LETTER TO PATRONS August 2016
W
elcome to the annual Donor Appreciation issue of In Tune. Our sincere thanks and gratitude go to the generous donors who have contributed to the Symphony’s growth and achievements. This valuable support keeps the Houston Symphony on track to achieve its vision of becoming America’s most relevant and accessible top-ten orchestra by 2025. The Houston Symphony’s strategic plan, Vision 2025, which was approved by the Board of Trustees in 2014, lays forth a specific set of strategies and action steps in pursuit of our bold and unique vision. As we look back at the previous concert season and forward to the next in this issue (see pages 14-17), we also take the opportunity to update you on current progress in four key areas of the plan: Artistic Growth and Innovation; Education and Community; Reach, Profile and Audience Engagement; and Financial Sustainability. The 2015–16 season saw exciting activity in support of the first area—Artistic Growth and Innovation—under the leadership of Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada. The Symphony raised its profile by commissioning important works, including John Corigliano’s Stomp for Orchestra and James Horner’s Concerto for Four Horns. This activity will continue in the 2016–17 season, notably with the premiere of Composer-in-Residence Gabriela Lena Frank’s Requiem in May, which also includes commissioned text by Pulitzer Prize-winner Nilo Cruz. In addition, recordings for our new Dvořák series on the Pentatone label are complete, and recordings for forthcoming new releases, including a Music of the Americas CD, continue in 2016-17. The plan’s dedicated focus on Education and Community Initiatives resulted in the creation of our groundbreaking Community-Embedded Musician (CEM) program. The four talented CEMs who have joined the Symphony family have allowed us to quadruple the number of interactions we have with GreaterHouston’s students, including an impactful elementary residency program at Crespo Elementary School, supported by BBVA Compass. Additional initiatives that were launched in 2015–16 and will be further developed in 2016–17 include Music and Wellness, Social Services and High School Residency programs (see page 15).

Vision 2025 calls for the Symphony to expand its Reach, Profile and Audience Engagement. The new in-concert Behind the Scenes with Andrés video series, for example, draws audience members closer to the music, guest artists and composers, allowing the Symphony to make more meaningful and relevant connections with audiences. Outside of the concert hall, our new podcast series, On the Music, educates and entertains listeners, while our local broadcast TV specials expand the orchestra’s reach throughout Greater Houston. Vision 2025 speaks not only to the scope of programmatic ambition, but also to supporting this transformational growth through a strong and sustainable financial structure. Preliminary, unaudited FY16 figures indicate that the Symphony will conclude its sixth consecutive year with a balanced budget. We anticipate achieving growth in both earned and contributed revenues, with a projected overall revenue growth of seven percent over last year. Furthermore, our commitment to growing the Houston Symphony Endowment was evidenced in the 2015–16 season by endowment growth of $4.3 million and by pending planned gifts totaling more than $26 million from more than 147 Houston Symphony Legacy Society members. To directly support transformational initiatives connected to the strategic plan, the Houston Symphony’s Executive Committee has approved the formation of the Vision 2025 Implementation Fund. Achievement of the fund’s goal, $20 million over a five-year period, is key to the successful implementation of the strategic plan. The Houston Symphony recognizes and thanks the early adopters of the Vision 2025 Implementation Fund (see page 20), and we invite all members of the Symphony family and our neighbors in Houston to join this group of leaders to support a cultural transformation of importance and relevance to our great city. As the summer months wind down (even though the Houston heat lingers), we are excited for the season ahead, and we look forward to seeing you in Jones Hall next month.

Houston Symphony Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada began his tenure in the 2014–15 season. He immediately established a dynamic presence on the podium and a deep bond with the musicians of the orchestra. Andrés carefully curates his programs to feature engaging combinations of classical masterworks paired with the music of today, significant artistic collaborations with composers and guest artists, and innovative use of multimedia and visual effects, all in order to make meaningful connections with the audience. In the 2016–17 season, Andrés will continue to engage with audiences both with casual commentary from the stage and discussions with guests in “Behind the Scenes with Andrés” videos. On the recording front, Andrés and the Symphony will release the third disc in their critically acclaimed Dvořák Symphony series. Additional projects with Dutch recording label Pentatone are recordings of the Music of the Americas, which will include Gershwin’s An American in Paris and Revueltas’ Sensemayá; Rachmaninoff’s complete orchestral piano works with Denis Kozhukhin; and Haydn’s The Creation. Born in Medellín, Colombia, Andrés began his musical studies on the violin and started conducting at age 15. At 19, he entered the Vienna Music Academy, where he studied with Uroš Lajovic (pupil of the legendary Hans Swarowsky), and completed his degree with distinction conducting the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Musikverein. Andrés burst on the international scene with two substitutions with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra: the first, his debut in 2010, standing in for Esa-Pekka Salonen, and then in 2012, substituting for Riccardo Muti at the Musikverein. Orozco-Estrada now regularly appears with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic and Leipzig Gewandhaus orchestras, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Santa Cecilia Orchestra in Rome and the Orchestre National de France. Recent debuts have included the Philadelphia Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Oslo Philharmonic and the Israel Philharmonic in New York. In the summer of 2014, he also made his debut at Glyndebourne Festival Opera conducting Don Giovanni, which immediately led to an invitation to conduct La traviata in 2017. The 2016–17 season includes debuts with the San Francisco Symphony, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition to his post in Houston, Andrés is chief conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and principal guest conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. August 2016 | 7

n Saturday, June 4, Houston audiences were blown away by 25-year-old violinist Luke Hsu, who won first prize in the 41st annual Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Competition (The Grace Woodson Memorial Award) with his performance of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor. Luke also took home the Hermann Shoss Audience Choice Award and the Robert and Nancy Peiser Award for Artistic Encouragement. The Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Competition—a partnership between the Houston Symphony Leagues and the Houston Symphony— is one of the foremost instrumental competitions in the world and was named to honor the memory of Miss Ima Hogg, a co-founder of the Houston Symphony. This prestigious competition identifies outstanding young instrumentalists and supports their pursuit of careers in music-making. This year’s competition, chaired by Jo Dee Wright, featured three other finalists along with Luke: cellist Christine J. Lee, percussionist Samuel Chan and pianist Brian Lin.

2015-16 season Looking Back
Andrés’ Second Season as Music Director Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada’s second season with the Houston Symphony certainly delivered on the season’s theme of “A New Era. A New Sound.” Andrés carefully curated his programs to feature engaging combinations of classical masterworks paired with the music of today, significant artistic collaborations with composers and guest artists, and innovative use of multimedia and visual effects. He has also made several orchestral musician appointments during his tenure as music director and music director designate, a key element of his artistic vision to build a strong orchestra and elevate its artistic excellence. He continues to forge even deeper connections among composer, conductor, music and audience. In his inaugural season, he delighted audiences with impromptu comments from the podium. This season, On Stage Insights with Andrés formalized this concept, as he was joined on stage by performers providing anecdotes, observations and commentary during six special classical concerts at Jones Hall.
TOM SHEA
Andrés’ creative programming and inclusive style have also brought out larger audiences than in previous seasons. “I invite every Houstonian to experience a Symphony concert and allow their eyes and ears to see and hear the beautiful universe that is an orchestra,” he said at the start of the season. Indeed, Houston Symphony single-ticket sales have increased by nearly 18 percent over the previous season.
An Outstanding Year of Fundraising
A Record Year for POPS The 2015-16 BBVA Compass POPS series was the most successful season on record for single-ticket sales. Across the nine POPS concerts (not including the Very Merry POPS matinee), 17,610 single tickets were sold, beating the previous record of 16,388 tickets set in the 2007-08 season. Congratulations go to the orchestra, Principal POPS Conductor Michael Krajewski and Principal POPS Conductor Designate Steven Reineke for performing such high-quality, in-demand performances. 14
The five-year Sustainability Fund achieved its goal of $15 million by December 31. Forty-nine of the Symphony’s 65 Governing Directors, and 77 of 145 Trustees, contributed almost $5.3 million. More than 30 Houston Symphony orchestra and staff members also contributed.
WILSON PARISH
ANTHONY RATHBUN
Thanks to you, the Houston Symphony’s loyal donors, the 2015-16 season was an outstanding fundraising success. In total, nearly 5,000 individual, corporate, foundation and government donors helped the Symphony raise more than $16 million for the season’s activities, while achieving a sixth consecutive balanced budget.
The 2015–16 Opening Night Concert and Gala raised more than $800,000 for the Houston Symphony’s Education and Community programming. Left to right: David Wuthrich, Underwriting Chair; Margaret Alkek Williams, honoree; Vicki West, Honorary Chair; Janet F. Clark, Chair
Special Events included a record-setting Opening Night and Wine Dinner—and the most successful Symphony Ball since the Centennial. Among the many institutional donors that made a difference this season was BBVA Compass, which made possible an intensive yearlong Symphony residency at Crespo Elementary School. It was also a strong year for the Legacy Society, with 25 new members and more than $3.5 million in planned gift commitments.

new education and community initiatives
The Houston Symphony’s Education and Community Programming team launched several important and inspiring programs in the 2015–16 season.
Early Childhood Initiatives The Houston Symphony’s new Early Childhood Initiatives impact children during the most important cognitive developmental stages through collaborations with early childhood experts such as Prelude Music Foundation and the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation.
Music & Wellness
Residency at Crespo Elementary sponsored by BBVA Compass
As part of the Houston Symphony’s Music & Wellness initiative, The Symphony's partnership with Purple Songs Can Fly, a partner of the Periwinkle Arts In Medicine program at Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers, pairs musicians with patients and their siblings to help them express themselves by writing and recording songs.
The Houston Symphony partners with Houston Independent School District and presenting sponsor BBVA Compass to launch an in-depth residency at Crespo Elementary beginning in the 2015-2016 season. Through biweekly classroom visits and concert opportunities, the Houston Symphony residency deepens the level of music education provided to students.
High School Residencies Launched throughout Greater Houston in the 2015–16 season, the High School Residency program furthers band and orchestra students’ involvement in music that—over multiple interactions with the Symphony’s musicians—supports life skills such as creativity, collaboration, communication and problem-solving.
C Social Services With the launch of the Social Service Partnership Program, the Houston Symphony works with some of Houston’s finest social service agencies to help enrich the lives of the people they serve through the transformative power of music. August 2016 | 15
2016-17 season ANTHONY RATHBUN
Looking Forward
Engaging Innovations Next season includes exciting new and improved initiatives aimed at breaking down barriers and further deepening connections with audiences, including the new On the Music podcast series led by the Symphony’s Musical Ambassador Carlos Andrés Botero. This series offers concertgoers a deeper appreciation of the music through musical context and commentary on the score. On the Music episodes can be downloaded from houstonsymphony.org/onthemusic.
The Houston Symphony’s 2016–17 season, Andrés Orozco-Estrada’s third season as Music Director, celebrates more than a century of leadership in Houston’s cultural landscape. As his artistic bond with the orchestra deepens, so does his ability to develop and curate programs appreciated by audiences old and new.
Carlos Andrés Botero
Cultivating relationships with living composers remains a priority for Andrés in the upcoming season. The Symphony will celebrate John Adams’ 70th birthday in early 2017 with performances of the composer’s Doctor Atomic Symphony, a work inspired by Robert Oppenheimer and the Manhattan Project, and his Saxophone Concerto from the virtuoso who inspired it, Timothy McAllister. In April, the orchestra will perform The Red Violin Concerto, drawn from John Corigliano’s celebrated score to the iconic film. In May, Andrés, along with the Houston Symphony Chorus under the leadership of Betsy Cook Weber, will premiere Houston Symphony Composer-in-Residence Gabriela Lena Frank’s Requiem. This important commission will also include texts commissioned from Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Nilo Cruz. We’re especially excited the Symphony will feature the Houston Symphony Chorus in four of its classical programs in the coming season, three of which will be led by Andrés. In addition to Requiem, he will lead the Chorus and orchestra in Beethoven’s Fidelio and Haydn’s The Creation, a musical depiction of the Genesis creation story. Former Houston Symphony Music Directors Christoph Eschenbach and Hans Graf return to the Jones Hall Stage. 16
JEFF FITLOW
“As I embark on my third season as music director, I feel more confident than ever that this orchestra is reaching new artistic heights with an impressive 2016-17 season filled with a stellar group of guest artists, conductors and a wide range of exciting repertoire,” said Andrés. “The orchestra and I invite you to join our musical journey as we deepen our powerful partnership and share with you this magnificent world of symphonic music.”
JULIE SOEFER
Andrés’ Third Season as Music Director
Three of the 10 classical concerts led by Andrés this season will feature OnStage Insights with Andrés, a concept that was formalized in the 2015-16 season after he delighted audiences during his inaugural season with impromptu remarks from the podium. OnStage Insights Andrés Orozco-Estrada & Gabriela Lena Frank with Andrés features brief commentary and anecdotes about the music during select concerts at Jones Hall. Another key concert-enhancement element this season is the return of the Margaret Alkek Williams Sound + Vision series, which consists of six classical concerts that mix music with multimedia elements to enhance the concert experience. This season’s Sound + Vision series includes Haydn’s The Creation in September and October, A Mozart Thanksgiving on Thanksgiving weekend, Gershwin & Rachmaninoff in January, Mendelssohn & Petrouchka and Beethoven’s Fidelio—Opera in Concert in March and A New Requiem in May. The Margaret Alkek Williams Sound + Vision concerts are sponsored by Margaret Alkek Williams and supported in part by The Cullen Trust for the Performing Arts Endowed Fund for Creative Initiatives. Video enhancement of Houston Symphony concerts is made possible by the Albert & Ethel Herzstein Charitable Foundation.

POPS
BBVA Compass POPS After 17 exciting and progressive years at the helm of the BBVA Compass POPS Series, Principal POPS Conductor Michael Krajewski will step down from his position at the conclusion of the 2016-17 season. Succeeding Krajewski will be Principal POPS Conductor Designate Steven Reineke, a familiar face to Houston audiences and a popular conductor, composer and arranger in the POPS music scene. Steven is music director of The New York Pops, Principal POPS Conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra at The Kennedy Center and Principal POPS Conductor of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Both conductors will alternate as POPS conductors throughout Michael’s farewell season.
National Geographic Live Speaker Series New for the 2016-17 season, National Geographic Live is a four-event speaker series at Jones Hall that will bring audiences thought-provoking presentations from leading explorers, scientists and photographers. Each incredible program features compelling, lavishly illustrated presentations on some of the world’s most remote locations and perilous journeys. The series, held on select Tuesday evenings throughout the 2016-17 season, will document the world’s natural beauty through the lenses of Nat Geo wildlife and underwater photographers. Incredible stories from climbers and engineers will expand the audience’s knowledge of the world’s most precious natural assets. (The Houston Symphony will not appear.)
A collection of Krajewski’s best concerts with the Houston Symphony, the 2016-17 BBVA Compass POPS season will be brimming with Houston’s favorite guest artists and programs. A particular highlight is the return of Krajewski’s 2006 brainchild Cirque de la Symphonie, a show of brilliantly choreographed aerial and acrobatic acts that has captivated audiences around the world. Cirque de la Symphonie returns with a brand new program in which the stunning acts are set to film scores played by the orchestra. Featured Program | Donor Appreciation Concert | Program Biography
Thank you! Dear Houston Symphony Donor, The best way we can thank you is through music—and this Donor Appreciation Concert is for you, featuring music chosen by you, our loyal contributors. The Houston Symphony’s 2015-16 season was a triumph, thanks to nearly 5,000 donors like you. The orchestra, under the leadership of Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada and Principal POPS Conductor Mike Krajewski, reached new degrees of artistry while playing an astonishing variety of music. Our innovative education and community activities continued to grow, providing Houston Symphony experiences to more than 400,000 people. And we accomplished all this while achieving a balanced budget for the sixth consecutive year. Importantly, 2015-16 was also the first season of implementing our strategic plan, Vision 2025, with an eye on our goal of becoming America’s most relevant and accessible top-ten orchestra by 2025. We’re so grateful you’re a member of the Houston Symphony family. Please enjoy this performance in your honor. Gratefully, The musicians and staff of your Houston Symphony

Sustainability
FUND
The Houston Symphony pays special tribute to the 130 donors who made transformational gifts to complete the Sustainability Fund. On December 31, 2015, the Houston Symphony celebrated an extraordinary achievement: the completion of a five-year $15 million Sustainability Fund which has transformed the orchestra’s financial position. The Symphony was able to close out the campaign thanks to challenge grant funds totaling $1,050,000 provided by Bobby & Phoebe Tudor, Cora Sue & Harry Mach, Janice Barrow, Steve & Joella Mach and Robert & Jane Cizik. The Ciziks provided the final $500,000 to allow the Symphony to reach its $15 million Sustainability Fund goal.
The Houston Symphony pays special tribute to the donors who made a significant investment in our orchestra’s future, positioning the Symphony for success as we continue to pursue the ambitions outlined in our strategic plan, Vision 2025, to be an orchestra for all Houstonians, and to become America’s most relevant and accessible top-ten orchestra by 2025.
