HPL Hosts an Afternoon Reception for Library Leaders To Mark the 2012 Texas Library Association’s (TLA) Annual Conference in Houston

Our annual Summer Reading Program, generously sponsored by the John P. McGovern Foundation, started June 1st. All children up to the age of 18 are eligible to participate. We offer hundreds of great programs, and the opportunity to win a free book, tickets to see the Houston Astros and the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus, and more! Join us as we strike out boredom with Summer Reading! For more information, please see page 7. Summer Reading isn’t just for kids, though. We also offer an Adult Summer Reading Club. The club is a free online club open to adults 18 and up. Read books in any format (print, electronic, or audio), record them in your online reading log, and you are eligible for a monthly drawing to win a Kindle Fire! See page 7 for more information. Speaking of reading, I am very happy to announce this year’s book selection for the 2nd Annual Gulf Coast Reads event. Gulf Coast Reads is a regional reading event sponsored by nine area library systems, local book clubs and other partners. The goal is to bring together people from all over the Gulf Coast Region to read and discuss the same book at the same time. This year’s selection is Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, by Jonathan Safran Foer, who will be making a visit to HPL. For more information about the program, please see page 10. Finally, I am excited to announce the availability of HPL’s mobile app! Now you can take HPL with you wherever you go, as long as you have your mobile device and our new app. Check our catalog, access your account, place holds, renew your items, and more - no matter where you are! For more information, please see page 4. Just one more way that HPL is linking YOU to the world!

HPL NEWS Re-imagining the Central Library Plaza

FOCUS ON…Kevin McNeilly

Kevin McNeilly is a Rice University Masters in Business Administration (MBA) candidate, and a participating student in the Jones School Board Fellows Program which matches students with Houston community based nonprofit organizations to serve as non-voting board members. McNeilly was matched with the Friends of the Houston Public Library because of his passionate interest in books and libraries. He has been serving as a volunteer and as a member the Friends Board for more than six months. His mother, an English teacher, made books a part of his life, so for him being part of the Friends was the perfect fit. McNeilly says, “I enjoy being a part of this organization because everyone cares deeply about HPL, and is working to ensure that the City of Houston has the best library system to fill the needs of the community.” McNeilly participated in the Friends of HPL’s Annual Book Sale event where he sorted books and helped customers. He was impressed to hear that it took a whole year and lots of volunteer hours to offer an event where the community could buy quality books at affordable prices. McNeilly admits that working with the Friends has provided him with better leadership skills and experience that will help him in establishing long-term relationships in future endeavors. He says, “Because of my personal experiences and what I have gained with this organization, I will be encouraging everyone that I can to become a volunteer for the Friends of HPL.”

The Houston Public Library recently invited community members to participate in a Placemaking Workshop for the Central Library Plaza. This is a project that will help transform the Central Library Plaza into a vibrant, exciting, active public space, and make it a downtown destination for people of all ages and backgrounds. This workshop was a fun, indoor/ outdoor interactive session to brainstorm on the potential of the space.

McNeilly’s favorite writer is Malcom Gladwell, author of Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking, because he writes about things that people think they understand but really don’t. His stories are about perceptions and other perspectives. He also just finished reading Driving Over Lemons, by Chris Stewart.

Thanks to the generous support from the Downtown Redevelopment Authority and Reinvestment Zone Number Three, HPL is able to engage Project for Public Spaces to help the Library develop a well-conceived and managed re-imagined public space. Such a space could provide a platform for programs and events on the plaza and could even help positively activate this area of downtown. We will keep you updated on the results of the workshop.

For information on Friends of the Houston Public Library or to become a volunteer visit www.friendsofhpl.org or call 832-393-1387.

Houston Public Library Celebrates Graduation of WeCAN Works’ Houston High School Students HPL celebrated the second class of high school students to participate in the innovative WeCAN Works Track I component. The John P. McGovern Foundation Summer Reading Program When Dr. John P. McGovern was asked to help build the Stella Link neighborhood library and put his well-known name on it he quickly responded that he would give personally and from the foundation he created in support of our city. The well-known Houston allergist, also known as a renaissance man by many of his friends, loved libraries. He spent a great deal of his childhood in libraries and felt libraries made a difference in his life. The John P. McGovern Foundation established by Dr. John McGovern continues to support the Houston Public Library and its programs that remain free to the community and continue to make a difference in lives – for free, every day that they are open.

An Afternoon with Drs. Robert E. & Jean Nelson Galloway June 23 | 3PM - 4:30PM

For the past two years, the John P. McGovern Foundation has fully supported the Houston Public Library’s Summer Reading Program, making it possible for children of all ages to be encouraged and rewarded for their commitment to literacy. It has been welldocumented that a summer vacation without reading has a detrimental effect on literacy skills. HPL’s Summer Reading Program engages our community members to enhance their skills with fun and innovative programming. The thousands of children who participate enjoy programs ranging from authors reading aloud to circus programs and craft activities – all of which encourage participants to use their reading skills, imagination and creativity.

The African American Library at the Gregory School 1300 Victor Street, 77019 | 832-393-1440

Please join us in celebrating Juneteenth, as authors Drs. Robert and Jean Galloway discuss and sign their book, The Unity of Woman: Naturally African - The Unity of Woman, Nature and African Sculptured Form. The female is the center for the home, community and society... the foundation of all humanity. This book combines African art, photos and sculpture with common-sense, often humorous, but always thought-provoking African proverbs. The purpose of this book is to empower readers — especially those of the feminine gender — and help them recognize their common roots, future potential and understand the true meaning of “Sankofa” ... “You cannot go forward unless you first look back to where you have come from.”

Thanks to the John P. McGovern Foundation, everyone who completes the program gets to choose a book – it is not pre-chosen. Each reader looks at the hundreds of available titles and takes home a book of his or her choice. The gift of reading that allowed Dr. McGovern to become a leader in not only our community, but in the world, continues in every single Houston Public Library throughout the summer for free.

HPL EXHIBITS

The Color of Life

Works by Leon and Molly Bee Collins For decades there have been ongoing discussions of the distinctions between high and low art— formally educated artists versus the expressions of the untrained. Although there are differences between the two, the underlying truth is that people are drawn to art that uplifts their hearts, minds and spirits. This is true of Leon and Molly Bee Collins. Their work evokes motion through a mixture of beautiful colors, history and folklore. As Leon says, “Anyone can put down a lump of money at a school and call themselves an artist, but true art comes from your heart...” In their aptly-named studio, Color of Life in downtown Navasota, Texas, this father and daughter pair creates original art that grows straight out of the rich soil of the Brazos River. The painting of cotton fields, family and southern culture are portrayed with joy and empathy. As true folklorists, Leon and Molly Bee Collins, it is clear these stories on canvas are shared by artists who know and love their roots. This exhibition is generously supported by: City of Houston, Houston Public Library, and Rice University/Houston Enriches Rice Education.

Faces, Places and Spaces

June 9, 2012- September 1, 2012 Houston Public Library - Julia Ideson Building 550 McKinney, Houston, TX 77002 During the 1880s, the use of glass as a transparent and stable base for dry photographic emulsions replaced the collodion wet plate process. Glass was the first widely implemented medium used to create a transparent photographic negative. The end product became known as the glass plate negative and became obsolete as the camera and the photograph processes evolved over time. Commonly used into the 1920s, glass plate negatives prefigured the more durable, affordable, and familiar flexible film negative. The Houston Metropolitan Research Center (HMRC) is home to thousands of glass plate negatives capturing Houston and its citizens from the late 1800s. Although the majority of the images are an assortment of studio portraits, street scenes, and residences, other subjects and places are also represented. Selected from a variety of HMRC collections, the negatives reveal a visual cross-section of Houston citizenry and scenes representing the first century of the city’s history. These distinctive negatives are rare, fragile, and irreplaceable historical artifacts. To safeguard against damage, we have taken some of these images and reproduced them in a contemporary light box installation illuminating the space. The exhibition Faces, Places & Spaces, explores the glass plate negative in a contemporary context, demonstrating its enduring value as a documentary and aesthetic form.
