NEWS BRIEFS & INFORMATION Champion Bus Operator Honored continued from P.1 ing for Hurricane Rita, Charlie was in route to Dallas to become a hero,” said Wilson. The American Public Transportation Association’s (APTA) International Bus

Roadeo took place September 22 – 25. The Roadeo competition is designed to test safe bus operating skills. To win the challenging event, Kennedy drove his METRO bus thru several obstacle courses. One of them is set up with two lines of tennis balls only inches apart, and the operator must drive the rear wheels between them. Obstacle courses also address routine operations like the simulated

bus stop, where the operator who comes closest to the curb without actually touching it gets the highest rank. “I learned everything about bus driving here in METRO,” said the 15-year veteran operator. Asked about how he honed all his safe driving skills, Kennedy humbly replied: “I have to give all the credit to our training department.”

NABA presents second installment of $60,000 pledge to Howard University’s Center for Accounting Education Greenbelt, MD (BlackNews.com) - The National Association of Black Accountants (NABA), a leading association dedicated to advancing people of color in the accounting and finance industries, recently presented the second installment of its $60,000 pledge to Howard University's Center for Accounting Education (CAE). The CAE, located on Howard's Washington, D.C. campus, offers a range of programs to support highly talented African-American accounting graduates as they begin their careers. Dr. Hubert D. Glover, CMA, CIA, CPA, chair of Howard's School of Business Accounting Department, and Frank Ross, NABA founding president and director of the CAE, were on hand to receive a $20,000 check from Johnetta Boseman Hardy, NABA's deputy executive director, and Darryl R. Matthews, Sr., executive director and COO of NABA. “Accountants are in high demand, and it is important that programs like ours continue to flourish and offer the best accounting education available to people of color,” Glover said. “NABA's contribution will go towards our goal of increasing the actual number of Howard students entering into the accounting profession and enhancing their future in the field.” “Because the accounting industry will continue to be scrutinized, NABA recognizes the need to increase the pool of qualified black CPAs to lead compliant finance

departments,” NABA’s Matthews said. “By supporting programs such as the CAE, we are taking proactive measures to make sure that the accounting field will be rich with diversity in the future.” The CAE partnership is just one of many initiatives NABA has embarked on to support the advancement of people of color in accounting and finance. Last summer, NABA and its Division of Firms (DOF) participated in the CAE’s inaugural weeklong Leadership Skills Development program, where several senior audit and tax leaders from Deloitte and the DOF led participants through a series of courses focused on professional development as well as preparation for the CPA exam. NABA also joined forces with Becker CPA Review and Gleim Accounting Publications to offer high-quality, careerboosting CPA exam review workshops at its 34th Annual National Convention and Diversity Recruitment Expo last year in Detroit. NABA will partner with these organizations again and provide similar offerings at the 35th Annual National Convention and Diversity Recruitment Expo at The Westin Diplomat in Hollywood, Fla., June 13-17, 2006. NABA, Inc. is one of the premier professional organizations in the nation. NABA represents the interests of more than 100,000 people of color in the furtherance of their educational, professional and career goals in the related fields of accounting.

Thirteen/WNET New York Presents African American Lives PBS series to trace Black family trees through genealogy, DNA analysis, to premier in February continued from P.5 Louis Gates, Jr., W.E.B. Du Bois professor of the Humanities and chair of African and African American Studies at Harvard University, is the series host, revealing the participants' unique family histories while researching his own as well. AFRICAN AMERICAN LIVES will premiere Wednesdays February 1 and 8 at 9 p.m. (ET) on PBS. The series is a co-pr co-production of Thirteen/WNET New York and Kunhardt Productions Inc. Major funding is provided by The Coca-Cola Company and the following brands by the Procter & Gamble Company: Pringles®, Folgers®, Bounty®, Charmin®, Tide®, Downy®, Pampers®, Crest®. Additional funding for outreach activities is provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. AFRICAN AMERICAN LIVES works to restore its participants' lineages in reverse chronological order. Starting with the oral histories of the individuals' families, and drawing on photographs, film clips, music and early personal records, Dr. Gates begins to trace their family trees back through the 20th century. Noted historians and expert genealogists around America help fill in missing branches, in the process explaining how such major events as Jim Crow segregation and the post-World War I “Great Migration” from the South to the North helped shape African American families. “This is one of the most exciting projects in which I have been involved,” said Dr. Gates. “AFRICAN AMERICAN LIVES is about African American history, of course, but on a deeply personal level. Slavery deprived African Americans of their historical and familial memory, and this series is an attempt to restore that memory on both sides of the Atlantic.” Dr. Gates’ genealogical research becomes increasingly difficult as he proceeds back through the Reconstruction Era, Civil War, the Colonial and early slave trade periods in American history. When the genealogical road comes to an end, he turns to some of the country’s leading scientists involved in cuttingedge work using DNA samples to trace ancestral roots back to Africa. Finally, Dr. Gates joins one series participant in the last leg of the journey, across the Atlantic to the western coast of Africa. There, they visit an area where genetic, historical and

anthropological evidence suggests that the participant's ancestors once lived. In an era when ever-increasing numbers of Americans are investigating their genealogy, AFRICAN AMERICAN LIVES provides a timely and powerful demonstration of how meaningful reclaiming one's past can be as well as an understanding like never before of African American history. It is the first television series to explore black roots in both America and Africa using not only genealogy but also DNA, including fascinating stories of ancestors that were free during the time of slavery. And by spot-

lighting African American role models, the series hopes to inspire millions to consider their own heritage, and underscore for all Americans the importance of knowing their past, in order to

unlock the future. “In addition to its poignant personal stories,” continued Dr. Gates, “AFRICAN AMERICAN LIVES will be a great way to introduce young people to the

marvels of archival and scientific research and their practical applications. I hope that this project will encourage them and all Americans, especially those of African descent to explore their roots.” For some Americans, the essential question “Where do I come from?” cannot be answered; their history has been lost or stolen. But through its genealogical research and groundbreaking DNA analysis, AFRICAN AMERICAN LIVES will not only provide a transformational discovery for several Please see PBS SERIES, P.13

FPA Houston Offers Tips to Break the Paycheck-toPaycheck Cycle

Are you ready? Is Entrepreneurship For You? In business, there are no guarantees. There is simply no way to eliminate all the risks associated with starting a small business - but you can improve your chances of success with good planning, preparation, and insight. Start by evaluating your strengths and weaknesses as a potential owner and manager of a small business. Carefully consider each of the following questions. Are you a self-starter? It will be entirely up to you to develop projects, organize your time, and follow through on details. How well do you get along with different personalities? Business owners need to develop working relationships with a variety of people including customers, vendors, staff, bankers, and professionals such as lawyers, accountants or consultants. Can you deal with a demanding client, an unreliable vendor, or a cranky receptionist if your business interests demand it? How good are you at making decisions? Small business owners are required to make decisions constantly often quickly, independently, and under pressure. Do you have the physical and emo-

tional stamina to run a business? Business ownership can be exciting, but it's also a lot of work. Can you face six or seven 12--hour work days every week? How well do you plan and organize? Research indicates that poor planning is responsible for most business failures. Good organization - of financials, inventory, schedules, and production can help you avoid many pitfalls. Is your drive strong enough? Running a business can wear you down emotionally. Some business owners burn out quickly from having to carry all the responsibility for the success of their business on their own shoulders. Strong motivation will help you survive slowdowns and periods of burnout. How will the business affect your family? The first few years of business start-up can be hard on family life. It’s important for family members to know what to expect and for you to be able to trust that they will support you during this time. There also may be financial difficulties until the business becomes profitable, which could take months or years. You may have to adjust to a lower standard of living or put family assets at risk in the short-term.

KNOW YOURSELF

ness. They also are able to learn from their mistakes, trust their own judgment and have an optimistic outlook. Take a good look. Do those traits describe you? “Know yourself and be willing to work 60 hours a week. Starting a business is one of life's biggest commitments,” advises Roy Nordman, director of Emerging Business Services Practice for the San Francisco office of Coopers & Lybrand. Small business owner Nancy Wansick, of Wansick Graphics, echoes those sentiments: “My business has become my whole life. Day becomes night and work has become play.” It’s obvious: you have to love your work. And if you choose a business that meshes with your personality (the answers to the above questions should tell you about your personality), those extra hours spent won’t be as difficult. The key is to identify what you enjoy doing the most and then find a business opportunity that makes use of your skills and interests.

Not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur. It takes a special talent. Some owners of small businesses have it and some don’t. Before you invest time, energy, money and a piece of your heart, it's important to do some serious selfanalysis. To answer such questions as: Am I prepared to work hard and make sacrifices? Am I self-disciplined? Do I have management ability? Am I experienced enough in this field? What do I want out of life? Are my goals realistic and attainable? Studies have shown that entrepreneurs are persevering and not easily defeated. They thrive in a challenging environment and have a tremendous need to be in control. They turn diversity into opportunity. They are risk takers. They welcome responsibility, and they are willing and able to make decisions. Moreover, successful entrepreneurs are patient and able to wait out the sometimes slow beginnings of a busi-

Houston, TX – The number of households living paycheck to paycheck is staggering. Nearly 60 percent of the households in America with children under age 18 and over half of those nearing retirement depend on their latest paycheck to met expenses reports MetLife in a recent survey. The problem is not just for the nation’s poorest. The same survey found that one-third of workers earning $75,000 or more a year live from one paycheck to the next. “Families that live paycheck to paycheck are one financial emergency away from financial crisis,” said Les Vicain, president, Financial Planning Association of Houston. “An unexpected car repair, illness or job loss would put these families at the very least in debt and at the worst cause financial ruin.” To help break the paycheck-to-paycheck cycle, FPA of Houston offers the following tips: Start with a plan. You can’t get where you want to go if you don’t know where you are going. A spending plan is a map to help you get control of your expenses and decide where your money goes. Keep track of your expenses for one month including all cash purchases for coffee or lunches out. This can be somewhat tedious but is worth the effort. Many people find they are spending hundreds of dollars each month on things they did not realize and that are not that important to them. Prioritize and trim expenses. Your spending plan gives you back control because you now know exactly what you owe, when it is due and can begin to prioritize your bills. Mortgage or rent, utilities, transportation, insurance and healthcare expenses should be at the top of the list. Next come the items that you have more control over how much you spend each month. A family of four can live on $600 a month in food expenses if you plan ahead and shop smart. However, many families spend twice that much on food unnecessarily. Look at your food, clothing and entertainment expenses and try to cut them by 20 percent at least. Provide a cushion for a crash. An emergency savings fund should be your first priority once you have established your spending plan and trimmed expenses. With a tight budget it is difficult to save, but even a small amount will add up in time. Commit to saving as much as you can each month and increase the amount, as you are able. Your goal is to save three to six months of living expenses in an account that you do not use for any reason other than a financial emergency. Stop charging. The only way to stop the paycheck-topaycheck cycle is to live below your means. In other words, spend less than your income. Any purchases made with credit cards that are not paid off at the end of the month are extending your income with the often-high additional cost of finance charges. If you cannot pay the balance when the bill comes in, do not charge it. Look to the future. It is important to set financial goals, both short and long term. If you pay for holiday purchases every year with credit, one goal may be to save enough to pay cash for those expenses. A summer vacation is a great short-term goal and a good motivator to save the money necessary to make that goal a reality. Some common long-term goals include college tuition expenses and retirement. Breaking the paycheck-to-paycheck cycle is not easy, but most households can do it with smart planning and a little will power. -----------------------------------------------------------------------Financial Planning Association of Houston is a nonprofit membership organization of Certified Financial Planning professionals located in Houston. Tax Tips From The Internal Revenue Service

Seven Ways to Get a Jump Start on Your Taxes Earlier is better when it comes to working on your taxes. Taxpayers are encouraged to get a head start on tax preparation, especially since early filers avoid the last minute rush and get their refunds sooner. Here are seven easy ways to get a good jump on your taxes long before the April deadline is here: 1. Gather your records in advance. Make sure you have all the records you need, including W2s and 1099s. Don’t forget to save a copy for your files. 2. Get the right forms. They’re available around the clock on the IRS Web site, IRS.gov. 3. Take your time. Don’t forget to leave room for a coffee break when filling out your tax return as rushing can mean making a mistake. 4. Double-check your math and verify all Social Security numbers. These are among the most common errors found on tax returns. Taking care will reduce your chance of hearing from the IRS and speed up your refund. 5. Get the fastest refund. When you file early, you receive your refund faster. When you choose direct deposit, you receive your refund sooner than waiting for a check 6. E-filing is easy. E-filing catches math problems, provides confirmation your return has been received and gives you a faster refund. 7. Don’t panic. If you have a problem or a question, remember the IRS is there to help. Try the IRS Web site at IRS.gov or call the IRS customer service number at 1800-829-1040.

customer demands and grow market share. “Corporate leaders are expected to accomplish more in less time but are confronted with key challenges, including driving shareholder value, retaining talent, establishing a strong technology infrastructure, and assessing merger or acquisition opportunities. The most successful executives develop and implement long-term strategies for their organizations, manage business risk to enhance performance and motivate employees to achieve their best.” --------------------------------------------------Robert Half Management Resources has more than 100 offices throughout North America, Europe and Australia, and offers online job search services at www.rhmr.com.

To reconstruct the family trees of its participants, AFRICA AMERICAN LIVES is working in conjunction with

Ancestry.com, a leading Internet-based genealogy firm with one of the largest online collections of family history records. Among the scientists involved in the series’ DNA analysis is Dr. Peter Forster, a Fellow and Praelector at the University of Cambridge who has used DNA for genealogical, archeological and forensic casework; Dr. Fatimah Jackson, professor of Applied Biological Anthropology at the University of Maryland and co-founder of the first human DNA bank in Africa; Dr. Rick Kittles, co-founder of the ancestry-tracing firm African Ancestry, Inc., whose database contains over 20,000 lineages from more than 389 indigenous African popula-

Innovative new analytical techniques are also being developed for the project in conjunction with the Santa Clara-based biotechnology firm Affymetrix. AFRICAN AMERICAN LIVES will be accompanied by a far-reaching educational component. Working in cooperation with seven public television stations in key markets across the country, Thirteen's teacher-training initiative will provide direct, hands-on training to more than 1,000 K-through- 12 educators, guiding them in the use of the broadcast program, Web site, and print materials in

standards-based classroom instruction. Extensive outreach is also being planned with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, as well as historical organizations and museums nationwide, to engage children and families of all ages in an exploration of their family origins. AFRICAN AMERICAN LIVES' vibrant companion Web site will feature a beginner's guide to tracing one's own family tree, giving visitors step-by-step guidance in how to research their own past. While there will be many heated races in the upcoming 2006 March Primary, the race for State Representative of District 146 will no doubt be of the most interest to Blacks. Houston Highlight Publishing, L.L.C., the publisher of Houston Business Connections and “Eye On Houston” has chosen this race as the feature race of the 2006 March Primary. You can take part along with our readers in answering our current poll question as well as comment on the candidates in this race.

The Question In Your Opinion Can Rep. Al Edwards Be Defeated? Yes, he can and I think Borris L. Miles Can Do It. ABOUT BORRIS L. MILES: He is a lifelong resident of the district who grew up in Sunnyside. A former law enforcement officer, Miles left a corporate career to launch his own insurance agency. He started as a one-man operation in his garage apartment, and today his company - Borris L. Miles Insurance - writes more than $12 million dollars in insurance premiums annually according to his campaign website. Yes, he can and I think Al Bennett can do it. ABOUT Al BENNETT: He is a fourth generation Texan and has lived in Houston for 22 years. He grew up in Ennis, where he attended public schools. He came to Houston in 1983 to attend the University of Houston, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science in 1988. After graduating from UT Law School, Al went to work as an Associate at the law firm of Fulbright & Jaworski, L.L.P., in Houston. He later worked as an Associate at the firm Solar & Fernandes, L.L.P., also in Houston. In 1998, Al set up his own law practice, opening the Law Offices of Alfred H. Bennett, where he is a sole practitioner and specializes in complex commercial and tort litigation matters. No, Rep. Al Edwards Will Not Lose.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT THE RACE! -------------------------------------------------------------------Posted By: Samuel T. Posted On: Sunday, January 1, 2006 Views: 257 Edwards Will Win! -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The people will not be fooled in the coming election. Rep. Al Edwards will win the March Primary by a large margin. His track record of service to the black community will speak for him.

-------------------------------------------------------------------Posted By: Eugene Thomas Posted On: Saturday, December 31, 2005 Views: 317 Who can beat Al? -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I feel Borris is the best person to take Al's place. Al should be thinking along these lines also. Borris is in a good position, financially independent, and has proven his commitment to the community having years ago moved his main office within and becoming more hands on in assisting it's citizens. He will do the better job of representing those who have supported Al for so long. He has more commitment and less ego.

-------------------------------------------------------------------Posted By: Charee Groce Posted On: Wednesday, December 28, 2005 Views: 432 Al Bennett Best All Around -------------------------------------------------------------------As voters, we have to take a close look at who is representing us. Are they up on the issues? Do they care about the needs? Do they understand what it takes to propose and pass a law? Are they morally responsible and will their colleagues at the Capital respect them? If you look at those questions, I think you will see that Al Bennett is the only candidate that gets a yes answer to each question.

Al Edwards- Has been in position for 20+ years and spent time on worrying about cheerleaders instead of while some of our students in the district don't have recent text books. Also Texas Monthly Magazine named him one of the worst legislators in Texas. Boris Miles- First of all he can be cited on quite a few moral issues, won't go there. But also, does he really understand the job and laws? Or does he just want to beat Al Edwards to spite him and for a popularity contest?

W Accounting, Finance Starting Salaries To Increase 3.1 Percent in 2006 Rise in Compensation Levels Correlates with Demand for Accounting Talent MENLO PARK, CA — Heightened competition for accounting and finance professionals will lead to increases in base compensation next year, according to the just-released 2006 Salary Guide from Robert Half International Inc. Starting salaries in accounting and finance are projected to rise an average of 3.1 percent in 2006. Research shows that starting salaries for personnel involved with corporate governance initiatives — such as internal auditors, information technology (IT) auditors and public accountants — are expected to see the strongest growth. Robert Half International Inc. is the world’s first and largest specialized consulting and staffing services firm. The company’s financial staffing divisions include Robert Half® Finance & Accounting, Accountemps® and Robert Half® Management Resources, for full-time, temporary and senior-level project professionals, respectively. The 2006 Salary Guide is based on an analysis of the thousands of job placements managed by the company’s U.S. offices. “Organizations are actively recruiting accounting and finance staff to support business expansion initiatives and corporate governance efforts,” said Max Messmer, chairman and CEO of Robert Half International. “To attract and retain skilled financial professionals, firms are reassessing their hiring practices and enhancing compensation packages for current staff.” Auditing Remains Strong in Corporate Accounting For the second consecutive year, corporate auditors can expect to see the strongest salary growth. IT auditors can expect the largest percentage increase in base compensation of any position in 2006, Please see SURVEY, P.17

Other key findings reported in the 2006 Salary Guide: * Tax managers at midsize companies will see average starting salaries of $57,750 to $74,000 — up 4.6 percent over 2005 levels. * Bookkeepers can anticipate a 6.8 percent rise in base compensation in the year ahead. * Entry-level accountants at midsize companies will see starting salaries rise 4.1 percent, to $32,000 to $38,250 annually. * Mutual fund accountants can anticipate a 4.7 percent gain in base compensation, to the range of $38,000 to $51,250 annually. *Accounts receivable/accounts payable managers at small companies will see starting salaries climb 5.2 percent, to the range of $33,750 to $41,500. Nationally, demand for accounting and finance professionals is expected to be particularly strong in the manufacturing, real estate and construction industries. (All salaries listed are national averages. However, hiring activity and compensation vary significantly by geographic market. A regional analysis of hiring trends and compensation variances for select U.S. markets is included in the Salary Guide.) Information in the Salary Guide is based on the thousands of job searches, negotiations and placements managed each year by the company’s staffing and recruiting managers. Continuing or ongoing salaries are not reported because many external factors — such as seniority, work ethic, job performance and training — impact the salaries of full-time professionals as work histories develop. For decades, companies nationwide have consulted Robert Half International’s Salary Guide to determine appropriate compensation for all levels of accounting and finance professionals. In addition, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics references the guide in the preparation of its comprehensive Occupational Outlook Handbook.

Star Jones Reynolds coming to Houston Sunday, Feb. 19 continued from P.1 Then why was she feeling so down? It all began when Star took a close look at herself and her life and realized she was not happy with what she saw: obesity precluded her from crossing her legs, she needed an asthma inhaler, she couldn’t fasten her own necklace, and worst of all, she got too tired to shop – a disaster because Star Jones Reynolds is a seriously committed shopper. Then she realized something else: with all her extraordinary accomplishments, none of it mattered without true love.

As State Representative, Al Bennett’s priorities will include increasing state funding for public education, providing affordable prescriptions for senior citizens, increasing children’s healthcare benefits, and creating economic development through partnerships with private businesses.

Bennett’s Official Election Announcement “I am very proud to announce that I am seeking the March 2006 Democratic nomination for State Representative District 146. The time for a new voice and new priorities for our district has arrived,” Bennett stated.

Bennett on His Priorities “We need a public school finance bill that will ensure that all students, regardless of economic status, will receive the best education possible. We need a public health care system that allows all of our senior citizens to afford their prescription medication and all of our children to receive the proper preventative healthcare. And finally, we need partnerships between our government and private businesses to spur economic development where none or little has existed before. All of this can be accomplished. It is simply a matter of priorities.”
