a letter from the Housetrends team

Happy Holidays from our family to

yours.

This special issue of Housetrends kicks off another holiday season in which we find our homes filled with festive decorations, an abundance of food, and if we’re lucky, surrounded by the people we love most in the world. Since this is also the time of year when we send photos of our families back and forth to friends, here’s a photo of some of the people who work hard to bring you issues of Housetrends throughout the year. Not everyone is in the photo. One was home with sick children that day, another was on vacation. But for the most part, this is our immediate Housetrends family. The extended family, our equivalent of aunts, uncles and cousins, is listed in the masthead to the right, along with the role they play. We thank you for reading, and we all wish you the very best this holiday season. Sincerely,

Plush bedrooms and baths are perfect for personal pampering By Karen Bradner | Photos by Robin Victor Goetz, RVGP Inc.

If you are someone who has been fortunate enough to enjoy the accommodations of a luxury hotel, you know the selfindulgent thrill of entering a room which offers a liberating amount of space, tasteful design, supreme comfort and convenience, and the added touch of a spa-like bath. F That same sensation was evoked when entering the bedrooms and baths on display at this year’s HOMEARAMA®. Massive master suites were rich with coffered ceilings, seductive sitting areas, fireplaces, luxurious bedding and window treatments. All of these details were pulled together with a skilled designer’s fine touch. Guest rooms were thoughtful and children’s spaces were packed with a personalized punch. Oversized baths beckoned visitors to stay and soak for a while. F We’ve selected some of our favorite spaces to share with you on the following pages. Take a look and pick the room you’d like to call home—even if it’s just for a night or two. continued >

ounter Unique countertop options to add a little spice to your kitchen By Christina Kleiner If you ask a group of cooks what they consider to be the most important element in their kitchen, you’ll probably receive a wide range of answers. Those who love to bake will probably say their oven, while others might say their gas range or warming drawer. More than likely, none of them will mention their countertops. F Unless you are going to prepare dinner on the floor, countertops are a necessity in any kitchen. For the past few years, granite has dominated the kitchen design industry due to its beauty and durability. But in addition to natural stone, there are several other materials available that create unique countertops. continued >

From sidewalk to kitchen Concrete is no longer relegated to the sidewalk or patio. Kitchen designers are getting more requests for concrete countertops from homeowners looking to create a unique, one-of-a-kind design in their kitchens. The countertops are made of a combination of cement, light aggregates and additives such as fiber reinforcement and acrylic. Some type of reinforcement is used such as structural steel, wire mesh or fiberglass for added support. The countertops are either pre-cast in a shop or built on-site. Fabricators who pre-cast take measurements and then pour the concrete into molds in a shop where they can control the conditions. Once the countertops are cured they are then sealed and installed. Fabricators who pour the concrete countertops on-site like to do so because they can form the countertop specifically to the client’s needs. Once the countertops are cured they are polished and then sealed. The type of seal, method and number of coats varies. Some fabricators mix seals into the concrete before it is poured, others apply several coats after the polishing process. Josh Johnson, owner of J. Aaron, a concrete and wood countertop fabricator, says concrete is a great option for people who are having a hard time finding a granite that fits their needs. “Sometimes the kitchen tile, cabinets or flooring dictate what they should use as countertops. While they might love the look of granite, it’s too busy for the kitchen’s design,” he says. Most fabricators agree that the biggest benefit to selecting concrete countertops is the vast custom options available, such as color. “We’ve had customers want the countertops to match their window curtains, a rug or the color of their backsplash tile,” says Lisa Potvin of Tampa Bay, Florida-based Concrete-N-Counters. Besides the color selection, many fabricators say they also add extra materials to the concrete to create a truly custom look. Potvin has added crushed sea shells and recycled glass bottles to the concrete before it is poured. “It allows the customer to use their imagination and create a look that is their own,” she explains. Design options are also virtually limitless. M Concrete Studios in Dayton, Ohio has incorporated integrated sinks, drain boards and custom inlays in its concrete countertops. “We’ve added built-in cutting boards, copper piping, one couple wanted to add the hand and footprints of their four children to the concrete backsplash pieces,” says Zack Mehaffie of M Concrete Studios. “The design options are probably the best part, we’re coming up with new ideas all of the time.”

Caring for concrete isn’t much different than caring for granite. Experts do not recommend cutting on it or setting hot pots or pans directly on to the surface. Just like natural stone, acidic foods such as lemon juice, or wine can stain the concrete if not cleaned up properly.

Heavy metals Stainless steel is one metal that continues to be a hot commodity in the kitchen appliance industry and it is becoming an increasingly popular countertop material. Stainless steel is a good choice for anyone looking to create a contemporary or industrial-looking kitchen. The countertops combine alloy steel, chromium for rust resistance and plywood for strength. Stainless steel is nonporous, resistant to water and heat, doesn’t chip and requires little maintenance. Special finishes can also be used to hide fingerprints and scratches. Installers do not recommend using abrasive cleaners, which can scratch the surface. If you are looking for a metal that has a little more warmth than stainless steel, consider copper. Copper countertops are the perfect complement to both traditional and modern kitchens. Left natural, unsealed copper will change color and develop a beautiful patina over time. Unsealed copper also fights the growth of germs, thanks to its antimicrobial surface. By sealing or regularly polishing copper, it will retain its shiny, new-penny-like salmon color.

Copper is relatively soft, so it is susceptible to denting and scratching. This is often considered an added bonus because these features produce a unique distressed look over time.

Kitchen designers have been installing wood butcher block tops in kitchens for quite some time. Aside from their obvious function as a built-in chopping block or cutting board, wood countertops create a warm and timeless look in both traditional and contemporary kitchens. Hardwoods such as maple and oak are the most often used countertop woods. However, kitchen designers are seeing an increase in the demand for exotic woods, such as wenge and Brazilian cherry. Wood countertops are easy to clean and stains or small scratches can be sanded out. Experts recommend treating the countertops with mineral oil once a month to bring out the rich luster of the wood. Bamboo is also making its way into the kitchen. Experts say bamboo is 16% harder than maple, making it a very sturdy countertop material. However, since it is porous, it is also susceptible to water damage and scratching. Once installed as a countertop, the bamboo is laminated with a food grade adhesive to create a safe environment for food preparation. Bamboo is also considered a renewable resource since it can be sanded and refinished to look like a new countertop. Adding new countertops to your kitchen is a great way to update an outdated space. Your countertops can serve as the focal point of the kitchen, or help set the tone of the entire space. Be sure to select the material that best suits your cooking and design needs. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box, after all, you’ll be using the countertops every day. TOP LEFT: This Sapele Mahogany countertop blends perfectly with the island’s dark cabinet base. LEFT: Bamboo is considered 16% harder than maple, making it a perfect countertop option.

Kitchen designers Take Home Awards

Above left to right: Connie Hampton, Laura Dalzel and Prisbet Yanes

The first-ever kitchen design competition sponsored by the Southern Ohio/ Kentucky Chapter of the National Kitchen and Bath Association, culminated in a gala event in late October where the top three winners were announced. Entries were submitted from all parts of the local NKBA chapter’s geographic reach, which includes Dayton, Cincinnati and Lexington. Three talented designers took home the honors. In addition to the trophy, the first and second place kitchens won a full-length feature of their project in an upcoming 2010 issue of Housetrends magazine. We’ll highlight their great design tips, showcase the functional aspects, and share with you the judges comments for each of these projects. Contest sponsors Housetrends magazine and Miele USA, along with gala sponsor Feldkamp Enterprises, join together with the local NKBA to congratulate the winners. Watch for more inside these pages soon!

Kitchen Raffle with a Cause In support of its mission to cure pediatric brain cancer, The Cure Starts Now, a Cincinnati-based foundation, recently raffled a chance to win a $25,000 kitchen remodel from RestorAid Remodeling and Restoration. Northern Kentucky resident Thom Kuehneman was the lucky winner and now designs are underway. Look for photos in an upcoming issue of Housetrends. The Cure Starts Now was founded by Brooke and Keith Desserich in honor of their daughter Elena. The couple recently published a book titled Notes Left Behind which chronicles Elena’s struggle with cancer and the inspirational messages and artwork she left behind. www.thecurestartsnow.org.

Great Lifestyles Launch Party Host Thomas Hoskins kicked off Great Lifestyle’s new season on My 64 with an evening devoted to design and technology. At the Bova showroom in Montgomery, New York interior designer Mark Ciolli created two room interiors specifically for the evening: one focused on an urban setting, and another focused on a second home environment. Stan Williams, author of The Find, autographed copies of his new book on decorating with thrift shop treasures and flea market objects. Representatives from Widmer’s were on hand with tips on how to care for your home’s fabrics and finishes. Another great example of design, Mini Coopers from Cincinnati Mini, were on display in all colors and styles. www.greatlifestylestoday.com.

Christmas Antique items rekindle memories of holidays past By Sarah J. Dills | Photos by Robin Victor Goetz, RVGP Inc.

Stepping over the threshold into Beth and Jay Karp’s Indian Hill home during the month of December is like traveling back in time to a warm, childhood memory of Christmas. Every year the Karps’ impeccably decorated home is transformed into an equally elegant land of magic in honor of Beth’s most beloved holiday. “Christmas has always been my favorite time of year,” Beth explains as she points out the dozens of purposefully arranged displays throughout her home. Snow babies ride their sleds down a make-believe mountain and fly high above a forest of glass evergreens displayed on the dining room table while an army of belsnickle figurines keeps watch over the kitchen hearth. F Not only are these Christmas treasures sure to bring out the child in the oldest of visitors, but they also combine to make one of the most spectacular collections of antique Christmas memorabilia in the area. continued >

The holiday glow Beth is part of a small community of collectors known as The Golden Glow of Christmas Past. “Everyone knows everyone,” Beth says of the club. Steve Wilt, the current chair of the Golden Glow, says there are approximately 1,200 members. Wilt knows some clubs and organizations are having a tough time right now with the economy, but he says the Golden Glow has been fortunate to continue to grow every year. “Members find out about us a variety of ways, but the largest recruitment happens at shows and sales,” Wilt explains. “Collectors talk.” The Golden Glow keeps in touch with their members through a newsletter and their website. Each year they hold a convention where members can gather to discuss their passion for antique Christmas items. They also hold events where they display their treasures. This year, the Golden Glow is excited to bring their exhibit to Cincinnati. The Antique Christmas at the Taft Museum of Art will be held Nov. 27–Jan. 10. Vintage Christmas items will be displayed from area Golden Glow members. The antiques will be from the period when the former Taft house was inhabited (1820-1931). Wilt gets more excited about the mission of the Golden Glow as he speaks of their upcoming events. “It is so fun to witness someone getting bit by the bug,” he explains. “People always remember something special about Christmas.”

Dabbling in dolls Beth says it is difficult to pinpoint exactly when or how her Christmas collection began because she has been collecting for years. “I guess it started with my doll collection,” Beth says. “The Christmas collection was an extension of that, because the snow babies are little dolls.” The snow babies in Beth’s collection are from the early 1900s. Beth explains that they began as cake decorations, so she has creatively displayed them to resemble a tiered cake. From snow babies, Beth’s collection expanded to include other dolls and figurines from the holiday genre including nodders and belsnickles. Nodders are figures of Santas and animals with heads that bob up and down, and belsnickles are paper maché Santas used as candy containers. They were both made in Germany from the late 1800s into the turn of the century. continued > TOP ROW LEFT TO RIGHT: Snow babies are on a three-level display. The individual figurines were originally cake decorations. Belsnickle figurines are arranged by size in this display on the mantle over the hearth in the kitchen. BOTTOM ROW LEFT TO RIGHT: This belsnickle is quite old and made of chalk. Feather trees are the perfect backdrop for the homeowner’s cherished treasures. The entire collection was sparked by Beth’s passion for dolls.

Beth (pictured above with husband Jay) has grouped all of her patriotic items together to create an American display on the piano in her formal living room.

Feather trees were also imported from Germany, and Beth’s house is full of them. From the patriotic ornaments hanging from the branches of the small feather tree on the piano to the spun cotton ornaments on the two larger feather trees in the hallway, they can be found in almost every size.

Trimming the feather tree Kugels are glass ornaments that are also found in abundance in Beth’s collection. She says she likes collecting kugels because they are very heavy and hard to break. While they come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors—a large part of Beth’s collection isn’t found on the branches of the delicate feather trees. One massive, green kugel makes a bold statement hung from the chandelier over the dining room table. Underneath rests a serving tray overflowing with smaller kugels in a variety of shapes and colors. Beth explains that silver, gold and green are the most common colors while round is the most common shape. They also come in blue, red and pink in the shapes of eggs and grape clusters. These kugels are most sought after due to their rarity. While the ornaments might seem like the most important element of the Christmas tree today, Beth explains that the putz scene—or life-like display underneath the tree—was equally important a hundred years ago. People would decorate below their tree with fencing and farm animals. Beth tries to keep her displays in keeping with the time, so she enjoys setting putz scenes below or around her trees.

Stamp of approval Although Beth works extremely hard to maintain historical character in the two or three weeks it takes her to set up her displays, she allows herself to mix-and-match pieces of her collection from different origins and time periods. “I’m okay with mixing my pieces as long as it looks appropriate,” Beth says. She creates a unique look that is all her own by displaying items in unique locations or arrangements. Sheep figurines make a statement when displayed in a row in front of a Christmas scene of Santa Clauses and feather trees. Beth’s favorite piece, a Santa Claus with cotton reindeer, is displayed on the roof of one of her dollhouses as if Santa has just landed on the roof to leave a sleigh full of toys for some lucky little boy or girl before riding off into the night saying, “Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.” Editor’s note: During warmer months Beth works in her spectacular gardens, which were featured in the August issue of Housetrends.

“The biggest decision of my life and they made it easy.”

“When looking for an engagement ring for my girlfriend Becca, I wanted a diamond ring

as beautiful as she is, but like most guys it was the biggest purchase of my life and I was terrified and skeptical on who to trust. I was in the process of moving from Chicago to Cincinnati and visited jewelers in both cities for the right ring to fit my budget. I also looked on the internet. Then I found Diamonds Rock. Not only were the price and quality better than any place but, unlike other stores the staff was so confident in their product they actually encouraged me to continue to shop around! I left the store impressed, and true to their word I couldn’t find it better any place else. The team at Diamonds Rock worked with me to build a custom ring that not only fit her hand but fit my budget. Well, she said YES, and we returned to Diamonds Rock for our wedding bands, too. At Diamonds Rock, they just do it better than any place else. (To see Becca’s ring, visit mydiamondsrock.com)
