ARTIST STATEMENT
Robert Hamric has been working in mixed media sculpture, steel cubism sculpture and large landscape paintings since the early 1980’s. Exploring whimsy, modernism and expressionism, his art has various aspects to it. The work ranges from powdercoated steel cubes to a small guitar wrapped in colored wire with fish, horns and horseshoes for the Austin Gibson Guitar project. Hamric’s work is southwestern in imagery, using familiar objects in a new context, creating for the viewer the freedom to see a new form and place for what is ordinary.
Presently, Hamric’s work is in oil on canvas, creating large scale landscapes of the Chinati Mountains. With the magnificent plant and animal life of the Chihuahuan Desert, there is much beauty to work with as seen in the mountain range horizons at sunset or daybreak along the Rio Grande-Mexico border. Where the land is harsh and barren, but full of light, reflections and shadows, the many varieties of cacti and their unique vibrant colors offer a greatness for any artist to want to paint. Hamric does so with the jagged mountain horizons painted expressionistically using bright colors and free swirling brushstrokes. This work makes a tremendous impact in any space, transforming it to a vista where mountains, skies, grasses, animals and flowers entirely overwhelm you.
Artwork of the Corpus Christi, Texas-born artist has been shown at the South Texas Art Museum and Mexic-Arte Museum in Austin. Hamric has a BFA in Fine Arts from The University of Texas at Austin and has studied under well-known contemporary artists William Lester, Charles Umlauf, Robert Levers and Joseph Cain.
