Jim Rice is Right for Fort Bend ISD Trustee Pos. 3 By Burt Levine
Jim Rice, elected first to Fort Bend ISD Board Pos. 3 in 2010, is respected for his tireless, empirically ethical work in concert with his elected colleagues which produces for FBISD students, parents and taxpayers throughout all FBISD a fast growth diverse school district that overcomes its challenges and breaks barriers. “In this sacred role in which I serve the community my wife and I have called our home for near 40 years, raised our three sons and built our businesses, my mission is to listen twice as much I speak. To FBISD TRUSTEE best serve this district that’s POSITION #3 charged with educating a growing population of over 77,300 students, and that is more evenly balanced racially and ethnically than perhaps anywhere else in America -- listening to the people is very important. Our district has a $700 million budget, which comes from the hard-working families of FBISD to educate their children and the 11,000 employees that earn their

living here. The Fort Bend Independent School District is the largest employer in Fort Bend County,” says Jim Rice regarding the many facets of his role as the FBISD Trustee for Position #3. “We came here when this pretty much was pioneer prairie and have been part of Sugar Land and Fort Bend ever since. I’m proud of the fact that all three of our sons, along with my wife and I are active in this community. They were raised in, and graduated from FBISD, went on to graduate from college, are Eagle Scouts and are contributing Fort Bend County citizens,” he said. Rice has served in private business leading in construction and management projects for most of his adult life -which inspired him as an entrepreneur to build his own local business in the area. He knows the critical responsibility involved daily in FBISD TRUSTEE achieving benchmarks before POSITION #3 deadlines, making payroll and dealing with employee benefits and taxes. “As a homeowner and business property taxpayer, I’ve fought against offers to increase tax rates. As a governing board, we’ve successfully done a great deal during trying economic times to fight tax hikes. We’ve cut the tax rate. I’ve supported every budget and teacher pay raises to retain current teachers in FBISD without raising taxes. I’ve led the way with my fellow trustees to point out areas where we could work together to cut costs and waste, and by doing so, we’ve increased efficiency,” Rice said. He’s also worked diligently with

the Board and Administration to save more than $3 million in utility costs using his expertise. Rice has also worked on building committees overseeing tremendous growth at Christ United Methodist where he and his family worship. He’s helped countless boys earn Eagle Scout over more than 20 years in BSA leadership at every level regionally, from Cub Scouts Den Master to Sam Houston Area Council. With his friend Dr. Bob McClendon he met at Boy Scouts, he built Fort Bend Cares that has contributed millions to Fort Bend area youth charities. As a small business owner, the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce to Rice was critical. He graduated from the Fort Bend Chamber Leadership Forum back in 2005. He later became Vice Chair of the Education Division of the Fort Bend Chamber, Greater Fort Bend Economic Development Council Member and Literacy Council of Fort Bend Board Member. After watching Rice serve in various roles business, FBISD TRUSTEE education, POSITION #3 elected, and most importantly, fellow parents began asking him to run for the School Board -- which according to Rice has been one of his most important honors. “Throughout Fort Bend County our neighbors are from virtually everywhere on earth. We have one of the highest populations of foreign-born citizens that you’re going to find anywhere in America. Our students come to us with the most diverse backgrounds Jim you can Rice

imagine. And because of this, we have invested millions of dollars into programs that have nearly erased disparities that exist in other counties. To this end, I am proud of what we have achieved. And my mission is for us to continue,” Rice said. Rice has served twice as FBISD Board President. He is First Vice President of the Texas Association of School Boards. He often travels to Austin, across Texas, and to many other states, as well as to Washington DC with the National Association of School Boards. Serving is this capacity has enabled Rice to interact with U.S. Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, Congress Members, Pete Olson and Al Green, Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov Dan Patrick and Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar to keep them accountable to Fort Bend ISD. “I work with State Senators Joan Huffman, Lois Kolkhorst, and Borris Miles. I also work with State Representatives Rick Miller, Ron Reynolds, John Zerwas and Phil Stephenson because I want all that is best for Fort Bend ISD students. Those relationships aren’t because we agree on every issue; but because I want what is best for all FBISD students. We can, and must listen to one another as we work together to take FBISD to the next level,” says Jim Rice.
