For decades, our musicians have celebrated our country’s freedom with a spectacular free concert and fireworks display at Miller Outdoor Theatre. This treasured tradition is one of the things that makes Houston such a special place as people from America’s most diverse city come together to celebrate our great nation.

This diversity also shines through in the fun and family-friendly programming of our Bank of America Summer Series at Jones Hall. We start with The Music of Queen, then pay tribute to Selena Quintanilla—the Queen of Tejano. The series ends “Under the Sea” with The Little Mermaid—Film with Live Orchestra in August. Continuing our tradition of thanking our generous and steadfast supporters, this year's Donor and Subscriber Appreciation Concert will feature harp virtuoso Rachel Lee Hall, Gold Medalist of the 2019 Ima Hogg Competition. The concert will take place July 10 and is free for Houston Symphony donors and subscribers. You can donate or subscribe today at houstonsymphony.org. The wizards and witches among you will also enjoy Harry Potter and the Order of the PhoenixTM in Concert, the fifth installment of our ongoing series of the beloved Harry PotterTM films with live orchestra. Sixty-six foot ceilings, scarlet carpet, teakwood, and travertine marble greet visitors to Jones Hall, the home of the Houston Symphony. Opened in 1966, Jones Hall has a uniquely designed movable ceiling that enables the auditorium to shrink or expand from approximately 2,150 to 2,900 seats.

For Classical concerts, if a work has several movements it is traditional to hold applause until the end of the last movement. If you are unsure when a piece ends, check the program or wait for the conductor to face the audience. If you feel truly inspired, however, do not be afraid to applaud! Brief applause between movements after an exceptional performance is always appreciated.

PRELUDE PRE-CONCERT CONVERSATIONS Led by Musical Ambassador Carlos Andrés Botero, Prelude Pre-Concert Conversations are held 45 minutes in advance of each Classical Series performance and provide interesting insights into composers and their works.

DEVICES Please silence all electronic devices before the performance. Photography and audio/video recordings of these performances are strictly prohibited.

FOOD & DRINK POLICY Encore Café offers a selection of food and drink options before performances and during intermission; we also have several bars located throughout the concert hall where you may purchase beer, wine, and mixed drinks. However, food or drinks are prohibited in the auditorium for Classical Series performances. Drinks (in plastic containers) are allowed for POPS concerts and some Symphony Specials.

CHILDREN Children ages 6 and up are welcome to all Classical, POPS, and Symphony Special concerts. Children of all ages are welcome at BBVA Compass Family Series performances. Children must have a ticket for all ticketed events.

LATE SEATING Each performance typically allows for late seating, which is scheduled in intervals and determined by the conductor. Our ushers and front of house manager will instruct you on when late seating is allowed.

TICKETS Subscribers to six or more Classical or POPS concerts, as well as BBVA Compass Family Subscribers, may exchange their tickets at no cost. Tickets to Symphony Specials or single ticket purchases are ineligible for exchange or refund. If you are unable to make a performance, your ticket may be donated prior to the concert for a tax-donation receipt. Donations and exchanges may be made in person , over the phone, or online.

OROZCO-ESTRADA MUSIC DIRECTOR

ROY AND LILLIE CULLEN CHAIR Andrés Orozco-Estrada has served as the Houston Symphony’s music director and as chief conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra since the 2014–15 season. He was appointed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra in September 2015 as its principal guest conductor. In the 2021–22 season, he becomes chief conductor of the Vienna Symphony. Andrés conducts many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, Staatskapelle Dresden, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, and Orchestre National de France, as well as major American orchestras in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Chicago. He has also led many successful concerts and opera performances at the Glyndebourne, Salzburg, and Styriarte festivals. Highlights of the 2018–19 season included his concert with the Vienna Philharmonic for Mozart Week and a new production of Rigoletto at the Berlin State Opera. He conducted his debut concert at the BBC Proms with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and led the Chamber Orchestra of Europe for the first time. As a guest, he returned to the Staatskapelle Dresden, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and The Philadelphia Orchestra. He and his Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra also performed Strauss’s Elektra in Frankfurt and Dortmund. In December, he led the Vienna Symphony with Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Andrés continues his commitment to young musicians, conducting a concert with the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic and leading a joint education project of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zürich with the Filarmónica Joven de Colombia, with whom he then tours. His record releases with Pentatone have attracted great attention. He was praised for his “beguiling recording” (Gramophone) of Stravinsky’s The Firebird and The Rite of Spring with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, and his recording of Richard Strauss’s An Alpine Symphony with the same orchestra earned him a reputation as “a fine Straussian” (Gramophone). With the Houston Symphony, he has recorded Dvořák’s last four symphonies, a “vital Dvořák with warm colors” (Pizzicato). In addition, he has recorded the complete symphonies of Brahms and Mendelssohn. Born in Medellín, Colombia, Andrés Orozco-Estrada began his musical education with the violin. He received his first conducting lessons at 15 and began studying in Vienna in 1997, where he entered the conducting class of Uroš Lajovic (a pupil of the legendary Hans Swarowsky) at the prestigious University of Music and Performing Arts. The Houston Symphony’s 2019–20 subscription season begins in the fall, but you can hear the orchestra this summer thanks to the return of Bank of America Summer Sounds at Jones Hall. The 2019 Summer Series includes seven performances that are sure to delight fans of classic rock, animated film, and Tejano music. On July 5 & 6, the Houston Symphony pays tribute to Freddie Mercury with The Music of Queen. July 12 & 13, see the world’s first-ever orchestral concert celebrating the life and music of one of the most beloved Mexican-American entertainers of the 20th century, Selena Quintanilla, with The Music of Selena. The final weekend of the Series features a Disney favorite, The Little Mermaid — Film with Live Orchestra, on August 31 & September 1. 2025 Implementation Fund

Vision 2025, the Houston Symphony’s 10-year Strategic Plan, describes our vision to be America’s most relevant and accessible top 10 orchestra by 2025. Since the plan was launched in 2015, the Houston Symphony has received generous contributions from hundreds of donors in support of the Vision 2025 Implementation Fund which surpassed $10 million in donations in the 2017–18 season. The fund includes support of specific initiatives that advance the goals of the Strategic Plan, such as: • The orchestra’s first multi-city European Tour in 20 years. • New and expanded education and community programming such as the industry-leading Community-Embedded Musicians initiative. • Commissioning and recording initiatives such as our cycle of late Dvořák symphonies, Music of the Americas; Haydn—The Creation; and Berg: Wozzeck, which recently earned the Houston Symphony’s first Grammy Award. YEARS UNDER THE SEA HOW BROADWAY AND A LITTLE MERMAID USHERED IN A MONUMENTAL DISNEY ERA

For many fans, the “Disney Renaissance” is a highpoint in the history of animated films. Covering a decade (1989–1999) of feature films, this “Renaissance” brought a Broadway-like feel to classic, well-known fairy tales, thanks in large part to lyricist Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken. Until Ashman’s untimely death in 1991, this dynamic duo would create many unforgettable songs for Disney; it was The Little Mermaid, however, that ushered in one of the most successful eras of Walt Disney Studios’ 96-year existence. With the help of the Broadway vocal talents featured in the film, Ashman and Menken created the memorable earworms that keep us singing along. A proverbial power ballad, “Part of Your World” is the “I want” song typically found in a Broadway show when the main character sings about his or her dissatisfaction and yearning for something more. Jodi Benson’s soprano vocals did exactly that in her portrayal of Princess Ariel as she longed for something beyond the sea. In addition to this 12 | Houston Symphony

powerful number, Ariel also vocalizes a wordless theme that frequently appears in Menken’s orchestral score, played by the flute and supported by the rippling chords of the harp— orchestrations that become especially vivid when played live. Benson’s brilliant performance made her Disney royalty and has kept her in the Disney family for decades, reprising the role of Ariel in subsequent sequels and making a cameo appearance in Enchanted. Samuel E. Wright’s portrayal of Sebastian the crab produced two Calypso-styled songs: “Kiss the Girl” and the Academy Award-winning “Under the Sea.” For these songs, Ashman and Menken were inspired by the characteristic rhythms and vocal harmonies of Afro-Caribbean music. While the original script called for a Jamaican accent for Sebastian’s character, Wright could not quite nail the accent and instead opted for a Trinidadian-Tobagonian accent in his audition—winning him the role.

René Auberjonois lent his high-range baritone vocals for the comic relief of “Les Poissons,” but perhaps the real gem of this film comes from the raspy, contralto voice of Pat Carroll, who portrayed the sea-witch Ursula. Her villainous anthem, “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” combines harsh low brass and wild woodwinds that shape her iconic theme and set the stage for other classic Disney villain songs in films to follow.

Rounding out the lyrical compositions, “Fathoms Below,” “Daughters of Triton,” and “Happy Ending” showcase the ensemble melodies typically found at the beginning, middle, and end of Broadway musicals. “Happy Ending” reprises the main title theme of the orchestral score. Steven Reineke has established himself as one of North America’s leading conductors of popular music. In addition to being principal pops conductor at the Houston Symphony, Steven is the music director of The New York Pops at Carnegie Hall, principal pops conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and principal pops conductor of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. He previously held the posts of principal pops conductor of the Long Beach and Modesto Symphony Orchestras and associate conductor of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. Steven is a frequent guest conductor with The Philadelphia Orchestra and has been on the podium with the Boston Pops Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at Ravinia. His extensive North American conducting appearances include Atlanta, Cincinnati, Edmonton, and San Francisco. On stage, Steven has created programs and collaborated with a range of leading artists from the worlds of hip hop, Broadway, television, and rock, including Common, Kendrick Lamar, Nas, Sutton Foster, Megan Hilty, Cheyenne Jackson, Wayne Brady, Peter Frampton, and Ben Folds, among others. In 2017, he was featured on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered leading the National Symphony Orchestra—in a first for the show’s 45-year history—performing live music excerpts between news segments. As the creator of more than 100 orchestral arrangements for the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, Steven’s work has been performed worldwide and can be heard on numerous Cincinnati Pops Orchestra recordings on the Telarc label. His symphonic works Celebration Fanfare, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and Casey at the Bat are performed frequently in North America, including performances by the New York Philharmonic and Los Angeles Philharmonic. His Sun Valley Festival Fanfare commemorated the Sun Valley Summer Symphony’s pavilion, and his Festival Te Deum and Swan’s Island Sojourn were debuted by the Cincinnati Symphony and Cincinnati Pops Orchestras. His numerous wind ensemble compositions are published by the C.L. Barnhouse Company and are performed by concert bands worldwide. A native of Ohio, Steven is a graduate of Miami University of Ohio, where he earned Bachelor of Music degrees with honors in both trumpet performance and music composition. He currently resides in New York City with his husband, Eric Gabbard.

Chelsea Cymone | vocalist Chelsea Cymone is a singer who possesses the rare ability to command the stage as a vocalist or featured artist. A Houston native, she has been singing since age 5 with a foundation deeply rooted in the Baptist Church. Her love for classical music developed during her time as a student at Houston’s High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA). HSPVA also nurtured her love for performing. After graduating, Chelsea attended Prairie View A&M University on scholarship with a concentration in operatic performance. She then began singing locally as a background vocalist, which led her to perform in Japan and South Africa as a background vocalist and featured artist. Chelsea made her debut as a featured soloist with the Houston Symphony in the 2018 POPS Season and has performed as the featured artist for Mayor Sylvester Turner’s Christmas and Thanksgiving parades. She has worked with several artists as vocal producer/arranger, including Tamar Davis of NBC’s The Voice, and as a background vocalist for Motown Gospel’s artist Gene Moore, Chanté Moore, Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child, Regina Belle, and Kenny Latimore. She works with Ernest Walker Entertainment to share her gifts on a corporate level for companies and foundations, such as The Barbara Bush Foundation. Chelsea Cymone sums up her life philosophy as “Make your passion your paycheck.” She works every day to do just that.

His TV work includes movies for major networks, commercials, sports music for ESPN, and cartoons. He worked with the Doobie Brothers and the Milwaukee Symphony, arranging and conducting the combined group for Harley Davidson’s 100th Anniversary Birthday Party Finale attended by more than 150,000 fans. In addition to the Houston Symphony, Brent has worked with some of the world's greatest orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic and BBC Symphony Orchestra in London; City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra; Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra; Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Atlanta, Baltimore, Dallas, and Forth Worth Symphony Orchestras; Minnesota Orchestra; Nashville Symphony; Buffalo Philharmonic, and countless others. Brody Dolyniuk | vocalist Brody Dolyniuk, is a gifted, self-taught musician who plays several instruments and has a particular knack for capturing the voices and mannerisms of classic characters from music, TV, and movies. His first professional gigs were at piano bars in several U.S. cities, where he learned to charm audiences and expand his musical repertoire. With a longing to perform the music of the many rock bands that inspired him, Brody assembled Yellow Brick Road (YBR), unquestionably Las Vegas’s most successful classic rock band. Since 1997, YBR has been reshaping the casino entertainment scene by bringing a rock concert atmosphere to showrooms previously reserved for Top40-style lounge acts. Along the way, Brody made numerous radio and TV appearances and earned a spot in the finals of two national singing competitions. He has also produced several large rock shows using multimedia, lasers, comedy, and special effects. In 2007, Brody lent his vocal talents to several tracks on the mega-hit video game Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. He has also provided vocals for the Konami game Rock Revolution.

Did you know? • Elgar was not the first composer to write a set of “Enigma” Variations. In 1825, the English composer Cipriani Potter wrote a set of “Enigma” Variations for piano "in the style of 5 eminent artists.” It is unlikely that Elgar had any inkling of this obscure work; if he had, he would certainly have changed the title of his own piece! This strange coincidence seems to be yet another enigma surrounding Elgar's masterpiece.

Robert Franz | conductor Robert Franz, acclaimed as a first-rate conductor and award-winning educator, is recognized as a creative force by critics, composers, and audiences of all ages. Composer Bright Sheng praised Robert for his “extremely musical and passionate approach towards music making,” and critics hail his “masterly pace, emphasis, and technical control.” In his 11th year as associate conductor of the Houston Symphony, Robert is a tireless ambassador for music education and continues to work toward the Symphony’s goal of serving more than 100,000 students by the year 2025. His steady progress has almost doubled attendance during his tenure. Last season, he was the first member of the Symphony’s conducting staff honored with the Raphael Fliegel Award for Visionary Leadership, in recognition of his success in advancing the Symphony’s educational and community engagement activities. Robert leads the orchestra in a broad range of creative education and family concerts, including its summer Neighborhood Concerts and an outreach program dedicated to bringing music to all Houston communities. Robert’s expressive and incisive style has placed him in increasing demand as a guest conductor with many renowned orchestras, including the Cleveland Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, St. Louis and Victoria Symphonies, and Italy’s Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina. ASCAP has recognized Robert on two occasions for his advocacy in arts education. Under his direction, both the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Louisville Orchestra were awarded the Leonard Bernstein Award for Educational Programming. The Louisville Orchestra’s award led to the creation of Creating Music and Stories, an educational program for Kentucky Educational Television. Robert’s expertise in music education was recognized by the Idaho Legislature when he was invited to speak about its importance to the education committee. He was also invited to speak at the League of American Orchestras conference on the topic of New Music: Opportunities to Broaden Audiences. In addition to his current post in Houston, Robert is music director of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra, Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival Orchestra, and founder/music director of the Idaho Orchestra Institute. Robert also served as music director of the Boise Philharmonic (2008–16) and the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra in Ohio (2003–10), resident conductor of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (2005–09), and associate conductor of the Louisville Orchestra (1997–2006). A winner of Astral Artists’ 2017 National Auditions, Rachel Lee Hall has appeared at Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, Cleveland’s Severance Hall, Blossom Music Center, and Lyon & Healy Hall. Rachel was winner of the 2013 Lyon & Healy Award, and has received top prizes from such competitions as the Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) Concerto Competition and the Saratoga Harp Colony “Play with the Pros” Competition. She is also the recipient of the Alice Chalifoux Award and was the 2015 CIM Presser Scholar. Rachel has been an orchestral harpist with The Cleveland Orchestra, the Akron Symphony Orchestra, the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, and a fellow with the National Repertory Orchestra. She has also appeared as soloist with members of The Philadelphia Orchestra, the National Repertory Orchestra, and the CIM Symphony Orchestra. Passionate about introducing the harp to new audiences, Rachel maintains a significant and ever-growing following on social media. She also maintains a private studio and serves on faculty at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia. Rachel holds both bachelor and master of music degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she studied harp performance under Yolanda Kondonassis.

Program NOTES Overture to Ein Sommernachtstraum (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Opus 21 Felix Mendelssohn (1809–1847)

Felix Mendelssohn was one of the greatest child prodigies of all time. The poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe had heard the young Mozart perform in the 1760s, but he declared that what Mendelssohn had accomplished at the same age bore “the same relation to the Mozart of that time, that the cultivated talk of a grown-up person does to the prattle of a child.” By the summer of 1826, the 17-year-old wunderkind was swept away by Schlegel’s classic translations of 28 | Houston Symphony

Shakespeare. “I can still see him entering my room with a heated expression, pacing up and down a few times,” recalled A. B. Marx, a music critic and friend of the Mendelssohn family. With adolescent enthusiasm, the composer exclaimed: “I have a terrific idea! What do you think of it? I want to write an overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” “A few days later he, the happy, free one, was back again with the score, complete up to the second part,” Marx continued. The opening was the one we know today, but the rest was “perfectly praiseworthy—only I could perceive no Midsummer Night’s Dream in it,” Marx complained. Upset, Mendelssohn “ran out without taking his leave,” but soon accepted his friend’s criticism. Within a month, the overture was complete more or less as we know it today. The overture begins with four elfin chords for woodwinds that transport us to the dreamworld of Shakespeare’s play. Fleet fairy music follows, leading to a brilliant transitional passage representing the court of Duke Theseus. A quieter, more lyrical melody then depicts the young lovers. The final theme we owe to Marx: “‘It’s too full! too much!’ [Mendelssohn] cried, when I wanted him to make room for the ruffians and even for Bottom’s ardent ass’s braying,” Marx explained. Despite the proliferation of themes already in the overture, Mendelssohn obliged with rustic drones and delightful hee-haws in the violins. The fairy music returns for a developmental passage that parallels the lovers’ night in the woods. The music gradually slows, dying away as they fall into an enchanted sleep. The main themes are then reprised, but in a different order: after the enchanting opening chords, the fairy music now leads straight into the lovers’ theme, perhaps reflecting their now happy pairings upon awakening. The braying theme of Bottom and his fellow actors leads back to the court of Theseus. Just as the overture seems to be coming to a brilliant conclusion, the fairy music returns, echoing the fairies’ blessing of Theseus’s house at the end of the play. The music slows for a dream-like reminiscence of the Theseus theme, and the overture ends just as it began. The Instruments: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, tuba, timpani, and strings.

Harp Concerto, Opus 25

Alberto Ginastera (1916-1983) Alberto Ginastera had a fascinating and eventful career; born in Argentina, he studied with Aaron Copland in the United States, clashed with the dictatorial politician Juan Perón on multiple occasions, and played a seminal role in the establishment of music education institutions in his home country. Dating from the height of his career, his Harp Concerto had an unusually protracted genesis; harpist Edna

Phillips, the first woman to join the Philadelphia Orchestra, commissioned the concerto in 1956, hoping she would perform it at the Inter-American Music Festival two years later. Ginastera, however, would not complete it until 1965, by which time Phillips had retired from public performance (the Spanish harpist Nicanor Zabaleta would premiere the work instead). Ginastera later described the concerto as “the most difficult work [he had] ever written” because the harp poses special challenges. Determined the piece should be a real, virtuoso concerto, he created a virtual compendium of harp techniques, including harmonics, pedal and fingernail glissandi, and percussive effects. The resulting piece is arguably the best work of its kind. The concerto begins with a dancing, high-energy theme in which the soloist vies with the orchestra. A mysterious transitional passage fades to a contrasting second theme, an introspective melody introduced by the harp alone. The sudden, percussive attack of the orchestra initiates an intense and varied developmental section before the first theme is reprised by a solo oboe. The tempo slows for the return of the second theme, which the soloist now plays with airy, distant harmonics, and the movement fades to a haunting ending. The slow second movement begins with a dark-hued, contrapuntal introduction for strings, which leads to a solo for the harp that recalls the sicilienne, a baroque dance with pastoral associations. A contrasting middle section features the uncanny sonorities of Bartókian night music. After a varied reprise of the strings’ introduction, the harp plays only a brief reminiscence of its sicilienne before the movement ends. The last two movements are linked by an extensive cadenza, a passage that features the soloist alone. After a dazzling array of magical sounds, the orchestra launches into the percussive finale. The harp leads a call-and-response dialogue with the orchestra that introduces the dancing main theme of the movement. This catchy tune alternates with increasingly exciting developmental episodes, building to a heart-pounding conclusion. By October 1898, Edward Elgar was 41 years old and through much struggle had built himself a reputation as a regional composer of choral music. Still, he was largely unrecognized by the larger musical world and had to rely on giving music lessons to earn his daily bread. Frustratingly,

he only seemed to receive commissions for light, occasional pieces rather than for the grand symphonies he yearned to compose. Despondent after a long day of teaching violin, he sat down at the piano one evening and began to improvise. Elgar later recalled, “suddenly my wife interrupted by saying: ‘Edward, that’s a good tune.’ I awoke from the dream: ‘Eh! tune, what tune!’ And she said, ‘Play it again, I like that tune.’ I played and strummed, and played, and then she exclaimed: ‘That’s the tune.’” Thinking of their friend Hew David Steuart-Powell, an amateur pianist, Elgar playfully varied the theme, imitating runs Powell would play to warm up at the piano, albeit “chromatic beyond H. D. S.-P.’s liking.” Soon, he began creating variations inspired by other friends, much to his wife Alice’s delight. What started as a lark would become Elgar’s “Enigma” Variations, his breakthrough masterpiece. The “Enigma” nickname stems from the presence of that word above the original theme in the composer’s manuscript score. What the “enigma” is has never been discovered, let alone its solution. Elgar dedicated the work “to my friends pictured within,” and in all, the original theme would be followed by 14 variations depicting Elgar’s wife, friends, a bulldog, and the composer himself. The friends were originally only identified by initials, nicknames, and music depictions, but this enigma, however, has long since been solved, as their identities are now well-known. Elgar once cryptically noted: “The Enigma I will not explain – its ‘dark saying’ must be left unguessed [...] through and over the whole set another and larger theme ‘goes,’ but is not played….” Many have since sought a tune that can be played simultaneously with the “Enigma” theme. A number of suggestions have been put forth, including “God Save the Queen,” “Auld Lang Syne,” and “Rule Britannia.” Elgar encouraged such speculation, but he rejected all proposed solutions. If there were indeed a hidden melody, he took the secret to his grave. Others have suggested that the enigma refers to a more abstract idea such as friendship, creative inspiration, or even Elgar himself. Fortunately, one does not need to know the solution to the enigma in order to enjoy the music, as the audience at the premiere thoroughly did on June 19, 1899. Andrés Franco | conductor Beginning his fourth season as music director of Tulsa’s Signature Symphony and associate conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Andrés Franco continues to delight audiences with his imaginative programming and energetic style. Highlights of the 2018–19 season include debuts with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Omaha Symphony, and Wheeling Symphony Orchestra, as well as a return engagement with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. A frequent guest conductor in the United States, Europe, and South America, Andrés has appeared with orchestras in Houston, Columbus, Fort Worth, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Boise, Oklahoma City, and Chicago. Worldwide, he has conducted the Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León/Spain, the Orquesta Sinaloa de las Artes/Mexico, the National Symphony Orchestra of Peru, as well as the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional, Bogotá Philharmonic, Medellín Philharmonic, and Orquesta Sinfónica EAFIT in Colombia. He has also appeared at the Cabrillo, Grant Park, OK Mozart, Oregon Bach, and Texas Music Festivals. A native of Colombia, Andrés is dedicated to preserving and performing the music of the Americas. As principal conductor of Caminos del Inka, he has led many performances of works by Latin American composers, such as Jimmy López, Diego Luzuriaga, and the famous Argentine composer, Astor Piazzolla. Andrés formerly served as music director of the Philharmonia of Greater Kansas City (2004–2010); as associate and resident conductor of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra (2009–2014); and as Leonard Slatkin’s assistant conductor during the 14th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition (2013). Born into a musical family, he began piano studies with his father, Jorge Franco. An accomplished pianist, he studied with Van Cliburn Gold Medalist José Feghali and attended piano workshops with Rudolph Buchbinder in Switzerland and Lev Naumov in France. He studied conducting with Marin Alsop, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, the late Kurt Masur, Gustav Meier, Helmut Rilling, Gerard Schwarz, and Leonard Slatkin. Andrés holds a bachelor’s degree in piano performance from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia, as well as Master of Music degrees in piano performance and conducting from Texas Christian University. He is married to Victoria Luperi, associate principal clarinetist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Isabel Marie Sánchez | vocalist Acclaimed vocalist Isabel Marie Sánchez was named Best New Female Artist at the 2017 Tejano Music Awards and Best New Artist at the 2017 Tejano Music Hall of Fame Awards. Her second album, Sígueme, was nominated for Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Female Vocalist at the Tejano Music Awards. Isabel Marie is signed to Q-Production/QZone Records, and currently works with Abraham Quintanilla (father of beloved Tejano music icon Selena Quintanilla). Her most recent album, XOXO, debuted at number nine on the iTunes Latin charts, and she was recently honored by a resolution from the Texas House of Representatives for her contributions to the arts, community service, and leadership in the Latino community. She is the youngest and first Tejano artist to have three songs in rotation at the same time listed in the top 20 for Tejano Gold Countdown, the nationally syndicated bilingual radio show. Isabel Marie has been featured on NBC La Voz Kids and was also a winner on Univision’s Sábado Gigante. Through her gift of music, Isabel Marie showcases her talent and the importance of music to Latino culture in the United States. Her spirit of community has already impacted the music scene, and she hopes to inspire young Latinas to dream big and strive for excellence.

HOUSTON HISPANIC LEADERSHIP COUNCIL The Houston Symphony’s Hispanic Leadership Council includes business, education, and community leaders who advise the Symphony about the communities we serve. Meet Anastasia Sukhopara, second violin

A native of St. Petersburg, Russia, Anastasia joined the Houston Symphony second violins in November 2017 having previously performed as a contracted substitute in the first violin section since the 2014–15 season. After moving to the United States at age 17, her musical career took a diversion into jazz and contemporary music. Realizing her passion for orchestral playing, Anastasia returned to classical training and earned full scholarships to the Boston Conservatory studying with Lynn Chang, Indiana University with Jaime Laredo, and Rice University with Kathleen Winkler. Anastasia has participated in numerous music festivals, including the Grand Teton Music Festival, Music Academy of the West, Sarasota Music Festival, Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme, and the New York String Orchestra. How did you choose your instrument? According to my parents, when I was about four, I started asking them to buy me a violin and saying I wanted to play. Apparently, I was not taken seriously as this went on for a few years. When I was six, my mom could not stand it anymore and took me to a violin shop. I wish I remembered how I got that idea in the first place, but I’m happy I did! What would you be if you weren't a musician? Although it’s hard to imagine not being a musician, I would probably become an immigration lawyer. Throughout a decade of living in the United States, I had to jump through many hoops to stay in this country and achieve permanent residency. I never had a lawyer to guide me through this process, but I learned a great deal. I believe everyone deserves straight-forward, qualified, and affordable help when it comes to such fundamental decisions. Do you have a favorite performance this month? What do you love most about our POPS Series and specials? I’m looking forward to the Harry Potter performances at the end of July. Playing soundtracks along with the film has been my favorite part of the POPS series. It is a much richer, deeply engrossing experience than simply renting a movie and watching it at home! As a musician, it’s interesting to get a glimpse into the mind of a film composer by seeing how the score and the movie fit together. Would you like to share a particularly memorable moment from your career? The Houston Symphony’s European tour last year was an unforgettable experience. Playing in fantastic cities and in some of the most prominent music halls, following the footsteps of incredible artists and ensembles who have performed there throughout history—it does not get much better than that! Also last year, I had the privilege of attending the Grand Teton Music Festival in Wyoming for the first time. Performing the Brahms piano trio there with my Houston Symphony colleagues, Chris French and Scott Holshouser, reminded me how much I love chamber music and how lucky we are to do what we do for a living!
