yourletters UBER DRIVERS REPLACED BY GOLDFISH This is not a headline from the Sun or, in fact, any newspaper but in a post truth world, who cares. Amazingly, there is a little truth behind it. Scientists from Ben Gurion University have developed a robotic vehicle which goldfish can manoeuvre by swimming close to the side of a tank fitted to its roof. The goldfish learn that they can reach a food source by altering the course of the vehicle to bring the vehicle into its vicinity. This is serious research, not a joke, and the experiment has been peer reviewed in Behavioural Brain Research. If you have nothing better to do with your time, unlikely in this post Covid world, the experiment can be viewed on YouTube. The reality of goldfish navigating our streets picking up Uber hailers is probably a long way off. It does raise the question of how a complex skill like driving and managing a car is being slowly eroded. My theory that road safety would be vastly improved if all driving tests had to be carried out in pre 1945 cars is for another day. It is sufficient for the moment to reflect on what modern cars do for us that generations of drivers have done for themselves. My fairly middle of the road BMW takes it upon itself to switch on the seat heaters if it thinks I might be cold. It asks me politely

if I’m tired and would like a rest. Worryingly, it no longer brings up suggested hotels, restaurants or scenic picnic areas and now displays a list of local care homes. (A mystery: Ed) If I ask it to ring my wife, it actually brings up a list of people who it thinks might be my wife. Now that cars feel free to suggest that we are bigamists, anything is possible. All of that is peripheral when compared with technology that denies us the right to wander vaguely from lane to lane as we admire the scenery at seventy miles an hour. Do we need to be dictated to by the car yanking the steering wheel away from us? Why does my car begin with a gentle reminder to fasten my seat belt and rapidly reduce itself to a state of hysteria if I ignore it? Do we need technology to switch the lights and windscreen wipers on and off depending on the weather and time of day when we are supposed to be monitoring what is happening outside ourselves? The list could go on. Goldfish, halibut and grey mullet may be the future, but may it not be time for manufacturers to abandon the race to deprive us of the simple pleasures of exercising our own skill and preferences as we drive? That would allow BMW designers time to spend making their cars beautiful again, but that is another topic for another day. (Don’t bank on it, David: Ed) David Mason www.bmwcarclubgb.uk
