Fivers’ Handbook 2012/2013
A Place to Call Home I’m sure many of you would have heard various stories about NTU’s hall life: late night suppers, crazy birthday celebrations, group mugging sessions… So, what does it really mean to live in Hall 5? Certainly, Hall 5 isn’t just a place for accommodation. It is a place for personal growth and independence. Apart from mugging, residents get to immerse themselves in the tradition of communal hall life and participate in activities organised by the Junior Common Room Committee and the special committees, ranging from Hall Productions to Inter-Hall Games to Overseas CIP, just to name a few. With the wide array of opportunities available, Hall 5 provides a fun living experience and possesses a strong hall identity not easily replicated by others.
Having said all, the best is yet to come. The friends that we meet and the common experiences we share are what cause hall life to be special and fulfilling. The friendships formed, the bonds forged and the memories created become treasures in our hearts. Here in Hall 5, a place you would soon call home, a place where you can live your life to the fullest!

The Talented, The Enthusiastic — The Special Committees Hall 5 is certainly a place where everyone can fit in well. We have five special committees, which may well suit the various interests of individuals of different personalities & pursuits. Dinner and Dance—As one of the most anticipated event, the team is challenged with the crucial task of grooming our next Hall King and Queen and executing an unforgettable night for FiVers. HAVOC— Made up of outgoing and witty individuals, they are on the mission to bring fun for the freshies and build friendships of a lifetime.
Quintsical Productions— Embarking into their 20th anniversary, our budding artistes and aspiring performers, together with the crew looks set to bring the stage down with their passion and enthusiasm for the arts. 21 Young Hearts(TYH)—Compassion is what they are. TYH believes in giving back to the society through engagements in various local and overseas CIPs. Everyone Counts! The annual Hall Olympiad is one of the major highlights in NTU’s hall life, which guarantees to be an unforgettable experience. It is a largescale event involving all 16 halls to compete in various items: 20 sports, 10 recreational games, cheerleading and dance, and vie to be crowned as the champions. The Hall 5 spirit never shines brighter as FiVers play and cheer their hearts out for one another. The bonds forged through the countless practices and games are indeed invaluable. Being part of the FiVer family certainly makes the entire Hall Olympiad experience a more action-packed and memorable one.

Simple Pleasures Why do residents and even graduated seniors choose to return to Hall 5 every year? Yes, there are indeed halls with better facilities, but what makes up the greatest part of an awesome hall life is – people. Having friends by your side on a windy night at your block’s sofa; shouting across the block to see familiar faces pop up some times, even the hall cats pop by to join in the fun; and chatting merrily in a group as the hungry night owls make their way to supper at Ah Fang, a 24 hour coffee shop within walking distance from hall. It’s especially during times of stress over school work that having such fun-to-be-with
friends around you helps lighten your mood, ensuring you start everyday with a bounce and end every night with a smile on your face. Simple pleasures such as the frequent suppers, occasional birthday celebrations, sports and games… Simple pleasures – that’s the simple answer.
Mug Mug Mug Freaking out about the dreadful exams even before your first lesson in NTU? No worries, help is available everywhere. Seniors from various courses in hall are always willing to lend a helpful hand: providing advice, notes, and old textbooks. But, do act fast! There are also facilities like the reading and computer room located above the canteen, which provide a conducive environment for revision. During exam periods, the conference room is converted to a study room where you and your comrades can conquer the war together. Nonetheless, while you mug your life away, don’t forget to take FIVE, and relish a hot mug of coffee. :)
