Seeing a design element that’s wild and imaginative in a home always makes me smile. Homeowners and designers who take a chance and try something completely out of the norm are a big part of what makes creating and reading Housetrends an adventure. This outdoor living issue features several incredibly creative outdoor spaces. Gone are the nail stained decks and grills on wobbly wheels. They’ve been replaced with natural stone landings and landscaped paver walkways that create a backyard retreat for warm summer evenings. Built-in grills and refrigerators allow all the comforts of a kitchen in a setting under the stars. In my twelve years of producing this magazine, I’ve seen some gorgeous landscape projects. I now have a new favorite, it starts on page 18. This Worthington family set out to create a tranquil retreat in their back yard and the result will have you taking a deep breath and feeling centered when you peel through our pages. It’s always a privilege to experience a home where a vision is captured. Enjoy this issue and support our advertisers if you are able. We take great pride in our advertising partnerships. Next month, keep an eye out for our annual kitchen and bath issue—it will be packed with outstanding projects we’ve unearthed right here in Central Ohio.

cal quality that creates an inner hush, punctuated only by the deep sigh brought about by total relaxation. Such is the unique outdoor space enjoyed by a Worthington family, whose Asian retreat was inspired by visits to botanical gardens around the world. As a result of the homeowners’ enjoyment of their forays several years ago, they were certain that the nearly one-acre back yard of their 1950s era home would prove to be the perfect setting for a peaceful retreat. “My husband has always been drawn to Japanese serenity and wanted to create something that would be authentic, but that would also be doable here in central Ohio, where the climate is very different from that of Japan,” the Worthington resident recalls about the project they began nine years ago. Realizing the enormity of the task, the couple called upon Edsall & Associates, LLC, a Columbus landscape architecture firm that designed the outdoor space of their previous residence.

After describing the elements they felt were essential to a Japanese garden, including a ceremonial Tea House, Torii gate and arched bridge, the couple relinquished the reins. The result is a tranquil garden that is restful not only on one’s eyes, but on one’s spirit as well. “The homeowners created a retreat that invites you in. You can’t help but feel the tranquility of this space,” says David Peabody of Peabody Landscape Group, who was responsible for the hardscapes and plantings. Peabody and his team planted hundreds of individual varieties of plant material, including more than 30 species of hosta alone. These combine with custom designed and professionally installed landscape and hardscape features to transform what had been a common lawn into a whimsical, yet accurate representation of a tranquil Asian retreat. “Although homeowners are generally aware of the need for a boundary survey before beginning an outdoor project, not many know that a topographic survey is essential to the success of the project,” says Deborah Edsall, ASLA, who is a landscape architect and managing director of Edsall & Associates. She explains that a survey of the property’s topography is money well spent because it reveals important details, such as elevation, grading, drainage issues and location of utilities, as well as appropriateness of certain plant materials.

OPPOSITE: The designers created a streamcourse feature to provide the musical sound of falling water throughout the season. MIDDLE: The sounds resonating from the stone stream are enjoyed by Tea House guests. BOTTOM LEFT: A magical view of the bridge from inside the Tea House.

Editor’s note: After the recent series of tragic events in Japan, Anne Brown, the public information officer for the city of Worthington reports that residents of Sayama are safe and their community did not suffer any major damage. However, the earthquake did impact their lives significantly. Transportation, power, phone lines and food supplies are disrupted and they naturally are deeply concerned about the damaged nuclear facilities and saddened for the thousands who have died in their country. Visit www.worthington.org/events/ index.cfm for more information.

OPPOSITE: A Kotoji lantern is the focal point among plantings that feature more than 150 separate varieties, including Hosta, hydrangea, iris and azalea.

“Because our client’s property is bisected at the north end by Tucker Creek, we knew we had to develop an idea that would creatively address this issue,” Edsall notes. “Although this was obviously the ideal location for the arched bridge our clients requested, we knew from the history of the area that many of their neighbors’ bridges had been washed away by storm waters in the past— we did not want that to happen here,” she adds. The resulting bridge, reminiscent of that in Monet’s famous paintings of his garden at Giverny, gracefully— and safely—spans the creek bed, which has been lined with Holey Boulders, specialty limestone rocks that are both attractive and ideal for securing the banks of moving waters. “The homeowner and her husband particularly enjoy relaxing in the Tea House, which features sliding panels constructed of carved cedar to resemble modular shoji screens, traditionally made with paper and bamboo—materials that would not do well in Ohio’s climate,” Edsall notes. Visitors from Worthington’s sister city, Sayama, Japan were impressed with the authenticity of the Tea House, as were members of the Worthington Historical Society, who highlighted the garden in its Home and Garden Tour, including featuring a traditional Tea Ceremony. “We look forward every year to the return of good weather when we can again enjoy the tranquility of our beautiful garden as we listen to the water and wildlife,” the homeowner adds.

Cooking

Outside Is So IN! By Karen Bradner

Something magical happens when you cook food outside. Nothing illustrates that point more than the “Hobo Dinner” many of us prepared as children during summer camps or scout outings.

We chopped our

potatoes, place them in the middle of a square of aluminum foil. We threw in some ground beef, a bit of ketchup, a sliced carrot if someone other than kids were in charge, and perhaps added a bit of onion, salt and pepper. After sealing all the ingredients tightly in the foil, we threw the whole contraption on an open fire.

After waiting patiently for several minutes, we pulled the charred foil out of

the fire and burnt our fingers opening the package to discover the amazing transformation of a few simple ingredients into an incredible feast. It’s easy to get hungry just thinking about it.

Campfire stories “It’s a completely different way of cooking,” says Christine Kaufman, who spent many child-

hood weekends camping and fine dining around a fire. “One of my greatest tricks that I can recall from way back was that I would cut an orange in half, remove the orange sections so that I just had the rind,” she says. “I’d crack an egg inside the rind, place the whole thing on the fire. The rind would burn, but I’d end up with a perfectly poached egg—that maybe had a slight orange taste to it.” It’s memories like this and the desire to create similar experiences for her children that spurred on Christine and her husband Matt’s decision to build an outdoor kitchen in their Dublin back yard with help from the design and construction team at Wood Landscape Services. Although their new gathering spot—with its deluxe grill, pizza oven, lobster boil, refrigerator drawers, sink and more—is generations removed from the tent and fire pit experience of their childhoods, the end result is still the same. “Cooking outside is just a great family thing we do together,” Christine says. The pizza oven is a particular favorite for the couple’s two children, 8-year-old Billy and 10-year-old Maria. Both Matt and Christine love to cook and are thrilled to have their kids join in the fun when the family prepares wood-fired pizzas as often as once a week. High temperatures turn the creations around in as few as 90 seconds.

Thinking outside the box Even though it is technically a pizza oven, the stone structure is much more versatile than even the Kaufmans originally knew. When they purchased the oven from the California based Mugnaini Imports, the company’s founder, Andrea Mugnaini, listed a variety of ways the oven could be used. Both Matt and Christine were intrigued enough to take a trip to Healdsburg, California for a cooking class taught by Mugnaini while the Wood Landscaping team was wrapping up construction. “Andrea realizes that not everyone knows what they are capable of doing with their pizza oven,” says Christine. “It’s much like your regular oven where you cook different things based on the temperature. When the oven is fired to its maximum, the roof temperature is 900 degrees and the floor is 650 degrees.”

Mugnaini taught the couple to cook “on the way up and on the way back down.” This means as the oven fires up to its maximum temperature, which takes about an hour, Matt and Christine prepare toppings for the pizzas—roasting red peppers and asparagus, caramelizing onions and preparing appetizers. The pizzas go in when the heat reaches its peak. Then as the temperature begins its decline, they braise meats, bake their main and side dishes, and sometimes even bake cookies for dessert. With that diversity of purpose in mind, last spring the Kaufmans prepared a filet, roasted potatoes and sauteed green beans for an Easter celebration with their family. “When we sat down to dinner that night, none of us could believe

34 housetrends.com 031-038 nKIT CookingOutside.indd 34

that the meal didn’t come from a restaurant. The wood fire made everything taste incredible,” says Christine.

Come on over! Since its completion in 2008, the Kaufmans have had plenty of fun with their exceptional outdoor space. Whether it’s preparing a quiet meal with their kids or entertaining a group of neighbors with whom they are especially close, the kitchen is fully equipped and stocked and ready to go. Flatware, plates, glasses, knives, and linens are concealed in the weatherproof storage cabinets and things like ketchup, mustard and beverages stay chilled in the refrigerators. Resort-style lights hang over the whole space from the first day of spring to the last day of fall as a visible sign that the Kaufmans’ outdoor kitchen is open for company. “I’d say every other Friday and Saturday night, at least, every one of those barstools has a neighbor sitting in it,” says Christine. And to top it off, the house next door has a fabulous pool for after dinner dips. What lucky neighbors!

Hungry for more? Should you be considering an outdoor kitchen of your own, Russ Faulk, vice president of product development for Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet, suggests two areas to consider before you begin. Make sure you have enough counter space. This is an area which often gets shortchanged in the plans. You need plenty of room around the grill for dishes and serving plates. Faulk recommends you allocate counter space to each of the four functional zones of the kitchen—hot, cold, wet and dry prep. Lighting can be a challenge for year-round grillers

when it often gets dark before they’re ready to cook dinner. Have plenty of lights so that you can see what you are doing well after sunset. And if the appeal of sitting around a warm meal in the cool air with a few friends isn’t enough to inspire you, Faulk suggests that outdoor kitchens are a sound investment—on par with an indoor kitchen remodel when it comes to resale value. Ready to get started? Here are Housetrends’ staff picks for our favorite spots to roast, grill, or sample the fare out in fresh air. continued >

Cotswold C¬arm Historic home is backdrop for eclectic collection By Melanie Circle Brown | Photos by Daniel Feldkamp/Visual Edge Imaging

Each spring the Bexley Home and Garden Tour offers an insider’s view of some of the city’s historic gems. One stop on this year’s tour is the 1921-built Cotswold-style home of Jim Elliott and John Behal. The staid Shakespearean exterior belies a whimsical charm within. Chinese temple guard dogs, an antique French crystal chandelier, African fertility figures, and exotic Guatemalan masks are unexpected treasures waiting inside its doors.

The Merchant of Venice “I guess you could call our style traditional eclectic,” says Jim Elliott, an educational publishing consultant. “We have a number of American, English, and Asian antiques mixed with traditional furniture, but we also have some contemporary art. We’ve traveled in many parts of Europe, especially Italy, where John has family. We have a fairly large collection of Italian pottery,” he says. Their globetrotting also includes China, Japan, India, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, and South Africa. Collecting during their travels is a pastime. “Our house cleaners probably hope we’ll stop traveling, or at least stop buying things when we do,” Jim lightheartedly observes. The sheer number of items in their various collections is impressive, yet the result never is overwhelming. With John’s eye as a professional architect and Jim’s natural design flair, they are seamlessly incorporated throughout—an art in and of itself.

As You Like It The Elliott/Behal home has significant ties to Bexley history. Their home was designed by Robert “Roy” Reeves, the architect of Sessions Village, a Europeanstyle housing development in the Bexley area that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Reeves was also one of the architects, along with O.C. Miller, who designed the Bexley Public Library. “We were attracted to the size, location, and style of this house,” Jim explains. “There are many features and details that make it unique. We also liked the possibilities that we saw for the yard and garden.” The living room has details very typical of Reeves, says Jim: an offset fireplace with a small window to one side, a builtin bookcase, plaster walls, and Delft tile accents. The living room opens onto a sunroom, which was originally covered by an arbor in the days before air conditioning.

OVERLEAF LEFT: Though not original to the home, this chandelier, with its mix of incandescent and candle light, adds drama to formal meals at the dining room table. OVERLEAF RIGHT: Joey, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, sits on a Queen Anne wing chair by Charles Pollock that is covered with Rose Cummings fabric. OPPOSITE: An ottoman by Charles Stewart in Brunschwig & Fils needlepoint fabric sits off center in front of the living room’s off-center fireplace. TOP: Bookshelves in the sunroom house pieces of the homeowners’ art collection, which has a special focus on local artists. ABOVE LEFT: Delft tile, probably original to the home, adds a handsome touch to the fireplace surround. ABOVE RIGHT: Collections are on display throughout the home.

The focal point of the dining room is an imported, turn-of-the-century crystal chandelier. Gold crackle paper by Gramercy covers the ceiling and is complemented by red trellis paper by Nina Campbell on the walls.

All’s Well That Ends Well A previous owner had built an addition, and Jim and John worked within the existing footprint to renovate the kitchen, family room, and master bedroom and bath. John designed the renovation, and his firm, Behal Sampson Dietz, managed the construction. Sally McDonald of InteriorWorks helped with interior design. “We wanted a European-looking kitchen,” Jim notes. They selected D.L. Atkinson cabinets with a waxed-pine finish, ceramic tile backsplash, and Santa Cecilia granite countertops. The focal point is a red cupboard custom-made by Emily and Michael Kincaid of Mt. Vernon, Ohio. In addition, John designed an inset bookcase, trimmed in wrought iron, to hold their large collection of cookbooks. On another wall is a matching wine rack, which, according to Jim, “holds a quickly rotating collection of wine.”

TOP LEFT: Waxed-pine finished wall and island cabinetry along with a large, red-glazed cupboard add visual warmth to the kitchen. TOP RIGHT: Two rush-backed chairs by Baker covered in Kravet fabric, provide seating for casual meals in the kitchen. BOTTOM RIGHT: A large collection of porcelain Chinese temple guard dogs in what is called a “spinach and egg” glaze are displayed in a built-in corner niche in the dining room. OPPOSITE TOP LEFT: Framed mirrors over the sinks in the master bath cleverly conceal practical storage. OPPOSITE TOP RIGHT: Unusual windows add great charm. OPPOSITE BOTTOM: Scalamandré toile paper on the walls and a matching fabric on the duvet cover go far to invite guests to linger in this bedroom.

TOP LEFT: A desk in the master bedroom gets plenty of light from the arched window behind it, as well as French doors just beyond the drapes. TOP RIGHT: This headboard is made from a door imported from India and purchased by Jim and John in Santa Fe from Seret & Sons. The bed is accented by a bedspread and pillows from India. BOTTOM RIGHT: Jim’s family photos find a backdrop in a shirting stripe wallpaper by Picasso.

The mix of old and new is carried through to the bedrooms upstairs as well. Family pieces, such as a German bench belonging to Jim’s great-grandparents, and his father’s boyhood brass bed, are featured in rooms finished with Brunschwig & Fils fabrics, Ralph Lauren wallcoverings and accented with treasures collected on their travels. John and Jim have worked hard to preserve the home’s architectural integrity, such as keeping the original front Dutchdoor and unique upstairs windows, while subtly adding conveniences. In the master

bathroom, medicine cabinets are cleverly hidden behind framed mirrors. A former nursery in the home has been redesigned as a large walk-in closet. Keeping connected to the past is important to both Jim and John. An upstairs wall is accented with another collection, a large gallery of old family photos. “John and I both have wonderful childhood memories of grandparents and other relatives, and having things of theirs in our home helps us keep those memories alive,” says Jim.

Leafy Living By Karen Bradner

Even though it was designed with children in mind, this Bexley treehouse pays a serious amount of respect to Mother Nature too. Its

design and construction was planned out carefully to protect and respect the natural elements that surround its perch. Support piers were dug by hand in order to protect the roots of the trees. Standing over 12 feet above the ground, the watertight structure, with working windows, electricity, a lockable door and cedar-shake roof provides shelter and plenty of resources for fun amidst a solid sprinkling of leaves. A carved eagle perches atop a newel post.

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The next best time is now.

HANGING ARTWORK CORRECTLY One of the most common decorating mistakes is hanging artwork incorrectly. Artwork, whether it be photos, prints, or paintings, looks best at eye level. That means the center of the piece should be at roughly 60 inches. You should adjust according to average heights of your family members. When you are hanging pieces above furniture, allow 4-6 inches between the bottom of the artwork and the surface of the furniture. There should be at least twice as much space between the top of the artwork and the ceiling as there is from the bottom of the artwork to the furniture.

Keep the oven at 400°F. Remove the rolls from the baking sheet and let cool on a wire rack for 5 minutes. Cut each roll in half. Place the rolls, cut side up, onto the baking sheet. Bake for 5 minutes or until the rolls are lightly toasted. Drizzle 1 tablespoon honey over the roll halves. Stir 1 tablespoon orange juice and the mint in a small bowl. Add the strawberries and blueberries and toss to coat. Divide the berry mixture among the rolls. Stir the yogurt, remaining honey and remaining orange juice in a small bowl. Spoon the yogurt mixture over the berry mixture. Serve immediately.

Preheat oven to 350°F. Unroll refrigerated crescent rolls and line a 12-inch pizza pan by pressing out with fingers and sealing seams and edges to cover entire pan.
