Lying approximately 2,000 light-years from us in the constellation of Lyra, the Harp, is the spectacular Ring: Nebula, another planetary nebula. Here, during the last 4,000 years, a star several times more massive than our Sun expanded rapidly to form a red giant star before collapsing into a tiny white dwarf. As the star died, it shed billions of tons of gas, forming this colorful radiant ring more than a light-year across. The Ring Nebula is expanding at around 43,000 miles an hour and will continue to do so for at least another 10,000 years.

Welcome to the Houston Symphony! We are excited to conclude our regular 2015-16 concert season with a big bang: The Houston Symphony presents The Cosmos—An HD Odyssey, the final installment of our film trilogy that began with The Planets and The Earth. Set to the score of Dvorˇák’s Symphony No. 9, From the New World, The Cosmos presents breathtaking images of far distant galaxies, nebulae and other astronomical wonders captured by cutting-edge instruments both on and off the Earth, including the Hubble Space Telescope. Filmmaker Duncan Copp offers a preview of the The Cosmos in our interview with him on page 14. Please join Andrés and the orchestra on May 26–29 for an outof-this-world premiere. Even though our concert season is nearing its end, we continue our innovative efforts to bring music closer to the hearts and minds of listeners throughout Houston and beyond. This past March, The Houston Symphony announced the launch into cyberspace of our new podcast series, On the Music. This engaging free series, hosted by Musical Ambassador/Assistant Conductor Carlos Andrés Botero and Houston Public Media Arts and Culture Director St.John Flynn, is available on iTunes, SoundCloud, Stitcher and houstonsymphony.org/OntheMusic. Each 30-minute episode, featuring exclusive excerpts from Houston Symphony archival recordings and the Naxos music library, encourages a deeper appreciation of the music through musical context and commentary on the score. And congratulations are in order for the 10 young semi-finalists competing in the 2016 Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Competition, chaired by Jo Dee Wright of the Houston Symphony League. In this unique competition, aspiring instrumentalists compete to be featured as a soloist with the Houston Symphony and to win a significant cash prize made possible by generous donors. Please see page 16 and join us for the exciting Finals Concert in the Stude Concert Hall at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music on Saturday, June 4. As a final note to our 2015–16 concert season, we again express our deepest appreciation for the ongoing support and loyalty of our patrons, subscribers, donors and sponsors. Without you, our ambitious mission to inspire, stimulate and enlighten listeners across our community and beyond would be unachievable. We invite you continue with us on this journey by making a gift to the Annual Fund campaign by May 31. Your gift will help the Houston Symphony enrich the lives of more than 400,000 Houstonians each year. For specifics, please turn to page 19, and we’ll look forward to seeing all of our donors at the exclusive Donor Appreciation Concert in September.

ANDRÉS OROZCO-ESTRADA, MUSIC DIRECTOR

Houston Symphony Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada began his tenure in the 2014-15 season. He immediately established a dynamic presence on the podium and a deep bond with the musicians of the orchestra. Andrés carefully curates his programs to feature engaging combinations of classical masterworks paired with the music of today, significant artistic collaborations with composers and guest artists, and innovative use of multimedia and visual effects, all in order to make meaningful connections with the audience. A natural communicator, Andrés expands on this foundation in the 2015-16 season and engages even more with the audience in direct conversation about music. Among his new initiatives is “On-Stage Insights with Andrés,” which features casual commentary by Andrés and soloists from the stage. On the recording front, Andrés and the Symphony are recording the last four great symphonies of Antonín Dvorˇák. Andrés has also spearheaded a cultural exchange and partnership with the Filarmónica Joven de Colombia. Born in Medellín, Colombia, Andrés began his musical studies on the violin and started conducting at age 15. At 19, he entered

the Vienna Music Academy, where he studied with Uroš Lajovic (pupil of the legendary Hans Swarowsky), and completed his degree with distinction conducting the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Musikverein. Andrés burst on the international scene with two substitutions with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra: the first, his debut in 2010, standing in for EsaPekka Salonen, and then in 2012, substituting for Riccardo Muti at the Musikverein. He has worked with the most prominent European orchestras, most recently the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Orchestre National de France and Oslo Philharmonic. In addition to his post in Houston, Andrés is chief conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and principal guest conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. In the 2015-16 season, he makes his official subscription series debut with the Vienna Philharmonic, as well as the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tonhalle-Orchestra Zurich, the Cleveland Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

THE NEW MUSIC DIRECTOR FUND The New Music Director Fund supports the concert activities of Andrés Orozco-Estrada in his year as Music Director Designate (201314 Centennial Season) and his first years as Music Director of the Houston Symphony (2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons). Andrés, appointed in January 2013, is a young, dynamic conductor who radiates charm and energy both on and off the podium. He is the orchestra’s first Hispanic music director.

Celebrating Success with Spec’s

Lisa, John & Lindy Rydman

12

www.houstonsymphony.org

As the 2015-16 Houston Symphony season comes to a close with the out-of-this-world multimedia experience of The Cosmos—An HD Odyssey, not to mention Symphonie fantastique and the chart-topping Music of Journey, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac & More, it’s only fitting that we celebrate the Houston Symphony’s single largest corporate donor, Spec’s Wines, Spirits & Finer Foods and Spec’s Charitable Foundation. That’s because this partnership is truly stellar, benefitting the entire Symphony family. Through its generous support, Spec’s, led by owners John and Lindy Rydman, impacts more than 400,000 Houstonians, whether they be audiences at Symphony concerts at Jones Hall and across our city, or students participating in our Community-Embedded Musicians program. A large retail chain with 168 stores throughout Texas and more than 3,400 employees, Spec’s is nevertheless a family business. The Rydmans’ daughter, Lisa, also works with Spec’s through her company, Phoenix Advertising Group. Spec’s was founded in 1962 by Lindy’s parents, Carroll and Carolynn Jackson; the Rydmans established the Spec’s Charitable Foundation in their honor. The Rydmans believe their business and industry must be driven by community responsibility and personal interactions with customers. Spec’s is known for its personal touch in every aspect of its business: cultivating interesting and unique suppliers, building a sense of family among its employees, providing guidance and personal service to customers and giving back to the communities it serves. John and Lindy met when they were both music majors at the University of North Texas in Denton. Today, music is still an important part of their lives, and they are especially dedicated to music education. As John says, “We want to educate as many people as possible about the beauty and power of live music.” Because of this special passion, Spec’s is the lifetime underwriter of the One O’Clock Lab Band, UNT’s renowned jazz ensemble. The Rydmans’ commitment to music education also makes possible the annual Houston Symphony Spec’s Charitable Foundation Salute to Educators Concert, which provides free attendance to teachers and their guests. Since 1996, Spec’s has contributed more than $3 million to the Houston Symphony— not including in-kind support, and John serves on the Symphony’s Board of Trustees as a Governing Director. John’s involvement began when some of his customers asked him to help select wines for Houston Symphony events. Since then, he has brought his characteristic hands-on style to ensuring that events like the annual Wine Dinner and Collector’s Auction are outstanding experiences. All funds raised through the Wine Dinner support the orchestra’s education and community engagement efforts. In 1997, the Rydmans inaugurated an annual wine industry fundraiser, Vintage Virtuoso, to support the Symphony’s education and community programs, and it has become a highlight of the December social calendar. Over the last 20 years, Vintage Virtuoso has raised almost $2.5 million for the Symphony. Spec’s is now nationally recognized for its corporate citizenship and exemplary involvement in the arts, one of only 10 companies to receive a 2015 BCA 10 Award, administered by Americans for the Arts. Additionally, at the 2016 Houston Symphony Ball on May 14, John & Lindy Rydman and Spec’s will be presented with the Mike Stude Award for Enduring Artistic Vision. This award, named for the Houston Symphony’s Chairman Emeritus, honors contributors who ensure the Symphony’s current and future success. All through the month of May, please join the Houston Symphony family in thanking and celebrating the Rydmans and Spec’s for helping provide concerts like the one you are about to experience.

Filmmaker Duncan Copp on The Cosmos—An HD Odyssey The Houston Symphony caps off its season May 26-29 with The Cosmos, the final journey in its HD Odyssey series. Producer Duncan Copp tells Houston Symphony Magazine how he dovetailed high-definition video of the heavens with Antonín Dvorˇák’s Symphony No. 9, From the New World. Houston Symphony Magazine: So far in the HD Odyssey trilogy, The Planets has taken us around our solar system, and The Earth has given us new views of our own home. What will we see in The Cosmos?

PHOTOS BY ALEX CHERNEY

Duncan Copp: I think astronomy is experiencing a golden age. We’re seeing the cosmos in a detail never witnessed before. I’ve mined some extraordinary images from the Hubble Space Telescope, revealing star birth and star death in our galaxy, and of course jaw-dropping images of galaxies beyond our own. The video for the symphony’s first movement centers on wonderful time-lapse movies created mainly by astrophotographer Alex Cherney. Alex’s exquisite work captures the stars, planets and our moon as they cartwheel across the heavens. In the third movement, I draw on a satellite called the Solar Dynamics Observatory. It observes the sun in wavelengths invisible to our eyes. This way, the sun reveals itself in its true colors, so to speak—a seething ball of superheated plasma. HSM: Do you have any favorite images? DC: That’s like asking if I have a favorite Beatles track or movie! I like some for their dynamism, like the giant eruptions on the surface of the sun. The time-lapse astrophotography always draws me in. It’s like a great painting—every time you look, you see something different. And there are one or two Hubble images where, apart from the main galaxy that’s featured, it’s possible to see countless other galaxies in the far distance. You start to feel the incredible enormity of what you’re seeing—galaxies everywhere, each containing hundreds of millions of stars. HSM: When you combined video with Gustav Holst’s The Planets, the titles of the movements tipped you off about linking images to music. How did you go about it with Dvorˇák? DC: While Dvorˇák’s New World doesn’t have the same obvious connection regarding cosmic images, it’s a wonderful and evocative symphony that lends itself to a visual companion. I don’t feel there needs to be a very strong narrative pictorially. The symphony has great tonal and tempo variation within and between movements. That always helps distinguish and delineate my visual vignettes. HSM: Does The Cosmos have spots in which you’re especially proud of how you’ve matched music and video? 14

www.houstonsymphony.org

DC: I particularly like the second movement. The tempo, which mostly is slower, is more emotive to me. It lends itself to really absorbing the beauty of the imagery. With the Hubble imagery I used here, I really slowed down the tracking movements. I think that heightens a synergy between what we’re seeing and what we’re hearing. HSM: Video technology must have advanced since you created The Planets in 2009. Can you do anything in The Cosmos that you couldn’t back then? DC: We have worked very hard to create a production that enables conductors to interpret the symphony in whatever manner they want. This of course can be tricky. How can we keep the music and pictures in sync during every performance, and with different conductors’ interpretations? With refinement, and with the advent of better software and hardware, we think we’ve found a solution. It allows us to edit the production in real time during a performance, without compromising my original edit. Conductors have the freedom to express themselves without being slaves to the video.

BIOGRAPHIES GABRIELA MONTERO, piano Gabriela Montero’s visionary interpretations and improvisational gifts have won a devoted following. In addition to brilliant interpretations of the core piano repertoire, she is celebrated for her ability to improvise. Highlights from this and recent seasons include recitals given around the world, from Avery Fisher Hall to the Sydney Opera House, and performances at music festivals from Edinburgh to Tanglewood. She has performed with many of the world’s most respected orchestras. An award-winning and best-selling recording artist, her most recent album (on Orchid Classics) featured Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, ExPatria and her signature improvisations, winning her a Latin Grammy for Best Classical Album. Previous recordings include Bach and Beyond, which garnered two Echo Klassik Awards, and Baroque, which was nominated for a Grammy. Gabriela debuted as a composer in 2011 with ExPatria, a tone poem for piano and orchestra written in response to Venezuela’s corruption and violence. A staunch advocate of human rights whose voice reaches beyond classical music, she was recently named an Honorary Consul by Amnesty International. Gabriela gave her first public performance at age 5. Her concerto debut in her hometown of Caracas at age 8 led to a scholarship to study privately in the United States. She continued her studies at London’s Royal Academy of Music, graduating with the highest honors. She lives in Barcelona with her husband and two daughters. Visit www.gabrielamontero.com.

GABRIELA LENA FRANK, Houston Symphony composer-in-residence Identity has always been at the center of Gabriela Lena Frank’s music. Born in Berkeley, California, to a mother of mixed Peruvian/ Chinese ancestry and a father of Lithuanian/Jewish descent, Gabriela explores her multicultural heritage most ardently through her compositions. Inspired by the works of Bela Bartók and Alberto Ginastera, Gabriela is something of a musical anthropologist. She has travelled extensively throughout South America, and her pieces reflect and refract her studies of 32

Latin-American folklore, incorporating poetry, mythology and native musical styles into a western classical framework that is uniquely her own. She writes challenging idiomatic parts for solo instrumentalists, vocalists, chamber ensembles and orchestras.

NOTES ESCARAMUZA FOR STRINGS, PERCUSSION, HARP AND PIANO Gabriela Lena Frank (1972–) COMPOSER’S NOTE: Escaramuza, which signifies “skirmish” in the Spanish language, is inspired by the kachampa music of Andean Peru. Celebrating the pre-Hispanic Inca warrior, the kachampa dance is executed by athletic men who convey a triumphant, even joyful, spirit. Inspired by the kachampa dances done with fast-snapping ropes that I’ve witnessed in Peru, especially in Paucartambo during the Virgen de la Carmen festival, I’ve created a brightly chiseled romp in an asymmetrical 7/8 rhythm that is launched after an extended bass drum solo. Through most of Escaramuza, no section of the ensemble is allowed to rest for long, maintaining the high energy typical of kachampas. —Gabriela Lena Frank The Instruments. PIANO CONCERTO IN A MINOR, OPUS 16 Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) In a Tweet. This feast of melody and pianistic power helped the young Grieg make his name. The Back Story. Grieg discovered that having a newborn in the house wasn’t conducive to work. Entrusting his wife and baby daughter to his in-laws, the 25-year-old stashed himself in a cottage and devoted summer 1868 to a life-changing project. “The heat was unbearable,” he wrote a friend. “I undoubtedly felt lethargic because of the temperature, but I also felt that now was the time to get on with it. The result is that I have written a concerto for piano and orchestra which I believe contains a number of good things.” That’s modesty for you; the concerto has charmed audiences for generations. In 1870, Grieg met Franz Liszt, the day’s most celebrated pianist, and showed him the score—which Liszt played through on sight. “Keep on, I tell you,” the delighted Liszt told him. “You have what is needed, and don’t let them frighten you.” The Instruments. 2 flutes (1 doubling piccolo), 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, timpani and strings What to Listen For. After a rumble of the kettledrums grabs everyone’s attention, the soloist enters with a flourish. The concerto celebrates the power and poetry of the piano, which hurls thunderbolts, sings out big-hearted melodies and rivals the orchestra’s impact. And the piano kicks up its heels in the finale, whose opening harks back to an athletic Norwegian folk dance. But the orchestra has juicy moments, too. The woodwinds introduce the first movement’s winsome main theme. The strings glow in the second movement. And

NOTES | ANDRÉS CONDUCTS SYMPHONIE FANTASTIQUE | MAY 21, 22 the flute’s sweetness introduces the finale’s big tune. The printed scores for this work were purchased by Mr. H. Wayne Hodge.

SYMPHONIE FANTASTIQUE, OPUS 14 Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) In a Tweet. A lovesick musician experiences hallucinations in this storytelling showpiece. The Back Story. When Berlioz was 23, a British theater company came to Paris performing Shakespeare, and Berlioz became infatuated with the actress who played Juliet, Harriet Smithson. Deluging her with letters got him nowhere, and Berlioz told his father that “nervous exaltation” gave him visions he likened to drug trips. “I suffer so much… that if I did not take a grip of myself, I should shout and roll on the ground,” Berlioz wrote. “I have found only one way of completely satisfying this immense appetite for emotion, and that is music.” The result: Symphonie fantastique. Subtitled “Episode in the Life of an Artist,” it describes the hallucinations that seize a musician who tries to escape heartache though opium. The Instruments. 2 flutes (1 doubling piccolo), 2 oboes (1 doubling English horn), 2 clarinets (1 doubling E-flat clarinet), 4 bassoons, 4 horns, 4 trumpets, 3 trombones, 2 tubas, 4 timpanists, percussion, 2 harps and strings What to Listen For. The drug-induced visions proceed from the lovesick protagonist’s first sight of his beloved to a nightmarish transformation of her into a demon. A melody Berlioz dubbed the idée fixe, representing the sweetheart, ties everything together. The violins introduce the surging theme in “Reveries—Passions,” setting off outbursts that mirror the hero’s emotional upheaval. The idée fixe floats atop a waltz in “A Ball.” “In the Country” depicts the musician enjoying the peaceful outdoors until thoughts of his sweetheart torment him. In “March to the Scaffold,” he imagines himself being hustled to the gallows for killing his sweetheart. And a squealing clarinet distorts the idée fixe in “Dream of a Witches’ Sabbath,” turning the beloved into a reveler in a satanic rampage. ©2016 Steven Brown The printed scores for this work were purchased by Dr. Gary L. Hollingsworth & Dr. Ken Hyde.

NOTES CONCERTO FOR ORCHESTRA Witold Lutosławski (1913-1994) In a Tweet. The modern orchestra’s color and dynamism turn age-old musical forms into the stuff of a sonic blockbuster. The Back Story. Poland’s Witold Lutosławski survived some of the 20th century’s greatest upheavals. When he was a boy, Bolshevik revolutionaries killed his father. On graduating from the Warsaw Conservatory, Lutosławski had to go into the Polish army, and his platoon was captured by the Nazis. But Lutosławski escaped and sneaked to Warsaw, where he supported himself during the Nazi occupation by playing piano in cafes. After the Soviet Union took over Poland, its cultural chiefs denounced Lutosławski’s Symphony No. 1. He forged a musical language that enabled him to avoid Soviet wrath but still express himself: His Concerto for Orchestra premiered in 1954. In 1985, the Houston Symphony welcomed Lutosławski to Jones Hall to conduct this concerto and other works. The program’s soloists included then-principal harpist Paula Page. “I remember Lutosławski as being diminutive, quiet and kind of shy,” Paula recalls. “He was not shy, however, about his music and how he wanted it performed. He was a complete gentleman and highly appreciated and respected by the orchestra. It was one of the highlights of my career to perform these works with a legendary composer on the podium.” The Instruments. 3 flutes (2 doubling piccolo), 2 oboes (1 doubling English horn), 3 clarinets (1 doubling bass clarinet), 3 bassoons (1 doubling contrabassoon), 4 horns, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion, 2 harps, piano, celesta and strings What to Listen For. The Concerto for Orchestra pays homage to Bela Bartók’s work of the same name, a 20th-century classic the Houston Symphony performed last season. Like Bartók’s concerto, Lutosławski’s repeatedly thrusts sections of the ensemble to the forefront, testing the musicians’ virtuosity, color, subtlety and power. Lutosławski draws on centuries-old genres such as the passacaglia and toccata, favorites of J.S. Bach. But the music leaves the forms’ original boundaries far behind as it ranges from visceral force to whirlwind speed and on to gossamer delicacy. “Intrada” harkens back to the stately processionals that opened some Baroque suites. “Capriccio notturno” combines a nocturne’s shadowy pianissimos with the breeziness of a caprice. The brasses ring out dramatically in “Arioso.” The finale’s three connected sections add up to the work’s grandest statement.

Houston First accomplishes this through its services, attractions and venues by inspiring the world to think Houston First; Houstonians to explore Houston First; and employees to deliver Houston First class service. May 2016 37

NOTES | THE COSMOS—AN HD ODYSSEY | MAY 26, 27, 28, 29 “Passacaglia” begins quietly in the orchestra’s depths, where the much-repeated theme underlies a surge in sound and energy. “Toccata” amps up the flashiness of baroque keyboard showpieces. And “Chorale” introduces a broad, flowing theme that counterpoints the orchestra’s flourishes in a resounding finale.

SYMPHONY NO. 9 IN E MINOR, OPUS 95 (FROM THE NEW WORLD) Antonín Dvorˇ ák (1841-1904) In a Tweet. Coming to the United States inspired Dvorˇák to create the tuneful, dramatic symphony that has become his best-known work. The Back Story. As Antonín Dvorˇák approached his 50th birthday, he received an unexpected offer. Jeannette Thurber, a New York philanthropist, invited him to move to the United States to direct the National Conservatory of Music of America, which she had founded in 1884. She offered an annual salary of $15,000—the equivalent of about $400,000 today. In September 1892, Dvorˇák arrived in New York with his wife and two oldest children. “I came to discover what young Americans have in them and to help them express it,” he said. “The new American school of music must strike its roots deeply into its own soil.” As a composer whose works were nourished by his native Bohemia’s folk music, Dvorˇák spoke from experience. He gladly explored the United States’ music. Henry T. Burleigh, one of the conservatory’s African-American students, sang him spirituals and other American fare. “Dvorˇák especially liked ‘Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen’ and ‘Go Down Moses,’’’

Wilshire’s unique sound quickly caught on, landing the singers a record deal with Columbia Records and Warner/Chappell Music. The duo wrote their hit single, “Special,” which climbed the Billboard Top 20 chart. They toured with artists like Train and Seal, as well as performing live on Late Night, The Sharon Osbourne Show, The Wayne Brady Show and Pepsi Smash. Burleigh said. Though other musicians provided samples of Native American music, today’s scholars question their authenticity. In January 1893, Dvorˇák began composing a symphony inspired by his first U.S. experiences. By May, the work was complete, and that autumn, Dvorˇák added its now-famous subtitle: “From the New World.” The Instruments. 2 flutes (1 doubling piccolo), 2 oboes (1 doubling English horn), 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion and strings What to Listen For. The symphony’s lyricism and drama have made it Dvorˇák’s best-known work. Does the title “From the New World” mean that it quotes American music? No, Dvorˇák said. But his general impressions of American music fed into it. The symphony’s slow movement, with its lilting English horn melody, has practically been adopted as American music. Dvorˇák said he drew inspiration from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s “The Song of Hiawatha,” and he pointed to the scene in which Hiawatha woos his sweetheart Minnehaha. Though he didn’t go into detail, the music might evoke Longfellow’s verses about the couple walking hand-in-hand through forests and meadows. Dvorˇák said the bounding third movement also sprang from “Hiawatha,” specifically the episode in which the hero’s friend PauPuk-Keewis dances at the couple’s wedding: “Treading softly like a panther/ Then more swiftly and still swifter,/ Whirling, spinning ’round in circles,/ Leaping o’er the guests assembled … Till the leaves went whirling with him.” ©2016 Steven Brown The printed scores for this work were purchased by Mr. & Mrs. Neil N. Fahmy.

THE SUSTAINABILITY FUND

The Houston Symphony Pays Special Tribute to 137 Donors Who Made Transformational Gifts to Complete The Sustainability Fund On December 31, 2015, the Houston Symphony celebrated an extraordinary achievement: the completion of a five-year $15 million Sustainability Fund which has transformed the orchestra’s financial position. Five years ago, under the leadership of Board President Bobby Tudor and Executive Director/CEO Mark C. Hanson, the Houston Symphony began a journey to strengthen its core business through a five-year financial plan. This plan set a path for the orchestra to strengthen both contributed and earned revenue, in order to invest in its core artistic endeavors and deepen its engagement with the Greater Houston community. The Symphony was able to close out the campaign thanks to challenge grant funds totaling $1,050,000 provided by Bobby and Phoebe Tudor, Cora Sue and Harry Mach, Janice Barrow, Steve and Joella Mach and Robert and Jane Cizik. The Ciziks provided the final $500,000 to allow the Symphony to reach its $15 million Sustainability goal and to close out the fund. The Houston Symphony thanks the 137 donors who made this important investment in our orchestra’s future, positioning the Symphony for success as we pursue the ambitions outlined in our Strategic Plan, Vision 2025: to be an orchestra for all Houstonians, and to become America’s most relevant and accessible top-ten orchestra by 2025.

BACKSTAGE PASS

Caroline Schafer, trumpet Caroline Schafer, originally from Chicago, won the Second Trumpet position for the Houston Symphony in January 2016. She moved to Houston last July to play as a contracted substitute with the orchestra. Previously, Caroline played with the St. Louis Symphony for four years as acting second trumpet. She also played two seasons with the New World Symphony in Miami. Before moving to Miami, Caroline studied at the Colburn School in Los Angeles and substituted with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. While studying in Los Angeles, Caroline was invited to three summer seasons and three international tours with the UBS Verbier Festival Orchestra in Switzerland, performing under the batons of Charles Dutoit, Kurt Masur, Valery Gergiev, Gianandrea Noseda, Paavo Järvi, Ludovic Morlot, Yuri Temirkanov, Daniel Harding and other international conductors. Caroline earned her bachelor’s degree at Northwestern University, studying with Barbara Butler and Charles Geyer. Beginning with the Houston Symphony: I first played with the Houston Symphony as a substitute for two weeks last May on two very big programs that included Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra and Mahler’s Symphony No. 3. The fifth movement of the Bartók Concerto has a big second trumpet solo. When I arrived at the very first morning rehearsal, Maestro OrozcoEstrada announced, “Okay, we will begin with the fifth movement of the Bartók Concerto.” Forget about getting comfortable; a big solo was my first few notes with the Houston Symphony! Looking forward to this season: I’m especially excited to perform Berlioz’ Symphonie fantastique, Lutostowski’s Concerto and Dvorˇak’s No. 9. Being a part of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in the last two months were also amazing experiences. Musical beginnings: I began playing the trumpet in fourth grade. We got to choose our instruments one night at school, and I started group lessons right away. I studied the piano before that, so I already had a head start reading music. I really liked being part of the band (yes, I was completely a “band nerd”). Everyone kept telling me I had a beautiful sound, so I stuck with it. In high school, I skipped lunch so I could practice, and I often stayed after rehearsals to play more in the stairwell. At Northwestern, I remember many, many nights of riding back to my apartment on my bicycle in a Chicago winter because I stayed at school to practice. I was always very engaged in becoming a better musician, and I lost sense of time while practicing, in the best of ways. On a hike in the Swiss Alps Earliest musical memory: At an early age, I remember my father playing Bach’s Goldberg Variations on the piano downstairs as I fell asleep upstairs. The piece still holds a special place in my heart. My parents always had a lot of classical music playing on the stereo, especially works for the piano by Bach, Beethoven and Mozart.

Inspiration to become a musician: I was hooked from the first time I heard a full brass section in a world class orchestra! There is absolutely nothing like it in the world, and it still gives me goose bumps. Outside of Jones Hall: You’ll often find me walking, cycling or running my pup, Emma. I enjoy yoga, and I’m getting into paddle boarding on the bayous! I also love traveling and cooking. Current playlist: This week, I’m listening to Keith Jarrett and the soundtrack to JFK by John Williams. Also on the playlist are Tigran Hamasyan’s Shadow Theater, Leo Kottke’s “Up Tempo” and songs of Brandi Carlile.
