Enjoy the Summer at Houston Public Library SUMMER 2013

Go Under Cover during this year’s John P. McGovern Summer Reading Program!

at Houston Public Library

Did you know that Houston Public Library has offered a version of its Summer Reading Program since the 1920’s?

JUNE 1 − AUGUST 1. 2013

Each June and July thousands of children and their families join HPL for reading, entertaining and educational programs, and the opportunity to receive incentives and prizes for their participation. Now generously sponsored by the John P. McGovern Foundation, the Summer Reading Program remains one of our most popular offerings. The program is more than just fun and games, however. You might have heard of the “summer slide” - the idea that students, especially young readers, regress during summer vacation. Studies now show that participation in a summer reading program can help stop this “summer slide.” A recent study conducted by Dominican University, in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins University Center for Summer Learning, found that summer reading programs prepare students to come to school ready to learn and more enthusiastic about reading. Our own surveys indicate that the majority of respondents say that their child’s enjoyment of reading, reading skill, and amount of reading all increased as a result of their participation in our Summer Reading Program. So please see page 4 for more information and join us as we Go Under Cover this summer! We will read some great books, give away some fantastic prizes and defeat the “summer slide”!

HPL NEWS

FOCUS ON… Gwendolyn Zepeda Houston has selected its first Poet Laureate, award-winning author and poet Gwendolyn Zepeda. She will represent the city by creating excitement about poetry through outreach programs, share her love of poetry through teaching, and will provide content to the Houston Poet Laureate Program webpage. She will serve a term of two years, April 2013 through April 2015. The Houston Poet Laureate Program is a partnership between the City of Houston, Houston Public Library, Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs, and Houston Arts Alliance.

For more information about the Houston Poet Laureate Program visit www.houstonlibrary.org/houston-poet-laureate. We asked Gwendolyn to share her thoughts about poems and poetry.

When did you become interested in poetry?

When I was in the third grade there was a poetry contest that I didn’t win. But, I was so impressed with the winner that it made me start writing poems for friends and myself all the time. As the years went by I just kept writing without publishing any of them. I can’t even remember how many poems I’ve written.

What inspires you to write a poem?

Usually, they are about anything that evokes strong emotions in me. Something will make me feel angry, nostalgic, joyful, or sad and I’ll quickly write a poem on my smart phone. I used to carry a note pad, but now it’s much easier to use my phone.

How do you describe poetry to people that may not be familiar with it?

Poetry is the quickest and easiest way to explain a feeling in words. But it can range from very simple to extremely complex.

Restoration of Service Hours! Thanks to the support of Mayor Parker and Houston’s City Council, HPL is restoring Saturday service hours to 14 Neighborhood Libraries and returning the Central Library to seven-dayper-week service! You will now have Saturday service at 41 locations across the city, and Sunday service at our flagship location, the Central Library. The new hours will go into effect between April 1st and June 30th, as new staff are hired and trained. Some locations are already up and operating!

VISIT:

www.houstonlibrary.org/ new-library-hours-2013 for the latest information.

What is your favorite poem and why?

Two of my favorite poems are Louise Glück’s Mythic Fragment and Frank O’Hara’s poem, Lana Turner Has Collapsed! I like Glück because of the issues she chooses to write about and O’Hara because his style is very free but still readable.

What are you reading now?

I’m been carrying around two collections from poets I know: Andrew Kozma’s City of Regret, Javier Huerta’s American Copia: An Immigrant Epic, plus George Saunders’ latest short story collection Tenth of December, and reading from each of them bit by bit. For more from Gwendolyn, please see the full interview at http://www.houstonlibrary.org/houston-poet-laureate.

Jarrett Krosoczka, Author of the Lunch Lady Graphic Novel Series Saturday, May 4, 2013 is HPL’s 4th Annual Children’s Book Celebration. This year’s featured author is Jarrett Krosoczka, author of the Lunch Lady graphic novel series and many picture books, including Punk Farm and Punk Farm on Tour. His newest book is Platypus Police Squad: The Frog Who Croaked, available May 7, 2013. Mr. Krosoczka will be at HPL to talk about his books, his art, his writing, and more. Here is a taste of what to expect: Q. Where did the Lunch Lady idea come from? A. Back in the fall of 2001, I was visiting my childhood elementary school in celebration of my first published book. While there, I ran into Jeannie, the beloved lunch lady of my youth--she was still serving lunch every day! I struck up a conversation with her and she told me all about her grandkids. It blew my mind! My lunch lady had a life outside of school? She didn’t live in the kitchen with the spatulas so I set off to write a book about the secret lives of lunch ladies. Q. Did the decision to do a graphic novel series come before or after the idea for Lunch Lady formed? A. I played with different variations of my Lunch Lady story for about three years before I came to the conclusion that the graphic novel format would be the best way to tell this story. Lunch Lady had false starts as a picture book, a chapter book, even an animated television show at one point. But when I reillustrated a comic that I had drawn in the 5th grade for Guys Write for Guys Read, I knew this idea I had knocking around about a crime-fighting lunch lady needed to be a graphic novel. Q. How long does it take to write one Lunch Lady book from beginning to end? A. Every book takes roughly a year, with the majority of that time spent on revising the story. Q. What is your favorite Lunch Lady gadget? A. I don’t have many favorites amongst my work. Like a good father, I love all of my kids the same. But my most favorite gadget is the Fish Stick Nunchucks! Q. How was the experience of writing Platypus Police Squad different than writing Lunch Lady? A. I compare writing picture books and graphic novels to comparing green apples and red apples. Both are telling stories with words and pictures, but with different lengths and depths of story. A chapter book is like a pineapple. Even though there is a lot of artwork, it all starts with the text. Prose is king in the realm of chapter books, regardless of how many pictures you may have. So for this visual thinker, it was a much greater challenge to write my first chapter book!

Negro Spirituals: A Triple Middle Passage January 19, 2013 - May 25, 2013

The African American Library at the Gregory School | 1300 Victor St., 77019 Negro Spirituals: A Triple Middle Passage is an exhibition of the works of Harvey Johnson, a Houston artist and retired member of the faculty at Texas Southern University. Mr. Johnson’s work, which he calls his poetry, explores African ancestral culture and its influence on the African community in America. We recently asked Mr. Johnson to tell us a little about what he hopes visitors will see when they view Negro Spirituals: A Triple Middle Passage. “One of the thoughts I have is that I hope they see the profound love I have for my people. As a result, I trust they will be motivated to find, if they have not already, their own purpose for which they are here in this life. I also want them to see that while Negro Spirituals : A Triple Middle Passage speaks, in part, of a holocaust and pathos, there is also evidence of a cryptic language which gives all of us a complex meaning of the sacred laws governing the order of the universe in its ever evolving cycles of life and transformation. One of these spirituals is We Are Climbing Jacob’s Ladder. In the sacred text of the African Book Of The Coming Forth By Day And By Night, you can see the ladder that Osiris ascended from earth to heaven. Lastly, I hope that Negro Spirituals : A Triple Middle Passage communicates to the young people that BEING African has more to do with consciousness than color or nationality. It should be a liberating feeling of identification, honor, and pride rather than a burden of shame and denial”. You can read more from this short interview on our website at www.houstonlibrary.org/negro-spirituals, and you can meet Mr. Johnson in person on Saturday, May 25, 2013, at 2 p.m., when he appears as part of our Lunch with a Legacy series at the African American Library at the Gregory School, 1300 Victor Street, 77019.
