HELLO LETTER TO PATRONS

AUGUST 2017

Every August, we like to take the opportunity to thank you, our donors. Ticket sales cover only a third of the Houston Symphony’s annual operating costs: the concerts, events, education and community activities we bring to Houston each year would not be possible without you. Thank you. In this issue of InTune, you’ll learn how you fit into a great tradition of patrons of the arts (page 12), and see how your dollars are helping to support new musical talent (page 10). Plus, you can get a glimpse of some of our upcoming events (page 18) as our musicians take a well-deserved break, and our staff prepares for the start of our exciting new season. September kicks off with our new Principal POPS Conductor Steven Reineke leading the first concert of our BBVA Compass POPS Series: Ella at 100, a celebration of the 100th birthday of Ella Fitzgerald, one of history’s greatest singers. The following weekend, our official Opening Night Concert and Gala features “America’s favorite mezzo” (Gramophone Magazine), the world-renowned opera star Susan Graham, who treats audiences to renditions of favorite French arias and Broadway show tunes with her lustrous voice.

On September 10, we celebrate our 25th annual Fiesta Sinfónica, a free concert of Latin American classics in honor of Hispanic Heritage month, before beginning our Classical Series with Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada, back in Houston after his Berlin Philharmonic debut. The Houston Symphony Chorus and director Betsy Cook Weber also return to Jones Hall with a work that won them accolades during their tour of the Czech Republic in June. You can get a preview of these and more of our 2017-18 Season concerts at the 24th Annual TransCanada Theater District Open House on August 27 with our free concert at 4pm at Jones Hall. Hope to see you there and at many concerts to come this season. Until then, thank you for your support, and may your days be full of music.

ANDRÉS OROZCO-ESTRADA

M U S I C D I R E C T O R ROY AND LILLIE CULLEN CHAIR

Houston Symphony Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada began his tenure in the 2014–15 season. He immediately established a dynamic presence on the podium and a deep bond with the musicians of the orchestra. Orozco-Estrada carefully curates his programs to feature engaging combinations of classical masterworks paired with the music of today, significant artistic collaborations with composers and guest artists, and innovative use of multimedia and visual effects, all in order to make meaningful connections with the audience. In the 2017–18 season, Andrés continues to engage with audiences both with casual commentary from the stage and discussions with guests in “Behind the Scenes with Andrés” videos. On the recording front, he and the Symphony released the third disc in their critically acclaimed series featuring Dvořák’s last four symphonies, his first commercial recording project with the orchestra. Andrés and the orchestra will soon release a Music of the Americas disc, featuring Gershwin’s An American in Paris, Revueltas’ Sensemayá, Piazzolla’s Tangazo and Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, recorded in early 2017. Additional projects with PENTATONE include Haydn’s The Creation. Born in Medellín, Colombia, Andrés began his musical studies on the violin and started conducting at age 15. At 19, he entered the renowned Vienna Music Academy, where he studied with Uroš Lajovic (pupil of the legendary Hans Swarowsky), and completed his degree with distinction conducting the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Musikverein. Andrés burst on the international scene with two substitutions with the Vienna Philharmonic: the first, his debut in 2010, standing in for Esa-Pekka Salonen, and then in 2012, substituting for Riccardo Muti at the Musikverein. Andrés now regularly appears with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic, the Santa Cecilia Orchestra in Rome, the Orchestre National de France, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. He recently debuted with the Philadelphia and Cleveland Orchestras; Chicago and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestras; and the San Francisco Symphony as well as the Berlin Philharmonic. Following a thrilling debut the previous year, summer 2016 marked his return to the Salzburg Festival with Nicolai's opera Il templario and—in place of Nikolaus Harnoncourt—Beethoven's Ninth with the Concentus Musicus Wien. In addition to his post in Houston, Andrés is chief conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and principal guest conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2016, Andrés and the Frankfurt Symphony Radio Orchestra released two recordings on PENTATONE to great acclaim: Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring and Richard Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben.

On Saturday, June 3, applause resounded after the last note of Nielsen’s Clarinet Concerto rang out in Rice University’s Stude Concert Hall. Soloist Joseph Morris had just given the performance that won First Prize and the $25,000 Grace Woodson Memorial Award at the 42nd annual Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Competition, chaired by Barbara McCelvey. Joseph wasn’t the only winner, however; other finalists included cellist Rainer Crosett, violinist I-Jung Huang and pianist Alan Woo. A partnership between the Houston Symphony Leagues and the Houston Symphony, the Ima Hogg Competition is one of the world’s foremost multi-instrument competitions. Named to honor the

Barbara and Pat McCelvey

memory of Miss Ima Hogg, a co-founder of the Houston Symphony, this prestigious competition identifies outstanding young instrumentalists and supports their careers in music. Joseph will return to Houston to participate in the newly named Hazel French Robertson Education and Community Residency, a weeklong immersive residency with Community-Embedded Musicians to help Ima Hogg Competition winners build their education and community engagement skills. The Houston Symphony recognizes The Honorable Peter Hoyt Brown, Anne Robertson Sellin, Charles James Robertson, III and Christopher James Brown for supporting this residency through the 2021-22 Season.

Thank you to our generous donors who helped us raise more than $360,000 for the 2017 Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Competition. Special thanks to underwriting chair, Vicki West. Usually composers get all the attention, but many famous pieces of classical music might never have been written without the support of enlightened benefactors. In this special edition of InTune, we’re shining a spotlight on a few of history’s most influential musical patrons.

Perhaps his greatest coup was helping to introduce Handel’s Messiah to Vienna. Handel’s influence can be readily heard in Haydn’s The Creation and Mozart’s Requiem. Many other works of the era might have sounded quiet different had it not been for Gottfried. In thanks for his support, Beethoven dedicated his First Symphony to van Swieten.

Baron Gottfried van Swieten

Hear Handel’s Messiah this December, plus our new recording of Haydn's The Creation (scheduled for release in March 2018).

• Lived 1733-1803 • Dutch/Austrian • Patron of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven The son of the Austrian court physician, Gottfried van Swieten excelled in school and had a particular gift for languages. He made use of these talents in the Austrian diplomatic service, eventually becoming ambassador to Prussia. While in Berlin, he discovered the music of Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach and his mostly forgotten father, Johann Sebastian. Gottfried developed a passion for Bach and other composers of the past at a time when music was usually played a few times and discarded. Determined to rescue this music from oblivion, he returned to Vienna and organized concerts that introduced this earlier music to composers like Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. Mozart wrote, “I go every Sunday at twelve o'clock to the Baron van Swieten, where nothing is played but Handel and Bach…” 12 | Houston Symphony

Nadezhda von Meck • Lived 1831-1894 • Russian • Patron of Tchaikovsky and Debussy When Nadezhda Frolovskaya married Karl von Meck, she was a rather intense 17-year-old piano student, and he was a poor engineer employed in the Russian imperial bureaucracy—but not for long. While bearing him 13 children, Nadezhda urged her husband to get in on the ground floor of the Russian railroad boom, which he did with remarkable success. Upon his death 28 years later, he left her a multi-millionaire at the helm of a vast business empire that she ably managed.

As a widow, Nadezhda became a reclusive eccentric, who only regularly ventured out of her estates to attend concerts of Moscow’s Russian Musical Society. There she fell in love with the music of a tall, handsome music professor: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Eager to give him more time to compose, she offered Tchaikovsky a stipend of 6,000 rubles per year—enough money for him to enjoy a luxurious lifestyle—on one condition: that they never meet. Her offer could not have come at a better time, as Tchaikovsky had just suffered a nervous breakdown as a result of the scandalous disaster that was his marriage. The composer readily accepted, and he dedicated his next major composition to her: his groundbreaking Symphony No. 4. She also employed a young Claude Debussy as her personal pianist for a time, but dismissed him when he expressed a desire to marry one of her daughters. Hear the symphony Tchaikovsky wrote for Nadezhda von Meck at Mozart & Tchaikovsky, January 25, 27 & 28. Jeanette Thurber • Lived 1850-1946 • American • Patron of Dvořák Born in Delhi, New York, Jeanette Meyers was the daughter of a Danish violinist. She herself studied music in Paris and later married Francis Thurber, who made a great fortune through his successful grocery business. Her passion for music inspired her to found the National Conservatory of Music of America in New York City in 1885. At her insistence, the Conservatory was a remarkably inclusive institution for its time; it was co-ed, racially integrated and accommodated students with disabilities. It also boasted many renowned faculty members, including the Czech composer Antonín Dvořák, who served as the conservatory’s director from 1892 to 1895. Mrs. Thurber poached Dvořák from the Prague Conservatory with an offer he couldn’t refuse: a salary 25 times greater than his previous one. While in the United States, the spirituals he heard sung by one of the conservatory’s African American students inspired Dvořák to compose some of his greatest masterpieces, including his Symphony No. 9, From the New World. Without Jeanette Thurber’s vision, Dvořák would never have written this concert-hall staple. Hear one of the works Jeanette Thurber commissioned from Dvořák when we perform his Te Deum at Mahler & Dvořák, September 14, 16 & 17, and don't miss the Houston Symphony's new recordings of Dvořák's Symphonies Nos. 6-9, available at the Symphony Store today! Thank you to all our donors! You keep alive the music these great patrons made possible and support the creation of new masterpieces by artists like our new Composer-in-Residence, Jimmy López. Hear the music you helped bring into the world when we present the world premiere of Aurora, López’ new Violin Concerto, in September.

Sustainability

FUND

The Houston Symphony pays special tribute to the 137 donors who made transformational gifts to complete the Sustainability Fund. On December 31, 2015, the Houston Symphony celebrated an extraordinary achievement: the completion of a five-year, $15 million Sustainability Fund, which has transformed the orchestra’s financial position. The Symphony was able to close out the campaign thanks to challenge grant funds totaling $1,050,000 provided by Bobby & Phoebe Tudor, Cora Sue & Harry Mach, Janice Barrow, Steve & Joella Mach and Robert & Jane Cizik. The Ciziks provided the final $500,000 to allow the Symphony to reach its $15 million Sustainability Fund goal. Houston Endowment Estate of Jean R.
