LETTER TO PATRONS

On behalf of the entire Houston Symphony family, we wish you and your family happy holidays! Thank you for making the Symphony a part of your plans during this special time of the year. We hope you look forward to two of our holiday performance traditions—Very Merry Pops with Principal Pops Conductor Mike Krajewski and Handel’s Messiah—as much as we do. If you are still searching for that perfect gift for the Symphony fan in your life, we’re excited to announce the release of The Earth—An HD Odyssey on DVD and Blu-ray. In this second installment of our HD Odyssey film trilogy, the orchestra brings to life striking images of our planet captured by NASA’s missions to Earth’s orbit. To read more about this majestic multimedia experience, please turn to page 9 of this issue. We are fortunate to have NASA’s Johnson Space Center as a neighbor, and the HD Odyssey series exemplifies the Symphony’s focus on strengthening connections with our local community. In “Conversation with Bob Peiser” on page 8, the importance of these connections comes to light as we strive to become the most accessible top 10 orchestra in the nation. Another way we forge these meaningful connections is through our David Dewhurst Student Concert Series, including the launch of a new program especially for band and orchestra students in middle school. The launch of this program in October was an amazing success. Associate Conductor Robert Franz talks about the value of these concerts for Houston-area middle school student-musicians on page 30. October also marked a milestone in the Houston Symphony’s valued partnership with the Mexican Institute of Greater Houston. In its 10th year, the free Lunada concert at Miller Outdoor Theatre on October 11 drew its largest audience ever. Conductor Alejandro Gutiérrez led the orchestra, and dancers from Luna Tango Productions—Susana Collins and Richie Hubsher—reached many new audience members through this multi-discipline orchestral experience. Lastly, as we prepare to welcome the New Year, our resolution is to continue to connect with you and with new audiences—both here at Jones Hall and throughout the community. Enjoy tonight’s performance and have a wonderful holiday season!

Andrés Orozco-Estrada, born in Colombia and trained in Vienna, is one of the most sought after conductors of his generation. He begins his tenure as the Houston Symphony’s 15th Music Director this season. In addition to his appointment in Houston, Andrés takes up the position of chief conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra during the 2014-15 season, and he will become principal guest conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra beginning in the 2015-16 season. Since the 2009-10 season, he has held the post of music director of the Tonkünstler Orchester Niederösterreich, one of the most important institutions of traditional Austrian music culture, which holds subscription series at the Vienna Musikverein and is orchestra-in-residence at the Grafenegg Festival. He will conclude his tenure with the Tonkünstler Orchestra in summer 2015. From 2009 through 2013, Andrés was also principal conductor at the Basque National Orchestra in San Sebastián, Spain. As a guest conductor, he regularly works with the world’s most prominent orchestras, including the Vienna, Munich, London, Rotterdam, Royal Stockholm and La Scala Philharmonic Orchestras; Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra; Mahler Chamber Orchestra; London, City of Birmingham and Gothenburg Symphony Orchestras; the Santa Cecilia Orchestra in Rome; Radio Symphony Orchestra of Hamburg; the Orchestre National de France; Verbier Festival

Orchestra; and the St. Louis and Oregon Symphonies. Following his debut with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 2010, Andrés was hailed “a brilliant stand-in” for EsaPekka Salonen and celebrated as an “eminent talent” by Austria’s Wiener Zeitung and Die Presse. In November 2012, Andrés stepped in once again with just one rehearsal’s notice to conduct the Vienna Philharmonic in the Musikverein for Riccardo Muti and was praised as a “stand-in worth his weight in gold” and “an inspired master of communication” by the Viennese daily newspapers Kurier and Der Standard. In the 2015-16 season, he will make his official debut with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra on its subscription season. Born in 1977 in Medellín (Colombia), Andrés began his musical studies on the violin and had his first conducting lessons at age 15. In 1997, he moved to Vienna where he joined the conducting class of Uroš Lajovic, pupil of the legendary Hans Swarowsky, at the renowned Vienna Music Academy and completed his degree with distinction by conducting the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Vienna Musikverein. The emphasis of his artistic work lies in the Romantic repertoire and Viennese classics. At the same time, Andrés shows a keen interest in contemporary music and regularly performs premieres of Austrian composers, as well as compositions of Spanish and South American origin. He currently lives in Vienna.

A CONVERSATION WITH SYMPHONY SOCIETY BOARD PRESIDENT BOB PEISER HSM: Speaking as Board President, what does the arrival of Andrés mean to the orchestra, the organization and the city? BP: Andrés is a wonderful ambassador for our Symphony. He will forge connections with the entire Houston community. In addition, he is an excellent conductor who is well respected by our musicians, and he will facilitate even greater artistic achievements.

HSM: What have been your favorite musical experiences over the past three years?

Nancy and Bob Peiser arrive for the Centennial Ball.

Houston Symphony Magazine: You’ve served as President of the Houston Symphony Board during an eventful period, beginning in June 2012. What Symphony accomplishments during your tenure make you most proud? Bob Peiser: There are so many it is difficult to isolate a few, but I’ll try. For one, I’m proud of the huge success of the Centennial Season celebration. The publicity surrounding this momentous season has increased awareness of the Houston Symphony and its service to all Houstonians. Likewise, the arrival of Andrés OrozcoEstrada as our new Music Director has energized our patrons, our Board, our musicians and our staff. I’m also pleased with the healthy and respectful dialogue we have maintained with our musicians, as evidenced this past summer by the early extension of a new collective bargaining agreement. Another point of pride for the organization is the soon-to-becompleted 10-year strategic plan. The plan will provide a framework for growing the Houston Symphony into the United States’ mostaccessible Top 10 orchestra. To do so, the 10-year plan focuses on enhancing our relevance to the entire community, increasing the caliber our artistic performance even further, enhancing our reputation and solidifying our financial condition. Relatedly, the Symphony has already demonstrated an increased relevance throughout the Greater Houston area by significantly increasing our community activities and educational programs. Taken together, all of these achievements raise the bar for us as we continue this fine work by building on our momentum to ensure continued artistic, community and financial success. HSM: What role has the Board played in the Houston Symphony’s recent successes? BP: The Board is made up of a great group of dedicated volunteers who contribute both their financial resources and valuable time. Members are involved in various committees that supplement our staff’s fine work in helping the Symphony achieve its goals of great performances, community engagement and strong financial discipline. We couldn’t do this without them.

www.houstonsymphony.org

BP: At the start of the 2012-13 season, the tour to Moscow for the Festival of the World’s Symphony Orchestras was a real highlight. Ours was the first American orchestra to participate in the festival, and to hear our musicians play Russian music for a Russian audience in a Russian concert hall was very special. I’ve also enjoyed hearing Scheherazade—in my opinion, one of the most beautiful works of music—performed twice over the last three seasons. I especially enjoy pieces like Scheherazade that provide multiple spotlights for our orchestra’s wonderful musicians. For the same reason, I loved the performance of The Four Seasons. HSM: What have you learned so far during your tenure as President of the Houston Symphony Board? BP: The balance between mission and business purpose is an interesting aspect of what we do. In some ways, the Symphony is a business that needs to be run in a disciplined manner to ensure its financial sustainability. At the same time, we all need to recognize that it exists to allow the residents of Houston the opportunity to listen to beautiful music and to help our children learn the joys of such music. HSM: Your three-year term comes to an end on May 31, 2015. How do you want your leadership to be remembered? BP: I’d like everyone to think about that balance. We have built on the successful accomplishments of past leadership to continue our momentum of strong artistic programming and meaningful community projects, while also moving toward a balanced budget and financial sustainability. HSM: Is there any advice you would give to your successor? BP: If done correctly, this is a difficult yet very rewarding position. You deal with a wide range of stakeholders. Our extraordinarily talented musicians deserve the highest respect; this organization cannot thrive without them. At the same time, a diverse group of trustees has varying ideas about how to contribute to the organization, and their talents can contribute in many different ways. Just as important, you need to help the Symphony’s management and staff to be their best. All members of the organization should be encouraged to relentlessly strive to build a lasting legacy to the art form, while simultaneously building bridges to all facets of the Houston community. In doing so, we all play a part in positioning our Houston Symphony as the most-accessible Top 10 orchestra in the nation.

The Earth—An HD Odyssey. Available Now! Following the international success of The Planets—An HD Odyssey, the Houston Symphony and UK-based documentary filmmaker Duncan Copp have again joined forces to produce a stunning sequel: The Earth—An HD Odyssey. Available on DVD and Blu-ray, the film is the second in the Houston Symphony’s trilogy of multimedia concert experiences and the precursor to the forthcoming The Cosmos—An HD Odyssey. Companion education materials with lesson plans and bonus videos were also created for use in the classroom. As Houstonians, we are privileged to have NASA’s Johnson Space Center in our own backyard, and the HD Odyssey series is one example of the Symphony’s focus on strengthening community connections. The multimedia series, which features spectacular NASA film footage, also allows the Symphony to explore new ways to present orchestral music and to ultimately reach new audiences. Set to the timeless music of Also Sprach Zarathustra by Richard Strauss, The Earth—An HD Odyssey weaves the Symphony’s superb performance, led by Andrés Orozco-Estrada, and striking high-definition images of our planet, many never before reproduced in a film production. The resulting multisensory experience reveals our world in unprecedented detail and exquisite beauty. As a prelude, John Adams’ Short Ride in a Fast Machine sets the tempo as we take an exhilarating trip into orbit on-board the space shuttle. The piece, married with breathtaking NASA film footage, gives a thrilling sense of what it’s like to ride into space. DONOR PROFILE: CATHERINE AND MATT MATTHEWS

Catherine and Matt Matthews joined the Young Associates Council during the 2013-14 season. The Young Associates Council is a group of young philanthropists who support the Houston Symphony through the Annual Fund, special fundraising events and concert attendance. Catherine is a member of the Steering Committee. Houston Symphony Magazine: Why is supporting the Houston Symphony important to you? Matt: Music was a big thing in my house. My parents had a great record collection, and there was almost always something playing. Catherine and I have continued that tradition with our boys. We got a record player last year, and listening to vinyl records has become a big family event since then. The boys have kind of hijacked it, honestly. They also love the Houston Symphony Family Concerts! Catherine: Music was also a large part of my childhood. My father’s mother composed beautiful classical piano pieces, and my mother’s mom was Miss Sunshine Galveston, a singing radio personality. My mother has played the piano since she was young, and she encouraged us to sing while she played. When she was expecting me, the fourth of five children, she picked up the guitar for the first time. She still plays! When music is a passion, nothing can stop one from pursuing it. My parents were members of the Beaumont Symphony Orchestra before I was born, and my mother eventually served as president. My parents brought my siblings and me to those concerts, exposing us to orchestral music at a young age. This planted the seed for our involvement with the Houston Symphony. Our continued on page 17

DONOR PROFILE: CATHERINE AND MATT MATTHEWS continued from page 14 participation with the Young Associates Council has made bringing our boys to concerts even more special. HSM: Do you have any favorite musicians, or a favorite Houston Symphony concert? Matt: My first love was, and always will be, rock-n-roll. But, I also grew up listening to a lot of blues, folk and country music, and then later, I got into punk and electronic music. My first real exposure to symphonies was in high school when I started listening to classical music while I studied. That’s something I still do today while I’m working—listening to instrumental music, whether it be classical, jazz, electronic, surf rock or ambient, Brian Eno-type things. My favorite Houston Symphony concert last year was The Planets and The Earth—it was like the beautiful sister of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Catherine: Favorite musicians? Wow! That’s tough. I love Americana/ folk/old country—I’m a Texas girl after all! I also love some new country, classical, jazz, calypso, show tunes, opera—and the list goes on. Matt and I really enjoy gospel music and had a large southern gospel choir at our wedding. The memory of walking out to “Oh, Happy Day” is one I’ll forever cherish. My favorite Houston Symphony concert was “Luck be a Lady” last fall. It was such a fun concert. We also got to meet guest vocalists Megan Hilty and Aaron Lazar afterward, who were both lovely!

HSM: What would you share with others about the Young Associates Council? Catherine and Matt: Music and our community are so important to us that when we had the opportunity to get involved with the Young Associates Council, it was a no-brainer. Houston is a world-class city, and we want it to maintain a Symphony of equal quality in the future. The surest way to make that happen is to get more young people exposed to and involved with the Houston Symphony. We feel like we’ve been the big winners in the deal! It’s an honor to be associated with the Symphony and the remarkable people who are part of the Young Associates Council. It’s a very diverse, interesting and talented group of men and women. And we’ve made some wonderful friends who we might not have met were it not for the Young Associates Council. We have educational and fun events almost monthly. It’s a great way to meet professionals and community builders who are balancing involvement in the arts community with important professional and family obligations and responsibilities. We all have limited resources of time and energy—and spending some of ours with this group has proven very worthwhile. We encourage anyone interested to find out more about it! In a Tweet. Whatever their other holiday traditions, lovers of great music can’t let December pass without having Handel’s Messiah stir their souls. The Back Story. When Handel was invited to produce a concert series in Dublin in 1741-42, he leapt at the opportunity to escape the failing fortunes of his operatic ventures in London. The highpoint of his nine months in Ireland was the premiere of his oratorio Messiah. He composed it before he left London, in only about three weeks, using a libretto by his colleague Charles Jennens that incorporated numerous Biblical passages. The oratorio is in three sections. The first relates to the prophecy of Christ’s coming and the circumstances of his birth; the second to the vicissitudes of his life and death; and the third to the implications of the resurrection and the promise of redemption. The premiere, on April 13, 1742, was given as a benefit for various charities involved with jails and hospitals. After the open rehearsal, the Dublin News Letter pronounced that the new oratorio “in the opinion of the best judges, far surpasses anything of that Nature, which has been performed in this or any other Kingdom.” Another newspaper printed a plea to persons planning to attend the official premiere: “Many Ladies and Gentlemen who are well-wishers to the Noble and Grand Charity for which this Oratorio was composed, request it as a Favour, that the Ladies who honour this Performance with their Presence would be pleased to come without Hoops as it will greatly encrease the Charity, by making Room for more Company.” And in a follow-up article: “The Gentlemen are desired to come without their Swords, to increase audience accommodation yet further.” The work’s reputation quickly spread to London, which had to wait almost a year to hear it. That event finally took place on March 23, 1743, at Covent Garden. Controversy crept in, perhaps fueled by Jennens, who had a falling-out with Handel. The Universal Spectator questioned the propriety of performing such a sacred work in any setting but a church. “An Oratorio,” the article ran, “either is an Act of Religion, or it is not; if it is, I ask if the Playhouse is a fit Temple to perform it in, or a Company of Players fit Ministers of God’s Word, for in that Case such they are made … In the other Case, if it is not perform’d as an Act of Religion, but for Diversion and Amusement only (and indeed I believe few or none go to an Oratorio out of Devotion), what a Prophanation of God’s Name and Word is this, to make so light Use of them?” Many a London wag lent his voice to the ensuing fray, in poetry as well as prose, but audiences seem to have enjoyed Handel’s oratorio all the more for the debate it provoked. The Instruments. 2 oboes, bassoon, 2 trumpets, timpani, strings, basso continuo (including organ and harpsichord), plus 4 vocal soloists—soprano, contralto (here a countertenor), tenor and bass-baritone—and chorus What to Listen For. Handel revised Messiah to accommodate the practical requirements of

NOTES | HANDEL’S MESSIAH | DECEMBER 18-21 different soloists and instrumental ensembles. From one revival to the next, we find variations involving which pieces are sung and in what order, which solo items are assigned to which vocal soloist, even which competing versions of individual movements should be used. No work in the standard repertoire offers such a buffet of choices for performers. This performance includes 46 of the possible 53 numbers. In its early decades, Messiah was viewed as an Easter piece. Today, we are far more likely to hear it during the Christmas season. Part One, which focuses on the birth of Jesus, is often given as a stand-alone work, and many of its numbers are among the score’s most familiar. Here Handel shows his skill with carefully wrought word-painting. Notice how the tenor illustrates the geographical contours mentioned in his aria “Ev’ry Valley,” where his vocal line surges upward to mirror how the valleys become exalted, or how it veers from cragged to smooth to underscore “the rough places plain.” Similarly, the bassbaritone begins his aria “The People that Walked in Darkness” in deep shadows, his melody proceeding starkly until the harmony suddenly fills out at the moment where the people “have seen a great light.” In this opening chapter we encounter the rustic peacefulness of the “Pastoral Symphony,” the soprano’s irresistible narrative of shepherds and angels, and the joy-filled choruses “And the Glory of the Lord” and “For Unto Us a Child is Born.” Part Two, a subdued meditation on the Passion, includes the countertenor’s profoundly affecting aria “He was Despised” and concludes with the score’s most famous segment, the ebullient “Hallelujah” Chorus. (Here, some listeners traditionally leap to their feet in imitation of the 18th-century audience—so the myth goes—when King George II entered his royal box at just that moment.) Hope is the watchword in Part Three, glimpsed in the gleaming optimism of the soprano’s aria “I Know that my Redeemer Liveth” and in the acclamations of the chorus “Worthy is the Lamb” and the uplifting phrases of the final “Amen” fugue. —James M. Keller The printed music for Handel’s Messiah was donated by the Edith F. Bondi Foundation in memory of Edith F. Bondi and Great Uncle Conductor Simon Parmet.

Betsy Cook Weber, Director Sarah Berggren Chorus Manager

BETSY COOK WEBER, director Dr. Betsy Cook Weber, who begins her tenure as director of the Houston Symphony Chorus this season, is professor of music and director of choral studies at the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music. She teaches a full course load, oversees the large and varied choral area at the Moores School and is an internationally active conductor, clinician, adjudicator and lecturer. In 2013, Betsy became the 13th person and first woman to receive the Texas Choral Directors Association’s coveted Texas Choirmaster Award. Under her leadership, The Moores School Concert Chorale has established a reputation as one of the world’s finest collegiate choirs. It has been a featured choir at multiple state and national conventions. Internationally, Chorale has received acclaim at prestigious competitions, including the National Eisteddfod of Wales, winning or placing in every category in which it was entered, and the Florilège Vocal in Tours, France. In May 2013, she led Chorale to a first-place finish as one of only 10 choirs selected worldwide to compete in the famous International Chamber Choir Competition in Marktoberdorf, Germany. She has prepared singers for Da Camera and early music orchestras Ars Lyrica and Mercury Houston. She is routinely called upon to prepare singers for touring shows, including Josh Groban, NBC’s Clash of the Choirs, Telemundo’s Latin Grammys and Star Wars in Concert. Betsy served seven years as assistant and, later, associate director of the Houston Symphony Chorus, helping prepare major works for renowned conductors, including Robert Shaw, Christoph Eschenbach, Roger Wagner, Nicholas McGegan and Christopher Seaman. She holds degrees from the University of North Texas, Westminster Choir College (Princeton, NJ) and the University of Houston.

EducaTIon and Community Engagement programming

David Dewhurst Student Concert Series Brings “Music with a Conscience” to Middle School Student Musicians This year, the Houston Symphony’s David Dewhurst Student Concert Series will host 20 concerts that reach 55,000 Houstonarea students. An exciting new addition to the series is a program designed specifically for middle school band and orchestra students. On October 14, Associate Conductor Robert Franz premiered the new grade-targeted program to 5,423 students from 36 greater Houston area schools. The two concerts sold out quickly, and 3,671 of the students attended the concerts for free. Robert, who is a nationally recognized leader in arts education, brainstormed with the Houston Symphony’s Education and Community Engagement team to develop concerts that resonate specifically with middle school student-musicians. Although a number of students at this age level attend the Cameron Symphony Explorer Concerts that serve students in grades 4–8, the new concerts allow Robert and the orchestra to connect with middle school students at a more cognitively appropriate level. “When students enter middle school,” observes Robert, “they’re reaching a point in their lives when they want to be treated seriously by adults. They’re curious about the world, and they’re trying to find their place in it. They’re also looking for ways to express themselves. They’re ready and eager to attend a more sophisticated concert that includes music that challenges their views of the world and makes them think.” Robert developed the thought-provoking theme, “Music with a Conscience,” for the inaugural concerts. The program featured music written in homage to those who suffered through war, oppression or violence, or by composers whom had themselves suffered through political or religious oppression. The students listened to and thought about the Symphony’s performance that included Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man and Michael Daugherty’s Motor City Triptych—Rosa Parks Boulevard. Guiding the students to discover how music can rise above evil, Robert and the Symphony demonstrated the power of what can be expressed through music. Unique among the Symphony’s student concert series, the middle school concerts target students who currently participate in their school’s band or orchestra programs. Because these students, some of whom have only one or two years’ experience studying music, are focused largely on building their technical skills, they may find it challenging to express themselves through their instruments. “We have a critical role to play,” explains Robert, “in encouraging these students to continue their musical studies, and we see these concerts as an important tool to inspire them to overcome that difficult ‘hump’ during this pivotal time when they make choices to either continue or stop playing their instruments.” The concerts allow the student-musicians to see and hear the incredible members of the Houston Symphony, thus inspiring them and instilling in them a sense of hope that they, too, can achieve this level of self-expression in music. Teachers also recognized the value of the first of our middle-school concerts. Brendon Steber, director of bands at Beck Junior High School, remarked, “Everything about the concert was fantastic! Great music, great musicians, great insight from the podium! I hope that you consider doing this again next year. We will definitely be there.” Allison Conlan, Education Manager for the Houston Symphony, suggests that Brendon and the student-musicians may be in luck: “Based on the overwhelming response and positive feedback for our middle-school pilot program, be on the lookout for more from Robert and the Symphony next season!” 30

BACKSTAGE PASS

Tina Zhang, violin

Other musicians in the family: My parents grew up in a troubled time in China when there wasn’t much opportunity for musical training. No one else in my family performs music professionally. My brother plays piano for fun. If there is such a thing as a family profession, I think most of my cousins (and my brother also) are in some form of engineering. Best thing about being a musician: Hearing amazing concerts all the time! There’s something so special about music making. Some of it is about discipline—learning the notes on my own and figuring out the technical aspect of making it work. But, when the time comes to put it all together in rehearsal, the focus isn’t about me anymore, or my worries or my thoughts; it’s all about the music. I fade, and the music becomes more important than me. Then, at an unexpected moment, there might be a solo of unsurpassed beauty, or a moment of connectedness in which the entire orchestra is agreeing on a common vision. Those moments make all of the work worth it.

Beginnings: I was born in Beijing, China, but I moved to Montreal, Canada, when I was 4 years old. Education: I earned my bachelor’s degrees in music and mathematics at Bard College in New York. I then came to Houston, where I earned my master’s of music at Rice University. With the Houston Symphony: My first performance with the Symphony was the New Year’s Eve concert in December 2011. This is my first job out of school! The 2014-15 performance season: We actually performed one of my favorite pieces last month: Mozart’s Requiem. I put the “Dies Irae” and the “Lacrymosa” movements on a loop and listened to them repeatedly for hours on end. I think that on recordings, choral works tend to lose more in sound quality than, for example, a concerto, in which it’s nice to hear the soloist so clearly. That’s why I was particularly excited to hear the full sound of the orchestra, choir and soloists playing this powerful piece. I’m also looking forward to performing Verdi’s Requiem in March, as well as Mozart’s opera The Abduction from the Seraglio in January.

Notable life moments: Five months after joining the Houston Symphony, I had a car accident that left me unable to play the violin for more than a year. Thankfully, neck surgery fixed the problem completely, but the experience has taught me to cherish every moment I have with music. There is nothing that can replace the feeling of being on stage about to play one of your favorite pieces. Nothing can match the level of excitement and focus that playing music gives me. Outside Jones Hall: You can usually find me hanging out with friends, participating at church, cooking and updating my private cooking blog. Tina Zhang is sponsored by Donna & Tim Shen.

Earliest musical memory: One of my first musical memories is walking past a violinist in the subway on my way to kindergarten. I remember being fascinated by the instrument—by the sound it made and by the way it was played. I wanted to stop and listen as long as I could. After a while, I started to imitate playing the violin with chopsticks during dinner, and that convinced my parents to let me take lessons.
