WHY DESIGN ? “What is the difference between a billboard painter and an artist?”, a question asked by my art teacher when I was a child. Creativity was my answer. I think this also holds true for the value between science and design. Furthermore, I believe the knowledge of science I have learned not only can solve the engineering issues, but also can be a powerful tool to design a creative future. “What is design?”, I often ask myself this question. To me, design is what we can express our viewpoints for the issues and verify the ideas by experiments. Moreover, design provides the opportunity for me to challenge the various issues by using science knowledge and design thinking.

YouBike is the bike sharing system in Taipei city, and it became a popular method for people to travel in the Taipei city. However, according to the statistic data from Institute

Furthermore, in a thesis from Central Police University indicated that there are more than 90% injured people (92.2%) and death people (98.5%) in bicycle accident without wear helmet.

Although it is dangerous, but most of the people still do not wear the helmet when they are riding the YouBike. Therefore, in this project, I porposed a solution which can provide a simple process for people to get a helmet before they ride the

M O T I VAT I O N
In the design course, we’re asked to find out an urban renewal problem and to design a concert stage for this problem. The little white house urban renewal plan is an argued issue, because the construction company won’t destroy the monument directly, but the building will hide the beautiful scene from the monument. Therefore, our goal of this project is designing a concert stage and concert process to let more people know what is the impact of this building and wish them will oppose this urban renewal plan.
T H E TA M S U I C U S T O M S O F F I C E R ’S R E S I D E N C E
The Tamsui Customs Officer’s Residence was built between 1869 and 1876 and nicknamed the ‘Little White House’ because of its white color. After Tamsui was opened to foreign trade in the early 1860s, foreigners soon poured in to make business. The Qing government set up the Tamsui Customs and employed British tax magistrate Sir John W. Howell to take charge of it. Tamsui Customs Officer’s Residence is the only remaining one of the three residences built after 1869 for these foreign officers.

Little white house was located at the top of hill near the mouth of Tamsui river, so people can see the beautiful scene from this monument. However, there is a construction company plan to build a 27 floors building in front of little white house, and New Taipei city government didn’t reject this plan. If this building be constructed, people won’t see the beautiful scene from little white house again. Therefore, many people and organisations protest against this plan.

We took a field trip on the little white house, and we found that there are three sites could be the bases of concert stage. After discussed, we chose site 1 as our base of concert stage because this site is flat and in front of the little white house, where people can see the beautiful scene of Tamsui river. Moreover, we want to let people to know what is the impact if the building be constructed in front of the little white house. Therefore, we thought this is the best site for concert stage.
I M PA C T After we took a field trip on the little white house and discussed, we thought the construction of this building will not only hide the beautiful scene from the little white house, but also will make much pollution such as noise, air pollution, and water pollution of Tamsui river. Moreover, we thought vision is the most direct way for people to understand how this 27 floors building impact the little white house. Base on the concept of vision, we associate eye in thinking. Therefore, our design concept of this stage is eye.

Therefore, how to rescue survivals quickly become an important issue for the rescue team. When the natural catastrophes happened in the city, there are many people be trapped in the building and the rubble. Furthermore, the rescue team need to find and save the survivals in the 72-hour goldenwindow, which is considered the optimum time for rescue. Therefore, in this project, I designed a tool that helps survivals to be found faster and easier.

Emergency Backpack
ESC APE PROCESS When the disaster happens, people can follow the emergency exit lights to escape from the room, and the emergency backpack including many tools can help people survive after they escape from the building. However, there is no tool in the backpack can help people to be found when they are trapped in the building. I observed that there are many emergency lights in the building. Furthermore, I was thinking how to design an emergency light which can help people to be found when they are trapped in the building.

For example, when we are reading a book on the bed, walking in the dark rainy day, or cleaning up the dust under the bed. Therefore, I designed a light which the form is flexible and it can be placed wherever we want, so we can light all of the dark places.

M O T I VAT I O N Acrylic bead is one of the materials frequently used for the decoration and making the ornaments, and there are many families making these handicrafts in their leisure time to earn extra money for their family expenses in Taiwan. In this project, I want to use this material to make an amazing handicraft work which everyone can also make the same, just to follow the steps below.
CONCEPT The inspiration of this design came from a homework in my design course: a 30cm x 30cm cube to represent myself. I filled many pysslas in my cube, which stood for the knowledge I have learnt in my past life. Furthermore, I adhered circles of tapes to the appearance of the cube to express the restriction I put to myself. I tried to express my eagerness to break through the restriction and turned out to become an innovative designer, with all my knowledge. Open design is the topic of this exhibition, and I want to design a light featuring attractive shape and easy produce, so that people can make it themselves. Therefore, how to create a beautiful appearance but could also be easily produced, and with the acrylic beads filled in, is the most important issue in this project.
