Spring into Action @ HPL Welcome to the latest edition of the link! This edition, like your library, is packed with information on a wide variety of programs, resources and services we hope you will find fun, exiting and useful. We are really excited about two of our signature reading programs and invite you to join the fun. First up is our 2nd Annual Books Alive! Children’s Book Celebration, scheduled for Saturday, May 14th at the Central Library. Last year’s event was a huge success, bringing in over 400 people to the festivities. This year’s featured author is Laura Numeroff, author of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and the related series, as well as other treasured children’s books. For more information on this full day of fun, please see page 4. The celebration of reading doesn’t stop there, though. June brings our annual Summer Reading Program. This year we are pleased to announce a major new supporter of the program, the John P. McGovern Foundation. Thanks to their generosity, this year’s Summer Reading Program will be bigger and better than ever. For more information on how to register, please see page 5. And we are pleased to announce that we also have a Summer Reading Club for adults, complete with prizes! We know that many of you are enjoying the world of ebooks and readers such as the Nook, the Sony Reader and others. As always, HPL is your link! Find out how to access our growing audiobook and ebook collection in the Tech It section, beginning on page 6. Finally, May brings two important events in support of HPL. First, on Sunday, May 1st, the Houston Public Library Foundation is hosting their annual Party in the Stacks fundraiser. This year’s party is entitled Blues and Blue Jeans and will be held at the African American Library at the Gregory School. Also in May is the Friends of the Houston Public Library’s 33rd Annual Book Sale, which takes place May 13-15 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Proceeds from both of these events help support the work we do here at HPL. HPL NEW page 2/3

Focus on...Diane Durbin, President Friends of the Houston Public Library

I have been a huge fan of libraries ever since I can remember. When I was a child, my father, who was a college professor, introduced me to the campus library. It was beautiful and I was hooked! I became a school librarian and worked more than 23 years helping many students. During that time, I discovered the Friends of the Houston Public Library and became a volunteer. Later, I served on the Board of the Friends for six years. I am currently President of the organization; I have held this position for the past six years. As an advocate for the Library, I want people in our community to know that it is more important than ever. It’s the only place where they can get a free education using all the resources and services the library has to offer, and it’s not just for adults but also for children and teens. Right now, I’m finishing Tender at the Bone, a memoir by Ruth Reichl, a well known food critic and PBS personality. I also have a collection of non-fiction books such as: Brown vs. Board of Education, World of Our Fathers, and Crossing Over.

As President of the Friends of the Houston Public Library, I invite the community to our 33rd Annual Book Sale taking place May 13 – 15, 2011 at the George Brown Convention Center. We also have an expanded book sale online. These are 1st edition type books that are very valuable. All proceeds from the sales go to the Houston Public Library. For more details visit www.friendsofhpl.org or call 832-393-1387. I’m also asking the community to visit and show its support to the Houston Public Library, a city institution that has offered our families many free services for over 100 years.

Original Biggers Drawing Donated to HPL

Oak Forest Re-Opening

Houston Public Library is pleased to announce the re-opening of the Oak Forest Neighborhood Library! The recently renovated facility will re-open to serve the community on Monday, April 18th.

Gerald B. Smith, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Smith, Graham & Company Investment Advisors, L.P. donated “Our Future,” an original Dr. John Biggers drawing circa 1963 – 1983 to the Houston Public Library, African American Library at the Gregory School on March 31, 2011. Dr. Rhea Brown Lawson, Director of the Houston Public Library, and Susan Bischoff, President of the Houston Public Library Foundation, accepted this valuable donation on behalf of HPL. Biggers previously donated the mural “Birth from the Sea”, circa 1964-66, to the W.L. Johnson Neighborhood Library. The drawing will be on permanent display at The African American Library at the Gregory School (1300 Victor St., 77019).

Highlights of the renovation include: the expansion of the building to more than 12,000 square feet, increasing its size by fifty percent; the creation of three distinct reading rooms; one each for children, teens, and adults; and two new brick and glass extensions that surround an outdoor deck with benches shaded by mature pine trees. We hope you will take the time to stop by and visit this beautiful mid-century style facility located at 1349 West 43rd Street, 77018. For more information about the Oak Forest Neighborhood Library, call 832-393-1960, or visit www.houstonlibrary.org.

Biggers (1924-2001), was an internationally-acclaimed painter, sculptor, teacher, philosopher and art professor at Texas Southern University. -3-

Ebooks Questions and Answers Ebooks and audio books have become a popular way to enjoy your latest novel or manual. And with new technology comes new questions. Here are a few questions and answers about the use of ebooks at our library.

#1: Where do I find downloadable eBooks? On the library’s front page, click Downloads (found under the red box that says E-Library). On the following page you will see links to both NetLibrary and OverDrive. OverDrive is the better option if you are looking for best sellers; NetLibrary is a good option if you want to easily view eBooks on your computer without downloading anything. Our collection of eBooks is growing, so if you don’t find what you’re looking for right now, check back periodically to see if it might have been added. #2: Will the library’s eBooks work on my Kindle? Sorry, but no. The Kindle doesn’t support the Adobe EPUB format, which is the format our eBook providers use. Any eReader that uses the Adobe EPUB format should work. The most popular compatible devices are the Barnes & Noble Nook and the Sony Reader. #3: What about the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch? Other smartphones? You will need to download the Overdrive Media Console from your device’s app store, and then you can download the books directly to your device, without having to connect to a computer. Need more help? You can call us at 832-393-1313 or chat using our info 24/7 chat service (www.houstonlibrary.org/askalibrarian). OverDrive also has a handy help page. Look for the MyHelp! image in the OverDrive Digital Media Catalog.

Top Audiobooks Downloads Houston Public Library and its partners NetLibrary and Overdrive are excited to offer downloadable ebooks, audiobooks, and video to our customers. HPL EXHIBITS

The Whole World Was Watching Now until August 20, 2011

The African American Library at the Gregory School 1300 Victor Street | Houston, TX, 77019 The exhibit chronicles a crucial period in American social and political history showing both the struggle and victories of those fighting for Civil Rights in the 1960s. Poignant and deeply profound, the photographs in this exhibition portray historical turning points such as the Freedom Rides to the Deep South, the March on Washington, and the Selma-to-Montgomery March. The exhibit features 44 images by six photographers. The Civil Rights Movement is one of the most significant periods in American history. It changed an America that tolerated racism and the restraint of African Americans to one that recognized the rights and humanity of all its citizens regardless of color or race as stated in its founding documents.
