a letter from the publishers

This world is but a canvas to our

’’

imaginations. —Henry David Thoreau

The mind truly is a powerful thing. As children we are told that, if you put your mind to it, anything is possible. If this issue proves anything, it’s that whatever you can imagine can be created. Chris Stewart proved this when he set out to create his long-awaited kitchen. With his love of contemporary design at the forefront, he successfully combined a series of elements, from exotic woods and stainless steel to glass tile and bold granite accents, to create a truly one-of-a-kind kitchen. We’re sure you haven’t seen anything like it before. We’re also featuring two spectacular homes in this issue. One offers four floors of living space and an Italian flair. The other boasts a chic interior full of spicy, rich color. Both, however, incorporate some of the most astounding murals we’ve seen in quite some time. In addition to these great features we’re also highlighting a wonderful outdoor living space that combines old-world beliefs with modern day conveniences. You might also notice a few changes to Photo by Joe Traina Housetrends as you peruse the magazine. We’ve pumped up Fresh Finds to showcase even more new products. The two-page section now highlights the latest trends in furniture and flooring. It is our hope that, after seeing the homes featured in this issue, you’ll be encouraged to use your imagination to change the world around you. Sincerely,

Judy and Bob DeLuca and the Housetrends staff

Couple’s renovation results in a happy home By Lyla Haggard | Photos by Joe Traina

Color seems to have a supernatural power to lift spirits, calm nerves and create everything from a peaceful environment to a lively and bold atmosphere. When Nicole DeBartolo and Chad Chronister purchased their South Tampa house they knew they wanted to transform it into a happy and energetic home.

decoratingtrends A chic remodel With views of Tampa Bay on three sides, this 10,000-square-foot house is a stunning illustration of how a change in décor can create an entirely different atmosphere within the home, one suited to the lifestyle of this young couple and their seven-year-old son Asher. The family was living in a lovely traditional brick home on a golf course, but, says Nicole, “That didn’t make sense because neither of us golf. We wanted to be by the water and this house was the perfect location.” They knew, however, that they would have to do a lot of work to convert it into their “happily ever after” home. Nicole called on interior designer George Mazas, of Mazas Design Gallery, to guide her in this renovation, since he had worked on her previous home and with her parents’ home as well. “There was no better choice for us. We knew that George would have no problem making our project perfect. His work just speaks for itself,” she says. In fact, Mazas was an ideal choice because he knew the house very well, having designed the interior for the prior owners. “It was a little unusual, although not the only time I’ve done it, to un-do something I had created for different owners. But this was simply a case of a young couple with different tastes who wanted a completely different feel to their home,” he explains.

Combining color and texture The existing French Baroque décor was ornate, with elaborate fireplaces, columns and moldings. Mazas describes the new décor as soft contemporary, with clean lines, a variety of textures and—most importantly—lots of color. “I wanted the décor to express this couple’s joyful sense of being alive,” he explains. “Nicole was not afraid of using color…fuchsia is a daring, bold choice for even a contemporary home, but it really manifests their energy and zest for life.” Adds Nicole, “We wanted the house to represent where we are in our lives…and that’s happy. It’s a very happy house.” The exuberance of this family is evident upon entering the home. To the right of the foyer is the dining room, where brightly upholstered chairs— with an intriguing, herringbone-inspired pattern continued >

decoratingtrends on the backs—introduce the use of fuchsia as an accent color throughout the house. An Italian display cabinet on the far wall and the vibrant “Exotica” painting, by Leila, at the end of the table give a contemporary feel to the room. Dramatic chandeliers give a feel of elegance for more formal entertaining. Most walls in the home were resurfaced with a raked plaster finish containing marble particulate. Several plaster columns were replaced with ones made of wood and mother-of-pearl. Above the curved staircase with a graceful wrought-iron rail leading upstairs, a striking arrangement of seven narrow mother-of-pearl rectangular wall tiles picks up the touch of shimmer in the columns and walls.

Cheerful gathering spaces Straight ahead is a small seating area with water view which was formerly used as a living room. Like many homeowners, Nicole and Chad seldom used this area, preferring the family room instead. Mazas suggested that it be converted into an after-dinner conversation area where guests can enjoy a relaxed coffee or liqueur. The custom designed oak and stainless steel bar is a featured piece in the room; it faces a small settee located under an impressive brushed chrome framed mirror, which reflects the bay view and gives a larger sense of space. Two side chairs, also upholstered in fuchsia, continue the colorful theme. The kitchen, family room and pool area are where the family spends most of its time. Mazas redesigned the area to accommodate the couple’s lifestyle, bringing the outside inside. Floor to ceiling windows and doors bring the pool area and the bay beyond right into the house. “It’s the perfect set up,” says Nicole. “Barstools, seating area, big couch, two flat-screen TVs, and a table that seats eight. It’s our hangout room where we all congregate.”

OPPOSITE: The breakfast area features bench seating that hugs the curved wall. TOP: George Mazas updated the kitchen by adding a new stainless steel hood and contemporary hardware. ABOVE: The combination of yellow, brown and blue tones adds a cheerful touch to the family room.

OPPOSITE: The bathtub encourages relaxation with the added benefit of chromotherapy. TOP: Rich fuchsia bedding sets the tone in the master bedroom. ABOVE: The pirate ship bed is surrounded by an ocean-themed mural.

“Neither of us cooks, but we now entertain a lot,” notes Nicole. “The double SubZero refrigerator and large Viking range are perfect for parties.” For the kitchen, Nicole also chose a Dacor dishwasher, two additional refrigerator drawers, and a Sharp microwave drawer. Mazas was able to keep the cabinetry intact, updating it with more contemporary hardware. A new brushed stainless steel hood above the range has clean lines and a more modern shape. Columns made of coconut shell, a backsplash of soft aqua glass tiles and a giant salt water aquarium give the feel of Florida life. Mazas found the master suite to be his greatest challenge. Formerly dark in tone, it now has a serene, almost Zen-like feel. The master bedroom has water views on three sides, with motorized window treatments that control the Lutron blackout shades (which were also installed throughout the rest of the house) for restful afternoon naps when desired. A spacious tworoom his-and-her closet accommodates all Nicole’s needs. “Finally, a perfect closet for both of us. Everything is laid out just right, and I don’t have to steal space from Chad,” she laughs. The master bath was completely redone to create an in-home spa. The shower has walls textured with contrasting milk glass and slate tiles and features rainhead shower heads, body sprays for pressure points, steam, speakers for music and a deep bench on which to sit. An electric window fogs up immediately to insure privacy. The spa tub not only has the typical water jets but is also installed with a system of colorful LED lights that can be adjusted for chromotherapy treatments in which the color of the water changes to suit the bather’s mood, with Asher pointing out his favorite is blue. A fireplace at the foot of the tub adds to the atmosphere of this truly unique experience. continued >

decoratingtrends Fantasy comes to life A completely different environment was created for Asher’s bedroom by Tampa artist Jason Hulfish, who specializes in fantasythemed children’s rooms. “I love to design a room the way a kid would want it, not as a parent or adult would,” Jason explains. “I just think BIG—not small and cutesy—and kids love it!” There’s no doubt that this pirate’s den is designed for an imaginative boy. Asher has a thing for pirates, dragons and fish, so Hulfish painted walls and ceiling as though underwater, with giant shark and other fish swimming around a custom-built pirate ship/bed. “I built this bed to be safe and functional but also to look cool,” he says. The project was challenging, not just to build but to design in such a way that it could be taken apart to get it up the stairs, through the 30-inch doorway (the narrowest in the house) and then reassembled in the room. At the foot of the bed, the dragon, which weighs about 60 pounds, is made of eight pieces of wood laminated together and then hand sculpted. Hulfish points out that, “Kids may not remember a lot of things, but they always remember the house they grew up in. I want my clients’ children to have the kind of room where all their friends like to come over and hang out.”

Joyful surroundings The remainder of the residence also includes several guest bedrooms, a playroom, media room, long veranda and outside kitchen poolside. Mazas encourages homeowners to consider a new look for their homes. The important thing is to find an experienced designer who can guide owners in the myriad of decisions that arise. “Nicole was an ideal client. She’s not only intelligent and artistic, she knows what she wants. That makes it easier for us to work together,” he says. “It also helped that she is so gracious and full of joy.”

Thick

and hearty Flavorful one-pot meals chase away the winter blues By Christina Kleiner

Even though Florida isn’t known to see blistering cold temperatures, we still experience the occasional cold snap. During those times, there’s nothing quite like a hearty bowl of soup or a crock of chili to take the chill out of the air. continued >

Pinellas County home draws its design inspiration from across the pond By Amy Diehl Photos by Dennis Eckel and CEA Marketing Group (except where noted)

The

house that almost “never was,” ulti-

mately became the house that “has it all.” These Pinellas County homeowners had originally planned to rebuild on an existing property they owned not far from their current home. When a friend offered to sell them this 4-acre waterfront plot, they initially turned him down…several times. It wasn’t until they finally saw “the most beautiful lot on the Intercoastal Waterway” that they changed their minds. What arose as a result of that decision was a magnificent waterfront estate that they will call home for the rest of their lives.

shade the long curving

drive to the home where a massive Italian fountain highlights the grand portico entrance. Tall stucco walls and terra cotta roof tiles combine with oldworld arches and wrought iron scrollwork to set the tone. At night, with the fountain lights on and the water flowing, the house is reminiscent of an Italian village square. European influences abound Italy is a favorite country of these homeowners and the source of inspiration for the home and its interiors. From the structural elements to the classic trompe l’oeil, art finishes and murals on the walls and ceilings, its influence is everywhere. Despite the old-world design, as a new waterfront home, this project had to conform to modern day building codes. Since the ground floor could not have any permanent living space aside from the entrance foyer, this area was used to create a shady outdoor living space for both adults and grandchildren. Below the high vaulted ceilings, a serene outdoor chapel and meditation garden overlook the nearby pond. Directly adjacent, an outdoor play yard complete with full jungle gym and nearby putting green amuses kids of all ages. Murals of the Italian countryside grace the high walls of this space. continued >

Built by Dan Karcher Construction, this home was nearly three years in the making. “It took 8 months of planning and was 27 months under construction,” Karcher says. This is the second home he has built for this client. “The first was over 30 years ago and we’re still friends,” he says. The homeowner adds with a laugh, “It must have gone pretty well, because we’re still talking to our builder and not everyone has that kind of result.” The house plans were designed for the owner’s original site and had to be modified to meet the new land specs. “This house started out a third smaller than it is now. Then we found out we had a lot more land to play with, and we decided to build something larger,” the homeowner says. The architect, Robert Hermann, was also a longtime associate of both Karcher and the homeowner. Though he had moved away several years ago, he took on this project and flew in regularly as it progressed from plans to reality. In addition to architectural design, Hermann worked extensively on the interior including picking color palettes, creating a furniture plan and ordering all the furniture, selecting tiles and more. He worked in close collaboration with interior designer Nancy Phillips, who chose fabrics, designed all the window treatments, selected rugs and accessories and pulled all the pieces together.

Dedicated spaces This home is divided into public space and private, family spaces. The owners entertain frequently and often host large charity functions in their home. For this reason, the second floor works beautifully as the public area of the home. Featuring a formal living room, dramatic formal dining room, a cozy library and full catering kitchen, this floor of the home is ideally suited to entertaining. It even includes a set of twin bathrooms to handle a large volume of guests, plus a separate guest suite. Also on the second floor is the office, designed with space for both husband and wife to work, which includes a display area for University of Florida Gators autographed memorabilia, the wife’s beloved alma mater. Polished floors of Jerusalem limestone tie the vast space together. The third level is the family floor. Nearly all the rooms on this floor open out to the elegant, negative edge pool and surrounding balconies overlooking the glittering Intercoastal Waterway. A major feat of engineering, this pool allows swimmers to soak or sunbathe while admiring the lofty views. Shellstone tile, a natural imported product from Mexico, was used for all of the outdoor flooring on this level. A large covered outdoor kitchen on the balcony is a favorite gathering place for the son-in-laws and other family members to hang out and grill. continued >

The family area includes a spacious dining room and breakfast nook, comfortable family room and handsome kitchen plus a beautifully decorated kids’ playroom, complete with little chairs embroidered with the name of each grandchild. The side wing of this floor features a home gym and the “man cave.” “Welcome to my kingdom,” the homeowner jokes. “This is my favorite room in the house.”

It is easy to see why. A nautical theme predominates with handpainted, “antique” charts and maps on the walls above the rich, dark wood wainscoting. The fourth level houses the wife’s favorite room in the house: the master bedroom. “The master bedroom is serene and relaxing but also elegant,” she says. Decorated in a French country style, full length windows incorporate the beauty of the water view while inside a comfortable seating area is a fun place to read to the grandchildren. The painted ceiling features a mural of three cherubs painted from baby pictures of the couple’s grown daughters. The walls glow in a soft warm peach color of Venetian plaster. As with any construction project however, there are always glitches. “The original color we chose was so ugly!” the husband says. “It looked great on the color board. But once it was up—no way.” It took three tries to find the right hue, but it was worth the effort. continued >

Completing the master suite are matching dressing rooms and a spacious bathroom featuring separate his and her vanity areas, a Kohler whirlpool tub and a large, walk-in shower corridor with multiple shower heads specifically designed with the future in mind. It is set up for wheelchair access should the need arise.

The bathroom also has special features like heated floors and hidden television screens behind the vanity mirrors and a full laundry room that connects to the main hall.

home have been either given textured finishes or hand-painted with murals and trompe l’oeil painting by the artists of Art Inherited. A dramatic element of the family level is the colorful barrel vaulted ceilings that are a focal point in this area. The painting, a jewel toned piece depicting various architectural elements, flows

throughout the space from one recessed vault to another. “This ceiling was a real challenge. They are all separate spaces but the architect wanted it to look like one continuous picture,” says DJ Stevens of Art Inherited. The design work for these paintings took Stevens a year in planning and her sisters Carol and Caren eight

months to complete. A lot of thought went into creating pieces that worked together but did not all look the same. “The most exciting moment for me personally was when I could stand in one spot and see all the pieces in the different parts of the house starting to flow together,” she adds. continued >

The formal dining room, for example, features a vast, hand-painted groin vaulted ceiling designed to look like a Tuscan village. “Unbeknownst to us, the artists put one house that looks just like ours in the design,” the owner says. “And, if you look closely, you can see that in the paint they recreated the tapestry effect from the material used on dining room chairs.” Another favorite painting is in one of the many bathrooms. “We wanted to use the Gator colors somehow but not have it look chintzy. DJ came up with the idea of doing a ‘sophisticated swamp’ with an alligator in it. We joked about having the alligator eating a Seminole, and next thing you know, we see a Seminole feather hanging out of his mouth,” the wife says with a laugh.

A major architectural element used to define the rooms was the treatment of the ceilings. Every room has some unique element. “The architect is definitely a ceiling guy,” Karcher chuckles. From groin vaulted ceilings and barrel vaulted ceilings to recessed domes and more, these handsome designs, each hand-painted with unique paintings or finishes, really help to define each space.

Plucked the Past from

Homeowner takes a look back as she plans for the future

By Amy Diehl | Photos by Johan Roetz

Thick stone walls, a massive fireplace and a rafter beam ceiling open to the sky define the space of this “Farmhouse ruin” situated on one corner of this restful lakefront property. The Ruin, as it’s called, was artfully designed to look like the remains of an ancient, tumbled-down stone farmhouse. It is actually a modern creation fully engineered, elegantly designed and perfectly set up for relaxing while enveloped in a sense of history. F Brian Schatz, of Schatz Landscape Design, worked with the homeowner to create a complete property design for her new home. In addition to handling practical issues such as site design, low maintenance plantings, dealing with invasive species and the like, she had a very specific request. “She showed me a picture she had pulled out of a magazine and asked me if I could do something like it,” Schatz says.

A design for the times The Ruin features blue-stone flagstone floors and quartzite stone walls on two sides with a large stone fireplace as the focal point. Stone columns, slightly irregular so as to appear tumbled with age, help define the open walls. Instead of a roof, thick cedar rafters open to the sky delineating the space. Eventually, lush wisteria vines will scramble over the top adding a sense of permanence to the site. Unique furnishings and accessories, mostly chosen by the homeowner, show exquisite attention to detail including a stone sink with copper piping and an old style faucet highlighting one corner. Antique Spanish doors painted a faded blue that the owner had found while traveling create a beautiful entry point with a whiff of the exotic. An antique, hand carved, wooden window lattice further adds a sense of history. Running along one side of the property, a meandering dry creek visually separates the ruin from the rest of the property with accessibility via a small Ipe wood bridge on one side and large stepping stones set “midstream at one end. While the creek bed is only a true watercourse during heavy rainstorms, it serves two functions: physically, it channels water away from the home and back to the lake and visually, it creates a lovely, meandering streambed that draws the eye down to the Ruin and the lake beyond. Rain chains, an attractive alternative to gutters, hang from the corners of the home to funnel water off the roof and down to the creek bed. continued >

At peace with nature The homeowner says she wanted to create a more natural setting on her property, which is Schatz’s specialty and passion. Within this property, low maintenance planting and meandering paths encourage guests to wander, never knowing when a fun sculpture or interesting accent piece will grab their attention. The tall cut off trunk of a dead tree, known as a “snag”, was left in place near the Ruin as a habitat and food source for the local wildlife. A potted herb garden with a drip irrigation system is sited close to the kitchen and a butterfly garden is centrally located in a full sun location. continued > LEFT AND BELOW: A large stone fireplace serves as the focal point.

1/26/11 8:08:03 AM

Elsewhere on the property, a large grove of invasive Melaleuca trees was removed and replaced with indigenous plantings. While it was initially traumatic to lose the privacy screening these trees provided, both designer and client knew these were not an ecofriendly choice. Now that the replacement grove of Florida native wetland trees and shrubs has grown in, the space abounds with small birds flitting from tree to tree. Nearby, a small grouping of citrus trees, carefully chosen from disease resistant stock has been planted. This property is a marvelous combination of practical, low maintenance planting with innovative design, fun artistic elements and a dramatic, eye-catching feature. The result, as the homeowner says, “is delightful.

“Yes, you can have a beautiful home built without the drama! Javic Homes’ main appeal is they build great homes, but they also communicate with you at every stage of the house planning/ house building process. Everyone at Javic was a real pleasure to work with and always just a phone call or email away. Not only were they very professional - returning calls and emails, answering all of our questions and addressing any concerns in a very timely manner - but they really took the time to make sure we understood the process of building a house and most importantly - they made it easy, enjoyable, and drama free!! That is quite an accomplishment! We were so pleased with Javic and how they built our home that we begged them to build our new office.” - Andrew Shein & Tien Tien

Ceiling Fans

You’ve come a long way, baby!

By Kelly Z. Clark Let’s be honest, ceiling fans have often posed a dilemma for those who want to be both style-conscious and practical in their homes. With a reputation for being unattractive and unsophisticated, yet highly practical and energy efficient, ceiling fans might be necessary but they don’t often get a lot of style points. Don’t sweat it, though, because the winds of change have blown in new ceiling fan styles that are worthy of being the focal point of any room.

It all started when… The first ceiling fans in the U.S. were introduced in the 1860s and ran on a system of running water with a turbine. A few of these are still in use in the southern United States in restaurants and commercial buildings. Then in 1882 the first electric-powered fans were made from motors adapted from Singer sewing machines. By World War I, most ceiling fans were manufactured with four blades instead of the original two. Besides making fans quieter, this change allowed them to circulate more air, thereby making more efficient use of their motors. By the 1920s, ceiling fans had become commonplace in the United States, and had started to take hold internationally; however, during the Great Depression, ceiling fans were out of vogue in the U.S., and by the end of World War II ceiling fans had become almost non-existent, and remained that way into the 1950s. In the 1960s, some East Asian manufacturers started exporting their ceiling fans to the United States. They caught on slowly at first, and although they lacked style they found great success during the energy crisis of the late 1970s, since ceiling fans consume far less energy than air conditioning units. The rest is history, as they say, and you can see the entire history of ceiling fans and desk fans at the American Fan Collectors Association Museum. The museum is located at the Fanimation Company’s facility in Zionsville, Indiana,

and contains more than 450 antique ceiling and desk fans from over 140 manufacturers.

Styles that will blow you away Today, manufacturers are proving that the sky is the limit when it comes to high style in ceiling fans. The San Francisco ceiling fan by Minka Aire, characterized by the simplicity of its bold, clean lines, was the winner of design awards from the Chicago Athanaeum Museum of Architecture and the International Interior Design Association. The Artemis ceiling fan, which is available in nine colors, also makes a striking design statement with graceful and fluid blades that wrap around to form the housing of the fan. According to the Lumens.com Trend Watch, manufacturers are offering fans that are more versatile, accommodate small spaces, and range from two-bladed styles to modern Asian and beach-inspired designs. Colleen McCracken, director of merchandising for Lumens.com says, “We’re seeing a lot of two-bladed fans. They’re as efficient as a 4- or 5-bladed fan, and while it might seem that these are a more contemporary structure for a ceiling fan, they come in a lot of different styles.” For ultimate flexibility, the Multimax fan from Fanimation can be used with or without a light and easily changed from 2, 3 or 4 blades with reversible sides for a choice of finish. continued >

Big what?! For oversized foyers, lofts, conservatories and great rooms, the Isis from Big Ass Fans may be just the right fit. Big Ass Fans is the leading manufacturer of huge ceiling fans for industrial and commercial settings and offers Isis as their residential solution for rooms that need a “serious air moving machine.” The Isis is precision built using industrial components, and boasts a circulation rate equivalent to nine standard ceiling fans that can be felt from floor to ceiling and wall to wall, but at a monthly operating cost of less than pennies per day.

Airing it out Abby Ehling, lighting consultant for Central Light in Cincinnati, says the majority of lighting plans for new homes built in Cincinnati include ceiling fans for the great room and master bedroom. She points to Minka Aire’s 3-blade Concept fan as one of the top choices by her customers for its transitional look and midrange price. For those who want a light kit on their fan, Abby offers this reminder: “The Department of Energy has regulated the wattage allowed on light kits to a maximum of 180 watts. This means that even if you decide to push the limit with higher wattage bulbs, light limiters have been placed on the light kits and automatically shut the light off when it exceeds the 180 watt limit. Some manufacturers are now offering fans with fluorescent lights to provide more lumens.”

Looking good at last It appears that ceiling fans not only have a long history, but they are also here to stay. To that end, manufacturers have gone to great lengths to provide consumers with incredible styles that could literally become the artwork that hangs from the ceiling. With options and styles so numerous, the choices in fans could make your head spin.

While there are so many striking features in the kitchen, none of them are overpowering. The cabinetry sets the overall tone in the space. Chris teamed up with Don Miller, designer at Couture Kitchen and Bath, to select the perfect cabinets. “We talked about the different types of materials available. At first Chris was considering solid wood cabinets, which would have given the kitchen a more rustic feel. But he kept going back to the exotic wood veneers,” Miller says.

Exotic details The perimeter cabinets are a mix of Zebrawood veneers and anodized aluminum frames with frosted glass doors. Miller is quick to point out the grain of the Zebrawood runs horizontal, rather than vertical. “You don’t see this too often, it’s one of my favorite features in this kitchen. The horizontal grain gives it a very unique look,” he adds. The aluminum cabinets include a vertical bi-fold lift system, something often seen in restaurant kitchens. Another one of Miller’s favorite features, the cabinets help to break up the Zebrawood cabinetry and complement the stainless steel. continued > OVERLEAF: The renovated kitchen features roughly 1,500 square feet and 10-foot ceilings. OPPOSITE: The anodized aluminum and frosted glass cabinets feature a vertical bi-fold lift system. LEFT: The yellowgold and black tones in the Spectrus granite can also be found in the nearby glass tile backsplash. BELOW: Oversized pullout cabinets store the dry goods and eliminate the need for a separate pantry.

You know you have created something impressive when your 8-year-old nephew says your new kitchen should be featured on MTV Cribs. Who knew a boy of that age would have any interest in kitchen design or that he could be impressed by anything related to home improvement? For Chris and Andrea Stewart, this was just one of the positive comments they received this past holiday season. “We moved into the house around Thanksgiving and we had our first family gathering at Christmas,” Chris explains. “It was the first time most of our friends and family had seen the house.” Their friends and family had definitely heard about the space. From Chris’ comments about stainless steel walls to a dining table made from I-beams, it’s no wonder everyone was intrigued.

Concept becomes reality Chris and Andrea bought the 4,500-square-foot home in north Tampa with the intention of remodeling. “After gutting the house and adding on an addition that doubled the size of the house, we were essentially starting with a blank slate,” Chris says. This gave the couple the freedom to create a one-of-a-kind kitchen to fit their personality and needs. Chris is not a stranger to the kitchen remodeling industry. As president of International Granite and Stone, he’s taken part in a plethora of kitchen renovations, both residential and commercial. “I’ve always had an interest in contemporary design,” he says. “It’s something about the architecture, the straight lines and linear design. I just knew I wanted my kitchen to incorporate that style.”

ABOVE: The back-lit onyx wall separating a bar can be seen from the kitchen. OPPOSITE: The back-lit onyx slab accentuates the wine rack.

The use of the metal is another eye-catching feature. The cooking area is turned into its own designated spot, thanks to an oversized, 60-inch stainless steel range, backsplash and inverted duct cover. “At first I think Andrea was worried the stainless steel would make the kitchen appear too cold,” Chris says. “But as soon as she saw it she loved it.” The stainless steel is also carried over to the island. Measuring roughly ten feet in length, the island is one of Chris’ favorite features. Just parallel to the range, the island includes a stainless steel countertop and sink, reminiscent of a restaurant kitchen prep table. To offset it from the perimeter cabinetry, the island features a wenge veneer cabinet base. Spectrus granite countertops, boasting a two-and-a-half inch mitered edge, on both the island and perimeter cabinets, tie the entire design together. Another impressive feature is the granite apron Chris ran down the front side of the island for visual interest.

A place for gathering Not only does the kitchen offer plenty of storage, it offers plenty of space for family and friends. The Stewarts decided not to add a separate dining room to the house. “Instead, the dining room is part of the kitchen, that way everyone can be together,” Chris says. “Between the island and table we can comfortably seat 16 people for dinner, all in one room.” The dining table is another unique element. Thanks to the wood top, it adds a touch of rustic flavor to the otherwise contemporary kitchen. “This is where the I-beams came into play,”

Chris adds. “Everyone thought I was crazy, but it makes for a great dining room table.” Now that the family has been in the house for a few months, Chris is coming up with other ideas, such as adding a floating glass countertop to the bar area between the kitchen and living room. Just like his nephew, Chris’ grandmother thinks the kitchen is cool too, although he doubts she watches MTV. “She loves the fact that we can all gather in the kitchen when we get together,” he adds. “Either way, I’ll take both complements!”
