www.houstonsymphony.org

Every August in Houston Symphony Magazine, we take time to reflect upon the previous concert season and to look ahead with excitement and anticipation at the upcoming season. The views in both directions are especially amazing this year, as we sally forth from a record-breaking Centennial Season into the electric Inaugural Season of Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada, who will propel us into our second century. Among the records shattered in our Centennial Season, the Houston Symphony attracted more music lovers—63,000 to be precise—than ever to our annual series of free summer concerts, including five ExxonMobil Summer Symphony Nights concerts at Miller Outdoor Theatre and nine Summer Neighborhood Concerts. Our ticketed concerts at Jones Hall also saw record numbers, with singleticket sales outpacing the previous season by 28 percent. The backbone, though, of this world-class orchestra is our incredible group of loyal patrons and donors. In other words, you make the Houston Symphony possible. Thank you for a recordbreaking Centennial Campaign, in which your generous donations totaled $16.4 million in support for your Houston Symphony. Because our gratitude extends beyond words, we also express our thanks musically at a very special Donor Appreciation Concert on August 28. Looking ahead to the 2014-15 Season, we are especially excited by the alignment between the Symphony’s vision of community connection and education and the philosophy of accessibility and shared experience that Andrés brings to his role as Music Director. This alignment manifests itself not only in bolstered commitment to our innovative Education and Community Engagement programs, but also in heightened interaction between orchestra and audience, such as in this season’s intimate concert series, “Musically Speaking with Andrés.” We hope that you will share in our excitement for the season ahead and that you will help us welcome Andrés to Houston during the ¡Bienvenido, Andrés! weekend, September 12-14. Please read more about the concerts and events on page 12. We look forward to seeing you soon at Jones Hall as the 2014-15 Season commences. And again, we thank you for making it all possible!

Looking BACK on the 2013-14 season

Happy Birthday to Us!

The 2013-14 Centennial Season officially began on June 21, 2013, with a free concert honoring the exact 100th birthday of the orchestra. This milestone celebration—complete with fireworks—attracted an amazing audience of 17,000 to Miller Outdoor Theatre. Houston Symphony media partners KTRK Channel 13 and Classical 91.7 KUHA FM reached another 250,000 people through live television and radio broadcasts of the program. The momentum and excitement of the blockbuster birthday performance continued with record-breaking attendance for the subsequent ExxonMobil Summer Symphony Nights concert series at Miller Outdoor Theatre, concluding with the annual July 4 Star-Spangled Salute—and more fireworks!

1st Annual Day of Music Starts a New Tradition A tradition was born in the Centennial Season with the first-ever Day of Music at Jones Hall on July 13, 2013. The free day-long festival attracted 10,000 music fans—likely the most people to visit Jones Hall in one day! Five stages featured almost 30 community music groups performing everything from jazz to gospel and Japanese drumming. In between performances, patrons could enjoy food truck fare on Jones Plaza and flex their own musical muscles at harmonica clinics and the Symphony’s Instrument Petting Zoo. On July 12, 2014, this year’s 2nd Annual Day of Music continued the new tradition with six stages, more family activities and twice as many food trucks.

Thanks to you, the Houston Symphony’s Centennial Season saw the most successful fundraising in the orchestra’s history. Nearly 5,000 individual, corporate, foundation and government donors helped the Symphony to record-breaking contributions of $16.4 million in the 2013-14 Season, including $15.03 million in operational support. Special events and related activities raised an unprecedented $4.3 million, including $2.6 million from the Centennial Ball—more than double the total of any previous Symphony Ball. These numbers matter. Your contributions have provided the Symphony with a wonderful foundation to begin its second century of performing life-changing music. Thanks to every one of you who made the Centennial Season a spectacular success!

Thank You for a RecordBreaking Centennial Season!

Looking BACK on the 2013-14 season

Also during the Centennial Season, the Houston Symphony saw a remarkable 28 percent increase in single-ticket sales over the previous season. Several highly acclaimed and well-attended performances helped to drive the increase in sales. In December 2013, cellist Yo-Yo Ma’s performance under the baton of John Williams was the highest grossing concert night in the Symphony’s history. The landmark performance of Mahler’s Symphony of a Thousand in May 2014 brought back Maestro Christoph Eschenbach for two unforgettable and powerful concerts. The Centennial Season also attracted large audiences for unprecedented multimedia concert experiences, including The Planets and The Earth—An HD Odyssey conducted by Andrés Orozco-Estrada and the premiere of La Triste Historia.

Student Concert Series Makes a Difference Music makes a difference in how a child’s brain develops, it helps the brain reach its full potential, and it even helps us learn non-musical concepts. To actively involve students with music in early life, the David Dewhurst Student Concert Series engaged nearly 43,000 students this year through three targeted programs. The newest program, Symphony Scouts, is designed for children ages 3 to 6 by engaging them through active listening, movement, singing and interaction with the performers. The Robbins Foundation Symphony Detective Concerts focus on developing critical thinking skills and incorporate the STEM curriculum for grades 1 through 3, while the Cameron Explorer Concerts reinforce the TEKS curriculum and STAAR testing for social studies through hour-long school-day concerts for students in grades 4 through 6. To learn more about our low-cost student concerts and educational resources, contact musicmatters@houstonsymphony.org.

Thousands Enjoy Summer Neighborhood Concerts This summer, the Houston Symphony continued its commitment to the community with its annual Summer Neighborhood Concert series (formerly called Sounds Like Fun! concerts). Performed at 10 community venues during June, the free concerts reached nearly 7,000 Houstonians in their own backyards, including performances at the Chinese Community Center, Cinco Ranch High School, Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church and Ripley House Neighborhood Center. Led by Associate Conductor Robert Franz, the Summer Neighborhood Concerts are relaxed, dynamic and family-oriented. This year’s multicultural program included works ranging from Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony to William Grant Still’s “Afro-American Symphony.” Expect to see us out in communities across Houston next summer, and make plans to catch one of our many free concerts!

¡Bienvenido, Andrés!

With excitement and anticipation, we officially welcome Andrés Orozco-Estrada as Music Director during the ¡Bienvenido, Andrés! weekend on September 12, 13 and 14. The celebration opens with a free community performance on Friday at Miller Outdoor Theatre (broadcast live on ABC13), followed on Saturday by the Opening Night Gala at The Corinthian and Jones Hall. British trumpet soloist Alison Balsom will perform at the Opening Night Concert that features Mussorgsky/Ravel’s Pictures at an Exhibition (broadcast live on Classical 91.7 FM). On Sunday, the celebration closes with a free community performance at Jones Hall—titled “Fiesta Sinfonica Con Andrés” —in salute to Hispanic Heritage Month. Houston First is our “Music Director Launch Presenting Partner.”

Building Connections through Music

Not only do we look forward to the flourishing relationship with our Symphony musicians that Andrés will continue to build during his Inaugural Season, we are invigorated by his emphasis on the many other relationships that contribute to the rich experience of orchestral music. Connections among conductor, musicians, composers and audiences are all essential to this experience. To build and nurture these connections, Andrés’ Inaugural Season introduces several fresh programming concepts. The three-concert “Musically Speaking with Andrés” series will allow conductor, musicians and audience members to explore the music collectively in an intimate, fun and interesting format. Think of Andrés as your tour guide! Also this season, Andrés commences a three-year cycle of Beethoven’s nine symphonies with performances of Symphonies No. 1, 4 and 5 in November. Composer cycles are a thoughtful approach to not only strengthen musicians’ connection with each composer, but to also develop and refine the communication between conductor and musicians. Truly magical moments are in store when conductor and musicians share a unified vision of a composer’s body of work! And with the world premiere of a commissioned work in September, Karnavalingo, the Houston Symphony commences a three-year association with Composer-inResidence Gabriela Lena Frank. Our association with Frank will foster connections among the composer, orchestra, conductor and audiences so that we may all experience her exciting new work together.

Lang Lang Joins Andrés—One Night Only!

No contemporary artist has made more of an impact on the classical music world than Lang Lang. He has ascended to enormous popularity and has earned nicknames such as the classical music “rock star” by The Wall Street Journal and landed a coveted spot on Time magazine’s list of the “100 Most Influential People in the World.” Lang Lang, who plays with dazzling technique and charisma, has been characterized for his “sensitive” yet “deeply human” performances and brings his colossal talent to Jones Hall to help close out the 2014-15 season on May 12, 2015.

Family Concerts A lifelong love of music begins by joining Associate Conductor Robert Franz and the Houston Symphony on Saturday mornings! This season’s Family Concerts include “African Safari with Music from The Lion King,” “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” with narrator Mirron Willis, “Star Wars and More!” and “School House Rock!” Each 50-minute concert is held at Jones Hall on Saturday mornings with two start times: 10 am and 11:30 am. Learn more at www.houstonsymphony.org, including details about subscription packages starting at $54.

In his 15th season as Principal Pops Conductor, Michael Krajewski will continue to delight audiences with his clever humor and entertaining programs. In the season opener, Mike conducts the orchestra in a performance with Tony Award®-winner Jason Alexander. The evening of music and laughs will be Alexander’s first-ever symphonic performance in Texas, and it will include songs from Broadway’s Music Man, Pippin and Merrily We Roll Along. Mike brings his magic touch to five more performances with the Houston Symphony this season, including “Ragtime, Blues & All That Jazz,” featuring powerful trumpeter Byron Stripling; “Blockbuster Film Scores,” including music of Forrest Gump, Titanic and Avatar; “U.K. Rocks: From the Beatles to Adele” and “The PAINTJAM Concert Experience,” featuring internationally acclaimed Houston-based speed painter Dan Dunn. And of course, make plans to ring in the holiday season with Mike’s annual “Very Merry Pops” in December! Conductor Steven Reineke also returns this year for two must-see Pops performances. Along with singer/ comic Nicole Parker from MADtv, Steven will celebrate some of television’s most memorable music in September with “TV’s Greatest Hits.” In January, “triple threat” and Tony Award®-winning singer, actress and dancer Sutton Foster, who starred in Broadway’s Thoroughly Modern Millie, Anything Goes and Shrek: The Musical, joins Steven and the orchestra in a powerhouse song and dance extravaganza that is not to be missed! The 2014-15 Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pops at Jones Hall series is generously supported by presenting sponsor BBVA Compass.

Donor Appreciation Concert Houston Symphony Says ‘Thank You’—with Music! In this evening’s one-night-only Donor Appreciation Concert, the music for the program was chosen, not by the orchestra’s artistic leadership, but by you. This concert is the Symphony’s special way of thanking supporters for your record-breaking Annual Fund contributions, totaling $10.7 million, during the 2013-14 Centennial Season. The concert is the brainchild of Mark Hanson—in fact, he’s wanted to honor donors with such a concert since arriving as the Houston Symphony’s Executive Director and CEO in 2010. “Donors are the lifeblood of the Symphony,” says Mark. “Our donors are passionate and knowledgeable about symphonic music. They have assembled a wonderful program for August 28, and we look forward to expressing our thanks through this special performance.” An initial list of 20 pieces was assembled by Aurelie Desmarais, Chief of Artistic Planning, and Lesley Sabol, Director, Popular Programming. Donors voted online or by phone and identified up to five pieces they wanted to hear. The six pieces that garnered the greatest response were programmed for the concert. The Donor Appreciation Concert caps off a busy slate of exclusive donor events throughout the Centennial Season. For instance, on November 22, famed percussionist and Houston Symphony guest artist Colin Currie gave an onstage demonstration and hosted a Q&A session for 130 Symphony supporters. On February 15, members of the Legacy Society, donors who have made provisions for the Symphony in their estate plans, experienced a special afternoon with beloved pianist Emanuel Ax. Also, donors were invited to an intimate panel conversation on April 9 about Gustav Mahler’s Eighth Symphony (Symphony of a Thousand), one of the most epic compositions for the orchestral repertoire. The Houston Symphony thanks everyone who made the Annual Fund a wonderful success in the Centennial year. And thank you for letting us show our appreciation. Your support has allowed the orchestra to enrich the lives of more than 333,000 Houstonians during our 100th season. Our Donor Appreciation Concert is in your honor, and we hope you enjoy it. For information on how to contribute to the Houston Symphony’s Annual Fund, please contact Darryl de Mello, Associate Director, Annual Fund, at (713) 337-8529 or darryl. demello@houstonsymphony.org.
