SE ASON
Welcome to the 2020–21 Season! I am always happy to be here with our talented orchestra as we continue exploring the classical repertoire each season, enjoying the tremendous inspiration that comes from our musicians while making music both for ourselves and our wonderful audiences. I’m excited about what we’ll do together this season and the guest soloists and conductors the orchestra will work with during the year. My programs celebrate the remarkable talents of our Houston Symphony musicians throughout the season, including Concertmaster Yoonshin Song in her first full season with us. We welcome back to Houston some of the greatest artists of our time, Lang Lang and Hilary Hahn, as well as Itzhak Perlman, who joins us for his first of three years as Artistic Partner. We celebrate the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth in a series of programs, including the Ninth Symphony and Missa Solemnis, featuring our magnificent Houston Symphony Chorus. We enjoy each concert we perform and invite you to join us for a season filled with music to spark your imagination and inspire joy in your life!

Within Her Arms Piano Concerto No. 3 Symphony No. 8
Jaws will drop and fingers will fly when International Tchaikovsky Competition silver medalist George Li’s “staggering technical prowess” (The Washington Post) meets Prokofiev’s sizzling, fiendishly difficult concerto. In Dvořák’s genial Symphony No. 8, sunlit melodies burst forth with cheerful zest and folk-flavored charm. Led by acclaimed conductor Xian Zhang, the concerts begin with a powerful, deeply felt elegy by “dazzlingly inventive” (The New York Times) British composer Anna Clyne.
A spectacle to behold. A concert experience to leave you changed. Experience Franz Schmidt’s towering oratorio, which recounts the book of Revelation and its apocalyptic vision of the world’s final destruction. From vivid depictions of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse and the seven trumpets to the final, exultant “Hallelujah,” to hear this work live is to feel its awe-inspiring power. 2 0 2 0–21 S E A S O N | 5

With effervescent grace, melodic appeal, and tenderness that speaks straight to the heart, it’s little wonder Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto ranks among the best loved in the repertoire. The phenomenal Elina Vähälä joins the Symphony, and Finnish conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste leads one of the great late-Romantic symphonies, known for a soaringly majestic theme inspired by swans in flight. 6 | HOUSTON SYMPHONY
No composer plumbs the depths of the human experience more fearlessly or wholeheartedly than Tchaikovsky, and his Fifth Symphony surges with unbridled passion, candid emotion, and balletic grace on its journey from darkness to light. Plus, fearless and dynamic violinist Carolin Widmann makes her Houston Symphony debut with Prokofiev’s lively and lyrical concerto.
Andrés Orozco-Estrada, conductor Symphony No. 9
As long as there have been humans there has been art, and as long as there has been art, it has confronted the mysteries and exalted the splendors that lie at the heart of what it means to be human itself. No composer did this more profoundly than Mahler, and no Mahler symphony reaches the emotional depths of his final completed work, Symphony No. 9. Andrés Orozco-Estrada leads this moving meditation on life and death, which ends with a breathtaking descent into rapt silence.

No music captures the passion of Shakespeare’s iconic tragedy more powerfully than Prokofiev’s. Korngold practically invented the lush, Hollywood sound we know and love, and Houston Symphony Principal Cellist Brinton Averil Smith draws out every ounce of its tender, opulent warmth and also shares music of French composer Darius Milhaud.
Indulge in a feast of sumptuous French delights! Simone Lamsma performs a feat of dazzling virtuoso strength with three tour de force showpieces: Ravel’s gypsy-inspired whirlwind, Chausson’s dreamy reverie, and Dutilleux’s lyrical Sur le même accord. “From the heart: may it reach the heart.” This was Beethoven’s inscription at the start of his towering mass, Missa Solemnis. For Beethoven, it was a labor of love he considered one of his supreme achievements, working painstakingly over four years, pouring his own profound spirituality into the score, and concluding with an impassioned appeal for peace. One of the most technically demanding works in the repertoire, it pushes the limits for both orchestra and vocalists.
