Mark C. Hanson Executive Director/CEO

As we near the halfway point of our historic Centennial Season, we’ve only just begun to celebrate! We still have yet to experience performances by John Adams, Yefim Bronfim, Chris Botti and Sigourney Weaver, among many other guests. This month, we welcome two superstars in the symphonic world for one unforgettable night of music in Jones Hall: cellist Yo-Yo Ma and conductor/composer John Williams! Also this month, we are delighted to extend our free community concert series with two holiday concerts at the Church Without Walls and Fallbrook Church. As you know, we perform this free series in the summer, but in the Centennial year, we wanted to expand the idea by delivering sounds of the season to families outside of downtown. Our downtown offerings at Jones Hall are perennial favorites beginning with Michael Krajewski’s Very Merry Pops—this year featuring a return of Glad Tidings, a Houston Symphony commission from 2003 which showcases the public speaking talents of four local spiritual leaders as narrators. Turn to page 20 to see which leaders are joining us! Next, our family series continues with How The Grinch Stole Christmas on December 14 followed by the special event, Magical Musical Morning on December 15. We are very grateful to Mary Ann McKeithan and her family for chairing this charming fundraiser—this year themed Up, Up and Away! with a breakfast brunch at River Oaks Country Club. For more information and to purchase tables and tickets, contact Houston Symphony Special Events at (713) 238-1485 or specialevents@houstonsymphony.org. Then, it wouldn’t be December without Handel’s Messiah, and the Symphony has four performances in store, including our second appearance of the season in Sugar Land. Guest conductor Nicolas McGegan is one of the foremost authorities on Baroque music and led the Göttingen Handel Festival for 20 years. Our audiences are in for a special treat. In January, we look forward to announcing our plans for the first season under the helm of incoming Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada. Stay tuned for more details about the official announcement on January 10. We want to express our deepest thanks to the thousands of patrons and donors who have so generously supported our efforts throughout our 100 years. We thank you for your patronage and wish you and yours many blessings in the New Year.

New Century Society for Artistic Excellence and Innovation The New Century Society recognizes the Houston Symphony’s most committed and loyal supporters who have pledged their leadership support over a three-year period to help secure the orchestra’s financial future. MARGARET ALKEK WILLIAMS, HONORARY CHAIR – JOHN WILLIAMS JOINS YO-YO MA As a Governing Director and Lifetime Trustee of the Houston Symphony’s Board of Trustees and an Honorary Chair of the Centennial Season, Margaret Alkek Williams’ leadership and support have contributed greatly to the development and planning of this milestone season. This month, she serves as the Honorary Chair of the Symphony’s presentation of John Williams Joins Yo-Yo Ma. In May, the Houston Symphony will recognize her extraordinary leadership and outstanding contributions to the organization by presenting her with the Raphael Fliegel Award for Visionary Leadership at the Centennial Ball. Q: How did you first get involved with the Houston Symphony? A: I was a music major in college. When I returned to Houston in 1958, I became involved with the Houston Symphony Guild (now the Houston Symphony League). From a very young age, music has been a part of my life; so I was naturally drawn to the Symphony. I have become more involved with each passing year and was Chair of the Symphony’s 70th Anniversary Gala Concert in 1983. This Centennial Season is an important milestone, and I am so very proud to be a part it. Q: You are deeply involved with all of the major performing arts companies in Houston. What makes music, theatre and dance so dear to you? A: Singing and dancing have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I began voice and piano lessons, as well as ballet and tap dancing, while I was in kindergarten. My first performance was as Snow White. I was 5 years old. I continued to perform as the principal in many musicals and operettas during my childhood and throughout college, including productions of Hansel and Gretel, Amahl and the Night Visitors and Carousel. I also performed with the Gilbert & Sullivan Society in Philadelphia, and when I returned to Houston, I joined the Houston Grand Opera Chorus and performed in Turandot, La Traviata and Romeo and Juliet, among others. The arts bring great joy to my life. Q: What was your first concert experience? What do you remember most about it? A: It was Van Cliburn performing with the Houston Symphony in 1946. He had just won a piano competition, and the prize was a performance with the Houston Symphony. It made quite an impression on me because at that time he was only 12 years old—just one year older than me. Q: For the past six years, you have supported the Houston Symphony’s SoundPlusVision Series. What appeals to you most about multimedia concerts? A: While I love the simplicity of a classical concert, I think the use of video, special lighting and dialogue adds another element

www.houstonsymphony.org

of interest. It draws the audience in and creates a new way to experience classical works. This season, I am underwriting the 2013-14 SoundPlusVision Concert Series that includes the recent performance of La Triste Historia and the return of the HD Odyssey Series – The Planets and The Earth in January 2014. I enjoyed the inventiveness and creativity of La Triste Historia; it is always exciting to see the Symphony exploring new ideas. And the images in the HD Odyssey series are absolutely stunning. It’s one the entire family can enjoy. Q: Why are you excited to be recognized as Honorary Chairman for the John Williams Joins Yo-Yo Ma concert? A: I feel so fortunate to live in a city where a symphony orchestra has been so deeply embraced by its community that it is able to celebrate 100 years of music making. An important milestone such as this provides the opportunity to bring two artists of such high caliber together in one evening. It will truly be an once-in-alifetime concert experience, and I am delighted to be a part of it. Q: To what are you looking forward the most about this concert? A: So many things. Not only hearing Yo-Yo Ma play the concerto that John Williams wrote for him, conducted by the composer himself, but also experiencing the Houston Symphony under Williams’ baton while they perform some of the most famous film scores of all time. Williams is a composer whose music, from the moment it is written, becomes so much a part of popular culture. When people think of contemporary film composers, John Williams is the first who comes to mind. Q: You are also serving as an Honorary Chair for the Centennial Season. What is your favorite memory from the season thus far? A: Cirque de la Symphonie was an exciting kickoff for the season. And, of course, I could not have been more pleased for Renée Fleming to perform on Opening Night. I recently enjoyed Megan Hilty and Aaron Lazar’s expert performance of music from the great American songbook, especially “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend” and “Moon River.” Q: What are you most looking forward to in the remainder of the Centennial Season? A: One of the most exciting things about the Centennial Season is the introduction of Andrés Orozco-Estrada as Music Director Designate. He is extraordinarily talented and charismatic. He brings an energy and enthusiasm that are palpable to the audience as well as the musicians and Chorus. I am very excited to see him conduct Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony and the back-to-back presentation of The Planets and The Earth in January as well as the concert with Yefim Bronfman in April. In May, I very much look forward to Christoph Eschenbach’s return to conduct Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, “Symphony of a Thousand,” and Matthew Morrison’s performance at the Centennial Ball.

TEXT | HANDEL’S MESSIAH | DECEMBER 19-22 INTERMISSION

Part the Second

Chorus Behold the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world. (John 1:29) Air (Countertenor) He was despised and rejected of men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief. (Isaiah 53:3) He gave His back to the smiters, and His cheeks to them that plucked off the hair, He hid not His face from shame and spitting. (Isaiah 50:6) Chorus Surely, He hath borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; He was wounded for our transgressions. He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon Him. (Isaiah 53:4-5) Chorus And with His stripes we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5) Chorus All we like sheep have gone astray, we have turned ev’ry one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all. (Isaiah 53:6) Accompagnato (Tenor) All they that see Him, laugh Him to scorn; they shoot out their lips, and shake their heads, saying: (Psalm 22:7) Chorus He trusted in God that He would deliver Him, let Him deliver Him, if He delight in Him. (Psalm 69:20) Accompagnato (Tenor) Thy rebuke hath broken His heart; He is full of heaviness. He looked for some to have pity on Him, but there was no man, neither found He any to comfort Him. (Psalm 69:20)

Air (Soprano) How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things. (Romans 10:15) Air (Bass-baritone) Why do the nations so furiously rage together, why do the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth rise up, and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord and against His Anointed. (Psalm 2:1-2) Chorus Let us break their bonds asunder, and cast away their yokes from us. (Psalm 2:3) Recitative (Tenor) He that dwelleth in heaven shall laugh them to scorn, the Lord shall have them in derision. (Psalm 2:4) Air (Tenor) Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron, Thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel. (Psalm 2:9) Chorus Hallelujah, for the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth, Hallelujah! (Revelation 19:6) The Kingdom of this world is become the Kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign for ever and ever. (Revelation 11:15) King of Kings, and Lord of Lords. (Revelation 11:16)

Part the Third

Air (Soprano) I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that He shall stand at the latter day upon the earth, and tho’ worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God. (Job 19:25-26) For now is Christ risen from the dead, the first-fruits of them that sleep. (1 Corinthians 15:20)

Arioso (Tenor) Behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto His sorrow? (Lamentations 1:12)

Chorus Since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. (1 Corinthians 15:21-22)

Accompagnato (Tenor) He was cut off out of the land of the living; for the transgressions of Thy people was He stricken. (Isaiah 53:8)

Accompagnato (Bass-baritone) Behold, I tell you a mystery; we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be chang’d, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. (1 Corinthians 15:51-52)

Air (Tenor) But Thou didst not leave His soul in hell; nor didst Thou suffer Thy Holy One to see corruption. (Psalm 16:10)

Air (Bass-baritone) The trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be rais’d incorruptible, and we shall be chang’d. (1 Corinthians 15:52)

Chorus Life up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors, and the King of Glory shall come in! Who is this King of Glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. Who is this King of Glory? The Lord of Hosts. He is the King of Glory. (Psalm 24:7-10)

Chorus Worthy is the Lamb that was slain, and hath redeemed us to God by His blood, to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing. Blessing and honor, glory and pow’r be unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb, for ever and ever. (Revelation 5:9 and 12-13) Chorus Amen. December 2013 29

NOTES | HANDEL’S MESSIAH | DECEMBER 19-22 cal satire of the stilted, foreign-language operatic medium sounded a virtual death knell of Handel’s efforts in that direction. In the 1730s, he turned to the English-language oratorio, adding a powerful choral element to the stage drama and, in many instances, a biblical story familiar to his audiences through their knowledge of sacred scripture. Alas, this new theatrical medium also nearly succumbed to lack of public interest by the end of that decade. Handel’s fortunes as an oratorio composer might have ebbed irretrievably had it not been for a request in 1741 by England’s governing Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, William Cavendish, that he visit Dublin and present a series of charity concerts benefiting Dublin’s Mercer Hospital. In his background study of Handel’s Messiah, author Richard Luckett cites a report published by the governors of Mercer Hospital, of a £348-deficit for the year ending November 1, 1740. With a population of 125,000, Dublin was then the 11th largest city in Europe, Luckett says, with more people than Berlin, Madrid or Milan. But half of the citizens lived in severe poverty, and charity was a necessity in providing a modicum of health care for them. Handel quickly accepted Cavendish’s invitation and set about composing two new oratorios, Messiah and Samson. Messiah was completed in just 24 days, August 22 through September 12, 1741. He then gathered up a group of other works, including several secular choral-orchestral pieces, and departed for Dublin on November 18. A new concert room had been constructed on Fishamble Street the previous month, and it was there that Handel began his series on December 23 with performances of his setting to John Milton’s L’Allegro, Il Penseroso ed il Moderato, two instrumental concertos and an organ concerto. Messiah received its acclaimed premiere on April 13, 1742, and there was a second performance on June 3. Handel returned to England in the middle of August and began a season of oratorios at Covent Garden, highlighted by several acclaimed performances of Samson. But Messiah was less well received, apparently because religious elements in London considered it blasphemous to perform a work with so sacred a topic in a theater. (In Dublin, there had been objections to performing it in churches, because the inclu30

NOTES | HANDEL’S MESSIAH | DECEMBER 19-22 sion of instrumental music and elaborate singing smacked of popery.) It was not until 1750, when Handel began presenting Messiah as a benefit for London’s Foundling Hospital, that the oratorio gained lasting popularity there. The opening Christmas portion of the oratorio is suffused with a pastoral feeling. There is a gently caressing quality to the melodic and rhythmic profile of the initial tenor aria, “Comfort ye,” a trusting innocence to the musical character of the chorus, “For unto us a child is born,” and a light, feathery sound in the florid theme of the choral fugue, “And he shall purify.” Even the alto aria and chorus, “O Thou that tellest good tidings to Zion,” attains a gently lilting quality by virtue of the easygoing 6/8 meter underlying the rhythm of that movement. But when Christ’s birth and good will toward men have been duly celebrated, the mood changes abruptly. Part Two opens with a heavy heart, as the tonality turns suddenly to G minor while the chorus sings the drooping melodic line and treading dotted rhythms of “Behold the Lamb of God that taketh away the sins of the world.” This is followed by the sad but poignantly beautiful “He was despised.” Several aspects of the aria are typical of Handel’s style: its spacious, airy feeling with short thematic motives separated by little orchestral echoes, its inventive but orderly progression of musical ideas and its dignified character. Other sentiments force their way into Handel’s drama of human redemption. The chorus, “All we, like sheep, have gone astray,” paints a picture of a distracted populace, deaf to the voice of God and heedless of his message. The piece is famous for its little running melody lines, which seem to wander aimlessly like the sheep mentioned in the text. In depicting the mockery of the babbling crowd at the foot of Christ’s cross, Handel chooses a pompous choral fugue for the psalm text, “He trusted in God that he would deliver him, if he delight in him.” The cynicism of their laughter is heightened by the fact that Handel starts this guffawing fugue in the low, heavy bass section of the choir. Where mockery brings on the tragedy of Christ’s crucifixion in the three poignant recitatives and arias sung next by the tenor, that sentiment turns to a mood of gentle consolation in three numbers dealing with his resurrection and the fulfillment of his mission to spread the word of God. Here, the soprano quietly bridges the changing mood from defeat to victory with the recitative, “He was cut off,” the poignant aria, “But Thou didst not leave His soul in Hell,” setting the stage for the short but florid chorus, “The Lord gave the word” and the lovely soprano aria, “How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace.” The bass-baritone voice returns chosen to depict righteous anger in the solo aria, “Why do the nations rage so furiously together?” The verb of that text is key to Handel’s inspiration here, for the piece is a “rage” aria typical of the whole tradition of baroque opera. It is the most operatic piece in the oratorio and, together with the more famous bass aria, “The trumpet shall sound” in Part Three of Messiah, this challenging piece sets the requirement for a very powerful, technically nimble bass voice in the cast of any Messiah performance. Just rage is also the dominant emotion in the intense tenor aria, “Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron.” All of these arias depict God as the Old Testament deity of power and vengeance rather than the New Testament deity of forgiveness and redemption. The music becomes triumphant in the exultant “Hallelujah” Chorus that forms the climactic conclusion to Part Two of Messiah. With the drama of redemption essentially completed at this point, the mood changes to one of consolation and gratitude in Part Three. It opens with the lyrical soprano aria, “I know that my redeemer liveth,” and the gentle, poised character of that aria is typical of Handel’s treatment of the solo soprano voice in Messiah. A direct chordal style is Handel’s choice for “Worthy is the Lamb,” which begins the closing choral piece in the oratorio. As this concluding number progresses, the composer again turns to fugal devices, both in the martial setting of “Blessing and honor, glory and power be unto him,” and in the swelling “Amen” which brings Messiah to a joyous conclusion. The printed music for Handel’s Messiah was donated by the Edith F. Bondi Foundation in memory of Edith F. Bondi and Great Uncle Conductor Simon Parmet. ©2013, Carl R. Cunningham December 2013 31

As he embarks on his fourth decade on the podium, Nicholas McGegan, hailed as “one of the finest Baroque conductors of his generation” (The Independent), is increasingly recognized for his probing and revelatory explorations of music of all periods. He has been music director of Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra for 27 years, and was artistic director of the Göttingen Handel Festival for 20 years (1991–2011). This season, he became principal guest conductor of the Pasadena Symphony. His approach to period style—intelligent, infused with joy and never dogmatic—has led to appearances with major orchestras, including the New York, Los Angeles and Hong Kong Philharmonics; the Chicago, Milwaukee, Toronto and Sydney Symphony Orchestras; the St. Louis Symphony; the Cleveland and the Philadelphia Orchestras; and the Northern Sinfonia and Scottish Chamber Orchestra, where his programs often mingle Baroque with later works. He is at home in opera houses, and has conducted companies, including Covent Garden, San Francisco, Santa Fe and Washington. English-born Nicholas McGegan was educated at Cambridge and Oxford. He was made an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) “for services to music overseas.” Other awards include the Halle Handel Prize; the Order of Merit of the State of Lower Saxony (Germany); the Medal of Honour of the City of Göttingen, and a declaration of Nicholas McGegan Day, by the Mayor of San Francisco in recognition of his work with Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra. His extensive discography includes five recent releases on Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra’s label, Philharmonia Baroque Productions (PBP), including Brahms’ Serenades; Berlioz’ Les nuits d’été and Handel arias with Lorraine Hunt Lieberson; Haydn Symphonies Nos. 88, 101 and 104 (nominated for a Grammy® Award); Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons and other concertos with violinist Elizabeth Blumenstock; and Handel’s Atalanta, featuring soprano Dominique Labelle. Visit www.nicholasmcgegan.com.

DOMINIQUE LABELLE, soprano Dominique Labelle has fearlessly plumbed the technical and emotional depths of music, turning in performances possessed of “conviction without exhibitionism” (De Telegraaf) that have “the audience hanging on every note” (Boston Globe). Recent engagements include Stravinsky’s Les Noces with the St. Louis Symphony; Handel with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra; a Messiah tour with the Netherlands Bach Society; Yehudi Wyner’s Fragments from Antiquity with the Lexington Symphony; and performances with conductor Nicholas McGegan with the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, the Göttingen Handel Festival and the National Arts Centre Orchestra. Another favorite collaborator is Hungarian conductor Iván Fischer, with whom she performed the Countess Almaviva in Mozart’s Nozze di Figaro at Teatro Pérez Galdós in Las Palmas and in Budapest, Bach’s B-minor Mass in Washington, D.C., St. Matthew Passion with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and a Mozart Requiem with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s at Carnegie Hall. She also works regularly with conductor Jean-Marie Zeitouni. Last season, she sang the lead female role in the modern premiere of Monsigny’s Le Roi et le fermier for Opera Lafayette, conducted

MUSICIAN SPONSORSHIP diately. “The musician sponsor relationship deepens my experience with the Houston Symphony. When attending concerts, I particularly listen for Mark’s playing with a keen ear!” tells Steven. Mark finds the relationship equally as fulfilling. “Just as our audience often desires a personal connection with the musicians, we also desire to have that connection with our patrons,” says Mark. “I love hearing Margaret’s reflections after a concert—what she liked, what she didn’t like, what she thought of the conductor, her impressions of the soloist —everything. We rarely get to listen to a concert from the seats of Jones Hall, so it’s always a treat to get an impression from the audience.” Both Steven and Margaret concur, “The musicians of the Houston Symphony are incredibly talented, and we have immense respect for them and consider them celebrities in Houston. Getting to know them personally is enriching and enjoyable; we absolutely recommend that others become musician sponsors.” photo by eric arbiter

Margaret Waisman has served on the Board of the Houston Symphony since 1977, having chaired both the Finance Committee and Musical Affairs Committee, as well as serving on the Development Committee and several subcommittees. “When I moved to Houston, I knew I wanted to be on the Board of the Houston Symphony, to do everything in my power to make it flourish,” says Margaret. Margaret’s husband, Steven Callahan, has enjoyed an evolving role as a supporter and musician sponsor over the years. “Through Margaret’s dedication to the Houston Symphony, I have become aware of how a successful orchestra requires great musicians, great staff, great supporters, and great benefactors—all working ‘in concert’!” With both having cherished musical backgrounds, becoming musician sponsors was a natural fit for Margaret and Steven. The couple first met percussionist Mark Griffith in the Green Room shortly after he joined the Houston Symphony in 2004. They hit it off imme-

EducaTIon and Community Engagement Programs

Jones Hall Comes Alive with the Dead On this year’s Día de los Muertos, the Houston Symphony deepened its engagement with the community in two very important and meaningful ways: first, by the commissioning of a new multi-media project, La Triste Historia, and second, by pairing that premiere with a significant community partnership. La Triste Historia, a multi-media film plus music project featuring a new symphony by Mexican composer Juan Trigos and a new animated film by producer Ben Young Mason and executive producer Duncan Copp was premiered by the Houston Symphony on November 1, 2 and 3 coinciding with the Mexican holiday, Día de los Muertos. This new work commissioned by the Houston Symphony tells the love story of Jesús and Magdalena set against the backdrop of the Mexican Revolution. After Magdalena’s death, the two are reunited during the Mexican tradition of Day of the Dead. In addition to the performances, more than 200 HISD students from Ortiz and Paul

Revere Middle Schools attended, for free, a private dress rehearsal. In its efforts to more deeply engage the Hispanic community, the Symphony partnered with the Mexican Consulate and hosted its annual Day of the Dead Altar Exhibit in the Jones Hall lobby during the premiere of La Triste Historia. An Opening Ceremony was held on October 30 to which the community was invited for an evening of dance, folk music and traditional food and drink. More than 250 people from the Hispanic community came to Jones Hall for the evening’s festivities and many later returned for the world premiere of La Triste Historia. In addition to the Altar Exhibit, there was a display of several prints commemorating the 100th anniversary of the death of Jose Guadalupe Posada along with artwork from the students and staff of MECA (Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts). Projects like La Triste Historia that combine innovative and unique artistic commissions and performances with community partnerships reflect the Symphony’s vision to be the entrepreneurial cornerstone of the performing arts in Houston.

The Houston Symphony acknowledges those individuals, corporations and foundations that support our education and community engagement activities. Each year, these activities impact the lives of more than 82,000 children and students and provide access to our world-class orchestra for nearly 111,000 Houstonians free of charge.

BACKSTAGE PASS

Daniel Strba, viola Birthplace: Chicago, Illinois Education: De Paul University, BM; Cleveland Institute of Music, MM Joined the Houston Symphony: March 1992 I can’t wait for: During our exciting Centennial Season, I’m eagerly anticipating the performances with our new Music Director Designate Andrés Orozco-Estrada. Beginnings: I began to play viola at age 13, but previously started piano at 4 and guitar at 10. Career inspiration: I fell in love with music at an early age, and it was a natural choice for me. All in the family: My mother taught music in the Chicago public schools for 35 years. My sister is a professional opera singer currently on the voice faculty of Bowling Green State University in Ohio. My wife, Marcia Sterling, is a professional violinist, singer and entertainer extraordinaire! Musical inspiration: Stravinsky, Ravel, Rachmaninoff, Bill Evans, Chick Corea, Bach and on and on . . . Keeping the music-making fresh: Music is a deep subject. There are always more layers to explore. Marcia’s and my musical lives are intertwined. Most difficult aspect of my instrument: Physical stamina. To this end, I practice and teach Tai chi ch’uan and Kundalini yoga. If I weren’t a musician, I would be: I can’t imagine being anything else. Besides, I love wearing white tie and tails, so I would have to be a maitre’d or ballroom dance instructor. Notable career moment: Marcia and I toured for seven years with Frank Sinatra. Hobbies and interests: Marcia and I formed The Best Little Klezmer Band in Texas in 1993. Klezmer is Eastern European Jewish music which came to the U.S. in the early 20th century and mixed with American jazz. Marcia is the leader, violinist and lead vocalist. I play viola/piano and am the musical arranger. We perform for many community celebrations, weddings, bar and bat mitzvas, dedications and public concerts. In July, we performed at the Symphony’s first annual Day of Music. This past September, the Houston Ballet per52

formed Ketubah, which was choreographed to our music; we provided the live accompaniment. Now other ballet companies across the country are adding Ketubah to their repertoire. We are currently working on our new album, Meshuganah Mambo, which fuses Klezmer and Latin music.
