hat the press labeled the beer summit (billed widely as “the audacity of hops”) came and went with barely a burp. Professor Gates suggests that he and Officer Crowley are now virtually drinking buddies, ready to go to the ballgame together. “I offered to get his kids into Harvard if he doesn’t arrest me again,” said Gates to laughter. But the teachable moment was never about Gates and Crowley alone. It was about something the society has to be very serious about: systemic racial profiling and the need to overcome it. When Obama was initially asked about the Gates arrest at his press conference, he committed truth. He said he didn’t know the details of the incident, that everyone knew that racial profiling was a widespread problem, and that the officer had acted “stupidly” in arresting Gates in his own home.
The Audacity of Hops: A Teachable Moment Lost All of that is clearly true, no matter how badly Gates was acting. But the president’s remarks were like a stick hitting a wasp’s nest, with the president getting stung by the response. Police spokesmen denounced him, reminding us of the risks that police take every day. The rabid right accused the president of hating white people. The president, hoping to focus on health care reform, moved to “walk back” his remarks and defuse the situation with the beer summit. But ensuring that a Harvard professor like Gates and a well-trained police officer like Crowley get along isn’t the point of what the president called a “teachable moment.” It isn’t that easy. It’s institutional -- banks that don’t lend, lenders that charge more, police that act differently The reality, as Obama stated in his speech to the NAACP, is that in each of these areas and elsewhere, despite all our progress on race, structural inequalities and the practices of racial profiling have profound and destructive impact on African-Americans, Latinos and other minorities today. For example, Lisa Madigan, the Illinois Attorney General, has just filed a suit against Wells Fargo for “discriminatory and illegal mortgage lending practices” that
“transformed our city’s predominantly African-American and Latino neighborhoods into ground zero for subprime lending.” The lawsuit accuses Wells Fargo of poor oversight that enabled its employees to steer blacks and Latinos into high cost loans. In 2007, about 49 percent of Well Fargo’s black borrowers and 25 percent of Latinos were sold a high cost loan in the Chicago area, in contrast to 15 percent of white borrowers. “(The foreclosure crisis) isn’t the natural result of a slumping economy, and it isn’t the result of homeowners taking on more than they can handle,” Madigan has stated. “This crisis is the direct result of unfair, deceptive and discriminatory lending practices by the lending industry.” This kind of profiling has had devastating effects in the African-American and Latino community. The most ambitious and hard working have seen their savings lost and their hopes dashed in the collapse of the housing bubble. But African-Americans and Latinos haven’t been the only victims. As people lost their homes, the value of homes in their neighborhoods plummeted. As home values declined, tax revenues declined. Schools lost teachers; road and sewer projects were put off. The entire community suffered. As America moves slowly toward being a nation made up of minorities, racial
profiling and structural discrimination will increasingly hurt everyone. We know that blacks are stopped more, arrested more, tried more, charged more and jailed more than whites with similar records. But as a result of imprisoning young African-American and Latino men and women, states across the country are spending billions warehousing nonviolent offenders while laying off teachers, firefighters and police. That makes no sense. The president had it right the first time. The Gates-Crowley incident was a teachable moment. It was a chance to talk seriously about both the progress we’ve made and the continuing racial profiling and structural inequalities that we must yet overcome. But a staged photo op of four guys being served beer by a waiter in the White House garden won’t get that done. We don’t need Gates and Crowley doing standup or docudramas on HBO. We need a national inquest about where we are, what changes must be made to move us forward. Most Americans seem eager to lower their voices and to have a serious conversation about race, pleased with the progress that Obama’s election represents. Valerie Jarrett: The President’s Most Trusted Adviser mentor is unmistakably the one voice, other than his wife, that the president relies on. “Over time, I think our relationship evolved to the point where she’s like a sibling to me. ... I trust her completely,” he told Draper. Yet what was also interesting about Draper’s article was the jealous nature of the men around the president. Now, I’m sure they will be quick to say that Draper focused on the negative aspects of their comments and not their effusive praise of Jarrett, but a read of the article makes it plain that there is friction there, which is nothing new in the White House. Axelrod came off as dismissive of Jarrett’s contributions by asserting that she has best served on dealing with “family issues.” In fact, there has been lingering resentment among some in the campaign going back to when Axelrod told a reporter with The Wall Street Journal that Jarrett was helpful to the campaign, namely with handling black media. I recall several officials inside and outside the campaign ticked off at the statement. Draper wrote that Emanuel was none too happy when he discovered that Jarrett discussed office space with former President George W. Bush’s chief of staff, Joshua Bolten, and actually confronted her. Emanuel called it a “misunderstanding,” but again, in Washington, power often is seen based on office size and proximity to the president, and it must drive the chief of staff nuts to know that his voice isn’t the last one the president relies on. Plouffe, who ran the president’s campaign, clearly was shown as not caring for Jarrett, telling Draper “she wasn’t

ive days after the 2008 presidential election, “60 Minutes’” Steve Kroft did a profile on “Obama’s brain trust,” four political veterans he reported to be the president-elect’s most important team members: David Plouffe, Robert Gibbs, David Axelrod and Anita Dunn. When the report aired, I immediately asked myself, “Where’s Valerie?” as in Valerie Jarrett, clearly the most important adviser to the president. After calling around, I discovered that Jarrett didn’t even know about the sit-down interview. As Arsenio Hall used to say on his show, “Things that make you go, ‘Hmm.’” But after reading The New York Times Magazine’s cover story on the 52-year-old Jarrett, a longtime Chicago business executive, it’s safe to say that that mistake never will happen again. Washington is all about power and the approximation to power. Who is in and who is out is the favorite parlor game among the D.C. elites, and the wide assumption by many was that when it came to whom the president relied on the most for advice and counsel, it would have been chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, senior adviser Axelrod and press secretary Gibbs. cago hack benefiting from a great friendship, they are trying to figure out how to get in her good graces. In the course of 8,100 words, writer Robert Draper made it clear that by her long association with President Barack Obama and Obama’s wife, Michelle, no one in the White House knows them better than Jarrett and that their longtime confidant and

terribly involved in strategic issues.” That’s pretty funny, considering she was knee-deep in the direction of the campaign but wasn’t at all greeted warmly by the officials at the top of the campaign. If anyone says the two got along well in the campaign, trust me; that person is lying. I’m sure the three of these gents are asking themselves, “What does the president think about the article?” The last thing they want is the boss to sense their dismissal of his most trusted adviser. Frankly, it’s smart for President Obama -- or any politician -- to have someone as close as Jarrett by his side. All too often in life, especially in politics, influential people have groups of yes men and women, who aren’t willing to challenge them to make the best decisions. As the article illustrates -- and I know of other instances -- when the candidate wanted to go one way, those close to him, unwilling to risk his wrath, capitulated. But on those occasions, Jarrett saw things differently, and because of her total and
complete understanding of the candidate, he agreed to follow her instructions. Finally, it’s worth noting that Jarrett’s gender and race are also important to this equation. Her presence means that it’s no longer about “all the president’s men’s” being a group of smart white guys. She brings her experiences as a woman, an African-American and a businesswoman to the table, and she doesn’t just see the world through the prism of a white male. Each person’s ethnicity and gender play roles in how that person makes decisions, whether we want to admit it or not. And it’s high time that we have greater diversity among the upper echelon of a president’s advisers. Roland S. Weight the Wrong Debate Over Surgeon General Pick, Dr. Regina Benjamin

“
Never judge a book by its cover” is what my parents taught me, and it is what I am teaching my children. But based on the recent criticisms surrounding President Obama’s selection for Surgeon General, Dr. Regina Benjamin, it seems that more than a few people are forgetting to apply that basic lesson. The naysayers want to rationalize that as a plus sized woman Dr. Benjamin is not qualified to serve as Surgeon General, especially while America is in the midst of an obesity crisis. Is there no merit to the
contents of the proverbial wisdom in this instance? When you consider this it is quite clear why she is more than qualified. Her record is both exemplary and quite moving, to say the least. Dr. Benjamin is the founder and CEO of the Bayou La Batre Rural Health Clinic in Bayou La Batre, Alabama. She is the former associate dean for rural health at the University of South Alabama’s College of Medicine in Mobile, where she administers the Alabama AHEC Alabama Area Health Education Center program and previously directed its Telemedicine Program. She serves as the current president of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama. In 1998 she was the United States’ recipient of the Nelson Mandela Award for Health and Human Rights. In 1995 she was elected to the American Medical Association’s board of trustees, making her the first physician under age 40 and the first African-American woman to be elected. She has also served as president of the American Medical Association’s Education and Research Foundation. And that’s only the beginning of her impressive accolades. Though arguably one of the brightest female doctors, her patients will attest that she has sacrificially served many knowing their inability to pay for her superior services.
She chose to remain and rebuild her practice after it was destroyed in hurricane Katrina rather than flee the region. She is committed to making sure no one falls through the cracks. The work she has done and all that she has accomplished is a better way to judge whether she will do a good job. Makes me wonder if the concerns are more rooted in our obsession with a waif type of appearance as the look of health. Or maybe it’s sexism that requires women to be more fit than men. Or perhaps just plain prejudice. From where I stand she clearly has her FITatudes together. In our FITatudes classes we always teach that healthy lifestyle change is a journey! Who are we to say that she is not on her own journey now and is making efforts to live healthily though her results have not led to a size 4? And just because her journey has not resulted in a size 4 doesn’t mean she is not healthy. Growing evidence suggests that BMI alone is not a good predictor of health and perhaps a size 4 is not a healthy weight for her body type since we come in all different shapes and sizes - as God intended. A skinny sister can have high cholesterol and osteoporosis while her size 10 counterpart may have excellent cholesterol readings, stronger bones and a better muscle to fat ratio.
What we do know is that she is not living in a vacuum and is well aware of the 66% of Americans that are overweight or obese. She sees it and has experienced it in her professional, family (diabetic father) and personal life. Since we don’t know, why are we letting the cover fool us into overlooking the woman who might be the best suited to lead us out of this epidemic? Well you may say that appearance often lends credibility to what the persons is trying to promote. But it can also work in that her appearance makes her more relatable to the majority of Americans. The role model we need is not one that is based solely on a “fashion-model” like appearance but one who not only will look after the nation’s health but also will be a living example of healthy lifestyle and the journey to wellness that the 66% (and counting) of overweight and obese Americans will need. Once again we have a situation where a minority woman has to be twice as good to get half the credit. Let’s support Dr. Benjamin as she leads us to better health. he entertainment world was shocked this week with the news of a tweet from Paula Abdul who

in doing so. After 8 seasons of making “American Idol” America’s most favorite venue on television Abdul is sadly parting ways with the show. It is believed that the award winning dancer, choreographer, and singer was not happy with the salary she was offered and wanted more money. Now who among us could blame her for that especially after host Ryan Seacrest was offered more than twice as much as she was. He is now the highest paid reality show host. Simon is making millions, too, but that is to be expected since he is the show’s executive producer. Randy, whose salary has not been revealed, is rolling in the dough and poor Paula was the lowest man on the totem pole. With all that has happened to her I wouldn’t be surprised if the new judge, Kara DioGuardi earned more money than Paula. Personally, I think ‘Idol’ is off their rocker to let her go because she is as much a fixture on that show as the name itself and adds something special to the show that DioGuardi can’t. The new season of ‘American Idol’ will surely let the powers that be know the value of Paula Abdul when their ratings falter. Someone who is not faltering is Katherine Jackson. The matriarch of the Jackson family recently got a court victory in fulfillment of Michael Jackson’s will. She was awarded custody of all three of Michael’s children. In addition to permanent guardianship, Katherine was also awarded a monetary allowance to help defray the costs in raising the children. Prince Michael and ParisMichael, the two older children, signed declarations stating whom they wanted as their guardian. The court’s custody proceedings ran rather smoothly in some eyes since the older children’s biological mother Deborah Rowe didn’t contest custody. I wonder why Rowe was even approached. She had previously signed

away her parental rights and paid handsomely for that release. This is an indicator that maybe she didn’t want to be a mother. Now she wants a relationship with the children. How absurd! Who is to say she won’t change her mind again? It’s a good thing Katherine and her lawyers worked out a deal to ensure that the children will stay with the Jackson family. Katherine is also seeking more control over her son’s estate. That battle will likely be more drawn out. The current executors John Branca and John McClain are not too willing to grant that request. Katherine has also been given the right to see the comeback tour contract her son signed with AEG concert producers at some date in the future and under some unspecified conditions. It seems strange that the executors of Michael’s will can’t understand this simple concept that if Michael trusted Katherine with his most prize possessions, his children, everything else should be a given. An iconic beauty who was the first African American supermodel has died. Naomi Sims succumbed to cancer at age 61 on August 1, 2009. Sims broke racial barriers for black women in the fashion and design industry after appearing on the cover of Ladies’ Home Journal in 1968. Women looked to Sims for more than just fashion tips but also beauty tips. When she hung up her runway heels, she became an entrepreneur and launched a wig business that developed into a beauty empire. Sims also shared advice through her words as an author in a column for “Right On!” magazine and penned several books such as “All About Health and Beauty for the Black Woman” and “How to Be a Top Model.” She is survived by her son Robert Findlay, a granddaughter, and her sister Betty Sims.

ning production is back for a limited time just for Houstonians. “We are so proud to offer our patrons and the city of Houston an additional chance to see this amazing production. It’s truly too special and too important a piece of work to miss,” says David Greiss, Director of Marketing for Theatre Under the Stars. In the lead role is Kenita Miller. Portraying the role of Celie since 2007, Miller says that she is still finding new ways to relate to the character that is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book of the same name by Alice Walker. “I do relate to her but more than anything I am aspiring to be more like this character - just for her level of forgiveness, her coming into her own, and owning her womanliness until the end of the story,” said Miller about the character that constantly transforms throughout the show. “I want to be the best woman that I can be and I think Celie is the woman who finds her way of being that.” Her desire to relate to this character may be the result of so many similarities in her life and the play. For example, purple is her favorite color and when she was a little girl her Easter dress every year of her young life was always purple. Miller finds that she is at her best when doing what she loves and the stage is one of those things. “The stage is in my heart,”
she says. “It feels good to make people feel a certain way or bring them out of whatever they may be thinking before they came to the theatre and sat down to see a show. If you can make people escape for just a few hours I think that is a great service because everybody needs a little escape from everyday reality.” “The Color Purple” is just the production to make theater-goers forget about their reality as it pulls at the heart’s string because throughout the show Celie is cheered on by the audience to overcome all her obstacles and barriers so she can succeed. “You are doing more than just playing in costumes. It actually gives it some meaning,” said Miller. That may be due to the fact that the stage production goes into greater detail than the movie, so it is more reflective of the book. In my 2008 review of “The Color Purple” I let readers know that Celie found true joy in life through her trials. After speaking with Miller I learned that loving life is not the only lesson in “The Color Purple” but also the gift of self love and forgiveness - lessons from which everyone can benefit. The Facing Mars Speaker Series gives the public a chance to meet speakers from national space agencies as they share their experiences with traveling and working in space, as well as the challenges we face in traveling to and working on Mars. n Saturday, August 1, 2009, Houston Style Magazine was on hand at the 2009 Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (S.T.E.M.) program at Texas Southern University Science Center. This program provides middle school students who are interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, an opportunity to advance their knowledge during a four-week camp. The program provided participants real world experiences, hands-on activities focusing on science and technology along with engineering and mathematics, and a $200 stipend upon completion of the program. Presented by HoustonWorks USA and Shell, the students of the S.T.E.M. program shared their experience with attendees at the culminating activity for initiative. One who was very interested in the students’ projects and provided words of wisdom as the keynote speaker was NASA Administrator, General Charles Bolden. Smashing the Boring Burger
he hamburger is as American as apple pie, baseball, and hot dogs. Throughout the years these staples of American culture may have been altered with spices, rule changes, and such, b u t t h e basic ingredients and fundamentals have remained almost the same but with a little improvement. Smashburger took a traditional American favorite and made it the best tasting burger ever. Quickly becoming America’s favorite burger destination, Smashburger excels at burger execution due to one very important thing, freshness. Fresh herbs and spices help to season atop buns that are shipped fresh daily for burgers that are not made until the customer orders. See the pattern here? There is no assembly line to make stale overcooked burgers that sit under a heat lamp all day. The Smashburger way is to capitalize on freshness to make the burger its best. Every burger that is ordered at Smashburger smashes, sizzles, and is savored. Cooks literally smash the 100% Angus Beef on the grill so they hear it sizzling in its natural juices. Locking in the moisture makes for one mouth-watering hunk of satisfaction that the customer will definitely savor. The beautiful part of Smashburger, as if this alone were not enough, is that customers may customize their own burgers or chose to let cooks prepare one of their pre-planned burgers. After choosing from an assortment of buns, 1/3 or ½ pound of Angus beef is placed on a bun which is then dressed up with one or a variety of cheeses, sauces, dressings, and other toppings to make a burger so delicious you wanna slap your mama. Please trust me; it is that good! Oh, but you don’t eat beef? No problem, the same options are available for the most tender pieces of chicken that are grilled to sear in the flavors of the meat. Salad entrees are also available and side orders of French fries that are shoe-string cut russet potatoes seasoned with sea salt and thinly sliced onion rings served with dipping sauce. May I interject here that the onion rings are to die for! One of the most unique things about burgers at Smashburger is the knack for details. To ensure that they are satisfying the taste of hamburger
connoisseurs Smashburger has regional burgers. So in Texas the burger is made to appeal to the taste of Texans with the addition of mustard while in Idaho the burgers come with potato chips on a potato bun. In Minn e sota, banki n g on the twin city theme, the burger has cheddar bar cheese and Swiss cheese with grilled onions and in Oklahoma burgers come with fried pickles, pepper jack cheese, haystack onions and buttermilk ranch dressing. The burgers in Utah seem a little Texan since they have honey BBQ sauce, applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, and Haystack onions. In any region, however, burger customization exists. Smashburger has another unique service not provided at most hamburger joints. The employees bring the food to the customers’ table. Besides having great tasting burgers and warm friendly service, Smashburger also has other menu items that are quintessential American. One hundred percent Hebrew National beef hotdogs are split and seared to order and served on lightly toasted poppy seed buns. The dog may be Chicago style, with chili and cheese or the classic style with yellow mustard, ketchup and sweet relish. Smashsides in addition to the French fries and onion rings offer further enhancement of the meal. One of my favorite sides is their veggie frites. These flash fried asparagus spears, carrot sticks, and green beans are so good and they are healthy, too. Even kids enjoy eating these delectable vegetables. Tender beefy chili with beans, fresh jalapeno slices and grated cheddar cheese is another luscious smashside. Don’t leave Smashburger before trying one of their delicious milk shakes, malts, or root beer floats. Made with Haagen-Dazs ice cream and love the strawberry shake I ordered slid down my throat as smoothly as skier slaloming on a slope in mountain high Colorado. This new franchise that is based in Colorado is just starting to sweep the nation. Style Book Review “The Green Business Guide” by Glenn Bachman

O
ne night last week, you saw something you’d never noticed before. You happened to stay after work for an hour for some catch-up and the office cleaning crew came in before you left. You watched, dumbfounded, as they hauled away bag after bag after bag of trash. Paper, discarded cups, empty soda cans, empty printer cartridges, all to the Dumpster.
You’ve been doing all you can at home to be greener. So why can’t you do the same at work? You can and it won’t be easy, but with “The Green Business Guide” by Glenn Bachman, corporate greening is more do-able than ever. Bachman says there are three trends that affect going green in your business: a global economy defined by “relatively free exchange of goods”, a change in the health of the planet, and a growing world-wide population. Within the next 20 years, it’s projected that there will be 8 billion people on Earth. One of them – you – could make a difference. Becoming a green enterprise will take planning, without a doubt. Bachman points out that not every business will need to implement everything in this book. Depending on the size of your corporation, not everything he mentions is practical to do. To get started, embrace an ecodesign, both in the product you put out and the products you use. Ecodesign is “a meld of art and science that creates ecologically benign and economically viable products and services”, which pretty much sums up what you’re about to do. Designate a person within your corporation whose responsibility is to make sure
your materials procurement strategy is ecologically sound. When shipping your product, know what kind of packing you need and don’t overuse. If you’re thinking about building, be sure your contractor is in agreement about Earth-friendly materials. Inside your building, make use of settings to avoid running appliances when they’re not needed. Take a hard look at your automotive fleet and the transportation needs of your staff, including all business trips of all lengths. Consider telecommuting. Make a goal of becoming a certified green enterprise. Looking for a light-hearted, fun way to go green at work? You won’t find it here. “The Green Business Guide” means business, in more ways than one. There’s no “dumbing down” in this book, and nothing cutesy. Author Glenn Bachman uses technical terms and (gasp!) advanced math-based concepts to help you find the best and most efficient ways to make your corporation greener. Some of the ideas are new but common-sense (let shareholders know what’s in it for them), some seem to be grumpy (if someone sends you a document, single-sided, call and request that they not do it again), and some feel nit-picky (use only narrow-ruled notebooks). Still, there’s nothing saying you
