LATE SEATING In consideration of audience members, the Houston Symphony makes every effort to begin concerts on time. Ushers will assist with late seating at pre-designated intervals. You may be asked to sit in a location other than your ticketed seat until the end of that portion of the concert. You will be able to move to your ticketed seat at the concert break. CHILDREN AT CONCERTS In consideration of our patrons, we ask that children be 6 years and older to attend Houston Symphony concerts. Children of all ages, including infants, are admitted to Family Concerts. Any child over age 1 must have a ticket for those performances. Now that our memorable and successful 2014-15 season—Andrés Orozco-Estrada’s first as our Music Director—has drawn to a close, we are excited to share some details regarding the corresponding fiscal year that concluded May 31, 2015. First, it is hard to believe this year marks the final year of our Five-Year Financial Plan, which has transformed the organization’s financial position. In total, the generous support of nearly 5,000 donors like you enabled the Symphony to raise more than $16 million, a record amount of contributed income. We are grateful for the incredible group of loyal donors, subscribers and patrons who make the Houston Symphony’s mission possible. Thank you! While the year-end audit won’t be completed until early September, we are confident that the Symphony successfully balanced its overall budget for a fifth consecutive year. We extend our special thanks to Margaret Alkek Williams and Gary and Marian Beauchamp, who in the final two weeks of the campaign made significant commitments to the Sustainability Fund. This fiscal success was also made possible through some extraordinary year-end contributions from a generous group of Symphony Board members and donors who made gifts of $25,000 or more. This group included Jan Barrow, The Brown Foundation Inc., Clare Glassell, the Albert and Ethel Herzstein Foundation, Mr. Monzer Hourani, Rochelle and Max Levit, Cora Sue and Harry Mach, Christie and Billy McCartney, John Neighbors, Sherry and Jim Smith and Phoebe and Bobby Tudor. Together, this group contributed almost $2 million to ensure the 2014-15 season was a financial success. Further enhancing the Symphony’s financial stability, 20 members of the Symphony Board and donor family made multi-year pledges and commitments totaling almost $11 million in support of our new strategic plan, Vision 2025. The arrival of Andrés as our Music Director led to record-setting Classical single-ticket sales, exceeding last season’s results by 11 percent. Additionally, the number of buying Hispanic households increased by nearly 8 percent and Millennial and Gen X households by more than 10 percent. The continuation of Robert Franz’ and Mike Krajewski’s tenures led to an increase in Family Concert sales by 29 percent and Pops sales that are already running 8 percent ahead for the coming season. We applaud you—our donors—along with our talented musicians, chorus members and guest artists. We hope you will join us at a special Donor Appreciation Concert on September 2 (page 20). ANDRÉS OROZCO-ESTRADA, MUSIC DIRECTOR

Houston Symphony Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada began his tenure in the 2014-15 season. He immediately established a dynamic presence on the podium and a deep bond with the musicians of the orchestra. Andrés carefully curates his programs to feature engaging combinations of classical masterworks paired with the music of today, significant artistic collaborations with composers and guest artists, and innovative use of multimedia and visual effects, all in order to make meaningful connections with the audience. A natural communicator, Andrés will expand on this foundation in the 2015-16 season and plans to engage even more in direct conversation with the audience. Among his new initiatives will be “On Stage Insights with Andrés,” which will feature casual commentary by Andrés and soloists from the stage. On the recording front, Andrés and the Symphony are recording the last four great symphonies of Antonín Dvorˇák, the first of which will be released in fall 2015. Andrés has also spearheaded a cultural exchange and partnership with the Filarmónica Joven de Colombia. Born in Medellín, Colombia, Andrés began his musical studies on the violin and started conducting at age 15. At 19, he entered

the Vienna Music Academy, where he studied with Uroš Lajovic (pupil of the legendary Hans Swarowsky), and completed his degree with distinction conducting the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Musikverein. Andrés burst on the international scene with two substitutions with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra: the first, his debut in 2010, standing in for Esa-Pekka Salonen, and then in 2012, substituting for Riccardo Muti at the Musikverein. He has worked with the most prominent European orchestras, most recently the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Orchestre National de France and Oslo Philharmonic. In addition to his post in Houston, Andrés is chief conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. In the 2015-16 season, he will make his official subscription series debut with the Vienna Philharmonic, as well as the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tonhalle-Orchestra Zurich, the Cleveland Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and he will become principal guest conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
THE NEW MUSIC DIRECTOR FUND The New Music Director Fund supports the concert activities of Andrés Orozco-Estrada in his year as Music Director Designate (201314 Centennial Season) and his first years as Music Director of the Houston Symphony (2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons). Looking Back on the 2014-15 Season

Andrés’ Inaugural Season Wow! The theme of Andrés’ inaugural season, Conducting Electricity, was certainly not an overstatement. During his first season, Andrés cultivated a powerful artistic bond with Houston Symphony musicians that resulted in the many electric performances we have been so fortunate to experience—including Andrés’ first opera-in-concert performance with this orchestra of Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio, composer-specific cycles, including Part I of 3 Weeks of Beethoven and a strengthened collaboration with the Houston Symphony Chorus in performances of Mozart’s and Verdi’s Requiems as well as Mahler’s Symphony No. 3. Andrés also introduced new and innovative programming elements, many of which connected audiences more deeply with the music and created ongoing, meaningful connections with increasingly varied and diverse Houston audiences. The 2014-15 season saw the debut of the “Musically Speaking with Andrés” series, in which Andrés and co-host Carlos Botero focused on a single work each evening to provide engaging commentary and often-entertaining role-playing. Devoted to bringing the love of orchestral music to a broader base of Houstonians, Andrés and Carlos presented an installment of “Musically Speaking” entirely in Spanish. And Houstonians are definitely responding to Andrés’ inclusive style and artistic contributions. Houston Symphony Classical single-ticket sales have increased about 11 percent over the previous season. And, significantly, there’s been an 8 percent increase in Hispanic ticket-buyers.

Women Composers Showcased Working within what is typically considered a male-dominated profession, Andrés introduced Houston Symphony patrons to musical works written by two important living women composers. California-born Gabriela Lena Frank was featured in three programs in the 2014-15 season, including a premiere of a composition created in honor of Andrés’ inaugural season. Frank also took up a two-week residency with the Houston Symphony to connect with Symphony audiences in the community. Another American female composer, Jennifer Higdon, was showcased in the Robert Spano-conducted concert in April 2015. Two of her orchestra pieces were featured: Concerto for Orchestra and blue cathedral, an emotionally-charged composition inspired by her younger brother who died of cancer. Both Frank and Higdon were present at the performances to provide insights into their works, as well as to emphasize the importance of new music in the repertoire of the Houston Symphony. An Amazing Fundraising Season

Thanks to you, the Houston Symphony continued the momentum of our Centennial Season fundraising into the 2014-15 season. This support will allow the Symphony to report its fifth consecutive balanced budget as the organization completed the final year of its Five-Year Financial Plan. In total, the generous support of nearly 5,000 individual, corporate, foundation and government donors enabled the Symphony to raise more than $16 million, a record amount of contributed income, in support of our 2014-15 season activities. Further enhancing the Symphony’s financial stability, 20 members of the Symphony Board and donor family made multi-year pledges and commitments totaling almost $11 million in support of our new strategic Bob Peiser, Mark Hanson, Margaret Alkek WIlliams, Stephen Mach, Jesse Tutor plan, Vision 2025, following the plan’s unanimous approval by the Symphony’s Board of Trustees in December 2014. We are especially grateful to Margaret Alkek Williams for her gift of $5 million, the largest gift from an individual to the Symphony in more than a decade. Her gift supports the Sustainability Fund, operations and the Houston Symphony Endowment to endow in perpetuity the Margaret Alkek Williams Executive Director/CEO Chair.

Community Concerts for Diverse Audiences Our Community Concert programming also broke attendance records this season, reaching nearly 8,000 diverse audience members at more than 10 venues throughout Greater Houston. The Houston Symphony’s recent emphasis on culturally specific programming for diverse audiences has clearly helped forge many new connections. In the 2014-15 season, this customized programming included a Black History Month concert that featured the Fisk Jubilee Singers and the CityWide Grassroots Chorus, as well as a Lunar New Year Celebration concert at the Chinese Community Center. Further, this year’s Summer Community Concerts were tailored by venue to include music reflecting Latino, Asian and African-American heritages.
This season’s David Dewhurst Student Concert Series engaged a record-breaking 55,000 students through several targeted programs. The 2014-15 season saw the pilot of our newest program customized for middle-school students. The Middle School Concerts at Jones Hall provide a full-orchestra experience for 6-8 grade band and orchestra students to understand the events and situations that have inspired composers throughout history to write music. We invite educators to learn more about the coming season’s Middle School Concerts, Robbins Foundation Lower-Elementary Concerts and Cameron Upper-Elementary Concerts at houstonsymphony.org. We will also enhance our Upper Elementary and Middle School offerings with optional Pre/Post Concert Visits. Musicians from the Houston Symphony will visit classrooms and ensembles to explore curriculum crafted specifically to complement and strengthen the concert students will attend at Jones Hall. The students will see this musician before the concert, during the concert (where that musician will be performing within the orchestra) and after the concert. Andrés’ Second Season

In his second season with the Houston Symphony, Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada will build upon the excitement and momentum he established in his inaugural season. “In my second season,” explains Andrés, “I look forward to creating even deeper connections with a diverse community that has already embraced me from all corners of the city. I invite every Houstonian to experience a Symphony concert and allow their eyes and ears to see and hear the beautiful universe that is an orchestra.” Continuing to feature engaging combinations of classical masterworks paired with the music of today, Andrés has curated a season that includes Part II of 3 Weeks of Beethoven, several works by Dvorˇák and Mahler’s Symphony No. 5. Paired with Mahler on the program for the first subscription concert of the season is the world premiere of an orchestral version of composer John Corigliano’s Stomp. Also this season, Andrés and the orchestra commence the second year of a four-year concentration on the symphonies of Charles Ives, considered by many an “American Original.” In October, Andrés conducts Ives’ Symphony No. 2. And to further build connections among composer, conductor, music and audience, Andrés launches a new feature with this performance—On-Stage Insights with Andrés—during which both he and the composer will offer insights and brief commentary about the music during the concert. For On-Stage Insights with Andrés in March, we are excited to welcome back Composerin-Residence Gabriela Lena Frank. Andrés and Gabriela come together with our musicians to perform and present Gabriela’s viola concerto La Llorona, commissioned by the Houston Symphony in 2007 for our Principal Viola, Wayne Brooks.
Take the Houston Symphony Home with You The Symphony’s upcoming classical season will conclude with Dvorˇák’s Symphony No. 9 as part of the world premiere of The Cosmos—An HD Odyssey, the third and final film project in the HD Odyssey trilogy that began with The Planets and The Earth. Developed in conjunction with Duncan Copp, celebrated documentary filmmaker of projects for BBC, PBS/Nova and National Geographic, The Cosmos is set to the score of Dvorˇák’s Symphony No. 9, From the New World, and presents breathtaking HD images from NASA of far distant galaxies, nebulae and other astronomical wonders from the Hubble Space Telescope. As with The Planets and The Earth, The Cosmos will be commercially released on DVD and Blu-ray. In addition to The Cosmos—An HD Odyssey, we are involved in several new recording projects that will bring the Houston Symphony to even more music lovers. In a new partnership with Dutch recording label PENTATONE, Andrés and the orchestra are recording the last four great symphonies of Dvorˇák. The first recording, featuring the Seventh and Eighth Symphonies, is planned to be released later this fall. Beyond commercial recordings, the Symphony will be heard in a series of six national radio broadcasts in conjunction with American Public Media’s SymphonyCast and Performance Today. Locally, the Houston Symphony continues its broadcast presence on Houston Public Media’s Classical 91.7 with a weekly Wednesday night broadcast of Houston Symphony concerts from the current and previous seasons. 18

Community-Embedded Musicians Program

Our Education and Community Programming team continues its vital mission to help people learn about and engage with music, making it a relevant and integral part of their lives. Earlier this year, the Houston Symphony announced a groundbreaking program to recruit four new string players as part of an initiative to embed musicians more deeply in the community and to better represent and serve the diverse population of Greater Houston. The four musicians will devote the majority of their time to off-stage education and community programs through individual and small ensemble work in schools, neighborhoods and health care settings. Their work will enable the Symphony to increase the quality and quantity of music education in Greater Houston, helping students develop essential life skills, including problem-solving, critical thinking, teamwork and perseverance.
BBVA Compass POPS The upcoming BBVA Compass POPS season reflects talented guest performers and concert themes traversing beloved music of the last eight decades. Highlights include: Matthew Morrison from the hit TV show Glee; a world-premiere tribute to Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Carole King; a Centennial celebration of American legend Frank Sinatra’s birthday; Singin’ in the Rain—Film with Live Orchestra; and a Beatles tribute to the group 50 years after it first performed at the Sam Houston Coliseum in 1965. The season will conclude with a newly curated Houston Symphony show encapsulating three decades of rock, a compilation concert featuring music of bands and acts of the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s, in Journey, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac & More.

Family Concerts A lifelong love of music begins by joining the Houston Symphony on Saturday mornings! Our four-concert Family Series offers a mix of CONCERTS fun and thematic orchestral music to engage young minds. This season’s Family Concerts include Ghostbusters & Ghouls (on Halloween, no less!), A Frosty & Frozen Christmas, Superheroes at the Symphony and Dreams Come True—with music from The Little Mermaid. Each 50-minute concert is held at Jones Hall on Saturday mornings at two start times: 10am and 11:30am. This season, Associate Conductor Robert Franz leads three of the four programs.

MICHAEL KRAJEWSKI, conductor Known for his entertaining programs and clever humor, Michael Krajewski is a much sought after conductor of symphonic pops. In addition to his position as principal pops conductor of the Houston Symphony, he serves the same role in Jacksonville and Atlanta and is the newly appointed music director of The Philly Pops. As a guest conductor, Mike has performed with the Cleveland and Philadelphia Orchestras; the Boston and Cincinnati Pops; the San Francisco, Seattle and St. Louis Symphonies; the Baltimore, Detroit, Indianapolis, Dallas, Pittsburgh and National Symphony Orchestras, and numerous other orchestras across the United States. In Canada, he has led Ottawa’s National Arts Centre Orchestra; the Toronto, Edmonton and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestras; the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. Other international appearances include performances in Dublin and Belfast with the Ulster Orchestra as well as performances with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and this season’s debut with Spain’s Bilbao Symphony Orchestra. With degrees from Wayne State University in Detroit and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Michael furthered his training at the Pierre Monteux School for Conductors. He lives in Orlando, Florida, with his wife, Darcy. When not conducting, he enjoys travel, photography and solving crossword puzzles. August 2015 21
