Celebrating Latino Literature and Culture in the Bayou City Books • Art • Culture • Community

Saturday, September 15, 2012 | 11 AM - 4 PM Houston Public Library | Central Library Plaza 500 McKinney St., 77002

Hispanic Heritage Month Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.

Houston Librofest is a book and arts festival for the general public that highlights Hispanic writers and showcases the vibrant culture of the Latino community through storytelling, writing workshops, book giveaways, and crafts and performances for children and adults. FEATURED AUTHORS: The inaugural event will feature a lineup of acclaimed poets and writers including Gwendolyn Zepeda, Claudia Kolker, Javier O. Huerta, and Sarah Cortez.

Attendees will also enjoy performances by local folkloric dancers and musicians, as well as a puppet show, a clown, and exhibits by Houston arts organizations. This event is free and open to the public . For more information about specific events and programs, please visit our website at www.houstonlibrary.org/hhm or call 832-393-1313.

The 2012 John P. McGovern Foundation Summer Reading Program Struck-Out Boredom It might have been a long, sizzling Houston summer, but children and teens stayed cool, striking out boredom by participating in HPL’s free 2012 John P. McGovern Foundation Summer Reading Program. More than 12,000 children and teens participated in the program, reading great books, maintaining their reading level between school years, and winning fun prizes. A highlight of HPL’s program is its commitment to promoting the love of reading. Thanks to the generosity of the John P. McGovern Foundation, all participants who read a minimum of ten books were given one free book to take home to add to - or start - their own personal library! Over 6,000 participants read over 20 books during the two-month program. Other prizes included coupons for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, vouchers for a free ticket to a Houston Astros game, and drawings for gaming devices and other electronics. Participants also participated in over 300 free programs, learning about reptiles, birds, magic, science, theatre, art, music, dance and much more. HPL thanks the John P. McGovern Foundation and our other sponsors, partners and program presenters for helping make this year’s program a fun-filled and educational event for Houston’s children and teens.

HPL EXHIBITS

The Tuskegee Airmen: The Segregated Skies of World War II September 15, 2012- January 5, 2013

The African American Library at the Gregory School | 1300 Victor St., 77019 832-393-1440 Who were the Tuskegee Airmen? The Tuskegee Airmen were the first AfricanAmerican military aviators in the United States armed forces. They became known as the “Tuskegee Airmen” because many of the them received their primary, basic, and advanced pilot training in the city of Tuskegee, Alabama. During World War II, African Americans in many U.S. states were still subject to racism and segregation. Much of the federal government, including the American military, was also racially segregated and the Tuskegee Airmen were subjected to racial discrimination, both within and outside the army. They trained in overcrowded classrooms, airstrips, and with old equipment. Despite these hardships they trained, flew with distinction and proved to be world class pilots. The Airmen flew escort missions and proved that African Americans could fight and protect as well as any other U.S. pilot or soldier. From these missions the men earned the nickname “Red Tail Angels” since the bombers considered their escorts “angels” and the red paint on the propeller and tail of their planes. In part because of the Tuskegee Airmen’s success, President Truman integrated the armed forces in 1948. The Tuskegee Airmen: The Segregated Skies of World War II is a traveling exhibit that provides an overview of the challenges and triumphs of the Tuskegee Airmen. The exhibition was created by The Museum of History and Holocaust Education at Kennesaw State University. This free exhibit is on view September 15, 2012 through January 5, 2013.

Rice Institute: Planning, Constructing, Opening, and the First Ten Years September 29, 2012- November 17, 2012

Houston Public Library | Julia Ideson Building | 550 McKinney, 77002 832-393-1662 “Houston now boasts one of the greatest foundations ever established in the history of the world, one that is to endure for all time and expand with the ages. It is to the welfare of this generation and all others to follow to which the Rice Institute and all its works are forever dedicated. It will give to the Houston of the future thousands of men and women of greater culture, broader vision, steadier ideals, swifter and keener judgments, greater efficiency and truer conceptions of duty and life than this generation can boast.” With this statement, from an October issue of the Houston Post in 1912, rings the bell for the newly opened Rice Institute. Rice Institute, later renamed Rice University, has maintained its reputation as one of the most highly accredited institutions in the country since its opening one hundred years ago this year. In collaboration with Rice University and in celebration of its centennial, this exhibition will reflect on the processes put into the institution being founded and the first ten years of educating. The exhibition is generously supported by Rice University, City of Houston and Houston Public Library. This free exhibit is on view September 29, 2012 through November 17, 2012. HPL NEWS

FOCUS ON…The Taverna Family

Reading Program and this year was no exception. The children really enjoyed all the programs they attended, but most especially they liked seeing the snakes that Clint “The Snake Man” brought to the Library. Nine year old Gabriela says she loves to read. For the 2012 Summer Reading Program she read more than 30 books. She was very excited about that, because she got to receive some cool incentives like books to take home, circus tickets, Astros tickets, and was entered in a grand drawing for an iPod Touch just for reading. Her favorite book is the The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares. She is now reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K Rowling. Enzo is five and likes for mom to read him superhero books. He has many favorites so it’s difficult for him to say which one he likes best, but for many reasons Power Rangers and Star Wars: The Clone Wars stand out. He also liked the incentives he got!

Three years ago, the Taverna family moved to Houston and the first place they discovered was the Heights Neighborhood Library. Megan Taverna said, “We have been coming to the Heights Neighborhood Library since we got to Houston. It’s really a fun place to bring my children and it was also a great way for us to start meeting people.” Every summer the Taverna’s have gone to the Library to participate in the John P. McGovern Foundation’s Summer

For Megan, who once worked as a reference librarian associate in the New Orleans Public Library and as a business librarian at the Tulane University Library says, “I think Summer Reading Program really helps kids improve their reading skills before going back to school. For me, reading is the basis for everything in life. You can do math, learn to cook, and more. Reading links you to the world and it becomes your oyster as they say. I recommend this program and the Library to all parents.
