“Our motto is love at first bite,” Al explains. “I think people come here because they know they’re going to have a great meal every time. closed out the summer with a bang. The Heights seems be the next restaurant boomtown. September was met with the opening of KA Sushi, a trendy sushi and ramen spot that’s a much welcome addition to the neighborhood. In October, Treadsack restaurant group’s Hunky Dory Tavern began pumping out British-style fare created by Richard Knight, former chef of the beloved Feast. Hit it for hearth-fired côte de bœuf with bone marrow, and cake stand pork chop served with both mashed potatoes and fries. The group also went on to open the highly anticipated Thai eatery Foreign Correspondents in October and the Gulf Coast concept Bernadine’s at year’s end, both of which have exceeded their high expectations.
Over in River Oaks, Ford Fry’s State of Grace has been satisfying Houstonians with globally and locally inspired comfort eats, including dishes like twice-fried Korean chicken and whole roasted flounder with salsa verde.

Last year was a time of expansion, from tried-and-true restaurant groups introducing bright and fresh concepts to brand spanking new eateries and a few worthy imports. And with the way 2016 has been coming along, it looks as if our dining landscape is about to get that much more impressive. Let’s take a look at some of the most exciting new kids on the block: Last year started off strong with some newcomers that have since become local favorites. Midtown’s Oporto Fooding House & Wine, the sister restaurant of Greenway’s Oporto Wine Cafe, is one of them. The eatery has been stunning with Portuguese tapas kissed with Indian and Italian influences. Feast on gorgeously charred octopus, housemade linguiça sausage and spicy goan seafood curry. Other big openings included the part-bake shop, part-bar, partrestaurant and part-awesome Weights + Measures in Midtown (do yourself a favor and get the carrot pizza) and Big Eyed Fish, the brunch-tastic Southern comfort concept on Washington.

In May, B&B Butchers brought a New York-style steak game to Houston, and we’re better for it. At this charming butchery and steakhouse, meat is king. Get it in the form of the sinfully delicious thick-cut bacon appetizer, and wagyu from Gearhart Ranch, Kobe from Japan, and USDA Prime, all dry-aged and hand-cut daily inhouse. Of course, there are plenty of less meaty options as well, including the thoughtfully curated list of wines with which to wash it all down. Next, things got a little sweeter with Fluff Bake Bar opening up shop in Midtown, and we secured another pizza spot in Bollo Wood-Fired Pizza, where you’ll find more than just authentically prepared pies cooked from a VPN-certified wood-fired oven. Guests can also feast on local marinated beets, lobster ravioli with truffle butter, and double-cut pork chop marsala.
The year closed out with yet another restaurant-group opening, this time from Agricole Hospitality (of Revival Market and Coltivare fame). The whiskey bar and on-site taco truck concept Eight Row Flint has been keeping locals perfectly satiated. As luck would have it, 2016 has shown absolutely zero signs of slowing down. We’ve already seen the openings of street meat purveyors The Halal Guys, La Table (a remake of TABLE on Post Oak) and Cantonese eatery Ginger & Fork. We’re also looking forward to those in the works, including Conservatory, an underground beer garden and food hall that will open in the coming months in downtown; and a new outpost of NYC’s famous Shake Shack. Bring it on!
Over in Sharpstown, the owners of Tiger Den branched out with another hot concept: Mein Restaurant. The brighter restaurant focuses on Chinese fare and seriously good noodles made from scratch. Fruit and flower salad Summer was just as hot. Celebrated chef Randy Rucker’s Bramble amused with quality rustic ingredients in simple preparations like roast chicken and whole Gulf fish. In July, a star was born in Helen Greek Food & Wine. In just a short time, the restaurant has already gained national attention, earning a James Beard semifinalist nod for Best New Restaurant. That’s thanks to innovative takes on traditional Mediterranean fare — the gyro is made using beyond-tender marinated pork shoulder instead of the usual shaved mystery meat — and the second-largest Greek wine list in the country. SaltAir Seafood Kitchen’s remarkable fresh-from-the-sea plates, Izakaya’s inspired Japanese tapas and Heights eatery Southern Goods’ modern comfort food

By spring, Hugs & Donuts opened next door to Fat Cat Creamery after a successful Kickstarter campaign. Every bite of the shop’s freshly baked gourmet goodness feels like one big giant hug. Just as lovable? The second (in the Loop) location of Pizaro’s, which opened its doors to eager diners in Montrose. This time around, there’s a bigger dining room and an extra-colossal woodfired oven for slinging out hot and bubbling pizzas. Spring would
The fun continued with PESKA Seafood Culture opening in April. Young gun chef Omar Pereney may only be in his twenties, but he shows maturity through skillfully balanced ceviches and impeccable mains.
In November, Montrose got a new burger joint, aptly named The Burger Joint, in the old Little Bigs space. A joint venture between Shawn Bermudez of Royal Oak and food-truck guru Matthew Pak, the beefed-up spot keeps things fresh with local ingredients and handspun milkshakes. Just down the street, another food truck turned brick-and-mortar, Vietnamese hotspot Les Ba’Get, opened up shop.

In early March, North Italia opened its doors in the now-bustling BLVD Place. The restaurant offers locally influenced, modern Italian fare in the form of quality scratchmade pizzas, pastas, salads, and meat and seafood entrées. Go for dishes like the fig and prosciutto pizza, which sings with a light and airy crust and creamy goat cheese; and pillowy housemade ricotta gnocchi, rich and decadent with braised short rib — all of which you can take down alongside a well-appointed by-the-glass and bottle wine program. Later in March, Midtown got a taste of ramen realness with the opening of JINYA Ramen. Nothing feeds the mind, body and soul like slurping up noodles from JINYA’s perfectly porky, milky-white tonkotsu broth. Nothing.

But it wasn’t just Treadsack that was expanding. F.E.E.D. TX brought us Lee’s Fried Chicken & Donuts in October. The fastcasual eatery tweaked its chicken recipe after initial disappointing reviews, but we are happy to report the revamped edition of fried bird is quite excellent. It’s best enjoyed alongside yeasty Mexican chocolate donuts. F. E.E.D. also opened Little Liberty, the younger sister of Liberty Kitchen, in Rice Village earlier this year.
ouston’s culinary scene has been rising for years now, and with some recent James Beard semifinalist nods and media attention, it’s fair to say the nation has started to take notice. ometimes (as much as we hate to admit it), good things come from our neighbors to the north. As is the case with Fort Worth import Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, whose fast and fresh baja-style street eats and tasty drinks have gained a cult following in the Bayou City. And that’s to provide prompt, friendly, and efficient service, dish out unique, daily-made Mexican street eats in Texas-sized portions, and to do it all at fair prices in a fun, kitschy atmosphere that will have you coming back time and time again. But the real secret is in their crave-worthy combination of house sauce and feta. The addictive garlicky concoction gets drizzled over tacos and burritos stuffed with things like grilled and tempura-battered fish and shrimp, spicy shredded pork, meltingly tender brisket, and even zucchini, squash and carrots. When combined with crumbly, salty feta cheese, the bite, zip and tang you experience will knock your socks off. And out in Rosenberg, Old Main Street Bakery keeps crowds happy with some of the best fruit- and cream-filled kolaches around. Grab some of those, then take a crack at their awesome lineup of cupcakes and pastries as well. Of course, you can’t go wrong with a morning pick-me-up from OGs like Shipley Do-Nuts and the Kolache Factory. Both have been making Houstonians’ days better for years upon years (since 1936 and 1982, respectively).
With an emphasis on local ingredients, small-batch ice cream shoppe Fat Cat Creamery remains one of the sweetest in town. As does Cloud 10 Creamery, where you’ll find outYep. Life in Houston sure is sweet! side-the-box ice creams and sorbets in flavors like brown butter & peppercorn and Earl Grey with pomegranate. Wine Time From the beautiful to the eclectic, here’s where to unwind with a glass of grapes in Houston: 13 Celsius has become a Houston classic. The Europeaninspired wine bar offers a wide-ranging global selection curated and cared for by co-owner Mike Sammons and wine guru Adele Corrigan. Each of the more than 450 picks is as unique as it is refreshing.

hirsty yet? So are we. Thankfully, Houston is absolutely filled to the brim with wonderful drinking establishments. From old standbys making Houston proud to pretty young things with noteworthy beer, wine and cocktail programs, here’s the inside scoop on what’s going on in Houston’s beverage scene:
Cool Cocktails & Tinctures Treadsack restaurant group — known for new restaurants Foreign Correspondents, Hunky Dory and Bernadine’s — is on fire when it comes to drink programs (the food is pretty fantastic, too). All the group’s concepts are overseen by shining-star bar director Leslie Ross, while beverage director and advanced sommelier Travis Hinkle keeps an eye on the wine side. At Thai-focused Foreign Correspondents, no meal is complete without one of Ross’s coolly compelling cocktails. Start with the Thai chile-infused green chartreuse, lemongrass and gin number for which the restaurant is named, then make your way through the rest of the standout roster.
Of course, Anvil Bar & Refuge continues to offer one of the most outstanding bar programs in town (the bar’s James Beard semi-finalist nod only further proves that point). With Clumsy Butcher and drink mastermind Bobby Anvil behind the concept, the team takes painstaking care to maintain a list of 100 favorite classics that will quench any cocktail nerd’s

If you haven’t made your way over to EaDo’s 8th Wonder Brewery, you’ll want to. Because from the throwback cream ale Dome Faux’m to the Vietnamese coffee porter Rocket Fuel, the brews here are all impressive. The operation has upped its game with a taproom and revamped outdoor space, complete with picnic tables and cornhole. Head there on Thursdays, when $8 will get you a beer flight of four 4-ounce pours and a beer token to redeem for a full beer of your choosing. On weekends, things get rowdy with live music, the Eatsie Boys food truck and special events.
If you want whiskey with your wine, Public Services Wine & Whisky — from sommelier and wunderkind Justin Vann and the ever-talented Justin Yu — is the place for you. It’s located in the old Cotton Exchange building, and offers a boutique selection of hard-to-score Old World wines and whiskeys alongside snacks like house-made baloney, complete with smoked cheese spread and Ritz crackers. And for wine with dinner, Helen Greek Food & Wine is the “it” girl of the moment. The restaurant recently received a James Beard semi-finalist nod for best new restaurant thanks to its truly stellar fare and Greek wine list, the second-largest in the country. All of this just proves that it’s never a bad time to enjoy a tasty beverage in Houston.
The seriously creative Buffalo Bayou Brewing Company vows to “break the rules” and “offer a new narrative for how we think about beer.” And it’s working. Head to the brewery for flavor-forward Arnaldo Richards’ Picos Restaurant taps of White Raz, Blood Orange Buffalo Mi Novio and infused witbier Wit Da Eff. Other favorites include Katy’s No Label Brewing Co., Conroe’s Southern Star Brewing Company, Magnolia’s Lone Pint, and Houston all-stars Karbach Brewing Co. and the 20-plus-year veteran Saint Arnold Brewing Company. If you can’t make your way to the actual breweries, have no fear: Houston’s finest craft beer bars are tapping kegs and popping bottles all over town. Revelry on Richmond offers a rotating selection of 40 craft taps, with a nice emphasis on local, plus a robust collection of bottles. Fan favorite Petrol Station is the perfect place

Then there’s Eight Row Flint, the new icehouse from chef Ryan Pera and beverage master Morgan Weber’s Agricole Hospitality (Revival Market, Coltivare). Named after an ancient variety of heirloom corn cultivated by Native Americans (which just so happens to be the first corn ever distilled into whiskey), the concept focuses on — you guessed it — whiskey! There are about 100 kinds to choose from, including a lineup of hand-picked bourbons served straight from the barrel. Beer and soul-satisfying tacos from the onsite taco truck help to keep the good times rolling.
It’s a Craft Beer’s World (and we’re just living in it) It’s official: The craft beer scene has gone full throttle, all around the country, but, more important, at home. From local breweries to the city’s best beer bars, Houston’s most knowledgeable beer geeks are continuing to change the game and spread the good word, one hoppy brew at a time.

But for straight-up boozing, you’ll want to check out Treadsack’s new bar concepts: Johnny’s Gold Brick and Canard. At JGB, a ten count of flawlessly executed classic cocktails shares the playing field with pleasantly surprising oddball concoctions like the Margarita With A Big Red Float. Ross’s Canard just opened its doors, and with such talent leading the charge, we can promise that patrons are in good hands.

Even newcomers get in on the action. It didn’t take new-tothe-scene Beckrew Wine House long to make waves in Houston’s already expansive wine scene. Sip while you savor house charcuterie and pizza (which is free on Mondays and Tuesdays when you buy a bottle).
