Andrés Orozco-Estrada
About Andrés
Colombian-born, Vienna-trained Orozco-Estrada is a dynamic young conductor who is both intensely musical and technically consummate. He radiates warmth and sincerity on and off the podium, and has a special talent for sharing his admiration of music with his audience. A natural communicator, Orozco-Estrada is fluent in Spanish, German and English. He is the Houston Symphony’s first Hispanic music director. Andrés will conduct four weekends of concerts during the Centennial Season as Music Director Designate, and will begin his first full season as Music Director in 2014–15.

The orchestra will perform classical blockbusters like Beethoven’s Ode to Joy with the Houston Symphony Chorus, selections from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, and John Williams’ Celebration Fanfare, written for the Houston Symphony. Plus, hear music from The Planets – An HD Odyssey, paired with images of NASA’s exploration of the solar system projected on a giant screen.

A Free Day-Long Celebration of Houston's Musical Diversity Saturday, July 13, 2013, 10 am–10 pm Spend the day at Jones Hall listening to dozens of free performances representing Houston's diverse musical landscape. Begin the day with a family concert in the morning, and end the evening with a concert of favorite symphonic works by the orchestra. In between, hear jazz groups, rock bands, blues artists, ethnic ensembles, choral, chamber music and more. Plus, sample some of Houston's finest food truck fare next door at Jones Plaza.

First, hear the ripening love and impending tragedy in Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet. Then, see rising-star cellist Johannes Moser perform Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations, a piece that earned him a special prize in addition to the top prize in the 2002 Tchaikovsky Competition. Finally, thrill to the frenzied passages and crazed sliding melodies of Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 3.

EDUCATION & COMMUNITY PROGRAMS Impacting Greater Houston Through Live Orchestral Music
With more than 200 performances and events in nearly 90 venues across the city, the Houston Symphony’s Education and Community Programs impact the lives of more than 76,000 students and children in the Houston area and provide access for more than 100,000 Houstonians free of charge. The orchestra brings powerful, entertaining and educational experiences to our city’s churches, synagogues, schools, private homes, social service providers, community facilities, parks, senior centers, classrooms, libraries, hospitals, day care centers, cathedrals, museums and art galleries. We are not only the Houston Symphony, we are Houston’s Symphony – all 656 square miles, and then some. Programs are designed to serve six core constituencies: schools, families, the community at large, educators, aspiring young musicians and music lovers wanting to learn more; and fall into four general categories:
