CASE STUDY. AIRE VALLEY HOMES. Background: AVHL manages around 16,000 properties on behalf of the city council, from flats in inner city areas to semis in leafy suburbs. They provide homes for young people leaving care, growing families and elderly people living alone.
Brand awareness was a concern. Many tenants, particularly those who had lived in properties for a number of years, still believed their landlord was the council despite them relinquishing the role in 2003.
As an ALMO, resources are limited and a small team is responsible for the production of all customer communications, everything from newsletters to leaflets.
Resource solutions: We abide by the recommendations of the Plain English Society and the Crystal Mark. This ensured that the clarity of every AVHL publication was as good as it possibly could be.
Key issues: Many customers are from ethnic communities and English is not their first language. Making communications accessible to all was vital.
(If necessary, copy can be translated and publications printed in different languages. We have recently developed an on-going relationship with a leading translation company with whom we work on a number of accounts).
Tenant feedback was used to develop content and attending Tenant Panel meetings proved invaluable in improving the look and feel of printed material. Adopting and adhering to brand guidelines allowed us to establish a name and look quickly and effectively. So much so that a recent survey showed that 84% of customers are now aware the Aire Valley Homes Leeds are their landlord.

CASE STUDY. ACIS GROUP. Background: With offices in Gainsborough and Sheffield, Acis provides affordable social housing throughout Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire. They are responsible for more than 5,000 properties across a wide area that covers a diverse customer base. Their service doesn’t stop there. Advice for homeless people, sheltered housing projects, shared ownership schemes and supportive services are also part of their remit.
Late changes to both text and images were inevitable creating delays in the production process and potentially impacting on delivery dates. Making the publications engaging for a broad target group was also important as was the need to inform and involve both customers and partners.
They have a regular requirement for newsletters, printed literature and exhibition stands.
Resource Solutions: Crucial deadlines were met by adopting flexible operating methods that involved the client working closely with the studio team.
Key issues: Tight timescales were the real challenge for this client.
Having a dedicated Account Manager on each project also helped keep the job on track and running smoothly particularly when handling late amendments.
The fact that the print and mail out were handled at one site further accommodated last minute changes. Experience in the sector gave the designers vital insights into creating effective communication styles that were able to break down barriers and increase reader appeal.
