LETTER TO PATRONS July 2016

W

elcome to the Houston Symphony for the Bank of America Summer Series at Jones Hall. It’s an action-packed month of performances, as we first celebrate the 35th anniversary of Steven Spielberg’s Raiders of the Lost Ark by performing John Williams’ score along with the film on the big screen. The Men of Motown featuring Spectrum and Distant Worlds: music from FINAL FANTASY round out the series this month. A leading partner of the Symphony since 1993, Bank of America’s generosity in supporting these concerts continues its long tradition of service to Greater Houston. We also extend our admiration and congratulations to the 10 young musicians who competed in the 2016 Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Competition, chaired by Jo Dee Wright, on June 2-4. The competition is one of the foremost multi-instrument competitions in the world. On June 25, second-prize winner Christine J. Lee, cello, performed with the Houston Symphony at Miller Outdoor Theatre for one of our annual ExxonMobil Summer Symphony Nights. First-prize winner Luke Hsu, violin, joins the Houston Symphony this month at Jones Hall for a Symphony concert that caps off our 4th annual Day of Music. Don’t miss this free day-long event showcasing Houston’s diverse musical landscape on Saturday, July 9 from noon until 9:30pm. In addition to the Symphony concert, the Day of Music features musical groups from all over Houston representing rock, jazz, mariachi, salsa, blues/soul, world music and more. In this month’s issue of In Tune, we celebrate the work that our musicians do in our schools and communities. Read about one amazing student musician, Salvador Florez, impacted by our high school residency program on page 14, and about our ENGIE Community Connections program on page 12. Internationally, our musicians also continue to make an impact through our partnership with the Filarmónica Joven de Colombia (FJC; Colombian Youth Philharmonic). Earlier this summer, 11 Houston Symphony musicians traveled to Colombia, where they spent a week working with the talented young musicians of the FJC. Musicians included Chris Neal, violin; Joan DerHovsepian, viola; Chris French, cello; Robin Kesselman, bass; Jonathan Fischer, oboe; Matthew Roitstein, flute; Tom LeGrand, clarinet; Rian Craypo, bassoon; Rob Johnson, horn; Mark Hughes, trumpet; and Allen Barnhill, trombone. Houston Symphony musicians coached FJC players as they prepared for three concerts in Colombia as well as a video recording of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, all under the baton of Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada. The partnership with FJC is a special point of pride for the Houston Symphony. Finally, we are excited to share that this year’s annual Ball raised almost $1.5 million for our education and community programming. In the spirit of the theme, the 2016 Houston Symphony Ball, Carnaval, held on May 14 at Jones Hall and chaired by Jana and Scotty Arnoldy, was one of Houston’s most colorful. Samba dancers, dressed in vibrant costumes and headdresses greeted the nearly 600 guests on the red carpet into Jones Hall. Keep an eye out for the September issue of In Tune for a full recap of the evenings’ festivities and important fundraising success. Enjoy your summer, and we’ll see you back at Jones Hall in September for the launch of the Houston Symphony’s 2016-17 concert season!

Music Director

Andrés Orozco-Estrada MUSIC DIRECTOR

Houston Symphony Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada began his tenure in the 2014–15 season. He immediately established a dynamic presence on the podium and a deep bond with the musicians of the orchestra. Andrés carefully curates his programs to feature engaging combinations of classical masterworks paired with the music of today, significant artistic collaborations with composers and guest artists, and innovative use of multimedia and visual effects, all in order to make meaningful connections with the audience. A natural communicator, Andrés expands on this foundation in the 2016–17 season and engages even more with the audience in direct conversation about music. Among his new initiatives is “On-Stage Insights with Andrés,” which features casual commentary by Andrés and soloists from the stage. On the recording front, Andrés and the Symphony have recorded the last four great symphonies of Antonín Dvořák. Andrés has also spearheaded a cultural exchange and partnership with the Filarmónica Joven de Colombia. Born in Medellín, Colombia, Andrés began his musical studies on the violin and started conducting at age 15. At 19, he entered the Vienna Music Academy, where he studied with Uroš Lajovic (pupil of the legendary Hans Swarowsky), and completed his degree with distinction conducting the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Musikverein. Andrés burst on the international scene with two substitutions with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra: the first, his debut in 2010, standing in for Esa-Pekka Salonen, and then in 2012, substituting for Riccardo Muti at the Musikverein. He has worked with the most prominent European orchestras, most recently the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Orchestre National de France and Oslo Philharmonic. In addition to his post in Houston, Andrés is chief conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and principal guest conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. In the 2015–16 season, he made his official subscription series debut with the Vienna Philharmonic, as well as the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tonhalle-Orchestra Zurich, the Cleveland Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Connecting with the Community through Music Houston Symphony Musicians Volunteer through the ENGIE Community Connections Program The clarinet section of Cesar E. Chavez High School’s band faced a challenge. The more experienced players had graduated, leaving the section dominated by some of band’s youngest, greenest members. Thanks to the Houston Symphony, band director Stanford Lewis and his young clarinetists didn’t have to work alone. This past spring, members of the orchestra took time outside of rehearsals and concerts to visit the school, near William P. Hobby Airport, and coach members of its orchestra and band. Huddling with his fellow clarinetists, Christian Schubert went directly to their instrument’s foundation, helping them find the matchup of mouthpieces and reeds that suited them best. “That was probably the most dramatic improvement in a section we had,” Lewis recalls. After the session with Schubert, the players not only produced a fuller sound, but got a boost in confidence from hearing their own development. The payoff came in the next rehearsal. “Even when they were warming up, they had a whole different presence,” Lewis says. “The entire band could 12

tell. I said, ‘Do you all hear the clarinets?’ They said, ‘Yeah, they sound great!’” Thanks to the longtime support of ENGIE, formally known as GDF SUEZ, the students of Chavez High are benefiting from the Houston Symphony’s ENGIE Community Connections program. This initiative allows Schubert and his colleagues from the orchestra to fan out through the region to engage with residents who may never set foot in Jones Hall. The musicians demonstrate their instruments to children at community concerts, stroll through hospitals brightening patients’ days and perform miniconcerts for residents of senior centers—all free of charge. And Symphony members traverse the Greater Houston area working with public schools’ budding performers, many of whom could never afford a private teacher. Testimonies from band and orchestra directors sum up the results. Kerr High School cellists made strides in a series of four masterclasses with cellist James Denton. Orchestra students at

ENGIE Community Connections is a yearround volunteer program that makes the most of the Symphony’s greatest resource: its musicians. As soloists or members of trios, quartets or quintets, the orchestra members bring the joy of music to sites all over the city, including houses of worship, nursing homes, learning centers and homeless shelters.

Cypress Springs High School got a double dose with a chamber performance with violinist Marina Brubaker followed by a coaching session. Percussionist Mark Griffith energized the band at Sam Rayburn High in Pasadena. French horn player Brian Thomas helped Chavez High’s horn section soar in a piece that featured it. “In every case, after the symphony musicians come out here, the next time the students play, they have so much more confidence,” Chavez’s Lewis says. “They feel better about how they’re playing, so they play better. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.” The Houston Symphony also ensures these students have access to concerts by providing free tickets. Chavez High’s group, for instance, heard Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada and the orchestra perform Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique at Rice University. And when Principal Trumpet Mark Hughes, Principal Trombone Allen Barnhill and other musicians came out to Chavez, they sometimes put woodshedding aside and talked about their lives and experiences leading to their careers at the Houston Symphony. “When we go to hear them in the symphony concerts, that’s fantastic,” Lewis says. “But when you’re talking to them in a band rehearsal, the students learn they didn’t always play like they play now. The symphony members share the struggles they had when they were mastering their instruments. And they tell how much practice time they put in now as professional musicians. That’s one of the best things that comes out of this. The students realize these professional musicians started like them.”

In his first season as a member of the Houston Symphony’s French horn section, Ian Mayton coached the horns at Morton Ranch High School in Katy. Their top priority was a band arrangement of Igor Stravinsky’s kaleidoscopic Firebird Suite: “Really difficult material,” Mayton says. He arrived armed with technical tips he learned from his own teacher, the Houston Symphony’s William VerMeulen, Principal Horn. “I try to bring a positive energy,” Mayton says. “Especially with multiple kids, you have to bring some energy with you. They loved the music, so it was easy to dive right in and start helping them play better together. I went there four times. And over the course of that time, I really got to see them play better as a section and get a grip on the trickier parts of the piece.” Whether or not the students realized it, they were developing more than their musical skills as they worked on Stravinsky. By learning to evaluate what they hear, analyze what’s wrong and find what works, the ensemble learns how to collaborate and the young musicians individually cultivate discipline, mental focus and other skills that will keep paying dividends when they put their instruments down. That may be the Symphony musicians’ biggest contribution. “Attention to detail and really methodical problem-solving translate to a lot of different career paths,” Mayton says. “The way you practice is a way to increase productivity in anything you do. If a kid picks up something from that, and that’s how they do their homework or that’s how they approach training for a sport, it’s going to help.” July 2016 | 13

Saxophone Student Salvador Flores Flourishes through a Houston Symphony residency at Galena Park High School BY LORENA COZZARI

14

Salvador Flores, a talented saxophone student in the Galena Park High School band, has dreams that “are no longer limited to the borders of Texas,” according to GPHS Band Director Jessica Meng. “Salvador is one of the most talented young people I have encountered in all my years of teaching, and his work ethic is matched by few.” Approaching his final year in high school, Salvador has already achieved high accolades. For the past two years, he has been named first chair alto saxophone in the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) 5A All-State Band, distinguishing himself from thousands of the state’s young saxophonists. Over the last year, Salvador has developed a special connection with Houston Symphony Community-Embedded Musician (CEM) and double bassist David Connor. They met when Dave taught a masterclass on audition preparation for the GPHS band. Several students volunteered to play their TMEA All-State Band études. “I prepped Dave before the class and explained that most people are so impressed with Salvador’s playing they find it hard to challenge him,” Jessica says. “After Salvador performed his étude, Dave analyzed the performance and offered his advice, treating him just like the other students. Salvador was not used to being challenged at this level by such a musician.”

Feature Story | Saxophone Student Salvador Flores Flourishes

When the Houston Symphony’s CEMs and orchestra musicians work with high schools, we shift the conversation away from competitions and toward making music.

Galena Park is one of eight area high schools where the Houston Symphony has a residency. As a Title 1 school, it has at least a 40 percent low-income student population. Jessica’s classes are structured to address proper music fundamentals for all instruments. Since the beginning of the school year, her goal for the residency “was for students to gain confidence in themselves and their abilities to create and perform music at a high level. Overall, I wanted the students to immerse themselves in the idea that greatness can be derived from hard work and intelligent practice.

— David Connor

“Texas is a competition-driven state. Competitions are governed by the Texas University Interscholastic League and leave little room for us band directors to focus on the nuanced elements of music. Visits from Houston Symphony musicians are the perfect counterpoint to what can seem like a resultsdriven curriculum. They underscore the importance of music fundamentals as the basis of musicianship because they tie fundamentals to inspiration. In doing so, theory and practice become exhilarating to students like Salvador.” Dave supports this idea. “When the Houston Symphony’s CEMs and orchestra musicians work with high schools, we shift the conversation away from competitions and toward making music. When students start to see their instrument as a vehicle for self-expression, they start to understand the larger picture of the music. We empower them to expand their musical vision and see their instrumental technique as vocabulary that can be used to express their feelings, thought and ideas. inspires them to work harder than they ever have, because they can now imagine greater possibilities.” To this end, Jessica explains that “Salvador’s listening skills and awareness of nuance have improved, as well as his overall level of musicianship. Much of this can be attributed to the confidence Dave has helped instill in Salvador’s musical instincts. Salvador’s attention to detail and his passion for music have matured immensely.” Salvador says, “One of the most important lessons I learned from Dave was to have an open mind. As part of the band’s daily warm-up routine, we play choral symphonies to refresh our sense of musicality. Dave advised us on how to get the most out of a chorale by engaging our individual musical intentions. This sense of openness doesn’t just apply to music but to most things I do now, including my academics and personal life.

“With Dave’s and Ms. Meng’s guidance and support, all aspects of my musical skills have skyrocketed. Their constant support has given me the confidence and determination to follow through on all music, including music that challenges me.” Encouraged by Dave and Jessica, Salvador is attending a summer program at the prestigious Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan on a merit scholarship, offered only to the top two players of each instrument. He plans to pursue a degree in music performance at Northwestern University in Illinois and a career as an orchestral soloist and college professor. Program NOTES A Note from the Composer In creating the character Indiana Jones, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg introduced an enduring and much loved figure into the pantheon of fictional movie heroes. Raiders of the Lost Ark was illuminated by the superb comedy-action performance of Harrison Ford and enlivened by the spirited direction of Steven Spielberg.

Raiders of the Lost Ark – Film with Orchestra produced by Film Concerts Live!, a joint venture of IMG Artists, LLC and The Gorfaine/Schwartz Agency, Inc. Producers: Steven A. Linder and Jamie Richardson Production Coordinator: Rob Stogsdill Worldwide Representation: IMG Artists, LLC Technical Director: Mike Runice

Speaking for myself, I must say that the experience of composing the music for this film, and for the subsequent installments in the series, was a very happy one, and offered me a wild and truly joyous ride. I’m especially delighted that the magnificent Houston Symphony has agreed to perform the music this evening in a live presentation of the movie.

Music Composed by John Williams

I know I speak for everyone connected with the making of the Raiders in saying that we are greatly honored by this event… and I hope that tonight’s audience will experience some measure of the joy and fun we did when making the film nearly 35 years ago.

Spectrum

Webster defines Spectrum as a “series of radiations arranged in regular order” or a “continuous sequence or wide range.” There could not be a more appropriate description of Spectrum, the award-winning group that draws upon the talent of four radiant voices and diverse personalities to form a first-class vocal quartet. After spending six stellar years recreating the sound and style of the Four Tops in Las Vegas’ multi-million dollar production shows, American Superstars and Legends in Concert, the group has developed the versatility to cover the music of groups from the Platters to the Temptations to Boyz 2 Men. This versatility has propelled the singers to the status of headlining their own shows in which they perform stirring renditions of the best cover tunes. In addition to regular corporate and private parties, Spectrum’s credits include European and Australian tours, hundreds of headlining performances aboard leading cruise ships, a Doo-Wop to Soul Review at the Hollywood Palladium, as well as more than 100 26

As a sought-after guest conductor, Chelsea has appeared with many major orchestras, including the Houston, San Antonio and Nashville Symphonies; Cleveland Orchestra; Chicago, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Indianapolis and New Jersey Symphony Orchestras; Brooklyn, Rochester and Louisiana Philharmonics; Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana (Palermo) and Dohnanyi Orchestra (Budapest), among others. Last season, he performed with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and the Beaumont Interfaith Choral Society. He continued his work in a newly expanded season with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, and he debuted at the Prague Spring International Music Festival, conducting the acclaimed Dianne Reeves. During summer 2011, Chelsea Tipton was part of an extensive European tour with pop artist Sting that took him to 15 countries, working with 19 orchestras. He prepared the orchestras for the concerts and performed with Sting in concert in the Canary Islands, Granada and Spain.

performances with orchestras throughout North America. Voted Best of Las Vegas in 2005 and 2006, Spectrum’s award-winning show ran four years on the Las Vegas Strip, ending only when the property that housed it closed its doors. In 2009, the group received the Vegas Entertainment Consumer’s Living Legends Award for Excellence in Entertainment. In 2012, it joined the ranks of legends Wayne Newton, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Liberace, Rich Little, Siegfried and Roy, Elvis and others when it was awarded the 68th Star on Las Vegas’ Walk of Fame. Spectrum’s credentials, collectively and individually, include starring in six major production shows, on the Las Vegas Strip and internationally; appearances on numerous television shows as special guests, including the Today Show; featured appearances in motion pictures; starring roles in equity theater; special appearances at professional sporting events; performing or recording with or opening for artists as varied as Tony Bennett, the Temptations, Blue Magic, Little Richard, the late Marty Robbins, the Platters, Frankie Lymon’s Teenagers, Doc Severenson and Fat Larry’s Band, to name a few. The group boasts four incredible singers, each with the voice of a solo artist, who combine their voices and dexterity to create the angelic harmonies and deft choreography that have become Spectrum’s trademark. The members include E.C. Adams; Chicago-born musician and versatile entertainer Pierre Jovan; David Prescott, the silky-smooth, soaring-voiced first tenor from Rochester; and singer, actor and group founder Cushney Roberts, from East Orange, New Jersey, who left the life of a Princeton-educated corporate engineer and cut his teeth in casino lounges in route to becoming a well-respected entertainer. These well-mannered, college-educated, world-traveled entertainment veterans will certainly entertain you!

2016 –17

Program NOTES Motown Well into the 1950s, music recordings by American black artists were classified as “race” records and were typically forbidden or severely restricted from radio airplay on “white” stations. Many of the songs were rerecorded, or covered, by white artists who often prospered from broader airplay and sales while the original artists struggled. Perhaps most notably, songs by Fats Domino and Little Richard were covered by Pat Boone (“Ain’t That a Shame,” “Tutti Frutti” and “Long Tall Sally”); Big Momma Thornton’s “Hound Dog” was covered by Elvis Presley; and the Beatles covered Chuck Berry, the Marvelettes and Little Richard with “Roll Over Beethoven,” “Please Mr. Postman” and “Long Tall Sally,” respectively. Since airwaves cannot be controlled, white audiences first heard these “forbidden” tunes on black-oriented radio programs. The demand grew, and white-oriented stations were pressured into playing recordings by the black artists. The “crossovers” moved into an arena where a larger, more lucrative audience awaited. Paralleling the era of segregation in the 1950s and ’60s, Berry Gordy founded Motown Records, named for Detroit: Motor City. He envisioned a style and presentation of music that would capture the attention of all of America’s youth. By tapping into a deep pool of talented young performers, writers, musicians and producers, he mined great songs and presented them to an eager public. Groomed at Motown’s finishing school, well-mannered young black performers thrilled audiences with their flashy, yet classy, costumes and exquisite choreography. Once on the airwaves, the music took root, and the cornerstone of the soundtrack of the 1960s and ’70s Vietnam and Civil Rights era found its place in American history. The Motown sound shared top rankings on the American pop charts with America’s British Invasion, while it made its mark on Britain and beyond. Gordy’s acts made regular appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show and numerous TV specials. An American institution and unique musical and entrepreneurial phenomenon, Motown stands as a shining example of a merger of American ingenuity and talent. — Cushney Roberts, Spectrum

It also won Song of the Year (Western Music) at the 14th Annual Japan Gold Disc Awards in 1999, which was the first time in history that music from a video game had attained this illustrious honor. Program NOTES Distant Worlds: music from FINAL FANTASY

AWR Music Productions, LLC is proud to present the official symphony concert world-tour Distant Worlds: music from FINAL FANTASY. Launched in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of Final Fantasy, this concert tour features the music of Japanese video game composer Nobuo Uematsu and is conducted by Grammy award-winner Arnie Roth. This multimedia experience combines stirring screen images to match the soaring emotions of a symphony orchestra performing music from SQUARE ENIX’S world-renowned FINAL FANTASY video game series.

History

After the success of the 2002 FINAL FANTASY concert held in Japan, Square Enix announced a six-city, seven-show tour of Japan in 2004 entitled “Tour de Japon: music from FINAL FANTASY.” The first stateside concert, “Dear Friends: music from FINAL FANTASY,” followed on May 10, 2004, at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and sold out in three days. It featured music from Square Enix’s world-renowned FINAL FANTASY video game series, performed by the acclaimed Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Master Chorale. The positive reception of this performance gave rise to the 2005 U.S. concert tour “Dear Friends: music from FINAL FANTASY.” Uematsu’s awardwinning music was then featured in “More Friends: music from FINAL FANTASY” in Los Angeles at the Universal Amphitheatre. Later that year, the “VOICES: music from FINAL FANTASY” concert took place in Tokyo with the Tokyo Philharmonic under the direction of Music Director Arnie Roth. Video game music has grown increasingly popular in the last few years. Music plays an integral role in today’s games, enhancing the players’ overall experience. While still a growing market, video game soundtracks are now sold in major outlets and include a variety of genres such as rock, hip-hop, electronica, classical compositions and songs performed by popular artists. The FINAL FANTASY soundtracks, which are original compositions, have grown so popular that Time magazine named series composer Nobuo Uematsu a notable “Innovator” in its recent “Time 100: the Next Wave Music” feature. Square Enix hopes to pioneer awareness and appreciation of not only its own musical creations, but also video game music throughout the industry.

Sustainability

FUND

The Houston Symphony pays special tribute to the 130 donors who made transformational gifts to complete the Sustainability Fund. On December 31, 2015, the Houston Symphony celebrated an extraordinary achievement: the completion of a five-year $15 million Sustainability Fund which has transformed the orchestra’s financial position. The Symphony was able to close out the campaign thanks to challenge grant funds totaling $1,050,000 provided by Bobby & Phoebe Tudor, Cora Sue & Harry Mach, Janice Barrow, Steve & Joella Mach and Robert & Jane Cizik. The Ciziks provided the final $500,000 to allow the Symphony to reach its $15 million Sustainability Fund goal.

The Houston Symphony pays special tribute to the donors who made a significant investment in our orchestra’s future, positioning the Symphony for success as we continue to pursue the ambitions outlined in our strategic plan, Vision 2025, to be an orchestra for all Houstonians, and to become America’s most relevant and accessible top-ten orchestra by 2025.

Backstage PASS Meet our musicians... John Parker, associate principal trumpet John Parker, a native of High Point, North Carolina, joined the Houston Symphony in May 2016 as Associate Principal Trumpet. He was previously Principal Trumpet with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, a position he accepted after undergraduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was a recipient of the Kenan Music Scholarship and the Frank R. Comfort Education Scholarship. John has performed as Principal Trumpet of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra and the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra. He attended the Aspen Music Festival and School on full fellowship in 2012 and 2013 and has twice performed as a soloist at the National Trumpet Competition. The Houston art scene: Houston’s arts scene is beyond incredible. Growing up in North Carolina, I had access to great symphonies and performing artists, but it was nothing compared to Houston. In my opinion, a city’s art is only as strong as its presence in the community. The Houston Symphony, and other groups, appeal to diverse audiences. The enthusiasm of Houston audiences is unparalleled. In the first week of June, we did an all-John Williams show, and I’ve never experienced a more engaged and excited audience. When we have the audience’s support, we perform even better. Outside Jones Hall: I love food! If you run into me outside of Jones Hall, it will probably be in a restaurant. I’m just now getting a feel for the amazing food in Houston, and there is definitely not a shortage. I especially love sushi and BBQ. I also enjoy playing golf and practicing piano when I can. Inspiration to become a musician: My earliest influences were my parents and brother, all of whom are musicians. My mom taught middle school band for 30 years and plays the clarinet and piano; my dad, a pianist, taught high school band until he pursued administration. My brother is a trombone player. Once I started taking 48

lessons and getting serious, I began to make great progress on the trumpet. Around my junior year of high school, I knew I wanted to pursue music in college and try to build a musical career. My teachers, Tim Hudson in high school and Jim Ketch in college, were very instrumental in developing me into the player and person I am today. I cannot thank them enough for their time and wisdom. If I wasn’t a professional musician: I was very interested in architecture and drafting growing up and was always good at mathematics, so I would probably be an architect. I was enrolled in the school of education at UNCChapel Hill prior to winning my first professional job with the Charlotte Symphony. Teaching is very important to me, and I very well could have ended up a full time music educator as well. Most enjoyable music to perform: There’s definitely not one specific piece that I enjoy performing more than any others, but in general I love the impressionistic era in music around the late 1800s and early 1900s. I think a lot of impressionistic music brings all the colors of a full orchestra to life; each instrument is treated as a solo voice. Traditional methods of orchestration were completely changed from the romantic era which came before. For me, this music is equally satisfying to play and listen to. On the horizon: I am newly engaged. My fiancé, Amy, and I were high school sweethearts. We’re planning a wedding next April, and we cannot wait to see what Houston has in store for us!
