Mark C. Hanson Executive Director/CEO

www.houstonsymphony.org

He’s here! Andrés Orozco-Estrada officially begins his tenure as our Music Director with a free performance at Miller Outdoor Theatre on September 12. This celebratory performance, open to all of Houston, represents Andrés’ commitment to introduce more and more Houstonians to the beauty and power of live orchestral music. And to help us reach even more music lovers throughout the region, ABC Channel 13 will be broadcasting the concert live, courtesy of Houston First Corporation, our Music Director Launch Presenting Partner. We are also excited and privileged to welcome composer Gabriela Lena Frank to the Houston Symphony family. Gabriela has embarked upon a three-year relationship with us as the Symphony’s Composer-in-Residence. Influenced by the music of Peru, Gabriela has captured a flirtatious love song against a storm of guitars in Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout. Don’t miss Andrés leading the orchestra in the performance of Leyendas on both September 12 at Miller Outdoor Theatre and September 14 at Jones Hall as part of our annual Fiesta Sinfonica concert. Also on the program both of these nights, Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero is certain to dazzle with her performance of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. The following week, in the first program of our classical series on September 19, 20 and 21, Andrés conducts the world premiere of Gabriela Lena Frank’s Karnavalingo, which she wrote especially for the Houston Symphony. We look forward to getting to know Gabriela through her music over the coming years, and we invite you to learn more about her through the profile on page 8. As we enter our second century as an orchestra, we kick off this momentous season with a very special Opening Night Gala and Concert on September 13. Chairs Barbara and Pat McCelvey have created a spectacular evening for Andrés’ first Opening Night in Houston. With his native Colombia serving as inspiration, the black-tie gala at The Corinthian will be unforgettable. Our deepest appreciation also extends to ConocoPhillips for continuing its decades-long support of the Opening Night Concert. This year, the award-winning and talented trumpeter Alison Balsom joins Andrés and the orchestra on a program that includes Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto in E-flat major. We hope that you will join us throughout Andrés’ inaugural season for the exciting programming, innovative concert experiences and world-class artistry for which the Houston Symphony is renowned. We look forward to seeing you!

Meet Gabriela Lena Frank, the Houston Symphony’s New Composer-in-Residence Please join us in welcoming Gabriela Lena Frank to the Houston Symphony family! This season, we are excited to embark upon a three-year journey with Gabriela as composer-in-residence. On September 19, 20 and 21, the orchestra, under the baton of Andrés Orozco-Estrada, performs the world premiere of Gabriela’s Karnavalingo, written especially for the Houston Symphony.

Identity has always been at the center of Gabriela Lena Frank’s music. Born in Berkeley, California, to a mother of Peruvian/Chinese ancestry and a father of Lithuanian/ Jewish descent, she explores her multicultural heritage most ardently through her compositions. Inspired by the works of Béla Bartók and Alberto Ginastera, Gabriela is something of a musical anthropologist. She has traveled extensively throughout South America, and her pieces reflect and refract her studies of Latin American folklore, incorporating poetry, mythology and native musical styles into a western classical framework that is uniquely her own. She writes challenging idiomatic parts for solo instrumentalists, vocalists, chamber ensembles and orchestras. She writes, “There’s usually a story line behind my music, a scenario or character.” While her works can be enjoyed solely from her music, her program notes enhance the listener’s experience, for they describe how a piano part mimics a marimba or pan-pipes, or how a movement is based on a particular type of folk song, where the singer is mockingly crying. Even a brief glance at her titles evokes specific imagery: Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout, Cuatro Canciones Andinas and La Llorona: Tone Poem for Viola and Orchestra. Gabriela’s compositions also reflect her virtuosity as a pianist—when not composing, she is a sought-after performer, specializing in contemporary repertoire. This season, Gabriela begins a three-year tenure as composer-in-residence to the Houston Symphony, for whom she wrote Karnavalingo to welcome incoming music director Andrés OrozcoEstrada. She recently composed La Llorona: Tone Poem for Viola and Orchestra for this orchestra and principal viola Wayne Brooks, performing under the baton of Hans Graf She also serves as composer-in-residence to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. A 2009 recipient of the prestigious John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship to assist in research and artistic creation, Gabriela’s recent premieres include Will-o’-the-Wisp for piccolo player Mary Kay Fink and the Cleveland Orchestra; Saints for the Berkeley Symphony, soprano Jessica Rivera and the San Francisco Girls Chorus; and Concertino Cusqueño for the Philadelphia Orchestra. She has developed a number of projects with the Pulitzer Prize-winning Cuban playwright Nilo Cruz, among them La Centinela y la Paloma (The Keeper and the Dove), a song cycle for Dawn Upshaw and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and Journey of the Shadow for the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra.

www.houstonsymphony.org

Other recent premieres include Nocturno Nazqueño for the New York International Piano Competition; Hilos for the ALIAS Chamber Ensemble; Puntos Suspensivos for Ballet Hispanico; Inca Dances for guitarist Manuel Barrueco and Cuarteto Latinoamericano (2009 Latin Grammy® for Best Classical Contemporary Composition); New Andean Songs for the Los Angeles Philharmonic; Peregrinos for the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra; and Two Mountain Songs for a consortium comprising the Young People’s Chorus of New York City, the San Francisco Girls Chorus and Anima. Having collaborated with a broad range of artists, Gabriela’s other works include Quijotadas for the Brentano String Quartet; Jalapeño Blues for Chanticleer, based on the Spanglish poetry of Trinidad Sánchez Jr.; Compadrazgo, a double concerto for David Finckel and Wu Han with the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra; Dos Canciones de Cifar for baritone and piano, commissioned by the Marilyn Horne Foundation; ¡Chayraq! and Ritmos Anchinos for the Silk Road Project; Cinco Danzas de Chambi for viola and piano, commissioned by the Aspen Music Festival; Canto de Harawi for Da Camera of Houston; Manchay Tiempo for the Seattle Symphony; Inkarrí for the Kronos Quartet; Illapa: Tone Poem for Flute and Orchestra for flutist Leone Buyse and the Shepherd School of Music Symphony Orchestra; and Three Latin-American Dances for Orchestra for the Utah Symphony. Three Latin-American Dances for Orchestra was subsequently recorded by the Utah Symphony (Reference Recording) and Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout by the Chiara String Quartet (New Voice). Recent recordings include an all-Gabriela disc with the ALIAS Chamber Ensemble (Naxos), Inca Dances with guitarist Manuel Barrueco and the Cuarteto Latinoamericano (Tonar Music) and several chamber/orchestral works (Filarmonika) as part of the groundbreaking “Caminos del Inka” project. Gabriela attended Rice University where she earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees. She studied composition with Paul Cooper, Ellsworth Milburn and Sam Jones, and piano with Jeanne Kierman Fischer. Gabriela credits Fischer with introducing her to the music of Ginastera, Bartók and other composers who used folk elements in their work. She received a DMA from the University of Michigan. Gabriela Lena Frank’s music is published exclusively by G. Schirmer, Inc.

A Celebration of the Century—The Centennial Ball The once-in-a-lifetime Houston Symphony Centennial Ball celebrated the Symphony’s most memorable season as one of our city’s oldest and most vibrant performing arts institutions. For the first time, the glamorous white-tie soiree was held at the Houston Symphony’s home, The Jesse H. Jones Hall for the Performing Arts, with an unprecedented five-tiered stage extension completely transforming the auditorium into a spectacular setting to allow for a concert, seated dinner and dancing. Five hundred eighty-five guests walked the red carpet to pay tribute to the individuals, corporations and foundations that have translated their love of music into leadership support of the Houston Symphony. This evening raised a record-breaking $2.6 million for the Symphony’s Steven & Joella Mach, Rita Graf, Isabel Lummis, Education and Community Programming. Mike Stude, Cora Sue & Harry Mach and Hans Graf Multi-generational Centennial Ball Chairs, Cora Sue and Harry Mach and their son Steven and his wife, Joella Mach, greeted guests at the champagne prelude before the special Houston Symphony concert. After the concert—conducted by Steven Reineke and featuring Matthew Morrison with the Houston Symphony—guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the lobby and perused the silent auction. When the dinner chimes rang, guests re-entered the auditorium, transformed by The Events Company, for a sophisticated dinner catered by Jackson and Company and paired with wines by Spec’s Wines, Spirits and Finer Foods. Guests danced the night away to the sounds of The Richard Brown Orchestra inside the hall. An additional 130 guests poured into the Jones Hall lobbies to join After Party Chairs Divya and Chris Brown, who created a sensation by flying in New York City’s DJ Kalkutta. The party rocked until the wee hours of the morning under a 50-foot light show on the hall’s white travertine walls.

What an Experience! Centennial Ball Auction Advisor Betty Tutor, along with the 43 members of the Auction Committee, created 74 experiential packages ranging from cuisine to travel and everything in between. These spectacular packages included: a collection of 100 fine wines, a Renior lithograph, a one-of-akind masterpiece pearl necklace by Franco Valobra, dinners in amazing homes, and magical trips to incredible homes around the world, including Aspen, Jackson Hole, Hawaii and France. The auction raised a record $300,000. The Symphony thanks everyone who purchased an auction item and the wonderful donors who made the auction possible.

EducaTIon and Community Engagement

Free Summer Neighborhood Concerts Strengthen Community Connections This year’s Summer Neighborhood Concert series celebrated the diverse musical contributions that together reflect our city and that have influenced the magnificent sound of music the Houston Symphony and orchestras across the world perform every day. Each June, the Symphony hits the road to perform this series of free concerts throughout Greater Houston. Thanks to our generous sponsors, the orchestra traveled to 10 community venues and reached nearly 7,000 concertgoers. Among the venues we visited were schools, churches and community centers. We deliv-

ered music to new and diverse audiences, including a visit to the Chinese Community Center, churches such as Windsor Village United Methodist and Wheeler Avenue Baptist, and venues serving Houston’s Hispanic community, including Ripley House Neighborhood Center in Houston’s historic East End. Although one important purpose of the free concerts is to share the experience of classical music with audiences who may not otherwise have access, the Houston Symphony strives to make a deeper, more meaningful impact by building relationships within the communities and schools we visit. The Pasadena Independent School District (ISD), for example, shares a valued relationship with the Houston Symphony as well as a commitment to music education. Before this year’s Summer Neighborhood Concert at Pasadena ISD’s Sam Rayburn High School, Associate Conductor Robert Franz worked with the school’s orchestra in a two-hour educational clinic. Together with bassoonist Eric Arbiter, Robert also worked this year with students from schools in the Ripley House Charter School District. Community connections were also important in the Symphony’s performance at the Chinese Community Center. Suggested by the Symphony’s newly formed Asian Leadership Council, the performance drew a standing-room-only crowd that included the winner of this year’s Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Competition, Chinese-born clarinetist Lin Ma. Expect to see us out in communities across Houston next summer, and make plans to catch one of our many free concerts! To learn more about connecting with the Houston Symphony through our Summer Neighborhood Concerts, please reach out to Amanda Dinitz, Chief of Strategic Initiatives, at (713) 238-1456.

The Houston Symphony acknowledges those individuals, corporations and foundations that support our education and community engagement activities. Each year, these activities impact the lives of more than 97,000 children and students and provide access to our world-class orchestra for more than 140,000 Houstonians free of charge. Andrés Orozco-Estrada, born in Colombia and trained in Vienna, is one of the most sought after conductors of his generation. He begins his tenure as the Houston Symphony’s 15th Music Director this month. In addition to his appointment in Houston, Andrés will take up the position of chief conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra during the 2014-15 season, and he will become principal guest conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra beginning in the 2015-16 season. Since the 2009-10 season, he has held the post of music director of the Tonkünstler Orchester Niederösterreich, one of the most important institutions of traditional Austrian music culture, which holds subscription series at the Vienna Musikverein and is orchestra-in-residence at the Grafenegg Festival. He will conclude his tenure with the Tonkünstler Orchestra in summer 2015. From 2009 through 2013, Andrés was also principal conductor at the Basque National Orchestra in San Sebastián, Spain. As a guest conductor, he regularly works with the world’s most prominent orchestras, including the Vienna, Munich, London, Rotterdam, Royal Stockholm and La Scala Philharmonic Orchestras; Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra; Mahler Chamber Orchestra; London, City of Birmingham and Gothenburg Symphony Orchestras; the Santa Cecilia Orchestra in Rome; Radio Symphony Orchestra of Hamburg; the Orchestre National de France; Verbier Festival Orchestra; and the

St. Louis and Oregon Symphonies. Following his debut with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 2010, Andrés was hailed “a brilliant stand-in” for EsaPekka Salonen and celebrated as an “eminent talent” by Austria’s Wiener Zeitung and Die Presse. In November 2012, Andrés stepped in once again with just one rehearsal’s notice to conduct the Vienna Philharmonic in the Musikverein for Riccardo Muti and was praised as a “stand-in worth his weight in gold” and “an inspired master of communication” by the Viennese daily newspapers Kurier and Der Standard. In the 2015-16 season, he will make his official debut with the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra on its subscription season. Born in 1977 in Medellín (Colombia), Andrés began his musical studies on the violin and had his first conducting lessons at age 15. In 1997, he moved to Vienna where he joined the conducting class of Uroš Lajovic, pupil of the legendary Hans Swarowsky, at the renowned Vienna Music Academy and completed his degree with distinction by conducting the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Vienna Musikverein. The emphasis of his artistic work lies in the Romantic repertoire and Viennese classics. At the same time, Andrés shows a keen interest in contemporary music and regularly performs premieres of Austrian composers as well as compositions of Spanish and South American origin. He currently lives in Vienna.

or this first program during which Houston welcomes Andrés OrozcoEstrada, Andrés created an evening of variety and warmth that encompasses the many exciting aspects of being the Music Director of Houston’s symphony. To open the program, Andrés chose a piece by José Rozo Contreras, a composer with whom he shares a few things. Contreras was Colombian, and he too studied in Vienna. The Waltz and Trio of Contreras’ embodies the grace and elegance of a Viennese waltz with a touch of Colombian flair, which is one way to describe Andrés’ conducting style. The influence of Spanish melodies and rhythms is so important in music of Latin America and also in the music of French composers in the early 20th century. Maurice Ravel found the culture of Spain intoxicatSeptember 2014 19

NOTES | ¡BIENVENIDO, ANDRÉS! CONCERT | SEPTEMBER 12 ing, and you can hear that in his Alborada del gracicoso (Morning Song of the Jester). This music is full of high spirits with a comedic dance that imitates the strumming of a guitar, and it concludes in a grand and raucous fashion. It highlights the Houston Symphony’s technical brilliance. Andrés is excited to perform music of American composers as is befitting an American orchestra, and what better icon of our music than George Gershwin? His hugely popular Rhapsody in Blue is a perfect combination of classical elements with the sultry and electric energy of jazz. It is the ideal vehicle for Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero in her first collaboration with Andrés. Gabriela is famous for her ability to improvise, and Gershwin’s work showcases her technical ability along with her inspired and spontaneous interpretation. Next, we move to Brazilian music as seen through the eyes—or ears—of Frenchman Darius Milhaud. Milhaud’s Le boeuf sur le toit (The Ox on the Roof) is an exuberant dance from start to finish. Mexican composer José Pablo Moncayo also embraces dance, in

this case the huapango, a popular Mexican folk dance. Influenced by the music of Peru, the Houston Symphony’s Composer-inResidence Gabriela Lena Frank has captured a flirtatious love song against a storm of guitars in Coqueteos. And to close out the program, Andrés returns to the festive popular music of his country with Tolú, a celebratory dance full of energy—a most fitting close to the program. – Aurelie Desmarais

– Aurelie Desmarais

Séguin and Leonard Slatkin. In recital, she has appeared at the festivals of Salzburg, Istanbul, Kuhr, Ravinia and Tanglewood, as well as major venues through the world. She is annually invited to the Progetto Martha Argerich Festival in Lugano and has toured with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, the Cleveland Orchestra and with cellist Gautier Capuçon. Montero’s unique personal style comes from her improvisational gifts. “I connect to my audience in a completely unique way—and they connect with me. Because improvisation is such a huge part of who I am, it is the most natural and spontaneous way I can express myself.” She often invites audiences to suggest melodies for improvisations. This desire for expression, led her to write ExPatria, a composition for piano and orchestra. The work premiered in London and was heard on tour in Germany with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. Montero’s innovative perspectives are also in demand outside the classical music CONTINUED ON PAGE 27

OVERTURE TO LE NOZZE DI FIGARO (THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO), K.492 Wolfgang Amadè Mozart (1756-1791) In a Tweet. @HouSymphony: This overture is the breathless, effervescent beginning of one of Mozart’s funniest and most touching operas. #HSOpeningNight The Back Story. Mozart’s opera about Figaro’s effort to forestall his master, the lustful Count Almaviva, from de-flowering his bride, Susanna, on their wedding night, is widely hailed as one of the world’s greatest comic operas. The play by Pierre Caron de Beaumarchais, from which it was adapted, was equally famous when it was produced in pre-revolutionary Paris in 1784. With typical last-minute haste, Mozart did not write the overture until April 29, two days before the opera’s premiere on May 1, 1786. The Instruments. Pairs of flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns and trumpets; timpani, strings. What to Listen For. The Marriage of Figaro overture employs an entirely new set of themes, exhibited in a brilliant piece of writing that ideally anticipates the hectic events taking place in the opera. The exuberant overture is cast in a form typical of Italian opera buffa overtures of the period. It has a sonata-style exposition of several themes, but omits the central development section and proceeds immediately to a restatement of the themes. The September 2014 23

NOTES | OPENING NIGHT WITH ANDRÉS | SEPTEMBER 13 composer apparently began to write a slow movement at the center of the overture, but ripped that page out of the manuscript, according to Mozart scholar William Mann. © Carl Cunningham

The Instruments. Three flutes and oboes (with alternate piccolo and English horn), two clarinets, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, two bassoons, contrabassoon, four horns, three trumpets and trombones, tuba, timpani, a large percussion battery, two harps and strings.

TRUMPET CONCERTO IN E-FLAT MAJOR, HOB. VIIE:1

What to Listen For. The Promenade, which precedes and separates several of the movements, is set in constantly shifting meters, and is considered by several commentators as a wry self-portrait of the bulky, disheveled-looking Mussorgsky shambling between the 10 Hartmann artworks that he depicted in music. Changes in tonality, tempo and orchestration at several repetitions reflect the composer’s changing moods as he viewed different pictures. The final statement of the promenade, a ghostly whispered statement for woodwinds and tremolo strings, follows the eighth movement describing the ancient Roman catacombs in Paris. This promenade bears the separate title, “Cum Mortuis in Lingua Mortua” (“With the Dead in the Language of the Dead”).

Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) In a Tweet. @HouSymphony: This virtuoso trumpet concerto has a graceful beginning; a slow, pensive middle; and a fast, playful finale. #HSOpeningNight The Back Story. Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto was composed in 1796 for Anton Weidinger, trumpet soloist at the Viennese court and a noted technician who made many mechanical improvements on the instrument. Weidinger had invented a so-called keyed trumpet, which greatly expanded the number of notes in the musical scale the trumpet could play. Weidinger’s keyed trumpet found mixed favor after being criticized for its weak, oboe-sounding tone. It was eventually replaced by the valve trumpet that has evolved into standard use today. A full orchestral score of the concerto did not appear until 1931, according to Haydn scholar H. C. Robbins Landon, and it was only through recordings in the 1930s and 1940s that the work gained modern popularity. The Instruments. Pairs of flutes, oboes, bassoons, horns, trumpets, timpani and a string ensemble. What to Listen For. The concerto is a fine example of Haydn’s robust musical style and the thematic unity and adventurous spirit that marked his mature works. The thematic material of the opening sonata movement is largely derived from the main theme, while many colorful chromatic touches in the melody line indicate the expanded possibilities Haydn explored on Weidinger’s new trumpet. The slow movement is a simple, song-like structure set in the pastoral rhythm of a Sicilian dance. Its velvety key, A-flat major, was a novelty for the trumpet in that era. Brilliance and technical feats are reserved for the lively concluding rondo, especially some tongue-twisting ornaments and acrobatic octave leaps in the solo trumpet part. © Carl Cunningham

TABLEAUX D’UNE EXPOSITION (PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION) Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881) Orchestral version by Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) In a Tweet. @HouSymphony: Ravel orchestrated Mussorgsky’s revolutionary, heartfelt memorial to his late friend. The result: fireworks. #HSOpeningNight The Back Story. Mussorgsky’s famed piano suite was inspired by a posthumous exhibition of works by his friend, the designer-architect Victor Hartmann, in 1874. Conductor Serge Koussevitsky became the catalyst for Ravel’s orchestral version of the score, when he commissioned the composer in 1920 to make the transcription for an orchestral concert series he sponsored in Paris at the time. The score was completed and premiered in 1922. 24

NOTES | WATTS PLAYS RACHMANINOFF 2 | SEPTEMBER 19-21 KARNAVALINGO Gabriela Lena Frank (1972-) Composer’s Note. Karnavalingo, a short lively work for orchestra, draws on the musical culture of my mother’s beautiful homeland of Perú. Despite its size, this small Andean nation boasts a rich and varied sound, commingling native Indian, African and Spanish influences. In Karnavalingo, syncopated rhythms common to the “karnavalito” style proliferate, as do typical gestures such as notes incessantly repeated (like the panpipe-inspired “chuta” figure) and overlapping trumpet calls, brightly sounded. Of course, as I put my own spin on these salient elements, I’m hoping to join what is essentially a constantly evolving tradition despite roots firmly entrenched in the past. This work is dedicated to Edward Doughtie, a beloved English professor and residential college master at Will Rice College of Rice University, who passed away in the spring of 2014. Ed, an accomplished amateur violinist/violist, enthusiastically encouraged my own fledgling efforts as a freshman composition major at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music and remained a lifelong cheerleader as my life blossomed as a musician, which I’ll always treasure. The Instruments. Piccolo, two flutes, two oboes, English horn, two clarinets, two bassoons, two horns, two trumpets, two trombones, timpani, percussion, harp, piano and strings. © Gabriela Lena Frank

PIANO CONCERTO NO. 2 IN C MINOR, OPUS 18 Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) In a Tweet. @HouSymphony: Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto demonstrates how the piano can sing ravishing melodies but also bowl you over with sheer force. The Back Story. Dark, moody sentiments often lurk just below the surface of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s music, and the gloomy chords that open his Second Piano Concerto represent one of the composer’s blackest inspirations. The concerto followed a three-year period of depression, during which he suffered a complete mental block and could not complete any new composition. During those three years, he made his living as a touring pianist and began a career as a conductor, restoring confidence in his creative ability only after hypnotic treatment from a psychiatrist. This concerto was the first result of that successful treatment. The Instruments. Two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, four horns, three trombones, timpani and strings. What to Listen For. The concerto opens with dark, tolling piano chords. The clarinet and strings then take up the passionate main theme, followed by a subsidiary theme first stated by the cellos against a rippling piano accompaniment. The piano itself presents the lyrical second theme. While a fragment of the main theme in the woodwinds signals the beginning of the development, this whole section is increasingly dominated by livelier tempos and a brisk new theme that totally occupies the soloist, expanding as it marches along with other thematic fragments. Finally, it becomes a full-fledged theme, challenging the return of the frowning principal theme with its thick chords as the themes are restated in a dramatic conclusion to the movement. A short introduction sets the tone of a nocturne in the Adagio, 32

www.houstonsymphony.org

whose main theme is presented first by the flute and clarinet, then by the piano. As the three-part movement moves into its central section, the music becomes increasingly animated, culminating in a cadenza. This leads back to the main theme, this time played by the violins. The finale simulates a large Rondo best remembered for its passionate secondary theme, which also gained fame in the world of popular music as the song, “Full Moon and Empty Arms.” © Carl Cunningham The printed music for Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 was donated by The Joan and Marvin Kaplan Foundation.

EIN HELDENLEBEN, OPUS 40 Richard Strauss (1864-1949) In a Tweet. @HouSymphony: Ein Heldenleben is Richard Strauss’ flamboyant tale of himself as the imaginary hero, complete with portraits of enemies, battles and love. The Back Story. With the possible exception of Strauss’ Alpine Symphony, his huge tone poem, A Hero’s Life, is unequaled in the size of the orchestral ensemble and the complexity of its thematic interplay. But, in keeping with the careful public image heroes must maintain, it displays a narrower musical personality than many of Strauss’ earlier symphonic poems. Ein Heldenleben was the first of two instances in which Strauss played the dangerous game of painting a self-portrait in music. The Instruments. Piccolo, three flutes, four oboes, English horn, two clarinets, E-flat clarinet, bass clarinet, three bassoons, contrabassoon, eight horns, five trumpets, three trombones, two tubas, timpani, percussion, two harps and strings. What to Listen For. The work is cast as a very large, freely designed composition in six sections, three of which occur in the exposition of the work. The opening section, titled “The Hero,” sets forth his character in five different thematic motives. In the next section, “The Hero’s Adversaries,” listen for several mean-spirited woodwind themes representing the critics. “The Hero’s Companion” (evidently Strauss’ wife, Pauline) is introduced as a capricious woman by means of a long and demanding violin solo played by the concertmaster. In the fourth section, “The Hero at Battle,” the carping critic themes reemerge, to be banished in this bombastic development section. In the fifth section, “The Hero’s Works of Peace,” Strauss combines 31 thematic excerpts from his six previous tone poems, his early opera and two of his early songs. The sixth section, “The Hero’s Retirement from the World,” brings the 45-minute symphonic poem to a close in a typically extended but quietly shimmering Straussian epilogue. © Carl Cunningham The printed music for Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben was donated by Dr. and Mrs. Gage Van Horn.

NOTES | WATTS PLAYS RACHMANINOFF 2 | SEPTEMBER 19-21

BiographY ANDRÉ WATTS, piano André Watts burst upon the music world at age 16 when Leonard Bernstein chose him to make his debut with the New York Philharmonic’s Young People’s Concerts, broadcast nationwide on CBS-TV. Two weeks later, Bernstein asked him to substitute for the ailing Glenn Gould in performances of Liszt’s E-flat Concerto with the New York Philharmonic, thus launching his career in storybook fashion. More than 50 years later, Watts remains one of today’s most celebrated and beloved superstars. A perennial favorite with the Houston Symphony (he last performed here in October 2011) and other orchestras throughout the United States, Watts is also a regular guest at major summer music festivals. In celebration of the Liszt anniversary in 2011, he played all-Liszt recitals throughout the country. André Watts has had a long and frequent association with television, having appeared on numerous programs produced by PBS, the BBC and the Arts and Entertainment Network. His 1976 New York recital, aired on Live from Lincoln Center, was the first full-length recital broadcast on television, and his performance at the 38th Casals Festival in Puerto Rico was nominated for an Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Individual Achievement in Cultural Programming. He performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra on the occasion of the orchestra’s 100th Anniversary Gala on PBS. Watts’ extensive discography includes works by Gershwin, Chopin, Liszt and Tchaikovsky for CBS Masterworks; recital CDs of works by Beethoven, Schubert, Liszt and Chopin for Angel/EMI; and recordings featuring the concertos of Liszt, MacDowell, Tchaikovsky and Saint-Saëns on the Telarc label. He is included in the Great Pianists of the 20th Century series for Philips. A much-honored artist who has played before royalty and heads of government all over the world, André Watts received a 2011 National Medal of Arts, given by the President for recognition of outstanding contributions to the arts. In 2006, he was inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his professional debut, and he received the 1988 Avery Fisher Prize. At age 26, he was the youngest person to receive an Honorary Doctorate from Yale University, and he has since received numerous honors, including the University of Pennsylvania, Brandeis University, The Juilliard School and his alma mater, the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University.

BIOGRAPHY CONTINUED FROM PAGE 24 | OPENING NIGHT WITH ANDRÉS | SEPTEMBER 13 In addition to transcribing and arranging existing works for natural and valved instruments, she is increasingly active in commissioning new works for trumpet. She recently performed Songs of the Paradise Saloon by Bramwell Tovey in Toronto, and in 2014, she will premiere a new work by Qigang Chen in China and at the Proms. She is currently working with Guy Barker on a new symphonic work for 2015. Her world premiere performance of James MacMillan’s Seraph at the Wigmore Hall in 2011 became the title track of her release for EMI Classics. Sound the Trumpet includes works by Purcell and Handel with Trevor Pinnock and The English Concert on period

instruments. For her latest release, The Sound of Alison Balsom, she selected favorite recordings from past award-winning albums that include performances on both the natural and the modern trumpet. Alison Balsom studied trumpet at the Paris Conservatory, and with Håkan Hardenberger. She is now a fellow at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. She was a concerto finalist in the BBC Young Musician competition in 1998 and received the Feeling Musique Prize for quality of sound in the 2001 Maurice André International Trumpet Competition.

BACKSTAGE PASS

Long-time Houston Symphony musicians embark upon their retirement journey.

photos by eric arbiter

Thank you, Christine & Red Pastorek!

S

eptember 21, 2014, will be a bitter-sweet day for the Houston Symphony family as we bid bon voyage to two dear colleagues. The afternoon’s concert marks the final performances of both Christine and Red Pastorek before they embark upon the next phase of their lives in retirement. Having joined us in Fall

1969, Christine celebrates her 45-year anniversary with the Houston Symphony this season. Red celebrates his 50-year anniversary. Chris and Red have been integral members of the orchestra under the batons of seven Music Directors over the course of their Houston Symphony careers. Chris has also served as Orchestra Personnel Manager and Community Outreach Manager. Red served as Chairman of the Orchestra Committee in the 1970s and ’80s and was instrumental in negotiating numerous orchestra contracts. Beyond their professional contributions, though, their warm and fun-loving personalities have made the journey a joy for all of us! Please join us as we celebrate the musical careers of these fine musicians and wish them the very best as they venture out of Jones Hall, into the “real world” and on to a well-deserved and fulfilling retirement. Watch for them at Jones Hall in a seat near you!
