Our Centennial celebration is officially underway! We had a great kick-off concert at Miller Outdoor Theatre on June 21, our actual 100th birthday. Media partner, ABC 13 KTRK, was a tremendous support—broadcasting the performance live, creating an impactful 30-minute television special about the life of the Houston Symphony and airing many promotional ads for the concert. We were overwhelmed to see an estimated 17,000 Houstonians come out to enjoy the free concert and fireworks! This month, we are back in the air-conditioned comfort of Jones Hall for our Summer in the City concerts. First will be Video Games Live on July 5, where in addition to the film-plus-concert experience, ticket buyers get access to a slew of gaming machines that will be setup throughout the lobby. Next will be The Music of the Rolling Stones followed by two nights of Pixar in Concert featuring the musical scores and exciting film clips from all 13 Pixar films to date. Frankie Valli caps off the summer on July 27 performing his popular hits with the Houston Symphony. July 13 is our inaugural Day of Music, an-all day festival celebrating the musical diversity of Houston. Beginning and ending with Houston Symphony performances, more than 25 other ensembles, including blues, jazz, Celtic, classical guitar, mariachi, percussion, indie rock, baroque, choral and many more, will perform on stages throughout Jones Hall. Food trucks will be set-up across the street at Jones Plaza, and attendees can participate in a harmonica clinic or the Instrument Petting Zoo. Also this month, the orchestra is rehearsing for a one-of-a-kind project that we’ve commissioned for our Centennial. La Triste Historia is a film-plus-concert experience telling a tragic love story during the Mexican Revolution in the 1910s. The avant garde film highlights the Day of the Dead tradition, popular in many Hispanic cultures. Jones Hall will be transformed into the setting of this year’s annual Dia de los Muertos altar exhibit by the Mexican Consulate, a collection of stunning personal displays to passed loved ones. We will welcome back Carlos Miguel Prieto, former associate conductor, to lead the orchestra for the world-premiere weekend on November 1, 2 and 3. Save the date for the annual Theater District Open House on August 25, organized by the Houston Downtown Alliance. We’ll have backstage tours, children’s craft tables, special ticket offers and a free Houston Symphony concert at 4 p.m., led by former Assistant Conductor Brett Mitchell. Be sure to join us throughout the Centennial year for all of our exciting performances. We’re just getting started!
New Century Society for Artistic Excellence and Innovation The New Century Society recognizes the Houston Symphony’s most committed and loyal supporters who have pledged their leadership support over a three-year period to help secure the orchestra’s financial future. We were also able to work together on the Centennial Concerts Committee this year, and I can tell that he sincerely loves the music and is really into what we’re doing.” It’s hard for commitment like this to go unnoticed, and donors have often found fans in the musicians. “It shows me that people in the community believe in what we’re doing. They give their money, but in addition to that, they give their time. This intense, high level of support makes me want to give more,” said Strauss. This connection to the musicians and Matthew Strauss the organization has attracted many patrons to establish a musician sponsor relationship. “My relationship with Matthew has been super and it has made me more excited about the Houston Symphony and appreciative of the great asset we have with them. I would highly recommend others to take advantage of this unique opportunity; it is quite special,” said David. David Pruner began attending Houston Symphony concerts out of a sheer love of music. From an early age, music filled his household since his mother, who played piano and studied music in college, would perform for her children, “I always remember as a young child her playing various songs classic and contemporary. She always made sure she had sheet music for the latest hits on the radio so we would always sit and hear her play,” said David. It wasn’t long before his attendance at Symphony concerts morphed into a spot on the Houston Symphony Board of Trustees and the Artistic Advisory Committee. It was there that he met percussionist Matthew Strauss, a fellow “Yankee,” with whom David and Alie Pruner he quickly became friends. “It has been great getting to know him. With the busy work life I keep, I like the chances we get to have lunch and just talk music of all kinds and the music industry. He is very knowledgeable and both energetic and passionate about what he does. I find this very contagious when we speak about music and the orchestra.” Soon David and his wife Alie became musician sponsors for Matthew. “I wanted to have that additional connection with the Symphony and better understand what is going on with the

This Month in Symphony History
The First Summer Season There aren’t many performing arts organizations that can say they offer performances year round—except for the Houston Symphony. For more than 30 years, the orchestra has been offering a summer concert series in Jones Hall. It all started in July 1981 with the Tchaikovsky Festival, a 10 day lineup of concerts and recitals, a symposium and other events culminating around the famous Russian composer, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Led by Music Director Sergiu Comissiona, the concerts featured some of Tchaikovsky’s most famous symphonic overtures and fantasies and his entire symphony lineup. Recitals and lunch hour performances featured many local Houston musicians as well as Symphony performers at various locations throughout the city. There were also several historical exhibits about the composer as well as a symposium entitled “Tchaikovsky: Defiled and Revered,” led by some of the nation’s leading musicologists and professional writers. This musical immersion experience set a significant precedent for what was to come in the Symphony’s future.
A Johannes Bach impersonator interacts with Brett Mitchell, former assistant conductor, at a concert during the 2009 Bach vs. Vivaldi Experience.
Though not held exclusively in the summer anymore, there have been several composer-focused festivals since then. Among others, there was a five day Bach and Handel Festival in 1985; the Mostly Mozart Festival occurred in 1987 and 1989; in 2008, there was the day long Beethoven Experience; the two day Bach vs. Vivaldi Experience was in 2009; and in 2012, audiences were treated to two separate month long experiences, RachFest! and the Best of Brahms concert series. Each one featured a variety of concert and chamber performances, discussion panels, historical exhibits and in some cases, even some composer impersonators. Today’s summer season spans both June and July with a variety of free and ticketed performances throughout the city. Jones Hall is the setting for our Summer In The City concerts in July that highlight innovative, multi-media performances that encourage new audiences to experience live music from a full orchestra while featuring familiar entertainment. This year’s series includes Video Games Live, The Music of the Rolling Stones, Pixar in Concert and Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. In honor of its Centennial, the Symphony will debut its newest festival experience, Day of Music, on Saturday, July 13, celebrating the musical diversity found in Houston. The day will feature two Houston Symphony concerts and more than 25 performances by local ensembles on stages throughout and around Jones Hall. The flute has always been one of Intravia’s greatest musical passions. Nine months after her famed “Flute Link” act at the Otakon 2008 Masquerade, Tommy Tallarico discovered the YouTube video of her skit and invited her to perform with Video Games Live. FRANKIE VALLI AND THE FOUR SEASONS | JULY 27
BiographY
The Houston Symphony gratefully acknowledges the following supporters of this concert weekend: Patron Beta Technology, Inc.
FRANKIE VALLI, vocalist Frankie Valli, who came to fame in 1962 as the lead singer of the Four Seasons, is hotter than ever. Thanks to the volcanic success of the Tony-winning musical Jersey Boys, which chronicles the life and times of Valli and his legendary group, such classic songs as “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Rag Doll” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” are the rage all over again. The excitement prompted Valli to salute the decade that made him a star with his first studio album in 15 years, Romancing The ’60s. Produced by Bob Gaudio, an original Four Seasons member and Valli’s longtime partner, the set includes unforgettable new versions of such gems as “Spanish Harlem,” “Call Me” and “Take Good Care of My Baby.” It’s the latest classic in Valli’s half-century of recording. Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons have enjoyed 71 chart hits, including 40 in the Top 40, 19 in the Top 10 and eight No. 1’s. Born Francis Castelluccio on May 3, 1934, he grew up in a public housing project on the tough streets of Newark, New Jersey. When he was 7, his mother took him to see Frank Sinatra. Valli recalls, “I decided then and there that’s what I was going to do—be a successful singer.” Fortunately, his friends discovered that making music was a good way to stay out of jail and car trunks. When the unknown Four Seasons sang “Sherry” on American Bandstand, they suddenly became the hottest band in the land, and after nine years as a recording artist, Frankie Valli became an “overnight” sensation with a No. 1 record. For the foreseeable future, Jersey Boys will introduce the music of Frankie Valli to new generations. And the man himself shows no signs of slowing down. July 2013 21

CHARLES HAUSMANN, director Dr. Charles S. Hausmann was named director of the Houston Symphony Chorus in 1986. He has prepared the group for more than 600 concerts, led them on numerous tours to Mexico and Europe, and worked with more than 40 acclaimed conductors, including Hans Graf, Christoph Eschenbach, Claus Peter Flor and Robert Shaw. His extensive repertoire includes most of the major choral/ orchestral masterworks. As director of graduate choral studies and professor of conducting at the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music since 1985, Hausmann supervises the master’s and doctoral programs in choral conducting, teaches choral conducting and literature and conducts the Moores School Choral Artists— a graduate chamber choir. An active church musician, he has conducted church choirs in Colorado, Kentucky, New Jersey and Texas. He currently serves as director of Choral Music at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church in Houston where he led the Houston Symphony and Chorus in a performance of Mendelssohn’s St. Paul (Spring 2008). He led the Chorus on its fourth European tour in 2007, appearing as guest conductor during the Prague Spring Festival. He and the Chorus share a collaboration with Mexico City’s Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería, and performed Mendelssohn’s Elijah with former Houston Symphony Associate Conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto.

EducaTIon and Community Engagement Programs
Music Partnered with Learning photo by jeff fitlow
Every year, tens of thousands of students flock to Jones Hall for Houston Symphony Education concerts. It’s not long before all eyes are glued to the stage and every face has a smile. The best part is that amidst the excitement and joy of the concert experience, the kids are actually learning. They’re developing active listening skills—skills that directly link to success in reading, due to the increased ability to sound out words internally. Leading the charge at these concerts is Houston Symphony Associate Conductor Robert Franz. His clever way of connecting musical performances to classroom concepts not only has kids excitedly rushing to their Symphony seats, but can also send their test scores to a whole new level. A recognized expert on music education and its effect on brain development, Franz participated in several projects with this intriguing connection. In Winston-Salem, NC, Franz created an arts education program with members of the Winston-Salem Piedmont Triad Symphony labeled the “Bolton Project” for its remarkable results at Bolton Elementary school. Franz, an oboist of a wind
quintet at the time, aimed to explore two questions. “What effect does listening to music have on students before they learn to play an instrument? And, does the act of listening to music change the way the brain develops?” Franz and his ensemble integrated music education performances into math, language arts, science and social studies classrooms. At the time, only 44 percent of the student body in this at-risk school had passed state standardized testing. According to Franz, “In weekly classes with the quintet, we provided specific listening cues for all first through third grade students before performances. Testing results were off the charts! After three years, 88 percent of the students had passed the state standardized tests. Scientists from Wake Forest University discovered that through these programs, we had developed high level active listening skills.” You don’t have to look far for research that proves the effects of music on brain development and why the Symphony’s work to engage students in music is so important. Franz and this research can be found in the book, The Well-Tempered Mind. You can also visit the “Resources” page under the Houston Symphony’s Education and Community Engagement tab of houstonsymphony.org.
The Houston Symphony would like to acknowledge those individuals, corporations and foundations that support our education and community engagement activities. Each year these activities impact the lives of more than 76,000 children and students and provide access to our world-class orchestra for more than 100,000 Houstonians free-of-charge.

BACKSTAGE PASS Bradley White, trombone Birthplace: New Orleans, LA Education: Bachelor of Music from Rice University; Master of Music from Manhattan School of Music Joined the Houston Symphony: 2000 I began playing trombone: At age 11, in the Texas band program. There are actually many professional brass players all over the world that came from the Texas band program. Earliest musical memory: My mother singing to me when I was around 2 or 3 years old. I can still hear those songs in my head as if it were yesterday. A musical family: My mother loved singing in her church choir and often sang her own songs. My aunt’s family has a bluegrass group that regularly sings at functions. Her family members consider their guitars to be some of their most prized possessions. I was also told at a family reunion about one of my relatives winning an Arkansas state fiddle championship. Although, that last one could be completely bogus.
If you weren’t a professional musician: I’ve always loved computers and technology. When I was around 11 years old, the Commodore 64 came out, and I had to have one. I loved programming all of these short little programs, and I ran my own bulletin board system. We called ourselves sysops (for system operators). We used ridiculously slow modems and called numbers directly, since this was before the days of the ubiquitous Internet. Before I won my job in the Houston Symphony, I worked in the software industry for three years. I was working on so many different aspects of the software life cycle that I became a real jack of all trades. I am also a part-time dare devil of sorts. When I was younger, I was known With his two daughters at the Museum for jumping long distances on my dirt of Natural Science Houston bike. I once jumped over 30 feet (we measured!). My parents often joked that the doctors in On vacation in Matacanes Canyon, the ER knew me by name. I continued this dare devil Monterrey, Mexico behavior until my 30s, when I did an idiotic backflip off a cliff narrowly missing the rocks below. After that, I decided to stop doing such dangerous stunts. I would probably routinely skydive if my wife, Maura, hadn’t finally put her foot down.
Career inspiration: There were a number of events that foreshadowed and guided my fate, but the defining moment occurred after I heard Mozart’s Requiem for the first time. In my opinion, this is the greatest work by Mozart— a composer who has been described as the greatest mind of the last thousand years. Little-known fact: Surprisingly, or perhaps not, there are many things about being a musician that are really challenging. Most physical injuries often leave us unable to do our jobs for days, weeks, years or sometimes not ever again. The hours are not terribly conducive to spending time with our families. We often confuse our self-worth with the level of our last performance. When we go on vacation, we must bring our instrument so that we can prepare for when we return to the orchestra. There are many times that I believe I would love to do something else, but then I admit, that I couldn’t be more wrong. Playing the music we do with the people in 36

this orchestra is a love and obsession that I will probably never willfully leave. I love seeing the enjoyment that my family and patrons get when they attend concerts, and I often realize that I am happiest when I am on stage.
Pivotal career moment: In February 2008, I had a case of Bells Palsy. A virus attacked the seventh facial nerve on the right side of my face, and I was completely paralyzed in that area for three months. Luckily, the nerve was not completely dead. Over the process of the next 13 months, the nerves healed, and I was able to retrain my face to play the trombone again. It was quite the learning experience because I had to start from scratch and work my way up to playing in the orchestra again. It has taken about five years to get to the point where playing feels natural again. When I was away, I really missed playing in the orchestra, and it was difficult to even listen to anything orchestra-related. Two positives from the experience are that during my leave, I was able to spend a lot of time with my twins girls who were 2 at the time, and I also developed a new-found appreciation for playing in the orchestra. When I’m not at Jones Hall: I’m letting my twin 6-year-old girls dress me up with hair bows while they laugh hysterically. Honestly, I don’t think it’s that funny.
