Houston Public Library New Hours of Operation
Welcome to the May edition of the link!
This month, Houston Public Library continues its recognition and support of the ethnic and cultural diversity that makes Houston such an exciting place to live by celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. Please see page 4 and 5 for book selections, resources, and programs that will provide you with information about Asian Pacific American culture and history.
May also brings us Houston Public Library’s first annual Children’s Book Celebration. Books Alive! 2010: From Fables to Fantasy takes place from May 8th through May 15th and features appearances by two award-winning children’s authors, T.A. Barron and Jerry Pinkney. Please see page 3 for more information about this exciting event. Special thanks to our friends at the Woman’s Club of Houston for their generous support of the Children’s Book Celebration.
Like many libraries across the state and nation, Houston Public Library, in an effort to better align our services with our current budget and staff resources, implemented a reduction in service hours in April, 2010. We want you to know that we are carefully listening to your comments and suggestions regarding the days and hours the Library is open for service. We are actively monitoring the impact of these changes on library usage and we will make adjustments if necessary within the constraints of our budget. We remain committed to providing the high level of customer service you expect from the Houston Public Library. Please see page 8 for a list of hours of operation, or visit our website at www.houstonlibrary.org.
We haven’t forgotten the grown ups! Page 6 showcases the many book clubs offered by Houston Public Library locations, and information about the upcoming appearance of author Francis Ray, part of our “An Evening With…” author series. Too busy to join a club or attend a reading? See page 7 for information about various online book communities! There is something for everyone at HPL. I hope you will join us in May for some culture, some fun, and many good books! 1st Annual Houston Public Library Children’s Book Celebration Saturday May 8 - May 15, 2010 www.houstonlibrary.org/bookcelebration

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Asian Pacific American Heritage Mont is a celebration of the culture and contributions of Asian and Pacific Islanders in the United States. The month of May holds significance for the Asian community. It is the month that the first Japanese immigrant was commemorated in the United States; the commemoration occurred May 7, 1843. It is also the month when the transcontinental railroad was completed (May 10, 1869). In addition, May 5 is honored as Children’s Day in many Asian cultures.
The Vine of Desire by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni After a year of living separate lives, Anju and Sudha are reunited and rekindle their friendship in America, a link that helps both women as they establish new relationships with their families and with men and women outside the Indian immigrant community.
Like many of our commemorative months, Asian Pacific American Heritage Month started out as Asian Pacific American Heritage Week in 1977. It wasn’t until 1992 that George H. W. Bush signed a law that extended the week celebration (signed into law by President Jimmy Carter) into a month.
The Gangster of Love by Jessica Tarahata Hagedorn The Gangster of Love chronicles the life and times of Rocky Rivera, a member of a dissolute rock band, and her sometimes boyfriend Elvis Chang, traditional mother, troubled brother, eccentric uncle, and unpredictable best friend.
This year’s theme is Lighting the Past, Present and Future. For more information on Asian culture in America or Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, visit: https://www.fapac.org.
