Welcome to the 2015 Summer Concert Series at Jones Hall! As the temperature in Houston rises, so does our desire to attract new audiences through our engaging Summer Concert Series. This year, we continue the tradition of incorporating visual elements into our performances and pairing them with the talents of our outstanding orchestra. Starting with the Music of Michael Jackson on July 24, the Summer Concert Series continues with Pokémon—Symphonic Evolutions on July 25 and 26. You’re sure to enjoy this musical retrospective through the popular video game’s most memorable melodies, accompanied by electrifying visuals on a giant screen. Also on the big screen, we celebrate the 30th anniversary of Back to the Future with a performance of Alan Silvestri’s dazzling score live, synchronized with the film. So pack up the DeLorean, and bring the family to Jones Hall on August 1! We also welcome very special guests to Houston and Jones Hall this month: the talented young musicians of the Colombian Youth Philharmonic (Filarmónica Joven de Colombia), who are embarking on the second part of a multi-week partnership with the Houston Symphony. Last month, in the initial stage of the partnership, 14 Houston Symphony musicians traveled to Colombia to act as sectional coaches and musical mentors for the young musicians. This month, the partnership culminates with the Colombian Youth Philharmonic musicians performing side-by-side with Houston Symphony musicians, joined by three vocal soloists, the Houston Symphony Chorus and the Houston Children’s Chorus, on an extended stage at Jones Hall. Led by Andrés Orozco-Estrada, the performances of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana on July 17 and 18 are not to be missed. Truly collaborative connections such as this educational partnership are dear to our hearts, as they reflect the Houston Symphony’s mission to inspire, educate and engage diverse audiences and communities. To learn more about the Colombian Youth Philharmonic and their visit to Houston, please visit houstonsymphony.org/ ColombianYouthPhil. Looking ahead to the start of the 2015-16 concert season, please save the date of September 12 for a dazzling Opening Night Concert and Gala with world-famous violinist Joshua Bell, conducted by Andrés. For details of this year’s elegant and festive evening, held in honor of Margaret Alkek Williams 80th birthday, please turn to page 8. We hope you will join us to celebrate the start of another electrifying concert season!

ANDRÉS OROZCO-ESTRADA, MUSIC DIRECTOR

Houston Symphony Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada began his tenure in the 2014-15 season. He immediately established a dynamic presence on the podium and a deep bond with the musicians of the orchestra. Andrés carefully curates his programs to feature engaging combinations of classical masterworks paired with the music of today, significant artistic collaborations with composers and guest artists, and innovative use of multimedia and visual effects, all in order to make meaningful connections with the audience. A natural communicator, Andrés will expand on this foundation in the 2015-16 season and plans to engage even more in direct conversation about music with the audience. Among his new initiatives will be “On Stage Insights with Andrés,” which will feature casual commentary by Andrés and soloists from the stage. On the recording front, Andrés and the Symphony are recording the last four great symphonies of Antonín Dvorˇák, the first of which will be released in fall 2015. Andrés has also spearheaded a cultural exchange and partnership with the Filarmónica Joven de Colombia. Expanding the orchestra’s international reach, Andrés will lead the Symphony on its first Latin American tour in May/June 2016. Born in Medellín, Colombia, Andrés began his musical stud-

ies on the violin and started conducting at age 15. At 19, he entered the Vienna Music Academy, where he studied with Uroš Lajovic (pupil of the legendary Hans Swarowsky), and completed his degree with distinction conducting the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Musikverein. Andrés burst on the international scene with two substitutions with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra: the first, his debut in 2010, standing in for Esa-Pekka Salonen, and then in 2012, substituting for Riccardo Muti at the Musikverein. He has worked with the most prominent European orchestras, most recently the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Orchestre National de France and Oslo Philharmonic. In addition to his post in Houston, Andrés is chief conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. In the 2015-16 season, he will make his official subscription series debut with the Vienna Philharmonic, as well as the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tonhalle-Orchestra Zurich, the Cleveland Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and he will become principal guest conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

THE NEW MUSIC DIRECTOR FUND The New Music Director Fund supports the concert activities of Andrés Orozco-Estrada in his year as Music Director Designate (201314 Centennial Season) and his first years as Music Director of the Houston Symphony (2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons). Andrés, appointed in January 2013, is a young, dynamic conductor who radiates charm and energy both on and off the podium. He is the orchestra’s first Hispanic music director. photo by julie soefer

Education and Community engagement

Access and relevance for all: looking back and ahead

Did you know that our education and community programs account for more than a quarter of the orchestra’s annual activity? For over 100 years, the Houston Symphony has been the cornerstone of the performing arts in Houston. As part of this commitment to the arts, the Symphony invests over $4.5 million each year, more than 16 percent of its annual budget, in educational programs, community activities and free concerts. We recognize that there are physical and geographic challenges when it comes to attending our concerts, so we have made it a priority to offer a fair amount of concerts outside our main concert hall in downtown. The Houston Symphony experience is no longer limited to Jones Hall, The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, or Miller Outdoor Theatre. Each year, we touch the lives of over 97,000 children and 150,000 people who attend our concerts and musician clinics—free of charge—at over 100 venues. We’re coming to your neighborhoods, schools, churches, parks, community centers, and most importantly, your children’s classrooms. The Houston Symphony actively partners with schools and teachers in our community to produce better learners through interdisciplinary concerts and activities that foster active listening skills and address multiple learning styles. In the words of Associate Conductor Robert Franz, “The Houston Symphony is involved with education because music makes a unique and vital contribution to children’s cognitive development.” Research shows that the study of music can have a profound and positive effect on speech, memory, attention and problem solving. Exposure to music helps to develop high-level active listening skills that are correlated with increased reading ability and greater success in school. We are proud to collaborate with eight independent school districts in greater Houston, each committed to bringing at least an entire grade level to the Symphony each year: Alief, Clear Creek, Conroe, Galena Park, La Porte, Pasadena, Spring Branch and participating vertical teams in HISD. 10

www.houstonsymphony.org

But despite our success to date, there is still a long road ahead and much more to do in order to help even more people to learn about and engage with music, making it a relevant and integral part of their lives. Earlier this year, we announced a groundbreaking program to recruit four new string players as part of an initiative to embed musicians more deeply in the community and to better represent and serve the diverse population of Greater Houston. The four new musicians will devote the majority of their time to off-stage education and community programs through individual and small ensemble work in schools, neighborhoods and healthcare settings. Their work will enable the Symphony to increase the quality and quantity of music education in Greater Houston, helping students to develop essential life skills, including problem-solving, critical thinking, teamwork and perseverance. The orchestra intends to add more of these Community-Embedded Musicians over the next two seasons, so stay tuned and be on the lookout for all the great work that’s ahead. And as we continue to identify and execute more innovative ways to reach more people in Houston and beyond, it is worth to acknowledge an important partnership taking place this summer with members of the Colombian Youth Philharmonic (Filarmónica Joven de Colombia). Nearly 100 young musicians will travel from Colombia to Houston this summer to rehearse and perform with our orchestra in a side-by-side performance of Carl’s Carmina Burana. Additionally, during their time in Houston, they will also perform at our 3rd Annual Day of Music, visit Spanish-speaking seniors and interact with students of the Fort Bend Independent School District. The Colombian Youth Philharmonic has become an icon in Colombia, performing more than 100 concerts in sixteen cities and throughout the country, and we’re thrilled to welcome them into our city and share the stage with such a promising and talented group of musicians.

EducaTIon and Community Engagement The Houston Symphony acknowledges those individuals, corporations and foundations that support our education and community engagement activities. Each year, these activities impact the lives of more than 97,000 children and students and provide access to our world-class orchestra for more than 150,000 Houstonians free of charge. Houston Chronicle Concert | july 11 SLAVONIC DANCES Antonín Dvorˇák (1841-1904) In a Tweet. Dvorˇ ák’s irrepressible Slavonic Dances, among the first of his works to gain him fame, sparkle through a succession of Slavic folk dances.

The Back Story. Antonín Dvorˇ ák was 33 years old in 1874 when he received his first real break as a composer: he was awarded the Austrian State Stipendium, a grant to assist young, poor, gifted musicians—an exact description of Dvorˇ ák at the time. That he received the award five years in a row underscores how little his financial situation changed in the mid-1870s. The Viennese music critic Eduard Hanslick was on the jury that first year, and Johannes Brahms joined him as a judge beginning in 1875. In 1877, Hanslick encouraged Dvorˇ ák to send some scores to Brahms. Dvorˇ ák did, and Brahms was so delighted with what

notes | Houston Chronicle Concert | july 11 he received that he recommended the emerging composer to his own publisher, Fritz Simrock, who immediately published Dvorˇák’s Moravian Duets, commissioned a collection of Slavonic Dances and contracted a first option on all of the composer’s new works. Simrock hoped the Slavonic Dances would resemble Brahms’ Hungarian Dances, and that is the spirit in which the public received them. A review in the Berlin Nazionalzeitung proclaimed: “Here is at last a hundred-percent talent and, what is more, a completely natural talent. I consider the Slavonic Dances to be a work which will make its triumphant way through the world in the same way as Brahms’ Hungarian Dances.” The review put Dvorˇ ák on the musical map among German music lovers. That initial set of eight dances— Dvorˇ ák’s Opus 46, scored for piano four-hands—paid off; it brought the 37-year-old Dvorˇ ák his first author’s fee, however modest, and it earned a small fortune for the publisher. Within months, Dvorˇ ák produced orchestral versions of them, and in 1886, he followed up with eight further Slavonic Dances for piano four-hands (Opus 72), which he similarly enlarged into orchestrated settings. The Instruments. 2 flutes and piccolo, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, timpani, percussion and strings What To Listen For. Many traditional dance forms from the Czech Lands and other Slavic regions are represented in Dvorˇ ák’s two collections of Slavonic Dances. Interested as he was in folk music, Dvorˇ ák was no ethnomusicologist. He played fast and loose with strictly defined dance forms, sometimes blending characteristics of disparate dances into a single composition. Some of the best known dance styles he touches on are the Furiant, a Bohemian dance in quick triple time; the Mazurka, a triple-meter Polish dance accented on the third beat of each measure; and the Dumka, a favorite dance of Dvorˇ ák’s, originally a Ukrainian lament, but by his time transformed into a ruminative piece with happy interludes. ©2015 James M. PIANO CONCERTO NO. 1 IN B-FLAT MINOR, OPUS 23 Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-93) In a Tweet. Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 scored a breakthrough success for its 34-year-old composer thanks to its effusion of memorable melodies. The Back Story. In 1874, when he composed his First Piano Concerto, the 34-year-old Tchaikovsky was scraping by as a music theory teacher at the recently established Moscow Conservatory. Being a middling pianist himself, he asked his pianist-colleague Nikolai Rubinstein, the school’s founder, to give it a test run and share his thoughts on technical matters. After the read-through, Rubinstein sat silently for a while before expressing his opinion. “At first,” Tchaikovsky wrote, “he spoke quietly, but by degrees his passion rose, and finally he resembled Zeus hurling thunderbolts. It appeared that my concerto was worthless and absolutely unplayable, that the passages were manufactured and furthermore so clumsy as to be beyond correction, that the composition itself was bad, trivial, and commonplace, that I had stolen this point from somebody and that point from somebody else, that only two or three pages had any value whatsoever, and all the rest should 16

In March of this year, the Hearst Foundations made a generous threeyear commitment of $150,000 to support an expansion of the Houston Symphony’s David Dewhurst Student Concert Series in the 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons. This past season, the grant helped the Symphony welcome 55,000 students from 21 Houston-area school districts to experience our orchestra’s amazing music, augmented by specially designed lesson plans which connect the concert experience to language arts, social studies, science and math. The Foundations have supported the Houston Symphony for more than 25 years, and they have established The William Randolph Hearst Fund for Education Programs as part of the Houston Symphony Endowment in 1988. Since its inception, this fund has distributed earnings in excess of $500,000 in support of the Symphony’s education and community engagement activities. Since their inception, the Foundations have made over 19,800 grants totaling more than $1 billion.

The concerto is more notable as an effusion of themes than as a tightly organized structure. Its opening statement is renowned: a four-measure prologue in the horns leads immediately out of the tonic key of B-flat minor and into D-flat major for the sweeping opening melody, introduced grandly by violins and cellos, with a grand overlay of monumental chords from the piano. It dominates the first 10 pages of the score—about three and a half minutes of this 35-minute concerto—and then it simply evaporates, not to be heard again. The piano tune that takes over where the introduction leaves off has a skipping quality, lacking the gravitas one might expect of the principal theme of a concerto’s opening movement. Tchaikovsky reported that he owed this nervous, stumbling allegro melody to a blind beggar he heard singing at a fair. “It is curious,” he explained in a letter, “that in Little Russia [now Ukraine] every blind beggar sings exactly the same tune with the same refrain.” © 2015 James M. SYMPHONY NO. 9 IN E MINOR, OPUS 95, FROM THE NEW WORLD Antonín Dvorˇ ák (1841-1904) In a Tweet. Dvorˇ ák’s Symphony From the New World, a musical postcard from an ex-pat in New York City, reflects his fascination with American folk music. The Back Story. Antonín Dvorˇ ák was ensconced in Prague, the most prominent of Czech composers, when he was invited to become director of the National Conservatory of Music, newly established in New York City. Intrigued by the challenge, he spent three years there, 1892-95, building the school’s curriculum and

notes | Houston Chronicle Concert | july 11 faculty, appearing as a guest conductor and composing several of his most enduring masterworks. His Symphony From the New World, which the New York Philharmonic introduced in December 1893, was arguably the most spectacular success of his career. The critic for the New York Evening Post proclaimed it “the greatest symphonic work ever composed in this country,” which at that point was undoubtedly true. The title came to Dvorˇák as an afterthought, and he added it just before delivering the score to the orchestra, later explaining that it signified nothing more than “impressions and greetings from the New World.” But for that subtitle, a listener encountering the piece for the first time might not consider it less imbued with the “Czech spirit” than any of the composer’s other symphonies. Syncopated rhythms and modal melodies are emblematic of many folk and popular musical traditions, those of Bohemia and the United States included. But Dvorˇák really was interested in African-American and Native American music, and musicologists have found in the symphony’s melodies echoes of such undeniably American tunes as “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” and “Massa Dear” (the famous English horn melody of the Largo). Dvorˇ ák’s pronouncements on the American character of this work are ambiguous. To one reporter, he pointed out certain parallels to Longfellow’s poem “The Song of Hiawatha.” To another, he insisted, “I have simply written original themes embodying the peculiarities of Indian music, and using these themes as subjects, have developed them with all the resources of modern rhythms, harmony, counterpoint, and orchestral color.” The Instruments. 2 flutes (1 doubling piccolo) 2 oboes (1 doubling English horn) 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, timpani, percussion and strings What To Listen For. The tender, nostalgic theme of the Largo movement, announced by the English horn, became famous as a standalone number (with words attached) under the title “Goin’ Home.” This version was arranged and published in 1926 in the collection Seventy Negro Spirituals by Dvorˇ ák’s one-time pupil William Arms Fisher. The melody does bear a slight resemblance to a popular song known as “Massa Dear,” but it was effectively an originally composed melody that was later embraced as a song, rather than the other way around. ©2015 James M. The Back Story: The Rite of Spring, Stravinsky’s groundbreaking “pictures of pagan Russia,” sent tremors through the cultural world when Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes introduced it in 1913. Hoping to repeat its success with another ballet built on folk-inspired primitivism, Diaghilev invited Prokofiev, a recent St. Petersburg Conservatory graduate, to compose music for a ballet involving Scythian tribes that roamed Central Asia for several hundred years beginning about the eighth century B.C.E. The scenario arrived—titled Ala and Lolly, after its two central Scythians—and Prokofiev’s music shortly on its heels. It involved the Sun-God’s daughter Ala, a wooden idol who was abducted by the Night-God. Lolly, a mortal, set off to free her and was nearly vanquished; but the sun rose, its light killing the Night-God. Diaghilev didn’t like the scenario or the music and canceled the project. Prokofiev was disappointed, but Diaghilev later commissioned and produced three other ballets from him. Prokofiev had heard The Rite of Spring in a concert performance before he worked on Ala and Lolly. Though he claimed he didn’t understand Stravinsky’s score, it was “entirely possible that I was searching for the same images in my own way.” His score bowls over the listener with sheer brawn. Although his music would not make it onto the stage as a ballet, he could be sure it would be heard as a concert piece. That’s how it was unveiled as Scythian Suite in 1916, and the choicest expanses of the score gained status as a concert classic. The Instruments: 3 flutes (3rd doubling alto flute) and piccolo, 3 oboes and English horn, 3 clarinets (3rd doubling E-flat clarinet) and bass clarinet, 3 bassoons and contrabassoon, 8 horns, 5 trumpets, 4 trombones, tuba, timpani, 2 harps, piano, celesta and strings What to Listen For: Prokofiev’s Scythian Suite is famous for the massive sound produced by its huge orchestra, but it also contains pages of more subtle delicacy. A magical passage comes midway through the last movement, where the sun begins to rise, banishing the forces of darkness. The celesta (a percussion instrument whose keyboard activates a mechanism that strikes metal plates) is joined by two harps to suggest the initial morning glow, with woodwinds and eventually brasses adding brilliance as the sun ascends. ©2015 James M. Carmina burana Carl Orff (1895-1982) In a Tweet: Orff’s Carmina burana, a failsafe audience favorite, portrays decadent scenes of medieval life in music everyone will be sure to recognize. The Back Story: Orff initially delved into Schoenberg-style complexity, but after World War I his interest veered toward Renaissance music and compositions intended for elementary music instruction. Suddenly, everything changed. Wrote Orff: “Fortune smiled on me when she put into my hands a Wurzburg secondhand-books catalogue, in which I found a title that exercised on me an attraction of magical force: Carmina burana / Latin and German songs and poems of a thirteenth-century manuscript from Benediktbeuern, edited by J.A. Schmeller.” It was a modern printing of an illustrated manuscript, formerly housed in a Benedictine abbey in the Bavarian Alps. It contained some 300 anonymous poems, mostly in Latin or Middle High German, including many on the subjects of love, drinking, gambling and the foibles of the clergy. “On opening it,” he recalled, “I immediately found, on the front page, the long-famous picture of ‘Fortune with her Wheel,’ and under it the lines: ‘O Fortuna / velut luna / statu variabilis.’ … A stage work with singing and dancing choruses, simply following the illustrations and the texts, at once came into my mind.” He arranged 24 of the poems into three main groups, titled “Primo vere / Uf dem Anger” (In Springtime / On the Green), “In Taberna” (In the Tavern), and “Cour d’amours” CONTINUED ON PAGE 22 July 2015 19

notes continued from page 19 | carmina burana | july 17, 18 (Court of Love), with the last enlarged by the single-movement setting called “Blanziflor et Helena.” The pulsating movement “Fortuna imperatrix mundi” (Fortune, Empress of the World)— immensely famous today—serves as prologue and again as epilogue. Orff headed his piece with the grand title Carmina burana, Cantiones profanae cantoribus et choris cantandae comitantibus instrumentis atque imaginibus magicis (Songs of Bavaria: Secular songs for singers and choruses to be sung together with instruments and magic images). The Instruments: 3 flutes (2 doubling piccolo), 3 oboes (1 doubling English horn), 3 clarinets (1 doubling E-flat clarinet, 1 doubling bass clarinet), 2 bassoons and contrabassoon, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, 2 timpani, percussion, celesta, 2 pianos and strings What to Listen For: The tenor soloist gets an unusual assignment in “Olim lacus colueram,” portraying a swan being roasted on a spit and then served on a platter. Orff sets this swan song in stratospheric range, reaching an ultra-high D. Nearly all tenors achieve at least some of its notes through falsetto singing. ©2015 James M. Keller

ALAN SILVESTRI, composer In his ongoing, decades-long career as a composer, Alan Silvestri has scored some of the most iconically revered and profitable films in Hollywood history, amassing more than 100 credits to the tune of two Oscar and Golden Globe nominations, two Emmy awards, as well as three Grammy awards. While stylistically diverse, the unifying voice of Silvestri’s work is an unmistakable rhythmic melody whose themes continue to embody movie excitement and drama for generations of moviegoers. Born in New York City and raised in Teaneck, New Jersey, Silvestri first thought of becoming a bebop jazz guitar player. After spending two years at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Silvestri hit the road as a performer and arranger. Landing in Hollywood at age 22, and armed with film scoring books and a sense of adventure, Silvestri found himself successfully composing the music for 1972’s The Doberman Gang. A sequel, The Amazing Dobermans, was followed by several low budget, but successful, films further cementing Silvestri’s place in the world of film composing. The 1970s witnessed the rise of energetic synth-pop scores, establishing Silvestri as the action rhythmatist for TV’s highway patrol hit CHiPs. This action-driven score caught the ear of budding filmmaker Robert Zemeckis, whose hit film 1984’s Romancing the Stone was the perfect first date for the composer and director, and its success became the basis of a decades-long collaboration between the filmmaker and composer that continues today. Their numerous collaborations have taken them through many fascinating landscapes and stylistic variations, from the Back to the Future trilogy, the jazzy world of Toontown in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? to the tension filled rooms of What Lies Beneath and Death Becomes Her, from the cosmic wonder of Contact to the emotional isolation of Cast Away, and from the Wagnerian brawl of Beowulf to the magic of The Christmas Carol and Polar Express, whose song “Believe” garnered an Oscar nomination. But perhaps no film partnership defines their creative relationship better than Zemeckis’ 1994 Best Picture winner, Forrest Gump, for which Silvestri’s gift for melodically beautiful themes earned him an Oscar nomi-

notes | BACK TO THE FUTURE | august 1 nation and the affection of film music lovers everywhere. Though the Zemeckis/Silvestri collaboration is legendary, Silvestri has scored well over 100 films of every imaginable style and genre. His energy and experimentation has brought excitement and emotion to the hard-hitting orchestral/percussion scores of Predator, Judge Dredd and James Cameron’s The Abyss and lent thrills to the effects-driven scores for The Mummy Returns and G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra. His ethnic rhythms for Soapdish and The Mexican segue to the raucous fun of family entertainments like Stuart Little 1 and 2 and Disney’s Lilo and Stitch as well as the Night at the Museum trilogy. The gripping tension of Blown Away yields to the romantic film noir of The Bodyguard while edgy comedies like Mousehunt and romantic comedies like The Father of the Bride 1 and 2, Parent Trap and What Women Want bring heartfelt warmth. But Silvestri has also proven adept at riding the western range of Young Guns 2 and The Quick and the Dead while also providing thrilling macho muscle for Van Helsing and The A-Team. Silvestri’s talent for a dynamically heroic sound has helped propel such Marvel superheroes as Captain America: The First Avenger and The Avengers to spectacular world-wide success, even as he provided the restrained, anguished sound for the alcoholic pilot of Robert Zemeckis’ Flight. Silvestri’s rambunctious orchestral cheer has also helped to create the hit caveman family film The Croods. In 2014, Silvestri won two Emmy awards for his work on Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey. The new Cosmos updates Carl Sagan’s original series with the latest discoveries about the universe we live in and combines those facts with spectacular visual effects and animation. Ann Druyan, Sagan’s widow and a co-writer on the original series, serves as an executive producer, writer and director alongside executive producer Seth MacFarlane. Most recently, Silvestri has composed the music for Zemeckis’ The Walk. The film is the story of French high-wire artist Philippe Petit’s attempt to cross the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in 1974. The film will be in theaters October 2015. Alan Silvestri and his wife, Sandra, are longtime residents of California’s central coast. They are founders of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Monterey branch and have served in many capacities through their long relationship with the organization since their son was diagnosed as a child in 1992. They also founded Silvestri Vineyards. Their wines show that lovingly cultivated fruit has a music all its own. “There’s something about the elemental side of winemaking that appeals to me,” he says. “Both music-making and wine-making involve the blending of art and science. Just as each note brings its own voice to the melody, each vine brings its own unique personality to the wine.” Whether in his studio or the vineyard, Alan Silvestri continues to find inspiration and passion for music, film, family and wine.

In 2008, Moore produced Play! A Video Game Symphony, a touring concert series that featured orchestral performances from video game titles, including HALO, World of Warcraft, Dragon Age, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, The Elder Scrolls, Guild Wars, Chrono Trigger and more. Following the success of Play!, Moore served as producer and lead creative on The Legend of Zelda 25th Anniversary Symphony in 2011, as well as album producer for the Special Audio CD that shipped with more than 3.42 million copies of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. In 2012, he and his team followed up the success of that event with The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses world tour, which continued for more than 95 performances worldwide before concluding in San Jose with the Skywalker Symphony Orchestra in December 2013. In June 2014, Moore’s latest project, Pokémon: Symphonic Evolutions, was announced in partnership with The Pokémon Company and premiered to a sold-out audience during the 2014 Pokémon World Championships in Washington, D.C. Jeron Moore currently works with his team at Princeton Entertainment as associate executive producer. 40

BACKSTAGE PASS

Ian Mayton, horn Ian Mayton was appointed fourth horn of the Houston Symphony by Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada in November 2014. Ian has performed with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and the North Carolina Symphony. After completing his Bachelor of Music degree at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, he spent a year in the Masters of Music program at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music studying with William VerMeulen. Beginnings: I began playing the French horn in sixth-grade band, but I began seriously pursuing the instrument when I was a senior in high school. Other musicians in the family: There was a lot of music in the house as I was growing up. Mom and Dad were both involved in the church band; Mom sang, and Dad played the drumset. My younger brother and I were both involved in the high school wind ensemble, marching band and jazz combo. Houston Symphony audition: The most memorable part of my audition was the final round. In addition to a selection of excerpts, the finalists played excerpts with the current members of the Houston Symphony horn section. It was very rewarding to make music with them. Looking forward to this season: I am especially looking forward to the performances of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony this upcoming March. In addition to being an incredibly colorful and emotional work, the third movement features a beautiful fourth horn solo that I have always wanted to play with an orchestra. Best thing about being a musician: Making music allows me to become a part of an artistic product greater than any one individual can create. Each week, we have an interesting new composition or masterwork to perform, and we never stop learning as professional musicians. Life in Houston: I have been a Houstonian for just under a year! I began my Masters of Music degree at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music in August 2014. My favorite part of the Houston scene is the incredible Vietnamese food. Outside Jones Hall: When I am not at Jones Hall, I enjoy hiking, tasting local beers and relaxing at home with my girlfriend Rebekah and her dog, Honey. Soon I will have my own dog, and Honey will have Peanut as a playmate!
