Poll Says Half of Seoul Teenage Boys Favor Plastic Surgery According to a report published by the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS), a 2011 survey by the Seoul city government showed that 31.5 percent of residents 15 or older were willing to undergo surgery to improve their looks. Now a recent poll says that about half of teenage boys in Seoul say that they would have plastic surgery to enhance their appearance. The survey by the Seoul Metropolitan Government revealed that only 16.9 percent of male adolescents between 15 and 19 answered "no" to plastic surgery and 49.4 percent were in favor of it. This is a sharp turnaround from 2007 when 32 percent favored aesthetic surgery and 38% rejected it. The report says that about 33 percent of teens consider nip and tuck a possibility in a positive light. Most believe that they are judged based on their looks. In 2013, nearly 8 percent of men age 20 to 24 felt people were being discriminated against based on looks, and the recent poll shows that many teenagers feel that way too. The plastic surgery trend is catching on among teenagers in other countries too. According to an American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) report, teenagers accounted for

63,623 procedures in 2013 - about 4% of the total procedures that year. Rhinoplasty tops the list with more than 30000 procedures. ASPS has put forward guidelines for teens considering plastic surgery procedures to help them make the right decision: • The teenager should initiate the request and have realistic goals and expectations. • The plastic surgeon chosen must be experienced and board-certified in the specialty recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties, including the American Board of Plastic Surgery. • The treatment has to be done in an accredited surgical facility with the options to handle rare complications. • The procedure must be done under a policy of comprehensive, informed consent. The details of the treatment need to be made clear including the benefits and risks and agreed to by the candidate and their guardian. Otoplasty, rhinoplasty, breast augmentation, liposuction, and correction of gynecomastia are among the popular cosmetic procedures for teens. Most importantly, teenagers considering cosmetic treatments should be physically and emotionally mature.
