HELLO LETTER TO PATRONS
DECEMBER 2016
Welcome to Jones Hall! On behalf of the entire Houston Symphony family, we are honored and privileged to be a part of your holiday celebrations. While it may not quite be a winter wonderland outside, our musicians, Chorus members and guest artists have plenty in store to warm your hearts with festive musical programs. Principal POPS Conductor Designate Steven Reineke kicks things off with the Symphony’s 16th annual Very Merry Pops concert, followed by the orchestra and members of the Chorus performing the heartwarming score to accompany Frank Capra’s Great American Christmas film, It’s a Wonderful Life. The capstone of our holiday season is Handel’s Messiah, the timeless classic that is a true Houston Symphony holiday tradition. The holiday season also prompts us to take stock of the Symphony’s commitment to education and community outreach. In October, the orchestra performed four concerts for 10,000 middle school music students. Prior to the concerts, nearly 1,500 students from 37 classes experienced pre-concert classroom musician visits by one of our talented and dedicated Community-Embedded Musicians. Further, 71 Houston Symphony musicians— more than 80 percent of the orchestra—have elected to participate in the voluntary Community Connections program this year, which is expected to result in more than 200 community interactions that include coaching sessions, performances or workshops for our High School Residencies, Elementary Mini-Residencies, Social Service programs and Music & Wellness initiatives. In addition, the Symphony is humbled to have recently been honored by Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star as its Community Partner of the Year. On December 13, the Symphony makes our annual visit to Houston Methodist Hospital for a free performance for health care practitioners, patients and hospital staff. This community performance is part of the Margaret Alkek Wiliams Crain Garden Performance Series. We thank Houston Methodist for being our official heath care provider. Looking ahead to the New Year, we are also excited to share the music of our orchestra outside of Jones Hall and across the globe. In late January and early February, our orchestra and Andrés will be recording, for commercial release, concerts that feature Gershwin’s An American in Paris, Revueltas’ Sensemayá, Piazzolla’s Tangazo and Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. Also in January 2017, the Houston Symphony’s performance of Alban Berg’s Wozzeck, conducted by Hans Graf, will be released on the Naxos label. Former Houston Symphony Music Director Graf conducted the performance near the end of his farewell season in 2013. Stop by the Symphony Store in the Jones Hall lobby before or after any Symphony performance to purchase Houston Symphony CDs, DVDs and other gifts. And as you enjoy the performances of our world-class orchestra this holiday season, please join our campaign to bring “Music to Your Ears” by making a gift in support of sheet music purchase and rental for our Houston Symphony musicians in the 2016-17 season. Our goal is to raise $150,000 in support of this effort by December 31. Keep your eyes out for more information on this exciting opportunity in the coming weeks. Enjoy today’s performance, and have a wonderful holiday season!

Houston Symphony Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada began his tenure in the 2014–15 season. He immediately established a dynamic presence on the podium and a deep bond with the musicians of the orchestra. Andrés carefully curates his programs to feature engaging combinations of classical masterworks paired with the music of today, significant artistic collaborations with composers and guest artists, and innovative use of multimedia and visual effects, all in order to make meaningful connections with the audience. In the 2016–17 season, Andrés will continue to engage with audiences both with casual commentary from the stage and discussions with guests in “Behind the Scenes with Andrés” videos. On the recording front, Andrés and the Symphony will release the third disc in their critically acclaimed Dvořák Symphony series. Additional projects with Dutch recording label Pentatone are recordings of the Music of the Americas, which will include Gershwin’s An American in Paris and Revueltas’ Sensemayá; Rachmaninoff’s complete orchestral piano works with Denis Kozhukhin; and Haydn’s The Creation. Born in Medellín, Colombia, Andrés began his musical studies on the violin and started conducting at age 15. At 19, he entered the Vienna Music Academy, where he studied with Uroš Lajovic (pupil of the legendary Hans Swarowsky), and completed his degree with distinction conducting the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Musikverein. Andrés burst on the international scene with two substitutions with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra: the first, his debut in 2010, standing in for Esa-Pekka Salonen, and then in 2012, substituting for Riccardo Muti at the Musikverein. Andrés now regularly appears with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic and Leipzig Gewandhaus orchestras, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Santa Cecilia Orchestra in Rome and the Orchestre National de France. Recent debuts have included the Philadelphia Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Oslo Philharmonic and the Israel Philharmonic in New York. In the summer of 2014, he also made his debut at Glyndebourne Festival Opera conducting Don Giovanni, which immediately led to an invitation to conduct La traviata in 2017. The 2016–17 season includes debuts with the San Francisco Symphony, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition to his post in Houston, Andrés is chief conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and principal guest conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Life Lessons with
Yo-YoMa Reflections on a visit with young musicians BY
14 | Houston Symphony
JOEL LUKS
In this essay, arts writer Joel Luks shares his reflections on Yo-Yo Ma’s visit to the Houston Symphony in December 2013, when the artist met with aspiring young musicians in the lobby of Jones Hall. Yo-Yo Ma returns to the Houston Symphony on February 4, 2017. If there’s one cliché that needs to be retired, it’s the assumption that great performers can’t teach, and that great teachers can’t perform. Wearing different hats both within and outside of performing arts and classical music throughout my life, I’ve discovered another viewpoint. Indeed, I suggest that to be a great performer, one must learn to be a great teacher. In my previous position as an arts journalist for CultureMap, I was invited to be a fly on the wall during a Houston Symphony rehearsal in December 2013. Cellist Yo-Yo Ma was the featured soloist in a program that included John Williams’ Cello Concerto. The composer also happened to be the guest conductor for the special concert. The trifecta of talent—a world-acclaimed performer, arguably the most recognized contemporary composer and the city’s premiere classical music ensemble—meant I couldn’t turn down the invite, and I changed my travel plans to experience art in the making. After all, it takes a lot of vulnerability for artists to open the doors to their process before they are ready for the public. I was expecting to take a few action photos and write a piece about the rehearsal and the dynamic between a soloist and composer who’ve been friends for many years. However, a few young music students, primarily aspiring cellists, were invited to meet with Yo-Yo Ma up-close and personal after the rehearsal. The interaction that ensued revealed Yo-Yo Ma’s penchant for inspiring others. He grabbed his cello and joined the youngsters in an honest discussion about the opportunities and challenges of living as performing artists. The impromptu and casual chat turned profound as master performer and pupils discussed issues about artistry and musicianship that aren’t readily apparent early in a performer’s career. "You don't perform because you want to show how good you are," he explained after a student from Cypress Woods High School inquired about coping with anxiety on stage. "You perform because you have something to share. When you feel nervous, it's because you feel judged. But if you concentrate on what you are communicating, if you work to get the meaning of something— that's better. That's making music." Yo-Yo Ma’s advice to these young musicians resonated with me on a profound level. Expand these views to a larger context, and they
speak to how we often live our lives in fear. Fear of failure and fear of judgement from our peers and family. And, at the same time, fear of not living authentic lives. For the high school students, Yo-Yo Ma morphed from an idol to a grounded individual who happened to play the cello. Nothing less, nothing more. He spoke of his teacher, Pablo Casals, with the same candor and quirkiness. “He was a short man with a bald head,” he quipped. At one point, Casals had been Yo-Yo Ma’s idol, too. Yo-Yo Ma had a soft-spoken way about him. Listening to and synthesizing his words of wisdom required the room to be absolutely silent and for the kids to lean in and pay attention to the nuances in his delivery. His non-verbal communication through music is animated and larger than life, so at first, his conversational style and personality surprised me. That’s until I made the connection: In both music and teaching, Yo-Yo Ma draws you in. Whipping up his cello from his case, Yo-Yo Ma serenaded the group with one of those unaccompanied etudes that defies reason, the technical dexterity required to execute them appearing as though it would never be required in an actual concert. The intimate setting, perfect for an unscripted moment, left all of us thinking, “Did that really happen?” Yes, it happened, and we were left with the impression that it often happens with him. Yo-Yo Ma returns to the Houston Symphony on February 4. While the Dvořák Cello Concerto he will perform requires substantial orchestral forces, much of the charm of the piece lies in its instrumental dialogues. Gorgeous flute solos, languid and bucolic horn melodies and luscious woodwind chorales speak a beautiful truth. For the second movement, you might want to bring tissues. Dvořák’s Concerto allows you to get as up-close and personal with Yo-Yo Ma as we did that day in 2013—as though you were sitting next to him. All you have to do is lean in, listen to what Yo-Yo Ma and Dvořák are communicating, and let them be your teachers. —Joel Luks is a Houston-based communications specialist and arts advocate. Joel earned degrees from the Eastman School of Music and Rice University, where he studied classical music performance. He enjoys writing about arts, entertainment, classical music and society. Joel is now a content strategist with boutique marketing and public relations firm The CKP Group.

Continued academic research has firmly established the linkage between arts education and academic achievement. (Visit ArtsAccessInitiative.org for a summary of research findings.) Important for Houston, arts education has the potential to bridge the achievement gap for low-income and lowperforming students by increasing engagement and decreasing truancy. As more jobs in Texas require a high-school education, it is crucial to find ways to equip marginalized students with the life and work skills necessary to lead fruitful lives and contribute to a sustainable economy.
the measurable impacts about the specific proposed arts program.
And herein lies the biggest challenge facing arts educators and our fellow Houston arts organizations: measuring the impact of our programs. The HAP conference’s featured speaker, Dr. Adele Diamond, demonstrated through her research that such scientific measurement is indeed achievable. Dr. Diamond is a neuroscientist whose research provides empirical evidence for the impacts of the arts on brain development and life-success. Dr. Anthony Indelicato, Assistant Superintendent at Fort Bend ISD, The sticking point for educators in schools and arts organizations is the lack of time, resources interacts with arts educators at the 2016 HAP Conference. and skill sets to conduct methodologically sound quantitative and qualitative research. Additionally, we need to learn how to talk about our impact in the language of school Attitudes and beliefs of educators and the public align with administrators, specifically illustrating how our programs support findings that participation in the arts is beneficial for our children’s the precise learning outcomes to which schools and districts are education and development. A study conducted by Young held accountable. Audiences of Houston, with support from Houston Endowment, revealed that 98 percent of teachers and principals agree the arts How can arts organizations begin to clear this hurdle? Educators and the public appear to “get it.” So the quandary is, why aren’t we seeing the arts increasingly incorporated in our schools? To help answer this question, Houston Arts Partners— a coalition of school districts and arts organizations, including the Houston Symphony—held its sixth annual HAP Conference in September. To initiate an important dialogue between arts educators and decision makers who have the power to influence school curriculum, the conference invited several high-level administrators from local school districts to participate in the discussions and workshops as district delegates.
to provide research opportunities for established or emerging scholars in the field, while also arming ourselves with the “language” we need to approach school district administrators on their terms.
Conducting such research is a formidable task and will take considerable time, effort and money. Even so, the Houston Symphony is committed to continuing and expanding our educational programs because we see the as-yetunmeasured impacts, and we are constantly moved by the anecdotal experiences of students who discover something new within themselves by working with our musicians during school visits or attending one of our concerts. We call on our fellow arts organizations to join us in redoubling efforts to measure and hone their message about the impact of their education programs.
Working in harmony, Houston’s arts organizations and school administrators can effect real change in our children’s future.
What we learned by bringing more than 1,000 arts education proponents and 10 school district delegates together was surprising. When asked about hurdles to incorporating the arts into school curricula, none of the district delegates mentioned funding challenges. Keynote speaker Eric Booth, recipient of the 2015 Arts Education Leadership Award from Americans for the Arts, moderated the discussions. Delegates revealed that, from their perspectives, the greatest barrier lies in how arts proponents approach, or “pitch,” arts programs to school administrators. District delegates stressed the need for hard, quantitative data demonstrating positive impacts. Anecdotal stories of children whose lives are positively impacted do not comprise sufficient arguments for the administrators, and while the broad benefits of arts education are well established, they want to learn of
Finally, we call upon school district administrators to keep open the flow of dialogue begun at the HAP Conference. The Houston ISD environment may be particularly supportive, given that Superintendent Richard Carranza is a former social studies and music teacher. Including the arts in our schools requires effort and understanding from arts educators and school administrators. We must continue to explore ways to measure the impacts of our programs, and school officials must also advocate for arts programs in order to provide the opportunity to assess real impacts. Working in harmony, Houston’s arts organizations and school administrators can effect real change in our children’s future. InTUNE — December 2016 | 17

Did you know? • Very Merry Pops, a Houston Symphony holiday tradition, is now in its 16th year. • According to the Guiness Book of World Records, the best-selling single of all time is the Bing Crosby-crooned version of Irving Berlin's Oscar-winning song, White Christmas, with 50 million copies sold. • The lyrics to O Holy Night are by French poet Placide Cappeau, who convinced his friend, composer Adolphe Adam, to set it to music. The song was premiered in Roquemaure in 1847 by opera singer Emily Laurey. • George Harrison was the only solo Beatle to never record a Christmas song.

Program BIOGRAPHIES Stephen Stubbs | conductor
Teresa Wakin | soprano
Stephen began his career as an opera director with Stefano Landi's La morte d'Orfeo at the 1987 Bruges Festival, which led to the founding of the ensemble Tragicomedia. Since 1997, he has co-directed the biannual Boston Early Music Festival opera and is the permanent artistic co-director. BEMF’s recordings of Conradi’s Ariadne and Lully’s Thésée and Psyché were nominated for Grammy awards. In 2008, he established Pacific MusicWorks in Seattle. The company's inaugural presentation was a revival of South African artist William Kentridge's acclaimed multimedia marionette staging of Claudio Monteverdi’s The Return of Ulysses in a coproduction with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. After a warmly received 2010 presentation of Monteverdi's monumental Vespers of 1610 at Seattle's St. James Cathedral, PMW presented a full subscription season, opening with a program based on the Song of Songs and ending with two triumphantly successful performances of Handel's early masterpiece, The Triumph of Time and Truth. As a guest conductor, Stephen has led performances of Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice and Handel's Giulio Cesare in Egitto in Bilbao, Spain, and Monteverdi's L’Orfeo at Amsterdam's Dutch National Opera. Following a successful debut conducting the Seattle Symphony, he subsequently conducted the Symphony’s performances of Messiah. After last season’s Messiah debut with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, he performed Bach’s Magnificat in Charleston; St. Matthew Passion in Denver, the Monteverdi Vespers in Los Angeles and Mozart’s Così fan tutte in Hawaii. Stephen Stubbs was born in Seattle, where he studied composition, piano and harpsichord at the University of Washington. In 1974, he moved to England to study lute and then to Amsterdam for further study. He soon became a mainstay of the burgeoning early-music movement there, working on Italian opera in Italy, French opera in France, and with various ensembles in England and Germany, particularly the Hilliard Ensemble. He returned to Seattle in 2006, and in 2013, he joined the University of Washington’s School of Music as senior artist in residence. He made his public debut at the UW in May 2014 as artistic director and conductor of a PMW and School of Music co-production of Handel’s Semele.

Handel's Messiah | Program Notes
Program NOTES Messiah
George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) As George Frideric Handel entered his 50s, his future was uncertain. Audiences in London, his home for more than 20 years, were turning their backs on the operas that had made him the toast of the town. The box-office slump left Handel with a pile of debts. Worse, two months after his 52nd birthday, a stroke paralyzed his right arm and affected his mind. But that wasn’t enough to stop him. Handel took off to a German spa, where his health mounted a comeback. Returning to London, he went right back to work. A fundraising concert helped pay his IOUs. And focusing on composing oratorios—choral works depicting biblical subjects— launched Handel on a new round of successes. The texts for some of the oratorios came from Charles Jennens, an English plutocrat and amateur biblical scholar. Jennens followed up with an idea of his own: a libretto celebrating Jesus’ meaning to humanity. Jennens sent the text, drawn from Bible verses, to Handel in hopes he would set it to music. An invitation to produce a concert series in Dublin, Ireland, got Handel moving. He wrote the music in about three weeks in late summer 1741, then scheduled the first performance for the following Easter in Dublin. As the date approached, anticipation ran so high that even Messiah’s final rehearsal played to a packed house. The audience at the premiere was enthralled. Legend has it that when the mezzosoprano soloist, whose personal life was scandalous, completed her most eloquent aria, a minister in the crowd cried out: “Woman, for this be all thy sins forgiven thee!” Messiah doesn’t mention Mary and Joseph, miraculous deeds, Judas or the cross. Handel and Jennens expect the audience to know about Jesus’ life. Instead, Messiah meditates and celebrates. Handel may have left the opera house behind, but he conveys emotions and crystallizes drama as vividly here as in his theatrical works. Part 1 centers on Jesus’ birth. Part of what makes Messiah so compelling is that it often speaks to the audience on a person-toperson level, and the lyricism and sweetness of the tenor soloist’s “Comfort ye, my people” establish that immediately. The tenor’s “Ev’ry valley” and the chorus’ “And the Glory of the Lord” introduce the exuberance that’s another of Messiah’s most compelling features. “Thus saith the Lord,” casting the bass soloist as the voice of God, is the first of several solos calling on the bass’ most commanding tones. The instrumental Pastoral Symphony is a gentle dance called the siciliana, a favorite Baroque symbol for the peace and freshness of the outdoors. Here, it transports us to the countryside for Messiah’s only storytelling sequence: The soprano soloist portrays an angel announcing to the shepherds that Jesus is born. In the soprano’s jubilant “Rejoice greatly,” vocal virtuosity’s excitement dovetails with the message. Handel returns to the siciliana’s lilt in “He shall feed his flock,” another aria whose melody reaches out to the audience like an embrace.
Part 2 explores Jesus’ sufferings at the hands of a misguided and violent world. The choir takes on a sober, introspective guise in “Behold the Lamb of God.” The countertenor’s “He was despised,” drawing the listener into Jesus’ loneliness, may be Messiah’s most soulful passage. In the midst of it, violence breaks out. The singer describes how Jesus “gave his back to the smiters,” and the orchestra’s relentless, jabbing chords conjure up his pain. The orchestra’s ferocity also propels “Surely He hath borne our griefs,” and the chorus’ full-throated power. In “Why do the nations so furiously rage together,” Messiah again unleashes the bass soloist’s thunder. But Part 2 closes with an anticipation of Jesus’ ultimate triumph: the buoyant “Hallelujah” Chorus. Part 3 looks to Judgment Day and the resurrection of the dead. “Since by man came death” gains its electricity from a stark contrast: The passages invoking death employ the unaccompanied chorus, whose hushed tones and eerie harmonies deliver the chill of mortality; in alternation with that, the chorus and orchestra hail the resurrection in vigorous, ringing phrases. To evoke the signal that will open the graves on Judgment Day, Handel marshals a trumpet alongside the bass in “The trumpet shall sound,” and the music’s vaulting lines set up both soloists to rattle the roof as best they can. The final solos savor the blessedness to come, then the chorus and orchestra take over. As they proceed from the grandeur of “Worthy is the lamb that was slain” to the exuberance of “Blessing and honour” to the fervent crescendo of “Amen,” Messiah concludes with reverence and exaltation. The Instruments:: 2 oboes, bassoon, 2 trumpets, timpani, harpsichord, organ and strings —Steven Brown

Sustainability
FUND
The Houston Symphony pays special tribute to the 137 donors who made transformational gifts to complete the Sustainability Fund. On December 31, 2015, the Houston Symphony celebrated an extraordinary achievement: the completion of a five-year, $15 million Sustainability Fund, which has transformed the orchestra’s financial position. The Symphony was able to close out the campaign thanks to challenge grant funds totaling $1,050,000 provided by Bobby & Phoebe Tudor, Cora Sue & Harry Mach, Janice Barrow, Steve & Joella Mach and Robert & Jane Cizik. The Ciziks provided the final $500,000 to allow the Symphony to reach its $15 million Sustainability Fund goal. Houston Endowment Estate of Jean R. Backstage PASS Meet Cris Bocanegra, Houston Symphony Chorus member Cris Bocanegra joined the Houston Symphony Chorus in 2015. Named after her paternal grandmother, Criselda Armila Bocanegra, she was born in Chicago and raised in McAllen, Texas. Shortly after she started school, her name was shortened to Cris. She studied music, voice and dance and earned a bachelor’s degree at Texas Christian University, and credits Dr. Arden Hopkin and Caro Carapetyan with pushing her beyond her fears and self-imposed limitations. She has been a member and soloist with the Scholar Cantorum of North Texas and a chorus member with the Fort Worth Opera where she served as artist-in-residence for a season. She has performed with the Opera Arlington and the Lemonade Opera Theatre of South Texas. Inspiration to audition with the Chorus: I made an effort to attend Houston Symphony performances in my first year in Houston. I knew I wanted to be a part of it some way, somehow. Knowing that Dr. Betsy Cook Weber directed the Chorus led me there. I had heard of her successes and work ethic. I missed singing—I feel empty when I don’t sing. Best moment: Every performance with the Chorus has been fantastic, but I have to admit, singing The Legend of Zelda program was so much fun! The audience’s participation and praise humbled me. A few of us exited the backstage door, and audience members surrounded us. I felt like a rock star, except I was dressed like a regular choir singer! Advice for potential Chorus auditioners: Respect the instrument you were born with. The human voice is a wondrous miracle and deserves care. Keep up your sight reading skills. Looking forward to this season: The Chorus’ trip to Prague has me giddy silly. I spent years raising my children and set aside performing. Living in Houston has allowed me to return to my deepest desire of performing. Houston experience: I moved here in 2006 when my psychologist recommended I find a large school district for my son who has Asperger syndrome. My son flourished in Clear Lake ISD, and I found a fabulous position and music faculty family with Pasadena ISD. I also found the Bay Area Chorus, then in a leap of faith, I auditioned

for the Houston Symphony Chorus. I’m so glad I did! Notable moments: My children, Spencer, Ali and Greg, are my most notable “moments.” I’m proud of the young adults they have become. They are the best part of me. All in the family: My father was a professional singer and played a beautiful guitar. I come from a large, close-knit family. We gathered every Sunday, and were always singing, as my uncles played guitars. It was part of our family culture. I performed commercials as I did my childhood chores. I knew I wanted to be a singer/dancer very young. Spencer and Ali are beautiful singers. My daughter is a singer/song writer and elementary music teacher in Austin.
Chorus
Around Houston: Houston’s performing arts scene is phenomenal. I attend as many Houston Grand Opera and Houston Ballet performances as possible. I’m also a cantor at the Villa de Matel Chapel and I guest solo at Houston churches. Between my school choir and the Houston Symphony Chorus, my life is pretty full.
Chorus Auditions
Current listening: Soundtracks by Thomas Newman, Rachel Portman, Dario Marianelli, Ennio Morricone and more. Their melodies are lingering and emotional. No wonder we love movies; these composers lure us in.
For more information about auditioning for the Houston Symphony Chorus, please contact the Chorus Manager at anna.diemer@houstonsymphony.org.
Inspirations: If I could, I’d like to sing more Mozart and Schubert. My voice feels at home with these composers.
