HOW TO SOLVE COMMON ODOR PROBLEMS One of the most often-asked question we get is, “How do I solve my odor problem? We hear this often, and the good news is, we do have a multitude of solutions available. The first question we ask is, what exactly is the odor issue you’re trying to fix? Is it the cat itself, the litter box area? Or maybe it’s a couch, bed, or leather sofa that got marked? Is your cat indoor or outdoor, or both? Is this a multi-pet home? The reason we have to ask all of these questions in turn is that solving an odor problem depends on the underlying beginning of the problem is.
CAT ODOR Does your pet stink ? If so, the first thing you may want to consider is its diet. Just like humans, a cat’s aroma is affected by what it eats. By their nature, they are wired to be high carnivorous. Feeding them too many carbohydrates or low quality proteins may not agree with their system and create a stink. And if you’re feeding your cat table scraps, you might want to reconsider. That alone may be the cause of the issue, as cats and humans have very different diets. If your kitty is eating healthy, but still has a stink about him or her, you might need to take a trip to the vet. It’s possible that your cat may have a health related issue such as diabetes, which can affect the skin and fur of our feline friends. It’s possible too, that there is something happening that is causing it to have bad breath, which might be diet or health related, that in turn causes an unwanted odor. When in doubt, your best bet is to talk with your vet, who will know what is the best approach to keep your pet healthy, and odor-free.
LITTER BOX Now, if it’s the litter box area that is causing the offending odor, that requires a different strategy to have good success and results. First, you need to realize that this is your cat’s bathroom. Would you want to use a bathroom that is less than clean, or in a dark area, or is otherwise putting you in an uncomfortable position? Of course not – and neither does your cat! It might sound like a lot of extra work, but you should get in the habit of scooping out the litter box every single day, and ensuring that there is enough litter in the box. You also want to put the litter box in a part of the home that is well lit, isn’t subject to noise (from things like the dishwasher or garbage disposal), and affords them some privacy. If you don’t have these basics in place, then the cat may not use the box properly, go outside the area, or let you know that it’s not pleased with the set up by urinating where they shouldn’t be! Your family companion isn’t trying to spite you when he uses somewhere else in your home other than the litter box, it’s just that they can’t talk to you! The box itself should be large enough that your cat can get in and out of it without too much effort. You don’t want the walls to be too high – if so, they’ll have problems walking in to it. It should be not too short, nor too long. Put yourself in your pet’s shoes (or paws, as it were) and think if you’d be comfortable with the litter box setup you have in place. If not, you need to make adjustments so that your buddy is comfortable, and has no reason to do its business anywhere else in the home.
The boxes themselves should be washed out thoroughly at least once a month. And when you wash them out, be sure that you don’t use anything that has ammonia in it.Cats have a very sensitive sense of smell, and you don’t want to use anything that might make them dislike the box you’re using. Just plain old soap and hot water should do the trick. After washing, let it air dry before putting clean litter in.
FURNITURE AND CLOTHING ODORS If your cat is has gone outside the litter box and onto a piece of furniture like your bed, or a leather couch, there might be a few reasons this is occurring. As discussed above, and ruling out any health or cleanliness issues, your cat might be doing this for a few different reasons. If it’s a male, they do tend to want to “mark” their territory, and do this mostly through urination. An animal with a strong personality will want to definitely say “Hey! This is MY territory, and I am letting you know by the smell”! Of course, this is not what we want any cat to be doing, but it’s difficult to stop what comes natural. Before taking a course of action, it’s well worth mentioning that one thing you should never do is punish them for such behavior. Some people say that you should give a spanking, rub their nose in a mess, or use a water pistol on them. Not only is this mean to do, but it’s not effective. Your cat is communicating with you in the only way it knows how, so keep that in mind. First, what you’ll want to do is get rid of any smell, urine or other matter that is left behind. You’ll want to wash any clothing or sheets in very hot water with lots of soap. Remember that a cat has a much better sense of smell than a human, so getting out every little bit of the smell is necessary. It might require that you wash any affected item several times. If this is not possible, you may need to use a product that will get to the root of the issue and remove all odors and stains. The important thing here is that you want to clean up the affected area or item so that any marking is gone. Cats tend to mark the same area of item repeatedly, so if you can clean it up all the way, it will deter them from marking there again. This is also a good method to use when you have multiple cats in the house, and they are “fighting” for territory. Keeping any areas that have been marked by urine cleaned up, you’ll discourage them from battling over territory. If there’s going to be a turf war in your home, you’ll want to do all you can to confine it to the litter box area. Last area to consider is, does your cat live indoors only, or outdoors as well? It’s possible that the odor you’re smelling isn’t your cat! It might be the neighborhood skunk or possum that your cat has gotten into a tussle with, and the other animal’s odor is what they’re bringing back into the house. If possible, you might want to have your feline friend live indoors only for a week or two, so that you can test
this theory. If your cat is bringing in odors from outdoors or those caused by other animals, you might need to supervise their time outdoors, or limit it to daylight only hours.
CONTROLLING ODOR IN APARTMENTS One of the biggest challenges a pet owner faces when living in an apartment is controlling pet odor , especially that made by our feline friends. The challenge is that living in a smaller space doesn’t afford your cat the option to roam the house, or go outdoors at will. If you live in an apartment, it’s a sure bet that you have an indoor-only cat. In addition to wanting to control odors for yourself, there’s probably a clause in your rental contract where you’ll face steep fines if there’s a problem your pet leaves behind when you move out due to urine and/or other odors. So what’s an apartment dwelling cat owner to do? Because apartments are smaller than homes, any issue with odor control will reveal itself sooner rather than later. As we’ve discussed in previous articles, the number one thing you can do to control the smell is to keep the litter box clean. This is assuming that your cat is healthy, and also has a good diet. With that in mind, there are two things you can do to help the situation. Number one, you need to choose a great litter that will work it’s magic for you when you’re not around to scoop up any messes immediately. Traditionally, clay was used as the go-to solution for litter, and it’s still available, but probably won’t be the best solution for your problem. Although it might seem like an expensive investment, consider purchasing an automatic kitty litter box. If you’ve never heard of these, they are typically a “set it and forget it” solution to handling your cat’s personal business. The way they work is that unlike a traditional litter box, these have a cleaning mechanism built in so that the box is effectively cleaned each time it’s used. The boxes have a sensor to know when the cat is in the box (so they don’t activate while it’s being used) and a wait time after there is no motion before the cleaning action occurs. If you have the budget, there are some specific brands what we like – these are what you might call “high end” litter boxes. The great thing about these is that they have a specific type of litter that will help to control any odors, and some are fully automated. For example, the litter box made by PetSafe called “Scoop Free Litterbox” which is available on Amazon by clicking this link – ScoopFree does a great job at being handsfree. To make matters as simple as possible, all you have to do is load up the machine with a tray that contains a special litter, and the machine does the rest. If you have a light-duty cat, it’s possible that ScoopFree with its special Blue Crystals litter could run for weeks unattended. There are a lot of positive reviews about the product, and for good reason; it works as advertised!
Tidy Cats also has an automated litter box system, which we have heard works pretty well. You probably know them for their litter, but they make a litter box system as well. Similar to other products, the idea is that you’ll put a well-performing litter in the box, and let the machinery do the rest. One thing we’ve noticed about the Tidy Cats litter in particular is that it’s almost 100% dust free. This is really important, because as your cat scratches around after doing its business, and wanting to bury the waste, it’s inevitable that some dust would normally get kicked up. There is where Tidy Cat really shines, because there is almost never any dust kicked up, which is important as it can carry odors through the apartment that you’re trying to keep clean. Their system is available from a number of retailers, but for conveniences’ sake, we’ve included a link to Chewy here: https://www.chewy.com/tidy-cats-breeze-cat-litter-box/dp/47104
TESTIMONIALS Amazing! We bought it because our kitty litter was stinking up our whole master bathroom and bedroom. We buy a natural kitty litter just in case our toddler eats it. Sad, I know. We use two sprays in our litter box each morning and it has eliminated the smell completely. Can't speak to stains since our kitty hasn't had accidents yet, but it definitely works as an odor eliminator. Rachel - Verified Amazon Purchaser
