MUSIC COMES ALIVE WITH MUSIC DIRECTOR ANDRÉS OROZCO-ESTRADA With his engaging style and approachable personality, Andrés brings innovation and excitement to the Houston Symphony. Committed to multimedia collaboration and exploring technology in the concert hall, Andrés breaks down traditional barriers, making concerts more rewarding with his characteristic insights and humor. This season Andrés continues his multi-year explorations of works by major composers, bringing some of the repertoire’s most exciting music
to Houston audiences. Featured composers such as Mahler, Ives and Shostakovich enrich our programming, challenge the orchestra and give audiences the opportunity to hear worldclass performances. With their ambitious scope and emotional range, Mahler’s symphonies are a high point in any concert series. This season, the orchestra continues its journey through Gustav Mahler’s works with his Symphony No. 4. We also champion the music of America with Charles
Ives’ Symphony No. 3, The Camp Meeting. Featuring atmospheric movement titles like “Old Folks Gatherin’” and “Children’s Day,” this iconic symphony paints a picture of life in America at the dawn of the twentieth century. Andrés continues his electric performances of music by Shostakovich with the Russian master’s Symphony No. 11, The Year 1905. With an engaging mix of favorite masterpieces and new discoveries, every program promises listeners an exciting musical adventure.

Hailed as “America’s favorite mezzo” (Gramophone Magazine), opera star Susan Graham lends her lustrous voice to our 2017-18 Season’s Opening Night Concert. Featuring arias from her signature stage roles and favorite showtunes, this delightful program will begin the season with gorgeous melodies and Graham’s infectious “joy in her art” (The Telegraph).

HANDEL’S MESSIAH
JUNE 17, 2017
THE SUFFERS WITH THE HOUSTON SYMPHONY
Paul Agnew, conductor Yulia Van Doren, soprano Daniel Taylor, countertenor Samuel Levine, tenor Alex Rosen, bass Houston Symphony Chorus Betsy Cook Weber, director HANDEL Messiah
Steven Reineke, conductor
Defined as “Gulf Coast Soul,” Houston-born band The Suffers have emerged as one of the hottest musical acts in the country, with a recent appearance on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. Now this homegrown octet is bringing their eclectic spin on blues, soul, country, Caribbean, Cajun and hip-hop to The Woodlands this summer with Principal POPS Conductor Steven Reineke and the Houston Symphony. There’s no better way to celebrate the start of Steven’s tenure than a performance with Houston talent.
Celebrate Christmas with a true Houston holiday tradition. Praised for the “perfect harmony, excellence, [and] virtuosity” (Est Républicain) he brings to his ensembles, conductor Paul Agnew leads the Houston Symphony Chorus, soloists and orchestra in Houston’s premier performances of this Baroque masterpiece. From “Comfort ye, my people” to the final “Amen” chorus, Messiah will leave you singing “Hallelujah” for Handel!
Tickets for this performance are available through The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. For more information, please visit woodlandscenter.org.
*Concert held at Sugar Land Baptist Church.

BEHIND EVERY ADVENTURE IS AN INCREDIBLE STORY. Returning to the Houston Symphony for its second season this fall, National Geographic Live is a thrilling 3-event speaker series, which explores the world through the eyes of great explorers, filmmakers, photographers and paleontologists. Each thoughtprovoking presentation, which also includes an audience Q&A session, showcases the world’s natural beauty while expanding the frontiers of human knowledge and achievement. We look forward to bringing these fascinating stories to you on Tuesday evenings at Jones Hall. NOTE: The Houston Symphony will not perform during these events.

Anand Varma, photographer
Photojournalist Brian Skerry celebrates the sea and its creatures in magnificent images collected during more than 10,000 hours underwater spanning 30 years, including a magical but risky experience photographing an enormous right whale. Since 1998, Skerry has been a contributing photographer for National Geographic magazine, covering a wide range of assignments.
When Anand Varma takes a photograph of a parasitic wasp consuming a caterpillar from the inside, he doesn’t want to you to be disgusted. He wants you to be astonished. After all, he’s devoted years of his life to perfecting his techniques to create dramatic, bizarre—and beautiful—images of the miniature world around us. In these truly unique images, he reveals the secret life cycle of the honeybee, captures the lightning-fast behaviors of hummingbirds and offers a rare glimpse at our world’s small wonders.

SPINOSAURUS: LOST GIANT OF THE CRETACEOUS Nizar Ibrahim, paleontologist
Meet Spinosaurus, the largest predatory dinosaur yet discovered—larger than T. rex—and hear the incredible story of how this prehistoric giant was almost lost to science, before being brought back to light with the help of a remarkable young paleontologist. With amazing video, Ibrahim tells the story of Spinosaurus’ discovery, loss and rediscovery, and explain what—other than its size—makes this ancient monster unique.

CONCERT & GALA
SEPTEMBER 9, 2017 Concert Sponsor Lead Corporate Gala Underwriter
The Houston Symphony launches the 2017-18 Season in style, in the company of Grammy®-winning mezzo-soprano Susan Graham, one of the world’s leading opera singers and a native Texan. Graham’s roles span four centuries, from Monteverdi’s Poppea to Sister Helen Prejean in Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking, a role written for her.
The evening begins with a champagne reception at The Corinthian. Guests are then transported to Jones Hall for the Opening Night Concert, featuring Graham and guest conductor Gustavo Gimeno. Following the concert, the celebration at The Corinthian continues with a gourmet dinner by Jackson and Company, music and dancing. For information on the Opening Night Gala, please contact Monica Simon, Director, Special Events, at monica.simon@houstonsymphony.org or 713-337-8549.

Legacy gifts help to secure the future of the Houston Symphony and allow donors to express their personal values in a highly meaningful way, by taking into account philanthropic, financial and family goals. There are a variety of ways to make a legacy gift; however, what these legacy gifts have in common is that they are gifts made to secure the future of this great orchestral institution. A legacy gift may provide you and your family with tax and estate benefits that meet your needs. Examples include naming the Houston Symphony Endowment as a beneficiary in a will or trust, a life insurance policy, or a qualified retirement plan. For more information regarding this significant way of gifting to the Houston Symphony, please contact Patrick Quinn, Director, Planned Giving at (713) 337-8532 or patrick.quinn@houstonsymphony.org or visit houstonsymphony.planmylegacy.org.
