ANDRÉS OROZCO-ESTRADA

M U S I C D I R E C T O R ROY AND LILLIE CULLEN CHAIR

Houston Symphony Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada began his tenure in the 2014–15 season. He immediately established a dynamic presence on the podium and a deep bond with the musicians of the orchestra. He carefully curates his programs to feature engaging combinations of classical masterworks paired with the music of today, significant artistic collaborations with composers and guest artists, and innovative use of multimedia and visual effects, all in order to make meaningful connections with the audience. In the 2017–18 season, Orozco-Estrada continued to engage with audiences both with casual commentary from the stage and discussions with guests in “Behind the Scenes with Andrés” videos. Upon the commercial release of the critically acclaimed Dvořák series featuring the composer’s last four symphonies, he and the orchestra recently released a Haydn— The Creation recording in collaboration with the Houston Symphony Chorus and a Music of the Americas disc featuring Gershwin’s An American in Paris, Revueltas’ Sensemayá, Piazzolla’s Tangazo and Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. Born in Medellín, Colombia, Andrés began his musical studies on the violin and started conducting at age 15. At 19, he entered the renowned Vienna Music Academy, where he studied with Uroš Lajovic (pupil of the legendary Hans Swarowsky), and completed his degree with distinction conducting the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Musikverein. Andrés burst onto the international scene with two substitutions with the Vienna Philharmonic: the first, his debut in 2010, standing in for Esa-Pekka Salonen, and then in 2012, substituting for Riccardo Muti at the Musikverein. Andrés now regularly appears with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic, the Santa Cecilia Orchestra in Rome, the Orchestre National de France, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. His engagements for the 2017-18 season featured debuts at the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich and the Staatskapelle Dresden with two concerts at the Salzburg Easter Festival. As a guest, he performed once again with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and with the Vienna Philharmonic, which he led on a tour to Paris and Budapest. In June 2018, he toured Asia for two weeks with his Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his post in Houston, Andrés is chief conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and principal guest conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He was recently named music director of the Vienna Symphony as of the 2021-2022 season.

Betsy Cook Weber Director

The Houston Symphony Chorus, under the direction of Betsy Cook Weber since 2014, is the official choral unit of the Houston Symphony and consists of highly skilled and talented volunteer singers. Over the years, members of this historic ensemble have learned and performed the world’s great choral-orchestral masterworks under the batons of Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Hans Graf, Christoph Eschenbach, Robert Shaw and Helmut Rilling, among many others. In addition, the Chorus enjoys participating in the Houston Symphony’s popular programming under the batons of conductors such as Steven Reineke and Michael Krajewski. Recently, the ensemble sang the closing subscription concerts with the Prague Symphony Orchestra in the Czech Republic. Singers are selected for specific programs for which they have indicated interest. A singer might choose to perform in all 45 concerts, as was the case in a recent season, or might elect to participate in a single series. The Houston Symphony Chorus holds auditions by appointment and welcomes inquiries from interested singers. The Houston Symphony Chorus will hold its next round of auditions on August 9. Please contact anna.diemer@houstonsymphony.org for details.

Betsy Cook Weber | Houston Symphony Chorus, Director Dr. Betsy Cook Weber was appointed Director of the Houston Symphony Chorus in 2014. She also serves as professor of Music and director of Choral Studies at the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music. Vision

2025 Implementation Fund

Vision 2025, the Houston Symphony’s ten-year Strategic Plan, describes our vision to be America’s most relevant and accessible top ten orchestra by 2025. Since the plan was launched in 2015, the Houston Symphony has received generous contributions from hundreds of donors in support of the Vision 2025 Implementation Fund which surpassed $10 million in donations in the 2017-18 season. The fund includes support of specific initiatives that advance the goals of the Strategic Plan, such as: • The orchestra’s first multi-city European Tour in 20 years. • New and expanded education and community programming like the industry-leading Community-Embedded Musicians initiative. • Commissioning and recording initiatives like our cycle of late Dvořák symphonies, Music of the Americas, Haydn's The Creation, and Berg: Wozzeck, which recently earned the Houston Symphony’s first Grammy Award®. In addition, in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, donors have also supported the Symphony’s Harvey Recovery Fund, allowing us to continue to work toward our vision during a challenging time. We are honored by their generous support. $1 MILLION OR MORE Rochelle & Max Levit

ORCHESTRA PICKS for the 2018-19 season

After a busy July full of fun summer concerts, our musicians will take a well-deserved rest in August as they get ready for the Houston Symphony’s action-packed 105th Season. Looking ahead to the start of our exciting 2018-19 Season in September, we asked them which concerts they are most looking forward to. Here are a few of their top picks.

Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony

1

September 13, 15 & 16

I'm looking forward to the performances of Mahler's Symphony No. 2. In the first movement, as in most epic tales, you suddenly feel a journey has started, and there's no turning back. The piece in live performance takes on a life of its own. Joan DerHovsepian, Associate Principal Viola

Classical Mystery Tour : A Tribute to the Beatles | vocalists Since its initial performance at the Orange County Performing Arts Center (now renamed Segerstrom Center for the Arts) in 1996, Classical Mystery Tour has become the number one symphony pops attraction. The group has performed consistently for more than 20 years with more than 100 orchestras in the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia and Australia. The group played to packed houses at the Sydney Opera House and has performed with America’s most prestigious orchestras: the Houston Symphony, The Cleveland Orchestra, Boston Pops Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra and San Francisco Symphony, among many others. The four musicians in Classical Mystery Tour look and sound just like The Beatles, but Classical Mystery Tour is more than just a rock concert. The show presents more than two dozen Beatles tunes performed exactly as they were originally recorded. Hear “Penny Lane” with a live trumpet section, experience the beauty of “Yesterday” with an acoustic guitar and string quartet, enjoy the classical/rock blend on “I Am the Walrus” and relish the cascading orchestral crescendo of “A Day in the Life.” Classical Mystery Tour is the best of The Beatles—from early Beatles music on through the solo years—like you've never heard them before. Many have called it “the best show the Beatles never did!” The Los Angeles Times called Classical Mystery Tour “more than just an incredible simulation...the swelling strings and soaring French horn lines gave the live performance a high goose-bump quotient...the crowd stood and bellowed for more.” Classical Mystery Tour CDs and T-shirts are available for purchase at classicalmysterytour.com. The group is usually available after performances to autograph CDs and programs.

Program NOTES Hungarian Dances Nos. 6 and 5

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)

Johannes Brahms had a lifelong love of the style hongroise, a style of music popular in Hungary that was heavily influenced by Romani (gypsy) music. As a young composer, Brahms learned many of the tunes that would find their way into his Hungarian Dances from Hungarian friends; others he heard played by musicians in Vienna’s cafes. Though he slipped a few of his own original melodies into his collection, Brahms always insisted on being credited as the arranger of the Hungarian Dances, not the composer, since the Dances were based on preexisting themes. He would entertain friends with fiery, quasi-improvised renditions of them for many years before publishing them in arrangements for piano four hands. The first set, published in 1869, proved incredibly popular, but unfortunately some of the melodies were not anonymous folksongs, but fairly recent compositions still under copyright. This brought Brahms some legal trouble, but ultimately his inspired arrangements eclipsed the original versions. Almost immediately, the Dances were arranged for many different instruments and ensembles; the orchestrations by Brahms’ contemporary Albert Parlow are among the most often performed today. Critics have praised Dance No. 6 (based on a song by one Adolf Nittinger) for its hesitations and shifting tempos, which give musicians great expressive freedom. Among the most famous of the Hungarian Dances, the hot-blooded Dance No. 5 is based on a tune by the Hungarian composer Béla Kéler. It is written in the style of a czárdás, a kind of music historically associated with military recruitment in Hungary. Both dances employ an A-B-A structure in which the main dance surrounds a contrasting middle section. The Instruments: flute, piccolo, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, timpani, percussion and strings

Concerto for Marimba and Strings

Emmanuel Séjourné (b. 1961)

Emmanuel Séjourné is a French composer and percussionist who has produced a number of evocative works that have become staples of the percussion repertoire. Among his most popular compositions is his Concerto for Marimba and Strings, composed in 2006 for Romanian percussionist Bogdan Bacanu. The concerto’s lyric beauty, powerful yet concise form and virtuoso writing for the marimba have won it hundreds of performances around the world. Though Séjourné composed an additional opening movement for the concerto in 2015, our soloist will perform the original, two-movement version tonight. Séjourné has described his style as “rhythmic, romantic, energetic and inspired both by the Western classical tradition and by popular culture.” The Marimba Concerto exhibits all of these characteristics with a musical language that blends the Romantic 19th-century 22 | Houston Symphony

Donor & Subscriber Appreciation | Program Notes

concerto tradition with 20th-century popular song. Its mood seems to resonate particularly with the saudade (nostalgic, melancholy longing) of Portuguese and Brazilian music. The slow first movement begins with a moody introduction from the strings, which leads to an intense solo for the marimba. The cellos then intone the lyrical, melancholy first theme of the movement. The marimba later introduces a second main idea: a figure marked by pulsing chords. A passage featuring solo strings leads back to the first theme, now in a more intense guise in the violins. The second, pulsing idea then returns forte, but dies away to a coda marked “fragile, naïve.” Fast, repeated notes in the strings begin the dancing finale. This striking figure forms the main theme of the movement, cascading through the orchestra amid the soloist’s virtuoso passagework. Accompanied by pizzicato cellos and basses, the soloist then introduces a rhythmic second theme in an irregular meter, which adds a subtle tension to the music. The main theme returns to a more regular meter, but the irregular beat pattern reappears when the strings begin a dancing, rhythmic vamp, above which the soloist plays a singing melody. After the main theme returns, the second theme also reappears, but with a beat added, resolving the tension just in time for the concerto’s thrilling conclusion. The Instruments: strings

Symphonic Dances, Opus 45

Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) After fleeing Russia with his family and a few possessions during the Revolution of 1917, Rachmaninoff dedicated the rest of his career to the piano. Though the grueling tours he made each year as a traveling virtuoso were the fastest and surest way to recoup his family’s lost fortune, his concert schedule left little time for composing; during the last 26 years of his life, he would only finish six original compositions. Completed at age 67, Symphonic Dances would be his last. He wrote it while staying at a quiet estate on Long Island during the summer of 1940, as the Battle of Britain raged on the other side of the Atlantic. When asked about his new piece by a reporter, Rachmaninoff offered a typically cryptic answer: “A composer always has his own ideas of his works, but I do not believe that he should ever reveal them.” Rachmaninoff did leave a few clues as to “his own ideas,” however, in the form of musical quotations and the suggestive movement titles “Noon,” “Twilight” and “Midnight,” which Rachmaninoff supplied for a ballet adaptation of the work that never materialized. After a quiet, almost hesitant opening, the first movement (“Noon”) launches into a forceful dance. Quieter woodwind solos then lead to one of the most famous saxophone solos in the

orchestral literature: a long, haunting melody that is later taken up by the violins and cellos. Marked misterioso, a bass clarinet solo initiates a strange, fantastical development. The fierce opening dance returns, but dissipates as shimmering, tremolo strings introduce a dreamy coda. The violins then play a quotation from Rachmaninoff’s First Symphony, a brilliant work that tragically met with failure at its premiere in 1897 and remained unknown until after Rachmaninoff’s death. In his First Symphony, the theme functions as an ominous, Tchaikovskian “fate” motif that recurs throughout the work—indeed, its first four notes bear a strong resemblance to those of the Dies irae, a medieval chant that became a musical symbol of death. Here, however, it sounds like a wistful memory. The “Twilight” second movement begins with a figure played by muted brass instruments; it stands like a gate leading into a world of memories. This figure recurs throughout the movement, demarcating a series of ghostly waltzes. By 1940, the waltz was a dance of the past; the movement seems to evoke memories of a vanished epoch, perhaps prerevolutionary Russia. Near the end, the waltz swells to a ghastly climax, and the music accelerates to a powerful rhythmic passage. This quickly collapses, however, and the movement ends with fragments of the waltz. The “Midnight” finale begins with a flashing chord for full orchestra followed by sighing woodwinds. This introduction leads to a fast, fantastical main theme. Though its influence is subtle at first, the Dies irae permeates this movement: this is a dance of death. Another force is also at work, however; the Dies irae is answered by a vigorous, march-like theme played by the lower strings, as if in imitation of a men’s chorus. Indeed, this theme is a traditional Russian Orthodox chant that Rachmaninoff used in his All-Night Vigil, a major sacred choral work he composed in 1915. In the original, the melody sets praises of the divine, ending with the words “Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, glory to you, God.” The Alleluia theme builds to a dramatic fanfare for full orchestra. The sighing introduction then returns to begin a slower, contrasting middle section. The Dies irae now appears lugubriously in the cellos amid strange, sliding violin glissandi. Above rumbling cellos and basses, the bass clarinet intones a haunting new idea, which becomes lusher and more passionate as it is developed, leading to icy, descending figures in the violins. Gradually, the faster dance returns, this time full of grotesquely glittering appearances of the Dies irae. After a climactic statement of the Dies irae, the Alleluia melody makes a militant return. With these two forces locked in combat, the dance races defiantly to its end. — Calvin Dotsey The Instruments: 2 flutes, piccolo, 2 oboes, English horn, 2 clarinets, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion, harp, piano and strings InTUNE — July 2018 | 23

Did you know? • During World War II, the famous opening four notes of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony were used by the Allies as a musical “V for Victory” symbol; it just so happens that their short-short-short-long rhythm is Morse Code for the letter “V.”

Program NOTES

BEETHOVEN'S MUSICAL REVOLUTION

There are few individuals who truly change the course of history. Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) is one of those individuals. There was music before Beethoven and music after Beethoven; the revolution wrought by his works continues to resonate through music made today. From later classical composers to Hollywood film scores and even rock ’n’ roll, Beethoven’s influence is everywhere. Before Beethoven, music was largely seen as a pleasant pastime, a diversion. After Beethoven, music would be increasingly considered the most profound of the arts. He took the refined, elegant, “powdered-wig” musical style of the 18th century and exploded it with unpredictable rhythms, daring harmonies and a broader scope. What Homer’s epics were for the ancients, Beethoven’s symphonies would be for modern times. Beethoven would prove that music alone could embody the eternal struggle between darkness and light and chart the course from despair to victory. He would prove that music could be heroic. Beethoven lived during an era in need of heroes: the epoch of the Napoleonic Wars was one of extraordinary violence and upheaval. After the French revolution toppled centuries of aristocratic rule in France, Napoleon promised to spread the revolution’s values of liberty, equality and fraternity to the rest of Europe by the force of his grande armée. Beethoven had a love-hate relationship with Napoleon; he initially admired his military genius and revolutionary ideals, but was later disillusioned as Napoleon revealed himself to be a tyrant. As Napoleon’s armies marched across Europe, Beethoven remarked, “It’s a pity I don’t understand the art of war as well as I do the art of music. I would conquer him!” But battles were not only fought around Beethoven; with regard to his music, perhaps the most important struggle was within himself. Just as Beethoven was winning a reputation as the leading composer in Vienna, he was faced with perhaps the worst possible fate for a musician: slow, progressive hearing loss that would render him completely deaf by the end of his life. Beethoven wrote: “But what a humiliation for me when someone standing next to me heard a flute in the distance and I heard nothing, or someone heard a shepherd singing and again I heard nothing. Such incidents drove me almost to despair, a little more of that and I would have ended my life. It was only my art that held me back. Oh, it seemed impossible to me to leave this world before I had produced all that I felt capable of producing…” Heroically, he resolved to persevere for the sake of his art. This crisis marked a major turning point in his musical style; he took the musical language he had inherited, tore it apart and put it back together again. His contemporaries were often shocked by the radical new sounds that resounded through Vienna’s concert halls; some believed he had gone mad, though a few recognized his genius. The four pieces on tonight’s program exemplify the new, heroic style of this period. — Calvin Dotsey 30 | Houston Symphony

Joseph Willibrord Mähler painted this portrait of Beethoven circa 1804, just as he was creating his revolutionary new music.

Overture to Egmont, Opus 84 During the winter of 1809-10, Beethoven composed incidental music for Goethe’s play, Egmont. The play was inspired by the historical Count Egmont, who became a martyr for the cause of Flemish freedom when he was executed by the occupying Spanish. His death would help foment the Eighty Years War, through which the Netherlands won independence from Spain. An overture is a piece of music played before a theatrical work to help evoke the atmosphere of the drama to follow. Beethoven’s Egmont Overture opens with a slow, solemn introduction representing the oppression of the Flemish people under Spanish rule. The fast, intense music that follows expresses the anger and revolutionary ferment of the revolt. Near the end of the overture, the music comes to a halt, representing Egmont’s execution. The following “Siegessymphonie” or “victory symphony” foretells the liberation of the Flemish people. The Instruments: 2 flutes (one doubling piccolo), 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani and strings

Overture to Coriolan, Opus 62 The tragic Overture to Coriolan shows Beethoven in a more anti-heroic vein; it was inspired by a contemporary play that, like Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, was based on Plutarch’s biography of a legendary Roman general. Coriolanus begins as a war hero, but when the Roman masses turn on him he is exiled. Allying with Rome’s enemies, he marches on the city until his mother and wife implore him not to lay waste to their home. Distraught at what he

Beethoven 5 | Program Notes

has done, he tries to stop the attack. Unable to extricate himself from his enemies, he commits suicide. Beethoven’s overture has four main ideas: the first is a series of long notes, each of which is cut off by a powerful orchestral chord, a potent symbol of Coriolanus’ rage. A fast, explosive theme follows, leading to the third idea: a lyrical, pleading melody that may represent Coriolanus’ mother. An impetuous theme characterized by a nervous, short-long rhythm follows. These main ideas are developed and reprised, leading to a haunting coda in which Coriolanus’ music disintegrates and dies away. The Instruments: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani and strings

Overture No. 3 to Leonore, Opus 72b In Beethoven’s era, opera was seen as the most prestigious musical genre, and Beethoven had long dreamed of composing one. After considering and rejecting many subjects, in 1804 he settled on a story based on true events that occurred during the recent French Revolution. Leonore disguises herself as a man in order to rescue her unjustly imprisoned husband from the evil Don Pizarro’s dungeon. Unluckily, the opera’s premiere in 1805 took place only a few days after Napoleon’s troops invaded Vienna. When Beethoven revived the opera the following year, he revised the overture. This revised version, known today as the Leonore Overture No. 3, is so symphonic in conception that it is frequently performed on its own in the concert hall. It begins with a slow introduction that uses some of the music sung by Leonore’s husband as he yearns for freedom while still imprisoned. This leads to the fast, fiery music that forms the main body of the piece. At the climax, the orchestra falls quiet as a trumpet sounds from a distance, symbolizing the salvation of Leonore and her husband. The overture concludes with a joyous celebration. The Instruments: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, timpani and strings

Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Opus 67 Though sketches for the Fifth Symphony can be traced back to 1804, Beethoven truly set to work on the symphony in late 1807, completing it in early 1808. Though it has since become one of the most famous pieces of music in history, it would have sounded strange and new to Beethoven’s contemporaries at its premiere. We invite you to imagine what it might have been like to hear this music for the first time. A symphony is an extended work for orchestra made up of smaller parts, which are called movements (because each one has its own tempo, or “movement”). In his Fifth Symphony, Beethoven creates a narrative arc over the course of its four movements that leads from the darkness of the opening to the triumph of the finale.

The first movement begins with perhaps the four most famous notes in all music. Traditionally interpreted as “fate knocking at the door,” this iconic opening idea forms the basis of the entire symphony; Beethoven constructs his grand musical forms from simple building blocks, making the music gripping and coherent. The opening idea soon cascades throughout the orchestra until the horns expand on it, introducing a new, softer theme in the violins. This more hopeful melody is derived from the opening idea, but turned upside-down; in a way, it is its mirror image. The opening returns and the main ideas of the movement are repeated, leading to a turbulent development. As the development progresses, the music becomes weaker, as if dying away, until the opening idea makes a powerful reappearance. The oboe plays a brief, poignant solo before the other main ideas of the movement are reprised. In the end, the fateful opening idea ultimately prevails. The slower second movement begins with a ruminative melody in the violas and cellos, to which the woodwinds and violins respond with consoling phrases. A brighter, more optimistic theme emerges in the clarinets and bassoons, but it is interrupted by uncertain, questioning music in the violins. Turning away from these doubts, the theme resumes resplendently in the brass. These two themes alternate and are varied with each appearance, growing more complex as the movement unfolds. After a brief, misty introduction, the third movement begins with a grim march based on the rhythm of the four notes that began the symphony. A contrasting middle section banishes the oppressive mood of the march with an upsurge of life; when the march returns, it appears in a weakened form featuring pizzicato strings. The final movements are linked by a mysterious bridge that crescendos to the triumphant entrance of the trombones, which mark the beginning of the finale. Beethoven presents a series of soaring, triumphant themes, leading to a final, stormy development. Suddenly, the music slows and becomes quieter as the weakened version of the march from the third movement reappears. The uplifting main themes of the movement are then reprised in preparation for an extended, jubilant coda. —Calvin Dotsey The Instruments: 2 flutes, piccolo, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, timpani and strings

Sustainability FUND The Houston Symphony pays special tribute to the 137 donors who made transformational gifts to complete the Sustainability Fund. On December 31, 2015, the Houston Symphony celebrated an extraordinary achievement: the completion of a five-year, $15 million Sustainability Fund, which has transformed the orchestra’s financial position. The Symphony was able to close out the campaign thanks to challenge grant funds totaling $1,050,000 provided by Bobby & Phoebe Tudor, Cora Sue & Harry Mach, Janice Barrow, Steve & Joella Mach and Robert & Jane Cizik. The Ciziks provided the final $500,000 to allow the Symphony to reach its $15 million Sustainability Fund goal. Houston Endowment Estate of Jean R. Meet Leonardo Soto, timpani Leonardo R. Soto Jr. is the newly appointed Principal Timpanist of the Houston Symphony and the first native Hispanic timpanist to play in a professional orchestra in the United States. Leo served as principal timpanist of the Charlotte Symphony from 2009 until 2018, and the Michigan Opera Theatre-Detroit Opera House from 2003 to 2009. He is also an active member of Miami's Nu Deco Ensemble. As an educator, Leo was a faculty member at Queens University of Charlotte, an artist-in-residence at Central Piedmont Community College and an instructor for the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestras program. He made his solo debut with the Charlotte Symphony in 2012, and in January 2017, Leo performed the world premiere of Evolution, a percussion concerto written for him by Leonard Mark Lewis. Leo has worked and toured with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, New World Symphony, City Music Cleveland, Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Toledo Symphony and the Grand Rapids Symphony, among others. As a Latin percussionist, he has recorded and toured with artists and bands from across the United States. Leo is proudly endorsed by Freer Percussion products, Remo drumheads, Luft Mallets and Pearl/Adams instruments. You are one of the newest members of the Houston Symphony’s orchestra. What was your audition process like? Timpani auditions are always interesting. You don’t play on your own instruments, so it’s always an extra challenge to try to represent your playing in a new hall with a new instrument. After I made it to the trials, I was asked to do the European tour, so I got to meet and hang with my new colleagues in the orchestra as well as management. We experienced all these amazing, beautiful concert halls, so it became a bonding experience for all of us. What inspired you to become a musician? How did you choose your instrument? My father is a self-taught drummer, and my mother is an actress. I did a little bit of both. When I decided to focus on drums my father said, “Yes, but you need to be an educated musician and not just a drummer,” so he took me to the conservatory at the University of Chile. I saw the youth symphony rehearsing Huapango by Mexican composer José Pablo Moncayo. When I saw the timpanist, I thought, “That’s what I want to play!” Is there a notable performance or event in your career you’d like to share? I really enjoy playing music, no matter the setting! I believe we all had a beautiful moment in Vienna during the tour. Personally, I will always remember that concert. Also, the last time I went to Chile, for the first time my father, my younger brother and I got to play together, and that memory will stay with me always.
