STATISTICAL DEFINITIONS The 2010 Library Information Sheets consist of two pages per branch. The first page covers information about the facility and demographic makeup of the geographic community in which the library operates. The second page shows usage statistics, trends, rankings and customer feedback from our most recent survey. Libraries are grouped by geographic zones. Demographic data for the City of Houston as a whole is used for the Central/ Special Collections libraries.

Public Access Computers includes the most current number of desktop and laptop computers available at a given library. This figure was provided by HPL IT and does not include computers available in a computer lab or staff computers. Schools include those institutions which appear in the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics database. The list does not necessarily include all schools operating within a library’s service area.

Circulation is electronically counted each month and includes all material types.

Service Areas define the primary geographic community that a library serves and are comprised of Census tracts.

Circulation per Service Hour (calculated by dividing the total annual circulation of all materials with the annual number of service hours) more accurately measures how heavily a library collection is being used, regardless of size. Regular circulation statistics are biased towards larger collections. For example, a large collection that is lightly used can often have higher circulation numbers than a smaller collection that is used more intensely.

Service Area Demographics (bottom half of first page) were generated using Library Decision software, which extrapolates data from the 2000 Census.

Ethnicity categories are definitions used by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Service Contacts is a measure used to capture a library’s total usage, and is an indicator of how busy and how deeply a library is being used. It is calculated by adding yearly visitor estimate, circulation, reference questions, directional questions, in-house material use, computer users and program attendance. While Service Contacts offers a glimpse into how broadly a library is being used, Service Contacts per Service Hour captures the intensity of a library’s foot traffic.

Facility information (top half of page one) and Facility status reflect the most current information available at the time of printing.

Service Hours per Week includes scheduled hours of operation during a typical week, excluding holidays or other closures.

Holdings include all materials (circulating and non-circulating) at a given branch and reflect the FY08 annual number.

Square Footage (or net square footage) represents public space.

Computer Users is electronically counted each month and tallies the number of logins at each terminal. Education reflects achievement level of the adult population.

Trending (bottom half of page two) includes annual figures for major output measures for the past five years. The graphs offer insight into potential patterns of usage.

Language Spoken at Home reflects U.S. Census categories and indicates households in which members (14 years old and older) have at least some difficulty with English. “Other I-E” denotes Other Indo-European Languages.

Usage Statistics (top half of page two) are provided for the most recent fiscal year (FY09).

Maps of Library Locations were generated using Google maps. Meeting Room Capacity based on General Services Department’s 2007 audit. If two figures are listed, then two meeting rooms are available for use.

Use per Computer is calculated by dividing the annual number of computer users of a given library with the number of public access computers.

Percentages equaling .5% and above are rounded up, below .5% are rounded down. In some instances rounding causes total percentages in a category to equal slightly more than 100%.

Visitor numbers are counted monthly using 3M security gates. This method has replaced our previous sampling method (known as Door Counts).

Photos of libraries were provided by library managers or from photos already on file with the Planning & Facilities Division. 100
