cincinnati Preservation Association Photos by Robin Victor Goetz/RVGP, Inc., except where noted One of the earliest settlements of pioneers in Cincinnati, Walnut Hills took its name from the many walnut trees on the site. These 130 acres of hilltop land were originally purchased in 1794 by Reverend James Kemper, a Virginia-born preacher from Kentucky. Reverend Kemper settled here in 1818 and served as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church on McMillan Street until his death in 1834. Another prominent early settler was Dr. Lyman Beecher, the first president of Lane Seminary. He was the father of Harriet Beecher Stowe, whose years in this neighborhood inspired the writing of Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Nicholas Longworth grew grapes on the slopes of the hilltop as early as 1830. The city purchased 156 acres of his land to create Eden Park, which by 1887 included the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Art Academy of Cincinnati. Other notable residents of Walnut Hills included Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes and William Howard Taft, as well as governors, senators, mayors, artists, musicians, poets, writers and leaders in business and culture. Walnut Hills’ superb transit system, which featured horsecars, then cable cars and, finally, electrically-powered streetcars, attracted residential and commercial development in the years after the Civil War. The Peebles Corner shopping area at Gilbert and McMillan thrived because of the transit connections, and grew into the city’s second-largest business district. In 1870 Walnut Hills was annexed by Cincinnati, which quickened the pace of development. Today Walnut HIlls is a neighborhood consisting of residents as diverse in profession as when it began, who are dedicated to preserving the rich architecture of their forefathers. Here is a glimpse of just a few of Walnut Hills’ architectural gems.

This splendid Queen Anne frame residence near Eden Park was the home of dry-goods merchant Henry Pogue of the H. & S. Pogue Company. Originally built around 1865, it was enlarged and remodeled in the late 19th century. It is one of the few Walnut Hills estates that maintains its large lot size as well as architectural integrity. The Pogue Mansion now houses the offices of a landscape architect firm. The carriage house at the rear has been converted into a comfortable and convenient apartment for the owners. CPA was pleased to honor the firm with a Rehabilitation Award in 2009 for this exemplary adaptive renovation.

Constructed in 1928 with what was at the time hi-tech electric elevators and underground parking, the Cooper building was home to elite families who could afford such modern luxuries. The apartments housed many wealthy widows of Hyde Park and Indian Hill businessmen. The apartments were the size of an average house of the time and included servants’ quarters. A 1928 brochure touted the Cooper’s “English tradition wedded to American efficiency...Elizabethan charm and modern aids to comfort.”

Walnut Hills Neighborhood Churches Walnut Hills was once the home of many beautiful small churches. But like many wonderful buildings in Cincinnati, they have become an endangered species. This year, CPA is featuring two of the remaining small neighborhood churches, Church of the Advent and Walnut Hills Baptist Church, in our annual spring tour to give attendees a chance to see these threatened jewels.

Walnut Hills Baptist Church 2386 Kemper Lane—1872 Architect unknown Sponsor: CPA Board of Trustees The Walnut Hills Baptist Church was first established in Walnut Hills in 1872 with 29 members and had flourished by the 1880s. The gothic-style stone church with conical tower was built in 1885 to house the large congregation. Under the inspired ministry of Reverend Dr. Cowley, the Walnut Hills Baptist Church made a commitment to stay in the Walnut Hills community in the 1960s even after their congregation had taken a sharp decline due to the flight to the suburbs. The small congregation made it their mission to try to respond to the needs of the community as it changed around them. The church currently is the meeting place for groups in the community and is looking for every way possible to keep its doors open and to save their beautiful building.
Church of the Advent 2366 Kemper Lane–1866 Architect, William Tinsley Sponsor: Apollo Heating & Cooling This lovely Gothic Revival blue limestone church was constructed on the former site of the Kemper family graveyard after the family remains were transferred to Spring Grove Cemetery. The historic core was designed by architect William Tinsley while his son, the Reverend Peter Tinsley, was rector. The many additions to the original chapel involved the leading local architectural firms of the time. A prominent Boston firm, Warren and Smith, designed the Collegiate Gothic chancel in 1911. Although eclectic in its parts, the whole complex has a sense of unity that emulates English small-town parish churches.

preservation— A part of the solution By Ashleigh Baggett, LEED AP, Program Coordinator, Cincinnati Preservation Association
On people’s minds everywhere today are two related issues: the economic crisis and the energy crisis. Everywhere, businesses and families are being forced to reevaluate their energy consumption and spending habits. Fortunately, preservation is part of the solution to both problems. Recent studies have found that renovating and reusing existing buildings generates more jobs, income and tax revenues than new construction, with less impact on the environment and without a significant increase in cost to the owner.
•
The Cincinnati Preservation Association (CPA) is committed to spreading the word that preservation needs to be part of the solution to the economic and energy crisis in Greater Cincinnati. Using calculated data, the groundbreaking Over-the-Rhine Green/ Historic Study by the Over-theRhine Foundation in which CPA participated, proved that not only is it possible for a historic structure to be as energy efficient as new construction, but that historic buildings are inherently energy efficient. Historic buildings were built to utilize natural daylight, solar heat gain, and passive cooling through ventilation. The quality of construction of historic buildings reduces the amount and cost of improvements compared to modern construction. Reinvesting in these historic buildings reduces the amount of demolition and construction waste in landfills and lessens the demand on natural resources. Historic buildings also tend to be found in centrally located, dense communities that promote more sustainable lifestyles. Walkable urban neighborhoods are in high demand across the country, as people move back to the urban core. People want to live in vibrant places with character close to work, transit and shops. Historic neighborhoods can offer all these amenities with very little investment. Investing in the city rebuilds the tax base, keeping cities healthy. Preserving historic buildings not only creates an investment opportunity, but also creates more jobs than new construction.
The work that is required to repair historic structures requires more skilled labor that usually pays higher wages than new construction. In Maryland, a recent report by the Abell Foundation showed that over the past 12 years, completed rehabilitations of commercial properties generated $1.74 billion in total economic activity and employed an estimated 15,120 people. Construction labor alone totaled an estimated 9,248 workers. The materials used for rehabilitation are usually found locally, boosting the local economy. Historic preservation has come a long way over the past half-century. Reusing our stock of great old buildings reduces our nation’s energy consumption. Reinvesting in great older neighborhoods reduces urban sprawl. It is an investment in our city and in an area with a growing demand. Cincinnati Preservation Association is committed to this principle and encourages you to visit CPA’s website at www.cincin natipreservation.org to learn more. CPA is the only local nonprofit dedicated solely to the preservation of historic architecture. Being a non-profit, there is a constant need for support. To help CPA to continue to be a proactive force for historic preservation, please phone at 513.721.4506 or visit www.cincinnatipreservation. org to see how you can help us to insure that the best parts of our common past are preserved for the future.

take it UTSIDE Open-air spaces for celebrating an evening with friends or a moment alone By Karen Bradner
As children, we played outside until the street lights came on, stretching our freedom until the last possible moment when our parents called us inside. Now, grown up with homes of our own, we’re still inventing excuses to stay outside. With great skill we have learned to open up our living space with porches, patios and pergolas that allow us to entertain a crowd with a cookout or a party by the pool. Occasionally, we carve out a secluded spot where we can plop on a swing all by ourselves to enjoy some quiet time. F Should you need any more persuasion for living outside the box, here are some of Housetrends’ favorite spaces that celebrate the alfresco lifestyle. continued >

Lighting options to help you make a statement in every room By Christina Kleiner
It is only natural to go above and beyond to create the perfect home for your family. F Whenever you set out to purchase something new for your home, whether it is a dining set or a piece of artwork to hang above the fireplace mantel, you quickly understand just how difficult it is to make the right decision.

3/30/10 9:52:55 AM
But once you do find that perfect picture, and you hang it over the mantel, it doesn’t add anything more to the room if it is not properly lit. Lighting a room properly can be an intimidating task. Do you want track, recessed or pendant lights? What kind of lighting works best in the kitchen? How do you accentuate that prized painting above the fireplace for all to see? We’ll answer these questions, and a few others, as we tour a few common rooms in every house and show you a few options available, so you can light your little piece of the world.
A key ingredient The kitchen might require the widest range of lighting than any other room in the house. Jeff Dross, senior product manager at Kichler Lighting, says you should follow a three layer lighting process in the kitchen. “First is the ambient layer, or general lighting,” he explains. “This can be achieved via recessed can lights, which put an even pool of light across the entire room.” Top left to right: Parker pendant by Jonathan Adler. Task lighting is the second layer. This involves lighting your work stations and countertops. Undercabinet lighting is the most common form, allowing you to see when you’re chopping vegetables on the counter and when you’re sauteing those vegetables on the range. The third layer is accent lighting. While Dross says it may not be necessary, it adds appealing interest to the space. Decorative pendants are a popular and easy choice to
highlight the breakfast nook and island. With the wide range of materials and styles, pendants also provide the perfect opportunity for you to introduce a new color or design to the kitchen. “Accent lighting can be functional too,” Dross adds. “You might not think toe kick lighting is necessary, but you would be surprised by how many homeowners rely on this lighting to serve as the night light in the kitchen.” continued >

3/30/10 9:53:22 AM
Bathed in light Just like the kitchen, the bathroom also requires a mixture of different lighting techniques, with ambient and task lighting being the most important. Dross says installing a vanity light over the mirror is the first mistake most homeowners make. “The light over the top presents glares and shadows. That light hits your eyebrows and nose first, causing shadows,” he explains. “These shadows make it difficult for women to apply makeup and for men to shave.” Dross recommends recessed can lights in the ceiling above the vanity and wall lights on each side of the mirror to provide an even amount of light for all tasks. You might not consider the bathroom to be an ideal place to hang a chandelier, but in a large master bathroom or a room with tall nine-foot ceilings, this light fixture adds a dramatic design touch to the ceiling. Don’t forget to use damp-location recessed lights to brighten an enclosed shower or whirlpool tub. continued >

Accentuate what’s important
Broadway musicals use a spotlight to highlight the star of the show, and you can use a similar lighting technique to highlight prized possessions in your home. Strategically placed recessed downlights can accentuate virtually anything from a painting hanging above the fireplace, to a family portrait on a living room wall, to even a favorite piece of furniture. You can also install mini-cone lights under shelves in a china cabinet or hutch to show off your favorite collectibles.

Risk-takers Lighting experts agree that it is important to take a few risks when it comes to lighting. “A good home is a collection of good lighting,” says Dross. “Think about what makes your home look different, what sets it apart from your neighbors.” By thinking outside the box, you can use lighting as a way to define your own sense of style. Instead of hanging a traditional chandelier over the table in
your formal dining room, consider three matching pendant lights. There are also several linear chandeliers available that will look great hanging above a rectangular dining table. A powder room can become the perfect spot to install an interesting light fixture, such as a colorful, artistic pendant or an elegant ceiling light. A pair of unique wall sconces or table lamps on each side of
the headboard in your bedroom can add a dramatic touch and create enough light to allow you to catch up on a good novel before you turn in for the night. A grand foyer is also the prime location to show off a favorite chandelier to all who enter. “Lighting is the most important, yet often the most overlooked, part of the house,” Dross says. “If you add layers of light to the architecture of your home,

you will effectively define each space and bring dimension, depth and interest to every room. Top left to right: Contemporary chandelier from Hammerton. Amore Eclipse chandelier by Oggetti. Set the mood
If you are hosting an intimate dinner party it makes sense to set the tone with soft, ambient lighting. But on a normal night, when your family sits down for a quick dinner, you might require a brighter atmosphere. This is one of the primary reasons dimmers are becoming commonplace in many homes. Homeowners are looking for ways to create different moods, enhance the decor of a room, and save money. Rotary, slide, and touch dimmers are the most common controls, but many homeowners are opting to install integrated lighting systems. These systems connect all of the light fixtures throughout a home. Homeowners can then create several preset lighting settings in one room. With the touch of a button from a wall-mounted box or a remote control, they can select a predetermined lighting scene. It’s important to note that by dimming one light 10%, you are cutting your electricity usage by 10%, ultimately lowering your electric bill.

Show up most any Saturday morning at any antique mall or outdoor flea market and chances are likely you’ll find yourself in the company of old men in hats, middle-aged girlfriends in groups of three, and young couples with children in wagons, all leisurely wandering about the place as though they aren’t quite sure why they’re there.
But appearances can be deceiving. Every one of those people knows exactly what they are doing. They are there looking for the “find.” They usually aren’t in any hurry and sometimes they don’t know what the find is until they find it, but once they set their sight on it, they know it belongs with them. The prize is something different for each of them—it might be a few pieces of railroad china for one, an art deco brooch for another. Shoppers with a little more cash in their pockets may be thrilled to discover the early 19th century walnut corner cupboard, a mid-century modern Eames lounge chair, or a study from the sketchbook of a famous artist. Even the toddler in the wagon is delighted to discover the ice cream sold by the vendor in the far corner. While these weekend shoppers can often be passionate about their purchases, it’s the thrill of the hunt that usually lures them out and keeps them coming back. It’s the conversations they start by picking up a favorite childhood toy or Aunt Clara’s stainless steel penguin ice bucket; the laughs they get at seeing prom dresses from the sixties; and the unhurried pace they set while strolling through the vendor stalls that makes the sum of the day much bigger than the purchased parts. “Decorating with thrift home furnishings is an exercise in shopping with an open mind and bringing the past fastforward into the present,” says Stan Williams, author of The Find: The Housing Works Book of Decorating with Thrift Shop Treasures, Flea Market Objects, and Vintage Details. Williams has been searching for the perfect find since the early 70s when he would spend his Thursday mornings during the summer tagging along with his mother and aunt while they scoured garage sales as “early birds” ready to snatch up a good deal at 7 a.m. Today, after hundreds of purchases, well over 30 years, and a move

3/30/10 9:14:32 AM
HOUSETRENDS LIVING WELL GUIDE
to New York City, Williams still relishes the search. “It’s not so much that I had the desire to own each and every one of these items,” he says. “In fact, I wasn’t always attracted to all I stumbled upon. But it was the thrill of touching and experiencing these used goods that never failed to evoke warm memories or charge my imagination.” In his book, Williams, who calls himself “The Elegant Thrifter,” shares tips and photos showing how talented people, many of them interior designers, use their finds to create stunning spaces that stand out.
Before You Go Have the tools ready to help you organize the search for a find of your own: ❚ A good tape measure. Invest in one that measures 8 to10 feet, stretches out and closes with ease, and is convenient to carry. ❚ A camera. A digital photograph, even if on your mobile phone, allows you the luxury of sending off the image to an expert, a friend, or even your own decorator for a bit of advice before you make the purchase. ❚ Dry dust wipes, such as a Swiffer, which just might remove years of grime to reveal a furniture treasure. ❚ A design notebook. Fill it with budgets, wish lists, photos of design inspiration, essential measurements, fabric swatches and important phone numbers for shipping and delivery.

If you are new to the search, the author also shares some helpful tips for getting started. (See Before You Go on page 89). Or if you are ready to dig in and get your hands dirty, Williams shares some wood refinishing basics. (See Into the Wood on page 91). There are also great tips on mixing china patterns for a sensational table setting; using paint to add zip to an old piece of furniture; experimenting with color; and learning when to say no to a bargain or yes to something you love even if you don’t know where you can use it. â?š Soft woods, such as pine, lack the identifying grains of other woods and are prime candidates for sanding and painting. â?š The most common maple variety is straightgrained, extremely durable, and can be painted or refinished. â?š Curly and bird’s-eye maples are hearty as well, but are mostly reserved for decorative pieces. â?š Walnut is the workhorse of woods: it’s sturdy, takes paint well, and can be beautifully stained and finished. â?š Oak is a hard, coarse wood with visible grains. If refinished, it’s often left in its natural color since painting it can result in a rough surface. â?š Cherry, while prized in furniture making, is more fragile, making it prone to dents and scratches. If refinished, its natural color, which deepens with age, is usually preserved. â?š Mahogany is a rare, dark wood that is durable and resists moisture, so it’s ideal to use on yachts or in humid climates. It too is most often refinished in a tone of its natural color.
