OROZCO-ESTRADA MUSIC DIRECTOR

ROY AND LILLIE CULLEN CHAIR Houston Symphony Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada began his tenure in the 2014–15 season. He immediately established a dynamic presence on the podium and a deep bond with the musicians of the orchestra. He carefully curates his programs to feature engaging combinations of classical masterworks paired with the music of today, significant artistic collaborations with composers and guest artists, and innovative use of multimedia and visual effects, all in order to make meaningful connections with the audience. In the 2017–18 season, Andrés continued to engage with audiences both with casual commentary from the stage and discussions with guests in “Behind the Scenes with Andrés” videos. Upon the commercial release of the critically acclaimed Dvořák series featuring the composer’s last four symphonies, he and the orchestra recently released a Haydn—The Creation recording in collaboration with the Houston Symphony Chorus and a Music of the Americas disc featuring Gershwin’s An American in Paris, Revueltas’ Sensemayá, Piazzolla’s Tangazo and Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. Born in Medellín, Colombia, Andrés began his musical studies on the violin and started conducting at age 15. At 19, he entered the renowned Vienna Music Academy, where he studied with Uroš Lajovic (pupil of the legendary Hans Swarowsky), and completed his degree with distinction conducting the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Musikverein. Andrés burst onto the international scene with two substitutions with the Vienna Philharmonic: the first, his debut in 2010, standing in for Esa-Pekka Salonen, and then in 2012, substituting for Riccardo Muti at the Musikverein. Andrés now regularly appears with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic, the Santa Cecilia Orchestra in Rome, the Orchestre National de France, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. His engagements for the 2017-18 season featured debuts at the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich and the Staatskapelle Dresden with two concerts at the Salzburg Easter Festival. As a guest, he performed once again with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and with the Vienna Philharmonic, which he led on a tour to Paris and Budapest. In June 2018, he toured Asia for two weeks with his Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his post in Houston, Andrés is chief conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and principal guest conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He was recently named chief conductor of the Vienna Symphony as of the 2021-2022 season.

Vision

2025 Implementation Fund

Vision 2025, the Houston Symphony’s ten-year Strategic Plan, describes our vision to be America’s most relevant and accessible top ten orchestra by 2025. Since the plan was launched in 2015, the Houston Symphony has received generous contributions from hundreds of donors in support of the Vision 2025 Implementation Fund which surpassed $10 million in donations in the 2017-18 season. The fund includes support of specific initiatives that advance the goals of the Strategic Plan, such as: • The orchestra’s first multi-city European Tour in 20 years. • New and expanded education and community programming like the industry-leading Community-Embedded Musicians initiative. • Commissioning and recording initiatives like our cycle of late Dvořák symphonies, Music of the Americas, Haydn's The Creation, and Berg: Wozzeck, which recently earned the Houston Symphony’s first Grammy Award®. In addition, in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, donors have also supported the Symphony’s Harvey Recovery Fund, allowing us to continue to work toward our vision during a challenging time. We are honored by their generous support. $1 MILLION OR MORE

LETTER TO AUGUST 2018

Welcome to the August issue of InTune magazine. We thought we’d take this opportunity to look back over the past year, which was one of trials and triumphs for the Houston Symphony. We’re proud of our artistic accomplishments and of our organizational resilience. I’m excited to share some of the year’s highlights with you in these pages. We started our 2017-18 season recovering from the unprecedented impact of Hurricane Harvey. Flooding in the Theater District forced the Symphony from its home in Jones Hall for seven weeks. Though I didn’t join the Symphony until April 2018, I was inspired to see news of the orchestra’s musicians going into the community, performing for Houstonians hit hard by the storm and giving free concerts at Rice University. Back at Jones Hall, the orchestra gave one superlative concert after another, including innovative presentations of Ives’ Third Symphony and Bartók’s Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta alongside some of the greatest symphonic repertoire, including Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7 and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, all conducted by our inspiring Music Director, Andrés Orozco-Estrada. The Symphony took the Dvořák and Shostakovich symphonies, along with Bernstein’s Serenade featuring violinist Hilary Hahn, on our first visit to continental Europe in two decades. It was an extraordinary success, with sold-out crowds showering the orchestra with standing ovations in some of Europe’s music capitals: Berlin, Vienna, Hamburg. The concert in Vienna will stand out in my memory as one of the best I’ve ever heard. I think it was an incredible occasion for everyone in the Konzerthaus that night—the audience (including several of you who made the trip from Houston), the orchestra and Andrés. Another great piece of news came our way at the end of January, when the Houston Symphony won its first Grammy Award® for our recording of Alban Berg’s opera, Wozzeck. Conducted by former Music Director Hans Graf in his final season, the recording captures the orchestra and a stellar cast in virtuoso form in one of the most challenging operas in the repertoire. As you’ll see in these pages, we did incredible things here at home this past year with our concerts, education programs and community engagement efforts. We reached audiences across the nation and around the world with our recordings, broadcasts and European tour. Our musicians and staff rose to the challenges of Harvey and reminded us of the power of music to offer solace and bring people together in the most difficult circumstances. It’s an honor for me to be here with all of them as the Houston Symphony’s new Executive Director/CEO. I look forward to sharing our music with you during the coming season, and I hope you enjoy this look back at the last season. None of it would be possible without you, our loyal audience, our devoted subscribers and our generous donors. Thank you.

ouston has weathered many storms, but Hurricane Harvey was unprecedented. Catastrophic flooding shut down our city for more than a week, and many areas are still struggling to return to normal. Houston’s Theater District was not exempt; our home, Jones Hall, was fortunately spared the worst of the flooding, although it still suffered significant damage. While the stage and auditorium were untouched, underground areas, including the courtyard level entrance and restrooms, administrative offices and the rehearsal room required repairs. In anticipation of the approaching storm, stagehands moved many expensive and irreplaceable instruments out of the basement before Harvey arrived; and the music library, relocated to the mezzanine level since Tropical Storm Allison in 2001, was untouched.

of playing at the George R. Brown Convention Center: “As we were finishing a performance, one of the volunteers asked us to come play for an evacuee who was blind and alone and had been unable to calm down for days since being brought to the shelter. Seeing her reaction to hearing a Mozart string quartet reminded me that music connects our hearts and minds in a way words never can.”

Nevertheless, with Jones Hall unusable, Harvey forced the cancellation of 18 concerts, including Opening Night, cutting significantly into both ticket sales and donations. It wasn’t just Jones Hall that sustained damage, however; 14 Houston Symphony musicians and staff were personally affected by the flooding. This didn’t stop them from jumping in to help our city cope.

storm just fine, so we really wanted to get out and help others,” she later reflected.

In the aftermath of the storm, more than 25 orchestra musicians came forward and offered to play at shelters throughout Houston. With the help from staff, they gave 20 performances over the course of nine days. A number of these musicians were affected by the storm themselves. In the words of Principal Cellist Brinton Smith, “In many cities, such extraordinary selflessness might make them unusual. In our city, it makes them typical.” Brinton described the experience

Musicians and staff were eager to help not only the community, but also each other. Joel James, the Houston Symphony’s Senior Human Resources Manager, quickly connected musicians and staff in need with others who wanted to help. Melanie O’Neill, the Houston Symphony’s Creative Specialist, joined other staff members at the home of Principal Trombonist Allen Barnhill, whose home was flooded. “We made it through the

The Houston Symphony’s generous donors also were eager to help musicians and staff affected by the flooding. In response, Houston Symphony Board President Janet F. Clark and the Executive Committee established an Employee Relief Fund. Thanks to the generosity of our community, it raised $109,000, providing invaluable support to Houston Symphony musicians and employees whose homes had been damaged. Once the waters began to subside, musicians were eager to bring orchestral music back to Houston as soon as they could. Our friends at Rice University and the University of Houston made that possible. We presented four different programs at the Shepherd School of Music and the Cullen Performance Hall in the weeks after Harvey, thanks in part to our musicians’ flexibility around scheduling.

Perhaps it was by divine intervention that Dvořák's Te Deum was programmed at the beginning of our Classical Series. The Houston Symphony Chorus joined Andrés and the orchestra in Stude Hall to express the music's sense of hope and resilience. Led by the Board of Trustees and senior staff, the Houston Symphony also took key steps to insure the organization’s financial stability, including recasting the Symphony’s Fiscal Year 2018 budget, reducing expenses by a total of $1 million; increasing revenue with new programming, including Harry Potter and the Chamber of SecretsTM—In Concert and implementing cost-saving measures in every department. Under the leadership of Board President Janet F. Clark, the development team established a Harvey Recovery Fund to offset projected revenue losses. Over the

course of the season, Houston Symphony donors generously contributed $3.6 million to Harvey Recovery, ensuring the organization could continue providing outstanding music as well as education and community programs. "Words are not large enough to describe how our Symphony Family pulled together," Janet said, "I was so impressed with every musician, staff, Board member, patron and friend. Collectively, we used our creative efforts to continue bringing the joy of music to our patrons and city." Throughout this season, we have been so thankful for you, our donors. Your support has helped us through this difficult time. As Brinton said, “There is nothing that makes us prouder than to be Houstonians—to be your musicians, playing for you in an orchestra built by, and for, the extraordinary, generous and compassionate people of Houston. Thank you.” —Calvin Dotsey

EUROPEAN TOUR I

n March, the Houston Symphony undertook its first major European tour in 20 years with triumphant concerts in Belgium, Poland, Austria and Germany. This monumental undertaking put our musicians to the test, as Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada explained: “We really accomplished what we wanted, where we saw and experienced the level the orchestra can play. When you sense that, I believe it's not only unforgettable emotionally and motivationally, but also technically. ”

It’s also where he had his first big breaks as a conductor, filling in for Esa-Pekka Salonen and Riccardo Muti with the Vienna Philharmonic at the Musikverien. During his time as the music director of Vienna’s Tonkünstler Orchestra, the city’s musical connoisseurs got to know his passionate music making well. “The musicians just wanted to do their absolute best in Vienna, so that the audience could see the wonderful work he’s done in Houston in the last four years,” John Mangum explained.

“It’s very intense music making, but at the same time it’s very rewarding,” said First Violin Rodica Gonzalez after performing in Berlin. “I loved the curtain calls. They just wouldn’t end!” Throughout the tour, normally reserved European audiences rose to their feet again and again after the Houston Symphony’s performances.

“Viennese people are very formal and honest people, and if they don’t care for the performance, they simply leave,” observed Principal Clarinet Mark Nuccio. “Fortunately, they loved it! They demanded an encore followed by at least six curtain calls for Andrés, who was brought to tears, which moved us all.”

The tour was filled with many special moments, including the Houston Symphony’s debut at the Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg’s new, state-of-the-art concert hall. For many, the highlight of the tour was the concert at Vienna’s prestigious Konzerthaus. Once the home of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms, the storied musical capital was where our Music Director, Andrés Orozco-Estrada, went to study conducting after leaving his hometown of Medellín, Colombia at 19.

Critics, too, were generous with their accolades. “No, they do not number amongst the classic ‘Big Five,’” wrote Ruhr Nachrichten, referring to the traditional grouping of the major American orchestras in New York, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland and Philadelphia. “But after the brilliant performance of the Houston Symphony on Sunday at the Philharmonie Essen, one might wonder, why not?” continued 

The Berliner Morgenpost observed that “A German orchestra would not play this music with such a brilliant sound and clear colors. Everything was precise, passionate.” Der Tagesspiegel noted the “enormous quality” of “the splendid orchestra,” ending its review with “Berlin calls Houston: ‘Please come back soon!’” “It’s been thrilling to see Europeans, who have some of the greatest orchestras in the world playing in these halls day-in, day-out, really embrace the Houston Symphony,” said John Mangum. Houstonians can look forward to sharing in the excitement now that the orchestra has returned home. “When you come back from a tour, you have this new, supercharged orchestra, and I think you’ll hear that in the performances,” John continued. “There’ll be an electricity they bring back with them that will infuse their performances in Houston.”

After a rollercoaster season that has included Hurricane Harvey, a Grammy Award® and the release of two new recordings, the success of this tour is more proof the Symphony is Houston Strong. This great achievement was made possible by more than 70 donors who generously contributed more than $1.76 million for the tour, including 12 who traveled to support and celebrate the Symphony in Berlin, Vienna and Hamburg. Our musicians contributed more than $100,000 through variances of their work rules that made the tour schedule possible, and our staff worked countless hours to support this colossal logistical undertaking. The Houston Symphony thanks all our supporters for making this milestone possible. In the words of Board President Janet F. It was the first nomination and win in the orchestra’s 104-year history. Hailed by Gramophone as “One of the finest Wozzecks on record, orchestrally speaking,” and by Fanfare as a “Terrifically imposing performance” under the direction of “An experienced and confident conductor,” the two-disc album features former music director Hans Graf (conductor/producer); recording engineer Brad Sayles (producer); Anne Schwanewilms and Roman Trekel (principal soloists); the Houston Symphony; and Chorus of Students and Alumni, Shepherd School Of Music, Rice University, and Houston Grand Opera Children’s Chorus.

“Büchner’s timeless, daring message of empathy and understanding along with Berg’s incredible music, emotional and precise, yielded perhaps the greatest opera of the 20th century,” Graf said. “The Houston Symphony’s performances show how it can be done in concert, staged lightly with great care and love—and with great impact.” Last October, the album was also awarded the distinguished ECHO Klassik Award for Best Opera Recording (20th/21st Century Opera). Recorded during concerts at Jones Hall in 2013 by Sayles, who now serves as the Houston Symphony’s recording engineer, the album was met with worldwide recognition upon its January 13, 2017, international release on the Naxos label. —Calvin Dotsey

The 2018 Wine Dinner and Collector’s Auction took place on January 26 at the Symphony’s performance home, Jones Hall. Thanks to Chairs Elizabeth and Alan Stein and Honorary Chair Beth Madison, it raised more than $570,000. Guests enjoyed a pre-dinner reception in the Jones Hall lobby, where they perused a silent auction that featured 130 fine wines, spirits and unique experiences; this auction, chaired by Bob Weiner, raised nearly $135,000. Also on offer were a Magnum Pull that sold 32 bottles of outstanding wine and champagne and the second annual 100 Point Wine Raffle, won by Maureen Higdon, who took home 12 bottles that have earned the highest rating from Robert Parker or Wine Spectator. After the reception, guests made their way to a dinner on the Jones Hall stage, which was transformed into a lavish wine cave by Richard A. Flowers of The Events Company. An elegant multi-course dinner by City Kitchen was complemented by wine selections by Lindy and John Rydman of Spec’s Wines, Spirits & Finer Foods. To accompany the gourmet experience, Houston Symphony violinists Sergei Galperin and Ferenc Illenyi, with Michael Gorman on double bass, entertained the 350 guests. —Martin Schleuse

Ima Hogg COMPETITION

O

n Saturday, June 2, applause resounded after the last note of Séjourné’s Concerto for Marimba rang out in Rice University’s Stude Concert Hall. Soloist Ji Su Jung had just given the performance that won First Prize and the $25,000 Grace Woodson Memorial Award at the 43rd annual Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Competition, chaired by Barbara McCelvey, with John N. Neighbors named as Honorary Chair. Ji Su Jung wasn’t the only winner, however; other finalists included violinist Hyun Jae Lim, cellist Alexander Hersh and violinist Michael Ferri. A partnership between the Houston Symphony Leagues and the Houston Symphony, the Ima Hogg Competition is one of the world’s foremost multiinstrument competitions. Named to honor the memory of Miss Ima Hogg, a co-founder of the Houston Symphony, the prestigious competition identifies outstanding young instrumentalists and supports their careers in music.

A new element of the Ima Hogg Competition, the Hazel French Robertson Education & Community Engagement Residency, was added in 2017 to help prizewinners build the skill sets of a 21st-century musician by gaining experience in education and community engagement. This past January, Joseph Morris, winner of the 2017 Ima Hogg Competition, became the first laureate to participate in the residency and use his impressive musical talent to address the diverse needs of nearly 200 Houstonians, including cancer patients, underserved elementary school students, aspiring young musicians and men struggling with addiction. We look forward to the wonderful work Ji Su Jung, the winner of the 2018 Ima Hogg Competition, will do in the coming year as part of her residency. —Julie Busch

The 2017-2018 Season proved to be another exciting year for our Houston Symphony League (HSL) and Houston Symphony League Bay Area (HSLBA). Led by HSL President Beth Wolff and HSLBA President Martha McWilliams, members helped make many Houston Symphony initiatives possible through their volunteer efforts and generous support. This season, League volunteers contributed their time and talents to ensure our young audiences had a wonderful time at the Symphony. HSL and HSLBA worked together to usher more than 37,000 students into Jones Hall for our 2017-18 Robbins Foundation Student Concerts. At Houston Symphony Family Concerts, volunteers created fun, themed craft activities and participated in the Instrument Petting Zoo, introducing children to various musical instruments. As team leaders at the 2017-18 Junior Patrons event, League members helped deepen the young Patrons’ understanding of music and rhythm. And through their hours of preparation and dedication (organizing luncheons, coordinating logistics and even arranging flowers), the Leagues contributed to yet another fantastic Ima Hogg Competition. We look forward to another wonderful season of League activities, led by Houston Symphony League President Maureen Higdon and Houston Symphony League Bay Area President Nina McGlashan. —Julie Busch

ANDRÉS vision Our 2017-18 Classical Series featured a stunning array of artists and concert elements, including Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada, our full orchestra, the Houston Symphony Chorus, worldrenowned soloists and the North American premiere of The Rite of Spring 3D, a groundbreaking multimedia project that combines music, dance and visual art. This season, Andrés continued to connect audiences with music in new ways while showcasing the Houston Symphony’s astounding music.

STRAVINSKY’S RITE REIMAGINED As the finale of the 2017-18 Classical Series, the Houston Symphony presented an innovative, 21st-century production of Stravinsky’s masterpiece, The Rite of Spring. Collaborating with artist and choreographer Klaus Obermaier and Ars Electronica Futurelab, Andrés and the orchestra brought this revolutionary ballet to life with music, dance and 3D animation. As dancer Yuka Oishi responded to Stravinsky’s wild music onstage, 3D animations based on her movements and the music appeared in real time on a giant screen suspended above the orchestra. Equipped with 3D glasses, attendees were totally immersed in this one-of-a-kind experience.

chorus PERFORMANCE A GERMAN REQUIEM

The 2017-18 Season began with Dvořák's Te Deum, which the Chorus sang to great acclaim in the Czech Republic in June. The piece took on new meaning in the hands of our own Music Director and orchestra at free concerts at Rice University, the Symphony's temporary home in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. Guest conductor Bramwell Tovey led powerful performances of Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms. Andrés completed our season with Brahms’ monumental A German Requiem and inspired the Chorus with his brilliant “well done” smiles. We look forward to works by Mahler, Dvořák, Orff and Rachmaninoff this season.

jimmy LÓPEZ LAGO DE LAGRIMAS

INVENTIVE PROGRAMMING This season was full of our music director’s exciting programming. Andrés continued to explore the symphonies of Charles Ives on a program that also juxtaposed Rachmaninoff’s well-loved Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with works based on the same theme by two other 20th-century composers: Lutosławski and Blacher. The orchestra also presented Lago de Lagrimas by composer-in-residence Jimmy López and Bartók’s Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta, which Andrés introduced with special onstage presentations. Our music director also brought his spirit of experimentation to bear on familiar classics with unique performances of A German Requiem and Variations on a Theme of Haydn by Brahms— the latter complete with a post-concert remix from a local DJ.

FABULOUS GUESTS

hilary HAHN BERNSTEIN'S SERENADE

Our Classical Series also featured some of the world’s most renowned soloists. In advance of our European Tour, violinist Hilary Hahn helped the orchestra celebrate Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday with a stunning performance of his Serenade, after Plato’s Symposium. James Ehnes gave a spellbinding interpretation of Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 and pianist Emanuel Ax transported listeners with the elegant perfection of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 27. A Houston favorite, soprano Nicole Heaston returned to sing the moving solo from Brahms’ A German Requiem. She returns next month to begin our 2018-19 Classical Series with Mahler’s epic Symphony No. 2, Resurrection.

STEVEN REINEKE’S INAUGURAL SEASON At the start of our 2017-18 BBVA Compass POPS Series, the Houston Symphony welcomed a new Principal POPS Conductor: the incredibly in-demand Steven Reineke. In addition to taking the helm in Houston, Steven is the music director of The New York Pops at Carnegie Hall, principal pops conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and principal pops conductor of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Steven’s inaugural season brought charismatic artists and spectacular presentations to Houston, including Broadway star Betsy Wolfe, Disney Fantasia—Film with Live Orchestra and vocal powerhouse Storm Large. Reflecting on the past year, Steven had this to say: “My first season as Principal POPS Conductor of the Houston Symphony was a wild ride. After a rocky start with Hurricane Harvey, I was amazed by the outpouring of support from the community that allowed us to get back on our feet making music and entertaining the people of Houston. From Broadway Today to One-Hit Wonders, we had some incredible concerts this season featuring unforgettable artists like my dear friends Jeremy Jordan, Megan Hilty and Chris Botti, to name a few. “I’ve enjoyed being able to spend more time in Houston meeting patrons and making new friends, and I’m very happy to be part of the Houston Symphony family. Thanks to all of you for your support of our orchestra—you make the music possible. I hope to see you all back at Jones Hall in September for Viva Las Vegas. On December 31, 2015, the Houston Symphony celebrated an extraordinary achievement: the completion of a five-year, $15 million Sustainability Fund, which has transformed the orchestra’s financial position. The Symphony was able to close out the campaign thanks to challenge grant funds totaling $1,050,000 provided by Bobby & Phoebe Tudor, Cora Sue & Harry Mach, Janice Barrow, Steve & Joella Mach and Robert & Jane Cizik. backstage PASS

SUMMER fun

During August, our musicians take a well-deserved break from Houston Symphony activities. While the Symphony may present fewer concerts during the summer, our musicians still find plenty of ways to keep busy by traveling the world to teach, learn and play with other musicians—sometimes they even find time for a vacation! Learn how a few of our musicians are making the most of their summers in this special edition of Backstage Pass.

William VerMeulen, Principal Horn I have the usual busy summer: 1. Solo performance and masterclasses with Fusión Filharmónica in Bogotá, Colombia (above) 2. Performer and faculty at the Sarasota Music Festival 3. Faculty at the National Orchestral Institute in College Park, Maryland 4. Performer at the Rockport Chamber Music Festival in Rockport, Massachusetts 5. Featured artist and teacher at the Teremiski Horn Camp in Poland (left) 6. Faculty at the Texas Music Festival right here in Houston 7. Principal Horn for the Sun Valley Summer Symphony in Sun Valley, Idaho. I always like to take my family along to enjoy the mountains. My wife also plays this festival— this is our 24th consecutive year in Sun Valley. Oh, and I managed to fit in a family reunion and a visit to my father!

Brinton Averil Smith Principal Cello This summer, I spend a week at the Sarasota Music Festival; a week playing concertos in Guanajuato, Mexico; 10 days at a festival in Silicon Valley; and then a month at the Aspen Music Festival (right). Finally, I take a quick trip to New Zealand for a cello festival. I'll be back just in time for opening night! 

Jeffrey Butler Cello

 On June 17, I had the honor of premiering a new cello concerto with the Clark College Orchestra in Vancouver, Washington. It was written for me by Maestro Donald Appert, an award-winning composer and conductor who is a multiple Honored Recipient of the American Prize in Music, and music director of the Oregon Sinfonietta, the Jewish Community Orchestra of Portland, and the Clark College Orchestra.
