Facelift surgery also known as rhytidectomy addresses these aesthetic issues and slows down the signs of aging, helping to restore a more youthful appearance. Some facelift procedures also include tightening of the underlying tissues. To improve results, it is often combined with procedures to enhance the appearance of the forehead, cheeks, brows and eyes. For a traditional facelift, an incision is made in front of the ear extending up into the hair or hairline. The skin is raised and the underlying facial musculature is elevated to a more anatomically pleasing position. Excess skin is removed and the incisions are concealed around the ear.

The time taken to perform the procedure will depend on the type of lift. While minifacelifts can be done in or under two hours, standard facelifts usually take three to four hours; treatment that combines other procedures such as eyelid or brow surgery may take up to six. Some slight bruising and swelling is typical and may last for few days after the surgery. During the recovery stage, a bandage might be placed around the face to minimize swelling and bruising.
