VOTING SHOULD BE A FAMILY AFFAIR THE FUTURE OF AMERICA IS AT STAKE
What’s Really Going On America?
causing the household to rejoice. It’s in our hands American citizens. We have the power to reform our country into an image we can be proud to look at and say, yes now that’s me. America we can do this, so let’s stop bashing our governing authority and lets use that energy to focus on getting to the polls to elect those who represent the “true you” and erase what you may call a false dead beat governing image that stands before us. Grandparents and parents alike should take all those years of built up frustration and organize a family accountability plan for voting. This plan should be focused on getting our grandchildren and children to realize that they WILL vote, and it is not an option. We thank God for those who have stepped outside of their call of duty to encourage our families; but enough is enough. Family leaders, we must transform this feeble unproductive look with what we’ve been given -- the right to make an informed voting decision.
Bishop Anthony A. Allen – Apostle, Entrepreneur, Author and Music artist.
Over time, I’ve wondered who’s really to blame for the lack of true progress in our country. Is it our governing leadership – whom some have called out on numerous occasions to be incompetent, unconcerned, greedy slackers? Or is it us?
If this is truly a country that’s, "of the people, for the people, and by the people", then I have to go with "it’s us" and admit that lack of progress is a reflection of our own making. To admit this brings me pain and should you too; to the point of seeking undeniable resolve. Because to understand that the image of our government, and the progressive production of our country is in our hands and not strive to implement that which can make it a beautiful successful item, would be like parents starving the children they’ve been given and expecting them to achieve excellence to the point of

“I’m Asking for Your Vote!”
You’ve heard the soundbytes, read the endorsements and done your homework. Still, you are confused about who is the right candidate to vote for. After all, this is a very important election. In my race for Texas House of Representatives - District 139, there are 4 vying for the seat that Mayor Sylvester Turner held for so long. I am thankful for the opportunity to work alongside them as we talk about the issues that we face. I am a stand - alone candidate. My donors are from within the District. My endorsements are from independent organizations and businesses that I did not have to pay in order to receive their support. Those endorsements came after multiple candidate screenings about the real issues. I not only addressed those issues, I offered real and practical solutions. I did not and will not rely on political favors of special interest groups, lobbyist or political heavy hitters that will want favors once elected to the House. Instead, I have relied on the people who live, work and play in District 139. My experience as a policy analyst for the Texas House of Representatives makes me uniquely qualified for the Representatives seat. Instead of sitting on a board of directors offering my opinions, I will go to Austin and enter the legislation that I have already researched and entered into the public record. I will be able to stand on the floor of our Capitol and fight for the solutions that will make life better for each and every one of you. Legislation like the much needed Criminal Justice Reform that everyone talks about but does nothing to fix. Let’s stop criminalizing our children in elementary school and actually start funding education so that much needed resources are available to at-risk children. Let’s stop the unfair jailing of the poor. Debtors’ prisons should no longer exist. While imprisonment for debt was common in colonial times in the United States, subsequent constitutional provisions, legislation, and court rulings all called for the abolition of incarcerating individuals to collect debt. Despite these prohibitions, individuals who are unable to pay debts are now regularly
incarcerated, and the vast majority of them are indigent. In 2015, at least ten lawsuits were filed against municipalities for incarcerating individuals in modern-day debtors’ prisons. Let’s put legislation on the floor to ensure our workers are protected in their retirement years. I’ll fight for the teachers and first-responders to have quality health and retirement programs while working to rid the fraud and waste from our budget. I’ll bring support to the small business owner who creates jobs that will restore prosperity here in District 139 by entering in legislation that reduces regulations that burden them. We will focus on Economic Development that makes sense. It’s time to get real in Austin. It’s time to stop the career politicians who serve their cronies and ignore the day to day issues that our community faces. It’s time to elect a servant of the people who will put the people first and not their political allies and lobby groups. I am that candidate. I will commit to you to be the voice you need to be heard in Austin. I just need you to stand with me and cast your ballot for me, Kimberly Willis.
Kimberly is seen with Ms. Julie who is 99 years old and Ms. Glenda.
Kimberly Willis is a native Acres Home resident, has a BS from Baylor University, MS from Prairie View University and MS from University of Houston. Member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. VOTE IN THE PRIMARY OF YOUR CHOICE ON TUESDAY, MARCH 1, 2016
Your VOTE Is Your VOICE - Make Sure You Are Heard! By Dr. D. Z. Cofield, Senior Pastor Good Hope MBC
People complain over and over again about what’s wrong in our society and what politicians are doing and not doing to, or for, the community and their constituents. People complain about the injustices within the criminal justice system and schools that are graduating students who are under educated and therefore unemployable. From barbershops to beauty shops, from bridge clubs to social clubs, from fraternities to sororities, people grumble, mumble and complain over and over again about what’s wrong in our society. But what would happen if everyone who complained actually went out and voted? If only 20-30% of registered voters actually vote, do you think only 20-30% of registered voters actually complain? The sad truth is I believe there are more people who could vote and don’t than those who actually do vote, and if you can vote and don’t you shouldn’t complain. Bad officials and policies are allowed to remain in place when good citizens don’t vote. In 1981 Pres. Ronald Reagan said, “For this nation to remain true to it’s principles, we cannot allow any American’s vote to be denied, diluted or defiled.” Perhaps the greatest tragedy in our society is the fact that too many people render their right to vote impotent by not exercising that right.
We turn out most to vote for a presidential election, but the results of our state, county and city elections, both primary and general, are more important to your day-to-day existence than any national election because our local public servants will directly impact you, your family and your friends. School board members can decide the quality of your child’s education or whether your neighborhood school remains
open or closes. Local judges will rule on cases in your community. Community college board members will decide on many of the post-secondary educational opportunities for our young adults. Your Justice of the Peace will decide if local residents are evicted or will have another opportunity to stay in their homes. Local elections matter. Your vote matters. From the lack of economic development and job creation to
public safety, healthcare and public education, people want something better. You want something better, and the way to begin bringing about change is to get involved and vote. In 1965 Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson said, “The vote is the most powerful instrument ever devised by man for breaking down injustice and destroying the terrible walls which imprison men because they are different from

other men.” Voting works. If voting didn’t work there would be no women’s rights, no public schools, no minimum rage, no Civil Rights Act, no Social Security, no Medicare, no Medicaid, no workers compensation, no environmental laws, and no health insurance. The fact is voting makes a difference. Your vote makes a difference, so get out and vote. As Mahatma Gandhi admonished, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world,” and the change you want to see should first be shown in how you vote. YOUR VOTE IS YOUR VOICE! Let your voice be heard by making sure you GO AND VOTE!

“I’m encouraging you to elect my son Jarvis Johnson as the next State Rep. for HD-139” stands and have assisted in writing legislation. He served on the Houston City Council Flooding and Drainage, Housing and Community Development, International Liaison and Protocol, M/WBE, Small Contractor Development and Contract Compliance, Pension Review, Public Safety and Homeland Security, Regulation, Development, Neighborhood Protection and Transportation, Infrastructure & Aviation. All the committees and work Jarvis has done help to compliment the work Sylvester Turner was also doing on a state level.
Present State legislative issues that Jarvis assisted with: Mental Health Screening, Individuals with Mental Health Issues in Jail, Employment for Youths with a Mental Health Diagnosis (Jarvis worked as a Mental Health Specialist for MHMRA in the mental health unit at the county jail)
HB 1430 – relating to the inclusion of mental health in the public services endorsement on a public school diploma and in information about health science career pathways HB 19 – relating to mental health and preventive services programs for veterans’ and military families HB 39 - relating to guardianships for incapacitated persons HB 867 – relating to the establishment and operation of the Texas Women Veterans Program HB 1762 – relating to the creation of a health care advocacy program for veterans
At this time, he serves on the community committee “Protecting, Positive, Parents” with Attorney Tyeshe Elam who launched the effort to get Section 157.162 (d) of the Texas Family Code” reinstated in order to address the issue of protecting parents that are doing the right thing and doing what is best for the child.
Cleo Glenn Johnson-McLaughlin (right) with the late Congressman Mickey Leland.
From the Desk of Cleo Glenn Johnson-McLaughlin
I am Cleo Glenn Johnson-McLaughlin; and many of you may know me from when I worked for the late Congressman Mickey Leland, as his Special Assistant and Community Outreach Specialist.
However, this letter is not about me, it is about my son, Jarvis Johnson who is running for State Representative for District 139.
Before leaving City Council, Jarvis secured $2 million for the E. O. Smith Education Center for a library and $3.2 million to refurbish the old Deluxe Theater in 5th Ward, for its transformation into a community arts program; spearheaded by Texas Southern University. Just a side note; this was a project started by the late Congressman Mickey Leland in the early 80’s, while Jarvis was a member of the late Congressman’s youth task force.
Jarvis Johnson is the owner of Aunt Bea’s Restaurant, where he hosts luncheons for veterans, senior citizens and youth organizations. This year was his 5th year hosting the Veteran’s luncheon and because the group has grown, he hosted three luncheons for them.
With his sister Velika, 17 years ago, they started Academic Beginnings Child Development Center in Houston & Austin, where both their children attended. Jarvis Johnson is an entrepreneur, consultant, developer, motivational speaker and the radio talk show host for “A Hire Houston” on KCOH.
As I stated this is just a snapshot of the work he has already done to empower and improve District 139 and the community at large, let’s send Jarvis to Austin so we can continue improving the community!
Let me share a snapshot of what Jarvis has done over the years. Jarvis became Director of Phoenix Outreach Youth Center in 5th Ward in the early 1990’s, before his graduation from Texas Southern University, majoring in Communications. In his senior year he was voted the Most Outstanding Student of the Year for Community Service by the Communication Department due to his work in the community and with youth.
Then in 2000 he was selected out of a pool of 5000 applicants from around the country to be one of the youngest top 10 winners of the “Do Something Brick Award under 30”, hosted by Rolling Stone Magazine in New York City.
As he continued to work with youth, he decided in 2005, to run for City Council to represent the people of District B. He had just been elected when Hurricane Katrina hit, and because Houston was the pipeline to the influx of people arriving from Louisiana, Jarvis stepped up to the plate and was one of the first to respond to getting the Astrodome open and computers set up so displaced people could connect with their family. Due to the great need in the Northwest side of Houston and because of the increase in people since Hurricane Katrina, he assisted in getting a food bank established at St. Monica Catholic Church.
Jarvis successfully worked to accomplish many good things as your City Councilman, now he wants to represent you again as your State Representative for District 139.
Please know House District 139 needs someone with a history of working with and in the community. District 139 needs hands on experience, someone young enough to run the long haul, but old enough to know how to bring about change.
Jarvis has the experience, he’s handled budgets, help create ordinances, and he under-

Dear Fellow Constituents,
My name is James Eric Reed and I would like to take this opportunity to announce my candidacy for the Harris County Precinct 3 Constable position. Hence, I respectfully ask for your vote and your support in the 2016 primary election.
Equally important is the fact that I am the proud son of Late Mr. Elvin S. Reed and Patricia Reed. I am also younger brother to Donnie Reed and husband to Sandra C. Andrade-Reed. Together, Sandra and I have one child, Zane Reed. From a previous marriage I have 3 other children, Nikki, Erica and Prince and 4 grandchildren. the
I was born and raised in Barrett Station and it was there that I learned the value and importance of loyalty, trust and respect. Having lived in Harris County Precinct 3 since birth and having served as a Harris County Deputy since 1994, I have dedicated myself to the service of the people. At the age of 15 I served in the Barrett Station fire department as an EMS volunteer. Years later I served as captain of the fire department as well as a board member of the Crosby EMS team.
As a Harris County Deputy, I have had the privilege of working in many schools including middle schools and high schools. Having worked at these schools has allowed me insight into the problems affecting our streets and our youth. I believe that my non-judgmental and fair approach in dealing with people has helped me positively impact many lives. I also believe that I have helped guide and encourage many children onto a brighter and better future. Our children are our future and when I earn their trust and win their loyalty, I know I have done my job.
Furthermore, being a local resident, I am also well acquainted with the problems facing our communities. Therefore, as your Precinct 3 Constable, I will continue to dedicate myself and my department to the service of our communities and schools by identifying community needs, focusing on public safety, implementing crime prevention programs and allocating department resources to improving customer service. So, when elected, I will work diligently to restore a sense of trust, pride and efficiency back to Precinct 3 by being visible and accessible in our Precinct. Please vote ERIC REED and let me prove that together we can create a better quality of life for all.

With a Republican-controlled House, Rep. Thompson passed major legislation combating human trafficking, increasing the penalty for sex offenders, obtaining insurance coverage for anti-cancer medication and banning so-called "puppy mills."
A former public school teacher and a strong believer in education, Rep. Thompson's amicus brief court she submitted on behalf of the North Forest Independent School District was cited by the Texas Supreme Court when they declared Texas' old public school finance system unconstitutional.
In 1977, Rep. Thompson used her own personal fund to convince the United States Justice Department to successfully sue Texas for discrimination in financing, hiring and admissions at Texas' traditionally Black universities, leading the way in creating a fund to improve facilities, libraries and faculty at Prairie View A & M and Texas Southern University.
Awards and Honors
In 2011, Rep. Thompson received the Patient Care Champion Care Award from the Harris County Medical Society, the Legislator of the Year Award from the Texas Family Law Foundation, a Friend of County Government Award from the Texas Association of Counties and was named one of the most outstanding legislators by Capitol Inside's first AllDecade Team for 2000s and one of the Top 10 Best Legislators by Capitol Inside and Texas Tribune, two popular online political subscriptions.
Among many other honors, Rep. Thompson is the only recipient of the Rosa Parks Award from the Texas Legislative Black Caucus and also received the Matt Garcia Award from the Mexican-American Legislative Caucus. She was selected as an Eleanor Roosevelt Fellow by the Center for Public Policy Alternatives. She has been named one of Texas Monthly´s "Top 10 Legislators"; and the Associated Press (AP) named her one of 6 lawmakers "Who Rocked the Legislature." State Rep. Ron E. Reynolds (HD-27) is seeking re-election while fighting what he believes to be a miscarriage of justice he received in Montgomery County. Reynolds is seeking to hold on to his seat while appealing his recent conviction on five counts of Misde-
meanor barratry. He is out of jail after posting a $25,000 bond to gain his freedom -- as he fights to clear his name. His appeal in the “MISDEMEANOR BARRATRY CASE” is being handled by his fellow State Representative Harold Dutton (HD -142) – a well-known Houston-area legislator and attorney. In a recent television interview Dutton seemed to allude to the fact that racism may have been a factor
in the case against Reynolds – calling it “Conroe Justice.” It is also fair to note that, the misdemeanor conviction (alone) does not disqualify State Rep. Ron Reynolds from continuing to serve the people of Fort Bend County.

Mayor Allen Owen Announces Re-Election Bid
Missouri City Mayor Prepares for May 7, 2016 Election
Missouri City Mayor Allen Owen has announced he is filing for re-election. Owen and his wife of 48 years Jane have made Missouri City home for nearly 40 years. Both are passionately proud of the city they love. “I’ve dedicated my life as a committed husband, father, business leader/builder and civic volunteer to make Missouri City the best city imaginable.” After retiring from banking, Owen became increasingly involved in improving the quality of life in the city. “In recent years, we’ve worked hard with our City Council, its economic development team and local the business community to attract over $500,000,000 in new business, leading to hundreds of new jobs, and to Missouri City being voted as one of two Texas cities of the top 50 cities in the USA to live in.” According to Forbes Magazine, Missouri City continues to be one of America’s safest, most affordable and best quality of life places to raise a family,
build a business, live, and retire. In a recent Rice University study, Missouri City was named “the most ethnically diverse city in the most ethnically diverse region in the country.” “I’m particularly proud of our continuing push by City Council to improve public safety. We recently opened Fire Station Number 5, are working to build Fire Station 6 and approved pay raises for Police and Fire Forces and all city workers. We’ve hired five new Motorcycle Police Officers.” In spite of struggling economic conditions in other areas, “Missouri City home values have jumped 14 percent and remain one of the best buys in the area, because of our proximity to Houston, the Texas Medical Center, Energy Corridor and the Port of Houston.” Owen serves on many boards, committees and civic organizations throughout Missouri City. “Engagement is critical to me. We’re excited about HCC building at Texas Parkway adjacent to City Hall with a $35 million investment to boost redevelopment there as a striking welcome to our City. Our library is growing, work continues for Metro getting commuter rail to our City along 90, and soon a bus network to move our citizens to and from work and school,” he said. Allen and Jane are First United Methodist Church members where they raised their children including a daughter who serves as a local teacher and
are grateful Missouri City remains where their children and grandchildren want to visit. Owen earned degrees from Stephen F. Austin and the SMU – Graduate School of Finance and Banking.
