welcome to the houston symphony

Dear Music Lovers,

Welcome to Summer Sounds at the Hobby Center. We have two great concerts in this program The Music of Queen and Star Wars: A New Hope in Concert. For The Music of Queen (July 7 & 8), we’re joined by vocalist MiG Ayesa and conductor Brent Havens along with a terrific line-up of rock musicians who will celebrate the British rock supergroup’s greatest hits. Conductor Nicholas Buc leads your Houston Symphony in John Williams’s legendary score for the original Star Wars (July 28 & 29), a thrilling experience with the full orchestra playing live to the film.

These two great programs aren’t all we’re doing in July. We’re also playing another great John Williams score live to film when we perform Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s StoneTM In Concert at the Hobby Center (July 14 & 15) and Smart Financial Centre (July 22) in Sugar Land. And we welcome back Cirque de la Symphonie (July 20) after their triumphant appearances with us last September. They’re joining us at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, another of our favorite places to perform during the summer.

Our summer renovations to Jones Hall continue, and we’re thrilled and grateful to be back at the Hobby Center this month. When you return to Jones Hall in the fall, you’ll enjoy all new seats, double the bathroom facilities downstairs, easier access to the bathrooms,

and acoustic improvements from a new stage shell surrounding our musicians. You can read more about these exciting changes on page 22.

And when we’re not on stages around Houston, we’re out in the community. We recently completed the pilot year of a new program aimed at getting violins into the hands of upper elementary students in Houston’s Fifth Ward. The DeLUXE K!ds In Harmony program, offered in partnership with the Fifth Ward Cultural District and American Festival of the Arts, gave these young people a year of intensive instruction from Houston Symphony Community-Embedded Musicians and orchestra members, and they finished things off with an energizing performance in May at the DeLUXE Theater for their friends, families, and fans. For more, please see page 13.

Thank you for being here, and enjoy the concert!

HARMONIOUS BEGINNINGS:

DeLUXE K!ds In Harmony’s Inaugural Year

The Houston Symphony's groundbreaking music education program, DeLUXE K!ds In Harmony recently wrapped up its first year with resounding success. Since its launch in September of last year, the free community-based program has brought quality music education to children in the Fifth Ward neighborhood, providing them with the unique opportunity to learn violin, perform, build their confidence, and connect with professional musicians from the Symphony.

Throughout the school year, 3rd–5th grade students in the Fifth Ward neighborhood were taught the fundamentals of violin and music reading by Houston Symphony Community-Embedded Musicians (CEMs) Rainel Joubert and David Connor with help from American Festival for the Arts (AFA) teaching artists. This intensive program provides students with 4.5 hours of instruction per week, an intensity level that is rare in community-based programs. “The impact that I have seen this year is truly immeasurable,” says Harrison Guy, Director of Arts and Culture for the Fifth Ward Cultural Arts District. “The students have grown musically, of course, but they’ve also grown socially, and they’ve grown to have a great sense of pride for where they come from and who they are.” Houston Symphony musicians also visited classes throughout the year to perform for students, share their experiences as professional musicians, and offer one-on-one instruction.

DeLUXE K!ds In Harmony is a collaborative partnership between the Symphony, AFA, and the Fifth Ward Cultural Arts District’s DeLUXE Theater. Houston Symphony CEMs create lesson plans and curriculum and for the students, AFA teaching artists assist the CEMs in instruction, and the Director of Arts and Culture for the Fifth Ward Cultural Arts District oversees parent and community engagement. “AFA’s mission tasks us with enriching the lives of all people through music, and one of the ways we reach that goal is by helping out with programs such as DeLUXE K!ds In Harmony,” says AFA Director for Education Dr. Mark Buller. “It’s really fulfilling to come

into this organizational relationship with the Houston Symphony and the DeLUXE Theater, learn from each other, and produce such wonderful programs.”

Students also have opportunities to demonstrate their talents in front of their friends, families, and community members in monthly performances at a variety of venues in the community, including the Jones Hall lobby before PNC Family Series concerts, the historic Fifth Ward DeLUXE Theater, and Bruce Elementary School in the Fifth Ward. Students learn and perform popular music—their favorite is currently an arrangement of “We Are Family” by the Sledge Sisters. “They love it because it’s a fun and contemporary song, but it also represents the community they’ve built. The students, families, and the teachers have created their own ‘violin family’ in this program,” says Pam Blaine, Houston Symphony’s Chief of Education and Community Engagement.

This summer, DeLUXE K!ds In Harmony is offering a summer camp program where new students can learn the basics of violin and returning students can brush up on their skills ahead of the school year and the second year of the program. DeLUXE K!ds In Harmony is a part of the Symphony’s Education and Community Engagement initiatives and relies on contributions from patrons to keep these education programs free of charge for students. If you’d like to contribute and support quality music education in Houston, scan the QR code below or visit houstonsymphony.org/donate. —Lauren

Program Insight

• Having been a student at Ealing Art College in London studying art and design, Queen’s very own Freddie Mercury designed the band’s iconic emblem.

• Freddie Mercury wasn’t the only studious band member. Drummer Roger Taylor has a degree in dentistry and briefly worked as a dental surgeon before pursuing his passion for music full-time. Brian May, Queen’s guitarist, completed his Ph.D. in astrophysics in 2007 and has since been involved in various space-related projects. Bassist John Deacon is a trained electrical engineer and would often rig equipment for the band. His most famous creation is the “Deacy Amp” used by Brian May.

• Early in Queen’s career, Freddie Mercury’s mic stand snapped in half during a performance and instead of replacing it, he continued the show with the broken mic. He discovered he liked the unusual arrangement, and it became a part of future performances.

• One of the most popular Queen songs, and perhaps the greatest rock song of all time, “Bohemian Rhapsody” took three weeks to record and features more than 180 vocal overdubs.

JONES HALL RENOVATION:

New Season, New Look, New Improvements

Jones Hall for the Performing Arts has been the beloved home for the Houston Symphony and a cherished part of the cultural landscape of Houston for nearly 60 years. The iconic building has served Houston well over the years, but to continue providing the world-class performances that many have come to expect, updates and improvements must be made to meet the needs of modern audiences and musicians. That’s why Jones Hall is undergoing a series of significant renovations over the summers of 2023 and 2024 with the goal of modernizing the space and improving accessibility while maintaining its historical significance.

Several updates are being made to the interior of the Hall this summer, including a reconfigured lobby with more open spaces, a sizeable increase to the number of bathroom facilities on the Hall’s courtyard level, and an expanded and enhanced green room. There are also improvements being made to the auditorium and stage—including new seating and enhanced acoustics— that will enhance the artistic experience for both musicians and patrons. “When we come back in September, patrons will really feel and see a pretty significant difference in the hall,” says Houston Symphony Executive Director/CEO and Margaret Alkek Williams Chair John Mangum. “The acoustical improvements and new seats are going to make a big difference in the way the orchestra sounds and the visceral impact of their sound on the patrons sitting in the audience. It’ll be a much more focused, intense, and immersive type of experience.”

By the time we open for the 2023–24 Season, the stage will feature a new orchestra shell, an addition that will give audiences a better, more natural, and improved audial experience. “The walls will be more parallel, and the stage area will be wider and shallower than the current stage area,” says Houston Symphony Chief Operating Officer Vicky Dominguez on the benefits of the new shell. “This will provide more feedback to the musicians onstage and keep sound from traveling behind and above the orchestra.” Additionally, most of the doors leading to the lobby on the orchestra level will be sealed off, creating just four entrances to the auditorium on that level. This

reduction in doors reduces the chances of light and sound distractions bleeding into the auditorium during a performance.

Concertgoers can also look forward to new seats and a new seating layout in the auditorium—both of which improve the overall concert experience. The new seating layout will focus on making the space more accessible and welcoming to all. With four vertical aisles—two side aisles and two center aisles—reaching your seat will be much easier. There will also be two ADA accessible cross aisles in the auditorium that will be fully accessible from the lobby on the Louisiana Street side. The new seats are built to reduce noise— they open and close smoothly and quietly and won’t squeak when audience members shift in their seats. And unlike the current chairs, which have a metal frame, the new ones are made with wood frames and seating material that assists with the acoustics.

Overall, the renovations to Jones Hall represent a significant investment in the future of the Houston Symphony and the cultural life of Houston as a whole. Through these updates to the facilities, we can ensure that the Symphony can continue to provide exceptional performances for generations to come. We hope to see you all in the new and improved Jones Hall very soon for the start of a new and exciting season at the Symphony! —Lauren

The Houston Symphony would like to thank the generous donors who have contributed more than $34,250,000 toward this $60 million renovation. 30 Houston Symphony

Houston Symphony Endowment

The Houston Symphony Endowment is organized and operated exclusively for the benefit of the Houston Symphony Society. Your contributions to the Endowment ensure the financial sustainability of your orchestra now and for generations to come.

A named endowed fund is a wonderful way to honor a loved one or to celebrate you and your family’s passion for the Houston Symphony. Named funds may be permanently established within the Houston Symphony Endowment with a minimum contribution of $250,000. Your fund can be designated for general purposes or specific interests.

One of the most impactful funds you can create is an Endowed Orchestra Chair. Opportunities to endow an Orchestral Chair begin at $1,000,000. Endowing a chair provides the Houston Symphony with funds to attract, retain, and support musicians of the highest caliber.

For more information about how you may support the Houston Symphony Endowment through a bequest or with a gift during your lifetime, please contact Hadia Mawlawi, Senior Associate, Endowment and Planned Giving, at hadia.mawlawi@houstonsymphony.org or 713.337.8532.
