HELLO LETTER TO PATRONS

NOVEMBER 2016

Welcome to the Houston Symphony! We have an exciting mix of classical and pops guest artists on hand this month, topped off with an all-Mozart Thanksgiving program. Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov returns to Houston to perform one of audiences’ most beloved Schumann works, Piano Concerto in A minor. We congratulate Daniil on recently being named Gramophone Artist of the Year for 2016. The Artist of the Year award is the only Gramophone prize decided by international public vote, and recent winners have included violinist Leonidas Kavakos, whose inspirational visit to the Houston Symphony last month as both conductor and violin soloist left us spellbound. After Daniil turns his artistry to the Schumann Concerto, Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada leads the orchestra in Rachmaninoff’s lushly scored Symphony No. 2. We also congratulate Andrés, who was recently honored by the Colombia-Texas Chamber of Commerce (CTCC) during its first Recognition and Charity Gala which paid tribute to prominent area leaders and organizations. The Houston Symphony is proud to partner with the CTTC to assist low-income and underserved youth in Colombia with mentorship in music by Musical Ambassador/Assistant Conductor Carlos Andrés Botero. Funds raised by the CTCC in support of this partnership will supplement Carlos’ work and efforts in Colombia over the course of the Symphony’s current season. We are proud of the contributions of both Carlos and Andrés, and we are honored by the recognition of the CTCC. On the POPS front, our performance this month brings back Houston favorite Tony DeSare, who joins Principal POPS Conductor Mike Krajewski in a program of classic piano pop repertoire featuring Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Tony, a celebrated pianist and modern-day crooner, will also salute songs from great piano composers such as Cole Porter and Irving Berlin, as well as Billy Joel and Elton John. Tony and Mike reunite in this performance that promises to truly be a “Best of Mike” moment as we continue to revel in the fun and excitement of his Farewell Season with the Houston Symphony. And on that note, we’d like your help raising $297,000 in support of Mike’s final concert weekend as our Principal POPS Conductor on May 26–28, 2017, when he wraps up his 17-year reign in grand fashion with “Classic Broadway,” a concert celebrating his favorite composers from the golden age of Broadway. All $100 or more in-hall donors during the 2016-17 BBVA Compass POPS Season will have the opportunity to “Be Like Mike” with a limited edition Mike Krajewski cut-out. If you can’t make it to the concert, but want to join in the fun, just text BELIKEMIKE to 41444 or donate online at houstonsymphony.org/donate. A must for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday is appreciation of family and friends, copious quantities of homemade food, and—Mozart! We hope you will include your Symphony family in your holiday plans when veteran soloist and conductor Jeffrey Kahane leads an all-Mozart program on Thanksgiving weekend, November 25–27. This is just the start of the holiday season, though, and we have many more festive and jubilant programs in store, including those featured on the inside back cover, so start making plans for the whole family now. We’ll see you at Jones Hall!

ANDRÉS ANDRÉS OROZCO-ESTRADA

M U S I C D I R E C T O R

Houston Symphony Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada began his tenure in the 2014–15 season. He immediately established a dynamic presence on the podium and a deep bond with the musicians of the orchestra. Andrés carefully curates his programs to feature engaging combinations of classical masterworks paired with the music of today, significant artistic collaborations with composers and guest artists, and innovative use of multimedia and visual effects, all in order to make meaningful connections with the audience. In the 2016–17 season, Andrés will continue to engage with audiences both with casual commentary from the stage and discussions with guests in “Behind the Scenes with Andrés” videos. On the recording front, Andrés and the Symphony will release the third disc in their critically acclaimed Dvořák Symphony series. Additional projects with Dutch recording label Pentatone are recordings of the Music of the Americas, which will include Gershwin’s An American in Paris and Revueltas’ Sensemayá; Rachmaninoff’s complete orchestral piano works with Denis Kozhukhin; and Haydn’s The Creation. Born in Medellín, Colombia, Andrés began his musical studies on the violin and started conducting at age 15. At 19, he entered the Vienna Music Academy, where he studied with Uroš Lajovic (pupil of the legendary Hans Swarowsky), and completed his degree with distinction, conducting the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Musikverein. Andrés burst on the international scene with two substitutions with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra: the first, his debut in 2010, standing in for Esa-Pekka Salonen, and then in 2012, substituting for Riccardo Muti at the Musikverein. Orozco-Estrada now regularly appears with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic and Leipzig Gewandhaus orchestras, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Santa Cecilia Orchestra in Rome and the Orchestre National de France. Recent debuts have included the Philadelphia Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Oslo Philharmonic and the Israel Philharmonic in New York. In the summer of 2014, he also made his debut at Glyndebourne Festival Opera conducting Don Giovanni, which immediately led to an invitation to conduct La traviata in 2017. The 2016–17 season includes debuts with the San Francisco Symphony, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition to his post in Houston, Andrés is chief conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and principal guest conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

John & Lindy Rydman salute Vintage Virtuoso

This holiday season, for the 20 consecutive year, Spec’s Wines, Spirits & Finer Foods will host Vintage Virtuoso, a superlative evening of great wine and great food. th

In the 1990s, Lindy and John Rydman, the owners of Spec’s and founders of the Spec’s Charitable Foundation, looked for innovative ways to support the Houston Symphony. They chose to play to their strengths by creating a fundraiser for the wine industry to support the Symphony’s Education and Community programs. Over the past two decades, Vintage Virtuoso has raised almost $2.5 million. Vintage Virtuoso is a truly collaborative event. Spec’s closely works with its suppliers and distributors to make sure the evening’s guests experience a glamorous, exciting tasting and seated dinner. The event is part of the reason Spec’s is the Houston Symphony’s largest corporate donor. For its dedication to music education for Houston-area students, Spec’s was recognized with the 2015 BCA 10 award from Americans for the Arts. This year’s Vintage Virtuoso takes place at the Royal Sonesta Hotel on December 7, 2016. If you’re a fan of delicious food, great wine or the Houston Symphony, don’t miss it! OPENING NIGHT Concert & Gala

2016

The Houston Symphony’s Opening Night Concert and Gala celebrated the 30th anniversary of ConocoPhillips’ support as the Opening Night Concert Sponsor and Opening Night Gala Lead Corporate Underwriter. Chaired by Ralph Burch with Honorary Chairs Lisa and Ryan Lance and Underwriting Chairs Robin Angly and Miles Smith, the gala raised more than $730,000 for the Houston Symphony’s Education and Community Programming, making it the second most successful Opening Night Concert and Gala in the history of the event. The evening featured Academy Awardwinning actor Sir Ben Kingsley narrating Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada led the musicians of the Houston Symphony in a concert program that, in addition to Peter and the Wolf, featured Rossini’s thrilling Overture to The Thieving Magpie and Richard Strauss’ extraordinary Suite from Der Rosenkavalier.

Following the performance, more than 590 black-tie party-goers continued the evening at The Corinthian for a spectacular seated dinner catered by Jackson and Company. The décor, created by Bergner and Johnson, transformed The Corinthian into a contemporary venue with large red drum chandeliers and vibrant centerpieces. Accompanying the meal were wine pairings provided by Spec’s Wines, Spirits & Finer Foods. The dessert, a “Symphony Trio,” was garnished with a chocolate oil derrick in celebration of ConocoPhillips’ continued support.

LISTENING Since the beginning of my conducting career, I have created education programs that integrate music into school curriculum and focus on active listening skills. Why active listening, as opposed to, say, passive listening? Active listening differs from passive listening, or simply hearing something, in that it is an intentional act that is learned and can be improved with practice. A large body of research suggests that through intentionally listening, children develop skills of comprehension, categorization, recall, recognition, description, identification and evaluation. Is all of my work purely for the development of certain academic skills? I wouldn’t be honest if I said that’s all it’s about for me. Helping students unlock the mysteries of classical music is exhilarating and a complete joy to observe. Students experiencing something so complex for the first time and really understanding it is nothing short of awesome. I strongly believe the arts should be a part of everyone’s life. Actively listening to music positively contributes to social interaction, level of functioning and, perhaps, overall success in life (see the research of Weiss and Lillywhite, 1981).

unlock the mysteries of classical music

So, how does a person go about actively listening to music? In my education programs, I provide students with something specific to listen for, such as melody or rhythm. This suggestion is just the beginning of the process, as the students are encouraged to

Melody / Tune

Rhythm

In a church hymn, the tune is always in the soprano or top part with all of the other voices providing the accompaniment. We often equate a melody with a tune that can be sung. This is true, but limited. In classical music, composers often have the melody being played by low or middle range instruments. Sometimes you have to “hunt” for the melody when it’s not clearly on the top. Composers of the 20th century and beyond have broken through the traditional definition of a melody and written melodies that can be angular, disjunct and sometimes not “vocal” in nature— they are still melodies!

Have you ever stopped at a red light and heard something pulsating? After making sure it isn’t your car, you notice next to you a young person whose car stereo is louder than you imagine possible. The bass line is pulsating, vibrating with every beat. Rhythm is the most natural, primordial musical sense we have. It all begins with a heartbeat. Now, here’s the rub—sometimes a composer writes music that aligns with our own natural rhythms. This can seem very calming or exciting. Sometimes, though, a composer writes music in which the rhythm is in direct conflict with our natural rhythm and will feel disjunct or jarring.

build upon that initial bit of information by asking questions and interacting with me, the musicians and their fellow students. Students leave our concerts feeling smarter (having recognized some of the concert content), engaged and often curious to discover more about the world of music. In the end, this is what it is all about: giving students the tools they need to open their minds to classical music. But active listening isn’t just for kids, and along with my colleagues at the Houston Symphony, Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada and Musical Ambassador Carlos Andrés Botero, we regularly encourage our adult audiences to move beyond a simply pleasant, passive experience of classical music to a potentially transformative, active experience. While Andrés regularly provides insights and perspective from the podium during his concerts, Carlos provides context and connections in both his pre-concert Prelude talks in Jones Hall and his Houston Symphony podcasts, On the Music.

Even without having something specific to listen for in a particular piece of music, I suggest there are several things to listen for in any classical performance. With anywhere from 70 to 100 musicians onstage and many sounds happening at the same time, it is sometimes hard to know where to focus. A number of years ago, my father asked me what to listen for in a world premiere I was about to conduct. The four tools below help not only demystify the classical music experience, but provide a more meaningful experience through active listening.

Texture / Harmony

Visual

Musicians have a tendency to become very technical when it comes to describing how the sounds go together to form the harmony. My suggestion is that you imagine the ensemble (a duet up through a full symphony orchestra) as a textured blanket of sounds. Imagine the different colors (timbre) of the instruments being different threads. By themselves they are one thing, and combined they form something totally different. Quite often a composer will not focus on melody or rhythm, but will instead create a “soundscape” or “blanket of sound.” Be at one with that, and enjoy the plethora of sounds that an ensemble can create.

Often when we go to a concert hall, we are told that because musicians make sound it is somehow not okay to enjoy or try to understand the visual aspects of a piece. It is always more fulfilling to hear and see a piece performed live, particularly with music written during the 20th century and beyond. The choreography of the percussion section, the physical endurance of the strings and the aerobic intensity of playing a woodwind or brass instrument are very important parts of experiencing some of the greatest music ever written. It’s the living part that makes it so exciting. InTUNE — November 2016 | 19

The Classical Season is endowed by The Wortham Foundation, Inc. in memory of Gus S. and Lyndall F. Wortham.

This season brings the release of Transcendental. The double album is his third title as an exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist and the first time Liszt’s complete concert etudes have been recorded in full for the label. He was recently awarded Gramophone’s 2016 Artist of the Year award and has received his second Grammy Award nomination with Rachmaninoff Variations. He performs Rachmaninoff for his debuts with the Berlin Philharmonic, Melbourne and Sydney Symphony Orchestras, in addition to the Munich Philharmonic’s “Rachmaninoff Cycle” tour. An accomplished composer, Daniil reprises his own acclaimed concerto in Kansas City; and he maintains a busy recital schedule, including duo recitals with his former teacher, pianist Sergei Babayan. Last season, in addition to headlining the prestigious Nobel Prize Concert and performing with some of the world’s leading orchestras, he undertook residencies in Lugano, Switzerland, and at London’s Wigmore Hall. In 2013–14, he released Trifonov: The Carnegie Recital, the pianist’s first recording as an exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist. Recorded at his sold-out Carnegie Hall recital debut, the album scored both an ECHO Klassik Award and a Grammy nomination. Besides the similarly Grammy-nominated Rachmaninoff Variations, recorded with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Yannick Nézet-Séguin, his discography features a Chopin album for Decca and a recording of Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto with Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra. During the 2010–11 season, Daniil won medals at three of the music world’s most prestigious competitions: Third Prize in Warsaw’s Chopin Competition, First Prize in Tel Aviv’s Rubinstein Competition, and First Prize and Grand Prix in Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Competition. In 2013, he was awarded the prestigious Franco Abbiati Prize for Best Instrumental Soloist by Italy’s foremost music critics. Born in Nizhny Novgorod in 1991, Daniil began his musical training at age 5. He attended Moscow’s Gnessin School of Music and Cleveland Institute of Music. He also has studied composition and continues to write for piano, chamber ensemble and orchestra.

Program NOTES Piano Concerto in A minor, Opus 54

Symphony No. 2 in E minor, Opus 27

Dashing and colorful solo-piano works practically poured from Robert Schumann when he was in his 20s. But combining piano and orchestra stumped him: Schumann started three concertos, only to give up. The glittery style cultivated by many mid-19thcentury pianists didn’t click with him. “I realize I cannot write a concerto for a virtuoso, so I must think up something else,” Schumann wrote.

By the time Sergei Rachmaninoff turned 30, he had gone from the devastating failure of his Symphony No. 1 to the smashing success of his Piano Concerto No. 2. Now, the Moscow Philharmonic’s conductor was so eager for a new Rachmaninoff symphony that he twice announced its premiere before it was even complete. The young composer described the holdup to a friend, “A month or so ago I did indeed finish a symphony, but to this must be added the crucial words, ‘in rough.’ … While I was planning to put it in a tidy state, it became terribly boring and repulsive to me. So I cast it on one side and took up something else.” Nevertheless, Rachmaninoff vowed, “I shall have a symphony.”

Robert Schumann (1810-1856)

In his early 30s, after composing his first symphony, Schumann found his way. A Fantasy for piano and orchestra, in one multifaceted movement, was his first step. The music world had little interest in a single-movement concerto, though, so it never had a performance. Four years later, Schumann added two new movements to the Fantasy. The result was the ardent and poetic Piano Concerto in A minor, one of audiences’ most-beloved Schumann works. It blends the free spirit of his solo-piano pieces, many of which are collections of vignettes, with his forebears’ concerto tradition. Whereas the opening movements of Mozart and Beethoven concertos typically unfold in an unbroken flow, this concerto’s first movement—born as the Fantasy—embraces more contrast. A single, staccato orchestral chord starts the concerto with a bang, and the piano flings out ringing chords of its own. Then the woodwinds sing out the ardent theme that, in changing guises, will tie the movement together. Schumann first brings out the theme’s passions, marshaling the piano’s agility and the orchestra’s heft. The tempo slows, and the piano and solo winds turn the theme into a reverie. A reprise of the piano’s opening flourishes heralds the return of the theme’s more-passionate incarnation, and a dramatic, sonorous piano solo builds it to a climax. Then an impetuous new version of the theme sweeps the movement to its close. The second movement, labeled Intermezzo, offers a short, sweet break from the excitement. It begins and ends with a graceful mix of tiptoeing chords and sinuous melody; the centerpiece is a lyrical reverie led by the cellos. After the orchestra gently echoes the first movement theme, the piano launches into the exuberant finale. Not only does the music exude sunshine and vitality, but Schumann makes portions of it even more buoyant by breaking free from the main rhythmic flow. The Houston Symphony turns to the rousing Piano Concerto No. 1 by Schumann’s friend, Felix Mendelssohn, in March. The Instruments: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani and strings

26 | Houston Symphony

Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943)

Fulfilling that promise took another year. The Symphony No. 2 finally premiered in January 1907, offering even headier doses of the lyricism and opulence that audiences adore in the Concerto No. 2. The cellos and basses begin the symphony, intoning a dark-hued melody that establishes the introduction’s brooding. The violins respond with a plaintive theme with a distinctive contour: two steps upward, then a steady descent. That theme’s evolution animates the first movement. Rachmaninoff stresses the theme’s first segment, with its taut up-and-down contour, to build the introduction’s tension. A surging new incarnation of that same motif then launches the first movement proper, where agitation builds quickly. A burst of sleek, silky lyricism—the first of many in the symphony—offers a respite before turbulence flares anew, propelled by an even fierier version of that main theme. The second movement’s driving rhythms and jagged themes give the intensity a new form. But it dies away at the end of the movement, and in the Adagio, Rachmaninoff’s big-heartedness takes over. Stillness reigns at first, thanks to a tender, long-breathed clarinet solo. Then emotions well up. The violins launch into a broad, glowing melody accompanied richly by the other strings. After the first movement’s theme reappears, injecting a touch of pensiveness, Rachmaninoff’s lyricism grows even more fervent. A splash of orchestral color opens the dashing, jubilant finale, and the symphony’s most charismatic tune of all ratchets up the excitement. The Instruments: 3 flutes (1 doubling piccolo), 3 oboes (1 doubling English horn), 2 clarinets, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion and strings —Steven Brown

Program NOTES Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor, K.491

Symphony No. 38 in D major, K.504 (Prague)

During his last few years, Mozart created a series of stormy works in minor keys, such as his Requiem and Symphony No. 40. Some researchers suspect a psychological cause: a mood-swing disorder. Periods when he was energized and creative would have alternated with depressive phases. If there’s something to that, Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24 is a vivid example. H.C. Robbins Landon, an authority on music from 18th-century Vienna, cited the concerto’s manuscript. Whereas the neatness of most Mozart manuscripts reveals how easily music flowed from him, Landon thought the messiness of this one revealed a fitful gestation. “The existence of many erasures and ... widespread changes may suggest a state of violent inner tension, which is reflected in this, the most impetuous and aggressive of all the piano concertos,” Landon wrote.

Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro created such a sensation in Prague, the Bohemian capital, that the city’s musicians and connoisseurs invited the composer to come from Vienna and enjoy the acclaim. Arriving in January 1787, Mozart found that Figaro tunes had even been turned into dance music for Prague’s highsociety balls. “Here they talk of nothing but Figaro; play, blow, sing or whistle nothing but Figaro; go to no opera but Figaro and always Figaro,” Mozart reported. “A great compliment to me, to be sure.”

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)

The work’s drama comes across regardless of any psychological backstory, though. With its extremes of ferocity and tenderness, the concerto ranks among Mozart’s most arresting works. The opening is quiet but unsettled. The strings, in unison, intone the jagged theme that will dominate the first movement. As the winds enter and flesh out the harmony, the tension builds until that main theme suddenly thunders from the entire orchestra. The music remains restless even as it grows quieter, and only the piano’s pensive entrance brings a real change of tone. Though the keyboard soon gets drawn into the orchestra’s turbulence, it also contributes lyricism and brightness, expanding the conflict of moods that drives the movement. In the spot near the end that Mozart left open for the soloist’s improvisation—in musical parlance, the cadenza— conductor-pianist Jeffrey Kahane will play his own creation with the Houston Symphony. The second movement sets aside the emotional crossplay. The piano sings out a melody whose grace and sweetness exude serenity, all the more so when the orchestra adds its warmth. The woodwinds twice step to the fore—first to introduce a more plaintive note, later to make the movement even more mellifluous than at the outset. The finale, a theme and variations, starts quietly but grows more and more fiery as the piano adds its vehemence. A couple of gentler variations offer only momentary respite, and the concerto surges to a fierce close. The Houston Symphony will perform another dramatic piano concerto, Beethoven’s Emperor, in January. The Instruments: flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani and strings

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

In response to popular demand, Mozart presented a concert of his works, and he took the opportunity to unveil a work he had finished shortly before leaving home. Thanks to the setting, the Symphony No. 38 eventually became known as the Prague Symphony. Alone among the mature Mozart’s symphonies, it has only three movements. No explanation has come down to us for Mozart’s omitting the typical minuet, but one thing is certain—it couldn’t have been because he meant the work to be diminutive. The symphony opens with one of the grandest-scale first movements Mozart ever devised. It begins with an imposing slow introduction. After a sonorous opening, the music soon grows dark and biting, as if it’s leading to a scene of despair. But the symphony has a different story to tell. As the Allegro begins, the strings’ mellowness brings a more genial tone. Then the winds jump in, and their jauntiness confirms that Mozart is brushing away the gloom. The rest of the movement is crisp, snappy and sonorous, and the climactic chords almost explode with excitement. Mellow strings set the mood in the second movement, too. Warm, melodious and flowing, the Andante offers a repose after the first movement’s excitement. Even when a more biting tone intrudes, it soon gives way to softness. And the music sometimes moves with the lilt of a dance. Did Mozart think of this as a slow movement and minuet rolled into one? The finale is a romp. As it begins, notice the violins’ first four notes: That vaulting motif rings out from the orchestra—sometimes lightly, sometimes lustily—in a jubilant crossplay that propels the symphony to a rousing close. Another spirited symphony is in store for March, when the Houston Symphony plays Beethoven’s Seventh. The Instruments: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani and strings The printed music for this work were donated by Charles and Naomi Black, in memory of Alan Ryder and Charles & Althea Black.

A Mozart Thanksgiving | Program Notes

Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major, K.467 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Mozart left his hometown of Salzburg, Austria, in the summer of 1781 and set up housekeeping in Vienna. Concerts featuring his music became one of the young composer’s main sources of income; he naturally doubled as piano soloist, since keyboard virtuosity had been one of his claims to fame since childhood. During Mozart’s first five years in Vienna, he created 15 piano concertos—including the two in this Houston Symphony program—as showcases. The Concerto No. 21 has been the best-known ever since its seductive Andante accompanied a love scene in Elvira Madigan, a Swedish film that became an international hit in 1967. The complete work sandwiches that bittersweet lyricism between two flights of exuberance and brightness. Like the Concerto No. 24, this one begins with strings playing quietly and in unison. But the music here is crisp and catchy, and it gains a festive-occasion brilliance as the rest of the orchestra joins in. The soloist’s entrance brings another contrast with No. 24. Rather than changing the mood, the piano adds its own flourish to the excitement, then plays a glistening trill as the orchestra repeats the striding first theme. The piano adds cozier moments as well as restless ones, but those are sidelights to the prevailing jubilation. After the cadenza—again by pianist Jeffrey Kahane in this weekend’s concerts—the excitement simmers down, and the movement ends as quietly as it began.

OUR THANKS Houston Methodist strives to provide high-quality health care in a spiritual environment to all patients. Houston Methodist includes seven hospitals in the Houston area, delivering care closer to home. Their flagship Houston Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center is ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the No. 1 hospital in Texas and Houston. As the only center of its kind in the country, CPAM is comprised of a specialized group of more than 100 elite physicians working collaboratively to address the specific demands placed on performing artists.

Now comes the iconic Andante. Its yearning melody, sung out by orchestra and piano in turn, floats virtually uninterrupted through the entire movement. But the music’s heart really is the harmony. In the first few phrases, note how it goes from sweetly serene to subtly dissonant and back again. The more that happens as the movement unfolds, the more poignant the music becomes. Mozart conveys intense emotion without ever raising his voice. High spirits return with the finale. Though the orchestra launches it, the keyboard soon takes the lead, allowing the soloist to revel in breezy virtuosity as the piano part runs rings around everything else. The music proves that Mozart, when he was crafting his warhorses, knew how to show off with style. Another dashing showpiece, Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1, brings Argentine pianist Ingrid Fliter back to the Houston Symphony in March. The Instruments: flute, 2 oboes, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani and strings —Steven Brown

Backstage PASS Meet

Bradley White, trombone

Working with young students: I used to teach private lessons at the high school and middle school level. There was a sixth grader, a beginner, and I was there from the very start of his playing. The boy was the most profoundly gifted trombonist I ever heard. I think he may have been a prodigy. This 11-year-old, who had played trombone for only six months, was picking up concepts college students sometimes miss. I was stunned by his talent. At the end of his first year on the instrument, his parents decided to take him out of band and put him in soccer. I pleaded with them not to pull him out, but my pleas fell on deaf ears. I sometimes wonder what prodigies are walking around out there, and no one knows they’re there. Looking forward to this season: I’m particularly excited about the all-Bruckner program with former Music Director Eschenbach. Bruckner’s Te Deum is one of the most hauntingly beautiful works I’ve ever heard. When I first heard it, I played it on an endless loop for a week. On another program, we are featuring Principal Bass Robin Kesselman playing the Koussevitzky Concerto. I’ve never heard a bass concerto performed with our orchestra, and I’m excited that I’ll finally get the chance. Plus, I’m very proud when the soloist is a Houston Symphony musician and the audience gets to hear how phenomenal he or she is. Outside of Jones Hall: I have twin daughters who are 10. You can imagine that I spend most of my time running them around to various activities, such as gymnastics, 52 | Houston Symphony

Irish dance and robotics club. I’m fortunate in that they still love doing lots of silly things with me. One daughter loves to build things, and we just finished building four small cat trees that will go to our local animal shelter. We delivered some custom cat trees six months ago, and the animal shelter asked if we could build more. My other daughter loves watching classic movies. She becomes giddy with excitement when I make popcorn, and we snuggle together to watch a movie. When we finished The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings series of movies, she started reading the books and loves them.

ERIC ARBITER

Bradley White has been a member of the Houston Symphony’s brass section since 2001, when he was appointed by Music Director Hans Graf as Associate Principal and Second Trombone. Bradley received a bachelor’s degree in music from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music in 1993 and a master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music in 1997. Along with his principal instructors David Waters and Per Brevig, he has also been heavily influenced by Allen Barnhill, Dave Kirk, Dave Finlayson, Ko-ichiro Yamamoto, Joe Alessi and John McCroskey. Bradley has performed with many ensembles, including the Ambient Brass, Houston Ballet, Houston Grand Opera, San Antonio Symphony, Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, and the Hawaii and Atlanta Symphony Orchestras. Bradley taught at the University of Houston in 2009–12. While he enjoyed teaching at the university level, he ultimately chose to spend more time with his family, including twin daughters.

In the family: There are a lot of amateur musicians on my mother’s side—mostly blue grass and gospel. My aunt’s entire family each has a guitar that’s as precious to them as a loved one. Their song books are as thick as dictionaries. There was even a musical traveling show in there somewhere, but I don’t have a lot of those details. My mother used to sing in her church and wrote a lot of her own songs. Inspiration: To willfully choose to become a professional musician, you almost have to feel you have no other choice. It becomes an obsession both with the pursuit of perfection of your instrument and with the music you love. The specific piece that caused me to make the decision was Mozart’s Requiem. I first heard it when I was 14. During the Confutatis movement, something clicked in my head, and I knew I wanted to play this piece till the end of my days.
