Women’s History Month @ HPL March is Women’s History Month, and the Houston Public Library is proud to join in the celebration. This is, in part, because your library offers a wide variety of materials and resources about the role played by women in America’s history and in contemporary society. It is also because the Houston Public Library exists because of the efforts of two groups of dedicated women with a vision. While the Houston Lyceum was organized in 1854, it was a membership organization, with membership limited to white males. This remained the case until the late 1880’s, when the Lyceum opened its membership to women. The rest, as they say, is history. Two groups specifically, the Ladies’ Reading Club and the Woman’s Club of Houston, rallied around the Lyceum and promoted the need for a free public library. The Ladies’ Reading Club is credited with securing annual funding from the City of Houston for the maintenance of a library in 1899. The Woman’s Club of Houston, led by Belle Sherman Kendall, after whom our newly-renovated Kendall Neighborhood Library and Community Center is named, requested and received a $50,000 grant from industrialist Andrew Carnegie that same year to erect a library building. One of Mr. Carnegie’s requirements was that the City provide a building site near the business district or a park. Again, the women of Houston came to the rescue. Several women’s clubs came together to form the City Federation of Women’s Clubs, which helped raise funds to purchase the plot of land on which the City’s first public library was built. That library, the Houston Lyceum and Carnegie Library, stood at the corner of Travis Street and McKinney Avenue and served as the City’s main library until 1926*. TEENS page 2 Teen Tech Month Reel Teen Film Festival

The first City Librarian was Julia Ideson, who served as the director of the library for 42 years. Her name now graces the building that replaced the Houston Lyceum and Carnegie Library – the Julia Ideson Building, part of our Central Library in downtown Houston. This building is currently undergoing a major renovation and expansion, adding a state-of-the-art, environmentally sensitive archival wing to the original 1926 building. The fundraising for this project is being led by yet another group of strong Houston women (and men) with a vision, the Julia Ideson Library Preservation Partners. (www. ideson.org) The Julia Ideson Building is just one of 11 buildings in the Houston Public Library system named for women who have made significant contributions to the life of our City. Please see http://www.houstonlibrary.org/librarys-namedbuildings for more information on these women and how they helped move Houston forward. As the Director of the Houston Public Library, I am grateful to all of these women for their dedication, determination and vision. I hope you will honor their efforts by visiting one of the 41 Houston Public Library locations and enjoying the free access to books, electronic resources, programs and other services offered by HPL. All the Best,

Dr. Rhea Brown Lawson, Director *As recounted by local historian Betty Trapp Chapman in her book, “100 Years-100 Stories: Houston Public Library 1904-2004”.

Julia Ideson was born July 15, 1880, in Hastings, Nebraska. At the age of twelve her family moved to Houston. In 1899, she attended the University of Texas where she was a member of the first class offered in Library Science. In 1903, she was hired as the librarian for the new Houston Lyceum and Carnegie Library. Dedicated on March 2, 1904, the library resulted from Andrew Carnegie’s $50,000 gift to Houston in 1898. Ideson also served as president of the Texas Library Association from 1910-1911.

In 1929, Ideson was the first woman in Houston to be listed in Who’s Who in America. She was active not only in areas related to the library but also as a suffragette. She worked with groups that brought speakers to the city, providing information on topics that were very controversial at that time, such as birth control. By Rodalind Miles

Ideson was director of the Houston Public Library for 42 years. She died at the age of 65. More than six years after her death, by order of City Council, the Central Library building was renamed in her honor. Today the grand Spanish Revival style building situated across from City Hall houses the Houston Metropolitan Research Center, consisting of the Archives & Manuscripts Department, the Texas & Local History Department, and Special Collections.
