This is the first time for incoming Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada to be on the cover—and fittingly so for January since we are announcing on January 10 all of the wonderful music that he has planned for us in his first official season. Plus, he joins the orchestra again this month for two weekends of powerhouse concerts. See inside for more details. In this photo, Andrés is leading the orchestra during his appearance in October when Midori was the featured guest artist. Welcome back, Andrés!

Happy New Year! We are excited to welcome back Music Director Designate Andrés Orozco-Estrada this month. First will be performances of Mozart’s Symphony No. 41, Jupiter, on January 3, 4 and 5. Then, over the course of the next weekend, Andrés will conduct the orchestra in a double feature of our HD Odyssey hits—The Planets and The Earth—both featuring films of NASA imagery of our magnificent planet and solar system paired with symphonic scores by Gustav Holst, Richard Strauss and John Adams. Our HD Odyssey projects have become the most popular commissions in Houston Symphony history, attracting audiences around the world! Please turn to page 23 to see a list of all of our HD Odyssey donors who have made this possible. We are also excited to announce the 2014-15 Season this month. Stay tuned for more information on the announcement activity planned for Friday, January 10. You won’t want to miss the 2014-15 season announcement as it will feature Andrés revealing the music that he has programmed for his first official season as Music Director, as well as exciting announcements from Principal Pops Conductor Michael Krajewski! As part of our Centennial celebration, we are hosting several parties for Houston Symphony family members and alumni. Later in the spring, we will have the opportunity to celebrate the Centennial with current and alumni members of both the orchestra and chorus. It will certainly be a privilege to share memories with so many of the talented musicians who inspire and engage more than 300,000 Houstonians each and every season through their collective performances. In the middle of the month, concertmaster Frank Huang will be the featured soloist and leader in free concerts of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons at Houston Baptist University. In partnership with HBU and the Chester Pitts Foundation, Frank and his colleagues in the orchestra will perform two student concerts on the morning of January 17, followed by a public performance on the evening of January 18 in the Linda and Archie Dunham Theater on the campus of Houston Baptist University. Lastly, our school concerts continue in January with our Detectives Series for elementary students. This year, Associate Conductor Robert Franz will lead students through an hour-long program entitled “Opposites Attract” with the goal of developing active listening and critical thinking skills. As always, we thank you for your patronage and look forward to seeing you at Jones Hall. Enjoy the concert!

GETTING TO KNOW THE NEW MUSIC DIRECTOR DESIGNATE
Facebook fans quiz Andrés Orozco-Estrada On January 16, 2013, the Houston Symphony announced the appointment of its new Music Director Designate Andrés OrozcoEstrada. He officially begins his post as Music Director in September 2014, but he leads the orchestra four times during the current Centennial Season, including concerts this month. Symphony Facebook fans were eager to learn more about the new man in charge and sent him some questions. Read below for his answers. How do we engage young audiences to introduce a new generation of listeners to the glory of orchestral music? (Submitted by Ken Fitzgerald) The selection of repertoire and playing music to create a close connection with the audience are the most important. And, being a conductor of a younger generation, I draw upon this to build a bridge and a direct connection with them, trying to encourage a closer dialogue and looking for spontaneity and proximity. In every case, I want to give the audience the feeling that there is no border between them, the music and the conductor. What have been the most difficult struggles of your career? (Submitted by Steven Rodriguez) A conductor´s path is always a big challenge. Instead of focusing on the struggles, it’s more important to focus on the challenges and to work constantly to achieve big dreams and goals—step by step, one after another. These obstacles and challenges make you a better musician and person—and happier.

What composer, conductor or performer who is no longer living would you have most wanted to take to dinner? (Submitted by Ken Fitzgerald) Everyone! Well, there is so much to learn from each person, each great maestro and each great musician. What books have you read lately? (Submitted by Autumn R. Carpenter) 1) El lejano amor de los extraños by Tomás González 2) La civilización del espectáculo by Mario Vargas Llosa 3) Why Mahler?: How One Man and Ten Symphonies Changed Our World by Norman Lebrecht

THIS MONTH IN SYMPHONY HISTORY
Burt Bacharach
“I had done three or four different appearances with the Houston Symphony,” said Bacharach recently via an email interview. “I like the orchestra very, very much, and I like Jones Hall—it’s a wonderful place to play. My memories of the recording session were something that I dreamt about for two months afterward. We were racing against the clock to get two hours and 10 minutes of recording time in before time was up!” Another important CD, the Mozart Wind Concertos, was recorded with Music Director Christoph Eschenbach in 1993 to huge success. But in June 2001, Tropical Storm Allison hit, obliterating downtown Houston, and the Mozart Wind Concertos master tapes were one of the flood’s casualties. In the mid-2000s, the Symphony began searching for the masters, but discovered that another company had acquired the original label. The search continued into 2013, when the Symphony contacted the tape’s producer, Judith Sherman, who possessed the original tapes. They were shipped to New Jersey to be digitized and stored on a hard drive. DiscMakers began inserting tracks and designing cover art. “The Mozart Wind Concertos was my first recording with the Houston Symphony and with Maestro Eschenbach,” said Sherman. “We went on to make several other CDs, and I came to admire the Houston Symphony musicians tremendously. They were of very high caliber, certainly, but also their joy in their work, I think, comes through in the recordings. As we say in the business, ‘What a band!’” The three-disc set is on sale in the Symphony Store and via the box office for only $20. The set features Aralee Dorough (flute), Robert Atherholt (oboe), David Peck (clarinet), 14

This month, the Houston Symphony will embark on its next recording project, a commercial DVD for The Earth—An HD Odyssey. The project has extra significance because it will be the first recording for incoming Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada with the Houston Symphony. So, this month’s Centennial article will remember the rich collection of recordings created throughout the century, a discography that includes 53 titles dating back to 1950’s South Pacific/Kiss Me Kate conducted by Music Director Efrem Kurtz. While the Houston Symphony is known for its diverse recording collection, Burt Bacharach’s Woman might be a surprise addition. Known for his popular hit songs from the late 1950s through the 1980s, this well-known composer and entertainer joined the Houston Symphony in 1979 for a live recording session that also included the singer-songwriters Carly Simon and Libby Titus. The passionate, sometimes jazzy, eight-song album was conceived in one fourChina hour session at Jones Hall.

Benjamin Kamins (bassoon) and William VerMeulen (horn), of whom Dorough and VerMeulen are still in the orchestra. For the upcoming Earth recording, Senior Recording Engineer and KUHA 91.7 FM radio host Brad Sayles will set up similarly to the recording studio. “My main microphone array is a Decca tree threemicrophone system that uses tube mikes,” Sayles said. “We follow up with a compliment of spot mikes that fill out the sound. Everything is done on the floor with stands. We generally use up to 24 microphones to capture every instrument section; sometimes the mikes are only used for a few measures, but they are still very important.”
The Earth DVDs will be ready for purchase in Fall 2014. To learn more about the Houston Symphony’s fascinating history, pick up a copy of Houston Symphony: Celebrating a Century, by contacting the Patron Service Center at (713) 224-7575 or visiting the Symphony Store when you attend a concert.

any of Haydn’s symphonies carry nicknames, and one of the most fascinating is the Fire Symphony, No. 59 in A major. It was composed sometime between 1766 and 1768, during his early years in the service of the Esterházy family. Haydn scholar H.C. Robbins Landon has taken note of the words, “Fire Symphony,” in Haydn’s handwriting on one manuscript of the score and the notation on a different copy, “1774, written as entr’acte music for the play, The Conflagration.” The symphony is well named, at least with regards to its opening movement, for it is a high-energy piece powered by a steady pulsating rhythm that leaps up and down an octave span as it relentlessly propels the music forward. The movement has strong hints of the strict Baroque traditions from which Haydn’s early music evolved, though with a typical Haydnesque surprise, the fire gradually dies away in a soft ending. Haydn’s tonal adventures are the real novelty in the slow movement, since this theme moves rather abruptly back to A major, then vacillates between major and minor as the opening theme returns. The opening theme from the second movement is echoed in the sprightly Minuet, marking another experiment from Haydn’s vast symphonic laboratory. When it has run its course, the Minuet gives way to a fleet-footed finale, appropriately led by horn calls as the music races along to a zestful conclusion.

SYMPHONY NO. 41 IN C MAJOR, K.551 (JUPITER) Wolfgang Amadè Mozart (1756-1791) Recording Roger Norrington conducting the Salzburg Camerata (Orfeo d’Or) Instrumentation flute, two oboes, two bassoons, two horns, two trumpets, timpani and strings Unlike most of Mozart’s works, his most advanced, visionary essays in the symphonic medium were composed with no known performance in mind. Sadly, the spring and summer of 1788 were difficult times for the debt-ridden composer, whose popularity had waned among audiences. The times were also difficult for his potential patrons, because the financial resources of the Imperial court and nobility were depleted after a recently-concluded war with the Turks over control of Austria’s Eastern provinces. The title, Jupiter, was not attached by Mozart to his C major symphony, K.551, but was reportedly the idea of Johann Peter Salomon. He was the impresario who was to mastermind Joseph Haydn’s London concerts three years later, during the winter of 1791 when the sick, impoverished Mozart died. Salomon’s sobriquet is considered particularly appropriate to the triumphant quality of the symphony’s two outer movements. There is nothing unusual about the large design of the Jupiter Symphony’s individual movements or key relationships within and among them. The first, second and fourth movements are all cast in sonata form, while the third is a standard minuet and trio. As is typical in Mozart, the martial music of the first movement is fairly rich in the number and variety of its thematic ideas. The slow movement is one of Mozart’s most delicate creations. Its orchestration is tinted with dusky hues of muted violins, and its melody lines are constantly decorated with lacy figuration. It is at once poignant and deeply felt music. The minuet and trio are also notably gentle pieces, both built around yearning chromatic melodies. Whether consciously or not, the first four melody notes of the trio anticipate the shape of the four-note theme that dominates the finale. The finale is celebrated for Mozart’s feat of superimposing fugal 20

counterpoint upon a sonata movement. At various points in the movement, Mozart took themes he had presented and let them chase each other as in a fugue. In the climactic coda, he combined five different themes from the movement in various relationships to each other. This display of contrapuntal wizardry has held audiences, composers and musical scholars in awe for more than two centuries. The printed music for Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 was donated by Mr. and Mrs. Randall A. Barta. ©2014, Carl R. Cunningham
Biographies ANDRÉS OROZCO-ESTRADA, conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada, born in Colombia and trained in Vienna, is one of the most sought-after conductors of his generation. Beginning in the 2014-15 season, he will take up the positions of Music Director of the Houston Symphony and Chief Conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. Orozco-Estrada first came to international attention in 2004 when he took over a concert with the Tonkünstler Orchestra and was celebrated by the Viennese press as a “wonder from Vienna.” Engagements with many international orchestras followed, and since then he has developed a highly successful musical partnership with the Tonkünstler Orchestra, becoming its music director in 2009, an engagement that ends in 2015. From the 2009-10 through the 2012-13 seasons, Orozco-Estrada held the role of principal conductor at the Basque National Orchestra. Following his debut with the Vienna Philharmonic in fall 2010, Orozco-Estrada was hailed as “a brilliant stand-in” (Wiener Zeitung) for Esa-Pekka Salonen and celebrated as an “eminent talent” (Die Presse). In November 2012, he stepped in once again at short notice to conduct the Vienna Philharmonic in the Musikverein for Riccardo Muti and proved to be a “stand-in worth his weight in gold” (Kurier) and “an inspired master of communication” (Standard). Born in 1977 in Medellín, Andrés Orozco-Estrada began his musical studies on the violin and had his first conducting lessons at 15. In 1997, he moved to Vienna where he joined the conducting class of Uroš Lajovic, pupil of the legendary Hans Swarowsky, at the renowned Vienna Music Academy. He completed his degree, with distinction, by conducting the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Musikverein. Orozco-Estrada currently lives in Vienna.

His little chamber ensemble piece, composed for two violin soloists and two string orchestras, is one of several pieces he has assembled under the “Moz-Art” label, and it makes use of parodies similar to those that Mozart and Haydn employed during their own careers. Mozart’s most famous example of wrong-note parody occurs in his “Musical Joke.” Haydn is most frequently remembered in this genre for his Farewell Symphony, in which the orchestra members gradually blow out the candles on their music stands and disappear from the stage, leaving only two violinists to finish out the final movement of the work. Schnittke combines both tricks in his “Moz-Art à la Haydn” and serves up the additional device of having orchestra members engage in doodling and scattered playing of Mozart/Haydn-type musical excerpts at the very beginning of the piece, as though they were warming up onstage before a concert. According to directions in the musical score, this opening section is played in total darkness, though some performances show the audience talking and coming in to their seats in the auditorium while it is played.

In 2008, our now Conductor Laureate Hans Graf had an idea. Through his leadership and vision, the Houston Symphony teamed up with NASA and Executive Producer Duncan Copp, to bring forward a film featuring the latest, high-definition images of our solar system accompanied by a live performance of The Planets by Gustav Holst. This marked the beginning of what is now known as the HD Odyssey series, a film trilogy that combines breathtaking visuals of our universe with live performance. In 2012, the Houston Symphony premiered the second film in the series, The Earth—An HD Odyssey, which focuses on our world as seen from space. The music of John Adams and Richard Strauss provide a musical backdrop for the high-definition images of Earth, taken from NASA’s shuttle missions, the International Space Station and satellites orbiting the globe. It was seen again on July 28 as part of our 2012 Summer in the City series. More than 141,000 people on four continents have seen The Planets—An HD Odyssey and The Earth—An HD Odyssey since the world premiere. In January 2010, The Planets—An HD Odyssey was performed at Carnegie Hall on the Houston Symphony tour, and it also was performed on the United Kingdom tour in October 2010. Other world renowned orchestras have presented one or both of these projects, including The Cleveland Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, London Philharmonic and the Melbourne Symphony. The Houston Symphony has sold more than 5,000 DVD/Blu-ray discs of The Planets—An HD Odyssey. More than 600 educational discs have been distributed nationwide, including to Houston ISD, Clear Creek ISD and Katy ISD-area elementary, middle and high schools. The Houston Symphony offers special thanks to all of the individuals, foundations, corporations and donors whose initial investments in 2010 and 2012 made these projects possible. NOTes | The Planets and THE EARTH—An HD Odyssey | JANUARY 9, 11-12 Thus Spake Zarathustra marked a turning point in Richard Strauss’ decade-long involvement with the symphonic poem. His earlier tone poems—Don Juan, Death and Transfiguration and Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks—had been short works, for the most part dealing with human subject matter. When he turned to Nietzsche’s set of philosophical essays in the mid-1890s, he took on more abstract, abstruse material and initiated a series of much longer symphonic poems. He set about constructing a brilliant four-part symphonic poem, subdivided into eight sections based upon corresponding titles selected from 80-odd topics in Nietzsche’s wide-ranging discourse on human experience. The Prologue, a magnificent fanfare depicting the sunrise, imparts a cosmic quality to the piece. It has become famous in modern times as the theme music for Stanley Kubrick’s film, 2001: A Space Odyssey. Succeeding sections take up the subjects of primitive hinterland (“back world”) life, the rejection of established religion, yearning, joys and passions, and a somber graveyard dirge. In the fifth section, “Of Learning,” Strauss set forth a complicated fugue built on a theme constructed of all 12 notes in the chromatic scale. This section begins the third part of the symphonic poem, and as the fugue works its way into frenzy, it exhausts itself in a section titled, “The Convalescent.” The ensuing “Dance Song” is expressed by means of a Viennese waltz, and if that gesture indicated attainment of the Nietzschean goal that man should aspire to become superman, it earned Strauss considerable derision from the audience at the Frankfurt premiere of Thus Spake Zarathustra. The work ends with the “Night Wanderer’s Song,” highlighted by the midnight tolling of a deep orchestral chime. It is based on the same Nietzsche text (“Oh man! Give heed to what the deep midnight says”) that Mahler turned into a haunting orchestral song in the middle of his Third Symphony. Though Strauss’ purely orchestral setting is more extroverted, it leads to a conclusion filled with a quiet sense of wonderment. The printed music for R. Strauss’ Also sprach Zarathustra was donated by Musicians of the Houston Symphony.
THE PLANETS Gustav Holst (1874-1934) Recording Hans Graf conducting the Houston Symphony, with NASA footage of the planets in our solar system (Houston Symphony Society DVD in regular and Blu-ray format available at the Houston Symphony Store in Jones Hall lobby) Instrumentation four flutes (one doubling piccolo, one doubling piccolo and alto flute), three oboes (one doubling bass oboe), English horn, three clarinets, bass clarinet, three bassoons, contrabassoon, six horns, four trumpets, three trombones, tenor and bass tubas, timpani, percussion, two harps, celesta, organ, strings and off-stage women’s chorus In 1914-16, when Gustav Holst composed his famed orchestral suite, The Planets, there were only eight known planets in our solar system. Pluto’s existence was not discovered until the 1930s and questions have been raised in recent times whether it really is a planet. In planning the work, Holst focused his interest on our celestial companions, completely ignoring the existence of Earth in the planetary lineup. He also jumbled the natural order of the first four “inner planets” in their distance from the sun, in order to suit his own musical needs. And his interest was aroused not by any scientific astronomical observations upon the planets, but upon astrological associations suggested by the mythological names they had been given. Holst scholars have noted that the composer made a hobby of casting horoscopes and owned a book by Alan Leo on the subject. Leo’s book was Holst’s source in determining the descriptive character of each piece in the seven-movement suite. Holst completed work on the first movement, “Mars, The Bringer of War,” during the summer of 1914, just before World War I began. Over the next two years, he composed the remaining seven movements of The Planets during weekends and summer holiday periods when he was free from teaching duties at a girls’ school. Then, in 1917, he 26

NOTes | The Planets and THE EARTH—An HD Odyssey | JANUARY 9, 11-12 orchestrated the entire suite. Holst seems to focus on the notion of planets suspended in space with music that is rather static and unchanging within each musical portrait. “Mars, The Bringer of War” is generally loud and bellicose with heavy brass climaxes. By contrast, “Venus, the Bringer of Peace,” is a diaphanous slow movement, noted for its exotic tone colors and its subtle, elusive harmonies. “Mercury, the Winged Messenger” has a will-o’-the-wisp lightness, punctuated by sudden bursts of tone as the music flits from one orchestral group to another. “Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity” is full of robust humor and an easy sense of power. The proud theme at the center of the movement was later set as the patriotic hymn, “I Vow to Thee, My Country.” It is in the last three movements that Holst’s imagination results in the most colorful orchestral effects. “Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age” is represented by a solemn processional emerging from a faint, indefinite pulse of soft flutes and harps. After working its way to an inexorable climax, the movement bursts open with the brilliant sound of pealing bells. “Uranus, the Magician” begins with an ominous motto shouted out by the brass and timpani, then proceeds into a bold, riveting dance movement, interrupted twice more by the motto. And the foggy gases surrounding “Mystic Neptune” are softly represented by undulating woodwind chords, growling brasses, a filmy curtain of broken chords in the celesta, harps and strings, and finally, by an unseen women’s chorus, whose wordless vocalise gradually disappears into a silent ending of The Planets. This month, we present our first back-to-back presentation of The Planets and The Earth, so we asked Dr. Copp to reflect on his experiences in bringing these three films to life. tle raced to orbit in just seven and a half minutes, reaching 17,500 miles an hour; if that’s not the ultimate short ride in a fast machine, I don’t know what is. Also Sprach Zarathustra was different. David Fairhead, the film editor, and I knew the score had a number of movements written to evoke certain feelings and situations, but we didn’t want to be hemmed in by these. We’d listen to the music and feel our way: what pictures suited a particular phase. We do have thematics in the film, but we didn’t feel the need to be constrained to Strauss’ interpretation; that would have been a mistake I think.
Symphony sponsor Margaret Alkek Williams with Duncan Copp and a spaceman at the World Premiere of The Earth—An HD Odyssey on February 17, 2012.
Q. Tell us about your background. What drew you to study space and film-making? A. Thinking back to when I was a boy, I remember certain things intrigued me, things that evoked a sense of fascination. Looking at the Moon and stars was one. There was a powerful realization: I’m here, and they are way out there; they are untouchable, but they really exist; what must they be like? That was a magical frustration that drove a passion in me to understand more. I’m fortunate to have explored science further, first in academia and then through the medium of film. Making film is incredibly satisfying for me for two simple reasons: it’s an opportunity to learn more about subjects that fascinate me, and I get to share them with others. Q. It’s now been more than five years since you first began working on The Planets with the Houston Symphony. Looking back on the project, would you have done anything differently or has your interpretation of the film changed at all over time? A. Would I have done anything differently? No! The concept has been far more successful than I could have hoped. That’s not to say I see our films and think I could make a few tweaks, which we actually did shortly after the first performances. But working with the Houston Symphony is such fun. It’s one of those jobs where you have to pinch yourself. Q. With The Planets there was a clear musical score to follow for the selection and ordering of images. How did John Adams’ Short Ride in a Fast Machine and Richard Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra inform your selection of images and the structure of The Earth? A. John Adams’ music is wonderfully evocative. The title Short Ride in a Fast Machine said it all—it chose the images. The space shut32
www.houstonsymphony.org
Q. Looking back at The Earth was there a favorite moment or section of the film? A.That would have to be Short Ride in a Fast Machine. I knew of some ultra-slow motion high-quality engineering film that existed for shuttle launches. I managed to track it down and get permission to use it; it was a real buzz putting it to Adams’ score. That and Saturn from The Planets are perhaps my most enjoyable pieces to watch in terms of images. Q. This is the first time the orchestra will perform The Planets and The Earth together. How do you think this double header will enhance the concert experience for the audience? A. On its own, the music is wonderful to listen to. The images on their own are wonderful to look at; neither needs each other to evoke emotions. But put them together and I think you have something special, something where the sum is greater than the parts. Q. You recently partnered with the orchestra as executive producer of La Triste Historia, which was your first time to work with animation. How has this experience influenced your filmmaking? A. Conveying a narrative with a newly composed symphony was a complex and ambitious undertaking. My experience with animation was informative in terms of how to visualize the story. I think it worked well, and I’d like to explore using animation to accompany other symphonic pieces. I have a few ideas! Q. Since the Houston Symphony’s collaboration with you began, how have film-making techniques or technology changed? A. In a word, considerably! A simple example, everything I do now is digital—there’s no film or videotape. This has also changed the way I work; we don’t ship master tapes anymore, just digital files, which is incredible when you think about it. We’ve also become more sophisticated in terms of how we present the visuals. We are able to sync the images with the orchestra as they play, which means each conductor is free to conduct in a manner they see fit for the score. So, it makes life far easier for the maestro.

Career Advice for Aspiring Musicians While the face of America is changing, many 100-member orchestras still lack diversity, with only one or two Black or Latino musicians represented. However, nonprofits like The Sphinx Organization, founded in 1996 by Dr. Aaron P. Dworkin, are working to change that statistic by providing countless opportunities to young Black and Latino musicians in the classical music field. The Houston Symphony was proud to partner with Sphinx for several performances throughout the city last October. Audiences witnessed these fresh faces at the Lunada concert at Miller Outdoor Theatre on October 12 when The Sphinx Virtuosi played alongside the Houston Symphony. During this joint concert, the Catalyst Quartet, comprising The Sphinx Virtuosi’s principal players, was featured along with Sphinx’ conductor-less 24-member string orchestra that played Vivaldi, Bach, Perkinson, Piazzolla and Britten.
Next, the outreach program continued on October 13 as The Sphinx Virtuosi performed at The Church Without Walls in Cy-Fair and North Main Church of God in Christ in Independence Heights, where the players explained to the young audience what it takes to become a professional musician. Finally, the players visited Houston ISD’s Waltrip High School and Cesar E. Chávez High School and Pasadena ISD’s J. Frank Dobie High School on October 14 where music students perched on the edge of their seats while listening to Perkinson’s Sinfonietta No. 1 for Strings and Britten’s Simple Symphony for Strings, Opus 4. When asked what they planned to study in college, 90 percent of the students eagerly said, “Music!” Sphinx members advised students to work part-time to earn money for private lessons and better instruments, to practice, to pursue their dreams and to trust their teachers. To learn more about how the Houston Symphony is nurturing future generations through music and connecting our community, visit www.houstonsymphony.org/education-community.
The Houston Symphony acknowledges those individuals, corporations and foundations that support our education and community engagement activities. Each year, these activities impact the lives of more than 82,000 children and students and provide access to our world-class orchestra for nearly 111,000 Houstonians free of charge.

MUSICIAN SPONSORSHIP Amy is currently in her 31st season, after joining the orchestra in May 1982. Like Dede, she also has connections to Boston, having served as concertmaster for the Brandeis University Orchestra from 1975 to 1976. One of her favorite memories of her relationship with the Weils was running into them while on tour in Great Britain. “I didn’t know they were attending the concert, so it was wonderful to see them!” Another notable memory for Dede was attending Amy’s wedding reception in The Heights. Amy says, “Having sponsors means a great deal to me. By sponsoring a musician, I know the Weils are committed to the success of the Houston Symphony. Also, by investing in a one-on-one relationship with a musician, it helps bridge the gap between supporters and the stage.” For more information on sponsoring a musician, please contact Mark Folkes, Senior Director, Development, at (713) 337-8521 or mark.folkes@houstonsymphony.org. photo by eric arbiter

Houston Symphony Governing Director Dede Weil and husband Connie are longstanding supporters of the Houston Symphony. “I was raised with the Houston Symphony,” Dede fondly recalls. “I don’t ever remember not going!” Dede’s mother was a great influence, cultivating a love of classical music in the home and imbuing Dede with a sense of patronage towards the Houston Symphony. The experiences she recalls most dearly are Monday night concerts with Music Director Leopold Stokowski and a special reception her mother hosted featuring now famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma. When Dede completed formal education outside of Boston, she was nostalgic for the routine of attending performances and made a point to attend the local Boston Pops and symphony concerts. After relocating back to Houston and marrying Connie, the couple immediately began attending Houston Symphony performances. Connie and Dede enjoy supporting the Symphony as musician sponsors for Amy Teare, a second violinist in the orchestra.
Donors at the Conductor’s Circle, Silver Baton level and above are provided the opportunity to be recognized as sponsoring a Houston Symphony musician. BIOGRAPHY CONTINUED FROM PAGE 27 | The Planets and THE EARTH—An HD Odyssey | JANUARY 9, 11-12 Copp conceived and produced the much acclaimed feature documentary In the Shadow of the Moon, the intimate story of the Apollo astronauts. It received more than 15 awards. Moon Machines, a six-part series for Discovery’s Science Channel, recounts the trials of the engineers who built the machines that took the
ing public interest in science and technology. Previous recipients include Walter Cronkite and Gene Roddenberry. Copp currently sits on the Board of Advisors for The Golden Spike Company, a consortium of scientists, astronauts, engineers and politicians who share a common vision for future lunar exploration. BACKSTAGE PASS
Brian Del Signore, principal percussion | associate principal timpani Birthplace: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Education: BFA, Carnegie-Mellon University; Masters in Music, Temple University Joined the Houston Symphony: I joined the Houston Symphony on December 31, 1986, for the New Year’s Eve concert. I can’t wait for these concerts: I love new music, and composer John Adams is bringing his City Noir. That will be very exciting.
Finding the perfect instrument: There is a store in Philadelphia called Steve Weiss Music. It is the best place in the world to buy percussion. I’ve been finding my instruments there since I lived in Philadelphia in the early 1980s. Away from the hall: When I’m not at Jones Hall, I am usually with my family in one way or another. My wife, Leah, and I have three teenagers ages 15, 17 and 19. Quite a few people here at the Houston Symphony remember us with little children . . . but time flies.
Beginnings: I began piano lessons at age 6 and drums at 11. Earliest musical memory: One day I was sitting at our family piano, and the beginner’s book was turned to a piece titled “Bicycle Bill.” I said to my mother that I wanted to learn that piece. She came over to the piano, sat down and turned back to the first page of the book to give me my first piano lesson. I said, “I don’t want to play that, I want to play ‘Bicycle Bill.’” She said simply, “You’ll get there.” All in the family: My mother played the piano. My grandfather Del Signore, who came over from Italy in 1904, played the violin. I never knew him because he died in 1933. We still have his violin. Career inspiration: Music says things that no words can express. Best thing about being a musician: Creating music—writing or performing—is the best thing in the world to me. If I wasn’t a musician: I’d be a lost person. Favorite music to perform: I cannot choose a favorite piece of music. There are many. Composers who inspire me: I am very impressed with young composers. There is so much great music being written now, especially since we have unshackled ourselves with Modernism. The PostModern era allows absolute freedom to mix creative techniques and musical languages. Fantastic ideas for new music still abound. Current listening: City Noir Keeping the music-making fresh: As a percussionist, I have the ability to change the instrument I’m playing. Going from instrument to instrument during a practice session keeps me refreshed. 48
