Spatial Experience Designer Hannah Kwon hello@howhannah.com 714.788.2833

Dear Bjarke Ingels, Design solves everyday problems and shapes lifestyles. As a designer, my role is to observe and to provide needs catered towards a specific community. I have lived in several different countries growing up and as I continue to travel the world, I have developed different ways of observing the lifestyles of local communities across the globe. Through connection with the locals, my attitude towards design originates from an understanding of their culture and social needs. This method of observation at a local level has carried throughout the bulk of my work, shaping the way I see the world and, in turn, design for it. The more I visit different parts of the world, the more I become mindful of differences across communities and my desire to introduce alternative solutions as the locale grows. As a storyteller, I utilize all disciplines of design to communicate a unique narrative while discovering the possibilities presented by new available technologies. As a spatial experience designer, I have to be aware of all the aspects of a design within a specific context, including the program, navigation, and the mood of the space. This is achieved through envisioning the space holistically; individual elements must be curated to enhance the experience I’m trying to deliver. The ability to design across multiple disciplines allows me to carry out my desire to execute alternative solutions by exploring the unfound and uncharted. With an end goal in mind, I believe one does themselves a disservice if they do not explore all available options and opportunities presented. It is only in this way that one can truly find the honest breadth and scope of possibilities available to influence the future. Architecture design that tells a story and solves problems kindles my passion for design. After graduating, I would like to be a part of an architecture design firm that defies convention while incorporating sustainable development principles and bold sociological concepts. What you are surrounded by affects who you become and the work that you produce. I hope to move to New York to indulge in its creativity and take part in the vibrancy of the city, as well as allow it to fuel my creativity and passion for my work. Traveling around the world, I am attracted to the candidness of the community. I feel I fit in with New York because it is a place where people from different backgrounds and stories congregate, and they accept and embrace their differences with a candor that is unmatched elsewhere in the States. Sincerely,

Hannah Kwon

Traveling Traveling allows me to shake up my idea of “normal” by observing people’s lifestyles and living in a new environment. I enjoy the process of growing in character as I examine myself within new surroundings and seeing the results of my character change.

20

personal inspiration

Self Care Nothing really matters. The only three things that fill my heart are: relationships with friends and family, self growth, and my walk with God. I am constantly checking if I am attaining these three areas in my life. I constantly invest in my community, seek opportunities to grow my character and capture every emotional state in journaling, and connect with God.

22

personal inspiration

Music I turn to playing guitar or piano in every season of my life to capture my emotion and sing to God. I like to sing spontaneously with words created from my heart. It is my way of connecting to Him.

24

personal inspiration

Nature Immersed in nature, I am undone in the beauty of the planet we live in. Especially in the midst of hearing the sounds and watching the waves crash in front of me, I arouse my healthy fear of the Creator.

26

personal inspiration

Minimalism I realized I’m always seeking new things to give me joy, but new becomes old so quickly that I’ve found myself constantly acquiring new things. Therefore, I have decided to declutter everything in my life that is not valuable. The idea of decluttering has fascinated me. As I apply minimalism to my lifestyle, I find myself with less literal and emotional baggage. What’s left are those that I find truly important and memorable.

Bjarke Ingels Group BIG is a Copenhagen, New York, London and Barcelona based group of architects, designers, urbanists, landscape professionals, interior and product designers, researchers and inventors. The office is currently involved in a large number of projects throughout Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East. BIG’s architecture emerges out of a careful analysis of how contemporary life constantly evolves and changes. Not least due to the influence from multicultural exchange, global economical flows and communication technologies that all together require new ways of architectural and urban organization. BIG believes that in order to deal with today’s challenges, architecture can profitably move into a field that has been largely unexplored. A pragmatic utopian architecture that steers clear of the petrifying pragmatism of boring boxes and the naïve utopian ideas of digital formalism. Like a form of programmatic alchemy we create architecture by mixing conventional ingredients such as living, leisure, working, parking and shopping. By hitting the fertile overlap between pragmatic and utopia, we architects once again find the freedom to change the surface of our planet, to better fit contemporary life forms.

AMO often works in parallel with OMA’s clients to fertilize architecture with intelligence from this array of disciplines. This is the case with Prada: AMO’s research into identity, in-store technology, and new possibilities of content-production in fashion helped generate OMA’s architectural designs for new Prada epicenter stores in New York and Los Angeles. In 2004, AMO was commissioned by the European Union to study its visual communication, and designed a coloured “barcode” flag – combining the flags of all member states – that was used during the Austrian presidency of the EU.

Coffee + Tea House Design is problem solving. It is to accommodate change for the better in the future. As an spatial experience designer, I am requred to have reasonings and stories behind all my design thinking and design proposals which sometimes limits me from producing designs that I think is appropriate for that it looks. I would like to have a coffee and tea house in the future to deliever my creativity in the space in everyway from making my own cups and building furniture, to crafting coffee and teas to serve, and everything in the store will available for sale.

After years of discovering my design aesthetic through school and work in the creative field, I’ve identified my visual identity as practical, simple, and straight to the point. The boldness of all caps captures the unapologetic confidence disclosed in the clear concepts that drive my design. Slightly stretched letters and wide kerning capture the expanse of my wildest imaginations, while the extended boarders of the H’s on both ends capture how I deliver my concepts in concrete reality amid adhering to the strict limitations and constraints of the design process that can often drive the design itself. These guidelines allow me to not only ground myself, but to bookend my design within a greater set of parameters.
